LIGHTYARD STORIES: Visionen urbaner Lebensräume Das SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival verwandelt Fassaden in Leinwände, Plätze in Bühnen und vertraute Wege in Erlebnisräume. Im Weinbrenner-Jahr 2026, dem 200. Todesjahr des Karlsruher Architekten und Stadtbaumeisters Friedrich Weinbrenner, macht Licht sichtbar, was unsere Städte prägt – nicht nur ihre Gebäude, sondern auch die Verbindungen zwischen ihnen. So eröffnet es neue Perspektiven auf den urbanen Raum und lädt dazu ein, ihn gemeinsam zu entdecken. „Architektur ist nicht nur die Konstruktion von Gebäuden, sondern auch der Räume dazwischen: der Straßen, Parks, Plätze und Lichthöfe. Dies sind die Be- gegnungsorte, wo wir mit Bekannten und Unbekann ten in Kontakt kommen und sich verschiedene Kulturen und Lebensweisen vermischen. Das ist die Essenz einer blühenden Stadt. The SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival transforms facades into screens, squares into stages, and familiar paths into spaces for new experiences. During the Weinbrenner Year 2026—marking the 200th anniver sary of the death of Karlsruhe architect and city planner Friedrich Weinbrenner—light reveals what shapes our cities: not only its buildings, but also the connections between them. In this way, it opens up new perspectives on urban space and invites us to discover it together. “Architecture is not just the construction of buildings, but also of the spaces in between: the streets, parks, squares, and courtyards. These are the meeting places where we come into contact with acquaintances and strangers alike, and where d ifferent cultures and ways of life intermingle. That is the essence of a thriving city. In this spirit, we gather in front of the palace and the visions of these artists to celebrate the joy of urban life.”
The projections on the castle’s facade start every day at dusk and end at around 11.15 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, and at around 11.45 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Every evening, various works are presented one after another in a different order. The new shows can be seen every night. They are accompanied by a selection of works from the past years. Once a week, on Maxin10sity Wednesday, several of the most impressive shows by the Hungarian artist collective will be presented.

PREMIEREN 2026: Henry Hu MIRΔGE MIRΔGE ist eine hypnotische Sinnesreise, die Augen und Verstand herausfordert. Statischem Stein wird Leben eingehaucht, Architektur löst sich auf und entfaltet sich in faszinierenden geometrischen Formen, um eine neue Dimension zu offenbaren. Der chinesi sche Künstler und Designer lebt in Singapur. In seinen Arbeiten setzt er sich mit Natur, Transformationen und Metamorphosen auseinander. MIRΔGE is a hypnotic sensory journey that challenges the eyes and the mind. Static stone is brought to life; architecture dissolves and unfolds into fascinating geometric forms, revealing a new dimension. The Chinese artist and designer lives in Singapore. In his work, he explores nature, transformations, and metamorphoses.
Studio Moebius X Three Oscillators RE:STRUCT
Städte wandeln sich und selbst die beständigsten Bauwerke nehmen irgendwann eine neue Gestalt an. RE:STRUCT spiegelt durch dynamische Bewegungen, anorganische Texturen und leuchtende Farben diesen urbanen Kreislauf wider. Das Sounddesign untermalt diese Verwandlung mit vor Ort aufgenommenen sowie synthetischen Klängen. Das kollaborative Werk des Medienkünstlers Nikunj Patel und des Musikproduzenten Brij Dalvi aus Mumbai dekonstruiert Architektur und befasst sich mit der Fähigkeit einer Stadt, sich flexibel anzupassen und neu aufzubauen.
Cities are constantly changing, and even the most enduring structures eventually take on a new form. Through dynamic movements, inorganic textures, and vibrant colors, RE:STRUCT reflects this urban cycle. The sound design accompanies this transformation with sounds recorded on location as well as synthetic sounds. This collaborative work by media artist Nikunj Patel and music producer Brij Dalvi from Mumbai deconstructs architecture and explores a city’s ability to adapt flexibly and rebuild itself.

Wie internationale kreative Zusammenarbeit aussehen kann, zeigt das Ergebnis der zweiten SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Summer School im ZKM | Karlsruhe, das unter der Leitung des interdisziplinären Kreativstudios ruestungsschmie.de im August 2026 entsteht. 15 internationale Kreative treffen sich in der UNESCO City of Media Arts und entwickeln eine Projektion zur Musik von Sonic Art.
The outcome of the second SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Summer School at the ZKM | Karlsruhe, which will take place in August 2026 under the direction of the interdisciplinary creative studio ruestungs schmie.de demonstrates what international creative collaboration can look like. Fifteen international creatives will come together in the UNESCO City of Media Arts to develop a projection set to music by Sonic Art. → Premiere am 5. September

Im Rahmen des Malwettbewerbs von dm-drogerie markt wurden aus einer Vielzahl von Einreichungen zwölf beeindruckende Kunst werke von Kindern im Alter von 3 bis 12 Jahren ausgelost, die ihre eigenen Visionen eines lebenswerten Stadtraums der Zukunft eingereicht haben. Die Beiträge zeigen, wie sich die Kinder ein schönes und harmonisches Zusammenleben in der Stadt vorstellen.
Metanoia Creatives METABOLISM

Der Metabolismus ist eine einflussreiche japanische ArchitekturBewegung aus den späten 1950er Jahren, die Gebäude und Städte nicht als starre Monumente, sondern als lebende Organismen betrachtet. METABOLISM ersetzt die Architektur des Schlosses durch dynamische, techno-organische Strukturen und verwandelt sie in einen lebenden Organismus. Das interdisziplinäre Team Metanoia besteht aus Jakub Nosek und Julie Tampierová aus der Tschechischen Republik.

Metabolism is an influential Japanese architectural movement from the late 1950s that views buildings and cities not as rigid monuments, but as living organisms. METABOLISM replaces the architec ture of the palace with dynamic, techno-organic structures and transforms it into a living organism. The interdisciplinary Metanoia team consists of Jakub Nosek and Julie Tampierová from the Czech Republic.

As part of the dm-drogerie markt drawing competition, twelve impressive artworks by children aged between three and twelve were selected randomly from a large number of entries; these children had submitted their own visions for a liveable urban space of the future. The entries show how the children imagine beautiful and harmonious coexistence in the city.

Moritz Schneider OceanDiverCity Die Show entstand zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum des größten lebenden Korallenriffs Deutschlands im Staatlichen Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe. Inspiriert durch die Arbeit von WeDoOcean e. V. erzählt der Karlsruher Animationskünstler Moritz Schneider die Geschichte vom Wiederaufbau beschädigter Korallenriffe aus der Sicht eines Tauchers.

The show was created to mark the 10th anniversary of Germany’s largest living coral reef at the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe. Inspired by the work of WeDoOcean e. V., Karlsruhe-based animation artist Moritz Schneider tells the story of the restoration of damaged coral reefs from a diver’s perspective.

Die Berufsfeuerwehr Karlsruhe feiert 2026 ihr 100-jähriges Be stehen und gleichsam Einsatz, Zusammenhalt und Leidenschaft. Die sowohl actionreiche als auch ruhige Projektion des Karlsruher Medienkünstlers Jonas Denzel rückt die vielfältige Arbeit der Feuerwehr ins Rampenlicht und zeigt, wie jeder Einsatz, jede Geste und jedes Geräusch Teil eines großen Ganzen ist.
In 2026, the Karlsruhe Professional Fire Department will celebrate its 100th anniversary, honouring its service, solidarity and passion. The projection by Karlsruhe-based media artist Jonas Denzel—both action-packed and calm—highlights the diverse work of the fire department and shows how every operation, every gesture and every sound is part of a bigger picture.

Yulia Mashkova, Grisha Mumrikov Fragile Homes, 2026 Die Gewinner-Arbeit des dm-Awards „connecting worlds“ 2026 untersucht die bürokratische Erschöpfung der modernen Gesell schaft und stellt diese in Zusammenhang mit Fluchterfahrungen und Fluchtrouten. Das digitale und analoge Kunstwerk besteht aus einem Videomapping auf der Schlossfassade und Skulpturen am Prinz-Max-Palais, die gemeinsam mit Bürger:innen in einem offenen Workshop entstanden sind. Die Arbeiten verbinden zwei Bedeutungen von Papier: als Rohstoff des Waldes und als Werkzeug administrativer Kontrolle. Die interaktiven Licht und SoundSkulpturen werden beim Herantreten aktiviert.

The winning entry for the dm-Award “connecting worlds” 2026 explores the bureaucratic exhaustion of modern society and links this to experiences of flight and refugee routes. The artwork, which is both digital and analog consists of a video mapping on the palace façade and sculptures at the Prinz-Max-Palais—created together with citizens in an open workshop—the work connects two meanings of paper: as a raw material of the forest and as a tool of administrative control.
