City Map of Karlsruhe
ZKM | Center for Art and Media including the Hallenbau cultural quarter

In the heart of Karlsruhe stands the Hallenbau, a former munitions factory built in 1915. One hundred years later, this listed industrial monument has become one of Germany’s most fascinating venues for art, education, and artistic research. Ten distinctive light-filled courtyards stretch across 300 meters, bringing together four major institutions under one roof: Karlsruhe Art Museum –a showcase for the art of the 20th and 21st centuries and the city’s current art scene, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, internationally renowned for its focus on electronic and time-based art and artistic research, State Art Gallery Karlsruhe, home to an important collection of medieval and French art, and HfG | Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, an international center for learning and experimentation in art, theory, and design.
Within the extraordinary atmosphere of this industrial monument, the Hallenbau offers diverse perspectives on art and artistic creation through exhibitions, events, debates, co-working spaces, a media library, museum shops, and a café. With around 280,000 visitors per year, the Hallenbau serves as a vibrant meeting place for people of all generations and nationalities.
As a unique ensemble within Karlsruhe’s museum landscape, the Hallenbau unites research, teaching, and more than 600 years of art history under one roof — from Old Masters through Modernism and the postwar period to contemporary art, sculpture, and postmodern media installations.

Guided tour of Karlsruhe Zoological City Garden
A family-friendly green oasis in the heart of the city

Stadtgarten area (City Garden area)
The “Stadtgarten” is home to around 800 impressive trees from many countries, 15,000 roses of 130 varieties, numerous tulips and summer flowers, perennials and climbing plants. The Japanese garden is also famous, a miniature landscape with a Shinto shrine, stone lions and a pagoda. The City Garden is home to over 4,000 animals of 250 species – from elephants to small meerkats.
Zoological area
The animal world is presented in themed areas. In the “Water Habitat”, redesigned in 2009, sea lions, seals and penguins live in natural coastal landscapes with underwater viewing windows. In addition, the polar bear enclosure with its tundra-like appearance also offers fascinating underwater views. In the “African Savannah”, numerous African animal species can be seen in three large enclosures. On the eastern slope of the Lauterberg lies the “Himalayan Mountain World” with rare snow leopards. Since 2015, the Exotic House with around 2,000 animals – including birds, bats, white-faced sakis and two-toed sloths – has complemented the offering.
Themed tours in the zoo and in the “Stadtgarten” available for booking.

Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe

The Baden State Theatre is located in the heart of Karlsruhe and is one of the largest multi-genre theatres in Germany. Its opera, concert, ballet, drama, youth theatre and newly founded digital theatre departments create a varied and diverse cultural offering for the region: artistic experiences that come alive in the hearts and minds of the audience, resonating, touching and moving them.
Over 900 events per year take place in the theatres, at guest performances or in special locations around the city. The Baden State Theatre is a crowd puller in the city for the city. It shines beyond Karlsruhe as a beacon: regionally, nationally and internationally.
A special highlight is the International Händel Festival, which always takes place in Karlsruhe from the end of February to the beginning of March and attracts both national and international audiences. The festival programme brings together the stars of tomorrow with the big names of the baroque scene. For two weeks, they open up a world full of baroque magic and make Karlsruhe a meeting place for the international music scene.

Genesis by Markus Lüpertz

It is Germany’s largest contiguous ceramic artwork, and even the creation of the GENESIS cycle by the renowned artist Markus Lüpertz in Karlsruhe’s city railway tunnel was spectacular. The underground “365 Days Gallery” in Karlsruhe is unique for several reasons: this flagship project was realized entirely without public funding, thanks to generous donations and sponsorships. The financing was made possible through the enthusiasm of companies and private patrons, driven by the project’s initiator, Anton Goll, who conceived the idea and supervised the unique art project over seven years until its opening. Thus, the artwork was literally “put on track” – the Karlsruhe subway as a carrier of a high-caliber Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art). A creative journey from DARKNESS to LIGHT.
Discover our cultural mile with 14 individual highlights at seven stations. Learn fascinating details about the masterful achievements of everyone involved in the creation and installation of Germany’s largest ceramic artwork, and explore the creative vision behind Lüpertz’s GENESIS cycle.
Our guided tour offers an insight into Markus Lüpertz’s artistic interpretation, yet it still leaves the viewer with plenty of room for their own exciting interpretations.
Important Information
To participate in the city tour, please purchase the necessary public transport tickets (zone 100; e.g., a 1-day ticket depending on the number of persons or single tickets). Please note that separate tickets are required for both the outbound and return journeys, as they are not included in the tour price. Due to maintenance and service work in the subway, short-term closures may occur, which could necessitate rescheduling or cancellation of the tour.
