Walk the stories that built this coast

Designated a World War II American Heritage City in December 2022, Corpus Christi’s contributions to the war effort run deep: from the naval aviators trained along its shores to the ports that kept the Allied effort moving. The WWII American Heritage City Trail connects the key sites that tell that story. Here are some highlights to explore:

WORLD WAR II HERITAGE Corpus Christi downtown Seawall Completed in 1941, the Corpus Christi Downtown Seawall united the community on the eve of America entering the war and later served as the site of war bond rallies. It still stretches along the bayfront today.

USS Lexington Museum Nicknamed the “Blue Ghost,” the USS Lexington is an Essex Class aircraft carrier that served 21 months in the Pacific theater before finding its permanent home on the Corpus Christi Bayfront. Open to the public since 1992, it’s one of the most visited attractions in the Coastal Bend.

Padre Island National Seashore Long before it became a beloved national seashore, Padre Island served as a crucial bombing practice ground for air station pilots. Seven Navy-designated targets allowed pilots to sharpen their accuracy in live training runs. Today, visitors to Padre Island National Seashore can explore its natural beauty knowing the ground beneath them holds a remarkable wartime story.

Port of Corpus Christi & Intracoastal Waterway The Port of Corpus Christi served as a vital transportation hub for troops and military supplies, while the Intracoastal Waterway offered a protected route away from U-boat threats in open waters.

U.S. Naval Air Station Corpus Christi A primary training base for Navy and Marine Corps aviators during the war, NAS-CC was home to an innovative simulated carrier deck that prepared pilots for real combat conditions. The aviators trained here played instrumental roles in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

Sherrill Veteran’s Memorial Park Named for Warren Sherrill, the first casualty from the Corpus Christi area at Pearl Harbor, Sherrill Veteran’s Memorial Park features a 600-pound bronze plaque honoring 399 local residents who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Ward Island Radar Station Acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1942, Ward Island trained around 10,000 radar technicians who were critical to detecting enemy aircraft and submarines. Today it’s home to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

The Heart of the Coastal Bend Hispanic Heritage & Tejano Music

Corpus Christi’s identity is inseparable from its Hispanic heritage. For generations, the culture, traditions, and spirit of the Hispanic community have shaped this city into what it is today, from the food on the table to the music in the air. It’s a presence felt in every neighborhood, every festival, and every family gathering along the coast. Nowhere is that more alive than in Tejano music. Born from the blend of Mexican and American influences, Tejano is a genre that belongs to South Texas in a way that can’t be replicated anywhere else. It’s the sound of accordions and bajo sextos, of dance floors packed on a Saturday night, of a culture that has always found joy and pride in its own voice. Corpus Christi has long been a center of that sound, producing artists, nurturing talent, and celebrating the music that has defined the region for decades, with places like Freddie Records helping keep that legacy going. Today, that heritage is celebrated throughout the year at festivals, cultural events, and community gatherings that welcome everyone to pull up a chair and be part of the story. Whether you’re exploring the murals that tell the city’s history, savoring the flavors of authentic Tex-Mex, or catching live music along the bayfront, you’re experiencing a culture that is generous, proud, and very much alive.

Selena

Few artists have left a mark on a city the way Selena Quintanilla left one on Corpus Christi. A trailblazer in Tejano music, she broke barriers in a male-dominated industry, earned the title of Queen of Tejano, and became one of the most celebrated Latina artists in history. Her legacy lives on in the music, the murals, and the people who still celebrate her every day. These are the places where you can feel that connection:

Mirador de la Flor A life-size bronze statue overlooking Corpus Christi Bay, with a flower walk below tiled by South Texas schoolchildren and senior citizens. Visit at night when colored lights above the statue light up like a concert stage.

Selena Museum Located at the family’s music studio, Q-Productions, the museum houses original photographs, her red Porsche, iconic self-designed stage outfits, and records. Open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Selena Auditorium Renamed in her honor in 1996, this 2,500-seat venue continues to host live performances and community events. It’s a fitting tribute for an artist who lived for the stage.

Texas Walk of Fame Star Find Selena’s star near the Executive Surf Club fountain, immortalized with musical notes bearing the Texas flag. Her legacy lives on alongside the artists who helped define the sound of South Texas.

Molina Neighborhood Mural A watercolor tribute on the side of the Times Market, just blocks from where she lived. Three portraits of Selena, her signature, and the words: “The goal isn’t to live forever...the goal is to create something that will.”

Hi-Ho Restaurant A Coastal Bend institution for over 45 years, Hi-Ho was one of Selena’s favorite spots — order her go-to Carne Guisada surrounded by never-before-seen photos and her artwork on the walls.

Don’t leave without stopping next door at Scoopy’s Veranda for a handcrafted Blue Bell dessert like the famous Chocolate Barnacle, layered with a cookie bottom, creamy ice cream middle, and rich mousse topping. Tucked just behind the marina, The Hemingway Bar is the kind of hidden gem that rewards the ones who find it. Boaters can dock right at the bar while enjoying craft cocktails and live music every Friday through Sunday. Right next door, Doc’s Seafood & Steaks rounds out the island dining experience with blackened fish, buttery crab cakes, and stuffed flounder fresh from the Gulf, all served alongside unobstructed indoor and outdoor waterfront views and live music. Barbecue

Nueces Brewing Co. They came for the craft beer. Then came the BBQ, and nobody looked back. Set inside a restored downtown car dealership, Nueces Brewing has built a reputation as much for its smoky, loaded Brisket Nachos as for its cold pints. A downtown visit isn’t complete without both.

Hoegemeyer’s BBQ Barn Housed in a building that predates 1920, Hoegemeyer’s BBQ Barn brings the kind of character you can’t manufacture. Traditional BBQ, house-made sides, and an eclectic take on “sammiches” served in a space that feels like home.

Full Send BBQ No shortcuts. No compromises. Full Send BBQ earns its name with mesquite-smoked meats, award-winning Texas-style technique, and house-made sides that hold their own alongside the main event. This is BBQ with a commitment to doing it right, every single time.

Garrett’s Barbecue Patience is the secret ingredient at Garrett’s Barbecue. Briskets take nearly 24 hours from start to serving: low, slow, and built on care. The result is smoked brisket, ribs, and sausage that speak for themselves. Every bite reflects the time put into it.

Howard’s BBQ Legendary mesquite-smoked brisket. Tender, flavorful ribs. Unlimited fixins. Howard’s BBQ checks every box and then offers you “The Jimmy” — a tortilla stuffed with sliced brisket, sausage, and chopped beef — just in case you needed another reason to show up. Down-home and deeply Texan, every time.

Whether you’re cheering on cowboys, loading up on good food, or watching the illuminated parade light up the night, Buc Days is a memorable festival. Grab your boots. The Gulf Coast Capital is ready.

Día de los Muertos Street Festival The Día de los Muertos Street Festival in Downtown Corpus Christi is one of South Texas’s most anticipated cultural celebrations. Stroll through streets alive with music, dance, and the colorful tradition of ofrendas honoring those who’ve passed. Take in local art, indulge in food from the best food trucks, and feel the pulse of a community honoring its heritage with pride. This is the festival that fills Downtown Corpus Christi with life, color, and culture every year, and it’s not one to miss.

Birdiest Festival in America Corpus Christi has held the title of “Birdiest City in America” for over two decades, and this annual festival at the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is where bird enthusiasts and nature lovers come to experience why. Expert-led birding tours, educational workshops, and an incredible front-row seat to the migratory and native species that call this coast home. Come discover what makes Corpus Christi a world-class birding destination.

Surftoberfest The most coastal beer fest you’ll ever raise a stein to. Held in Downtown Corpus Christi at Water Street Market, Surftoberfest brings together all of Corpus Christi’s local breweries in one epic annual celebration. Sample draught brews, explore the pop-up tasting room in the Waterstreet Garden, or grab a souvenir stein at the start and refill as you go. It’s German heritage, Gulf Coast energy, and a whole lot of good times. Prost.

Mayor’s Big Bang Celebration Corpus Christi throws one of the best Fourth of July celebrations in Texas, and it’s free for everyone. Head to the Corpus Christi Bayfront with your crew for live music, food trucks, familyfriendly activities, and a fireworks show over the water that has to be seen to be believed. No tickets, no barriers, just a whole city coming together to light up the night.

Texas Jazz Festival The longest-running free jazz festival in the country calls Corpus Christi home. Held annually in Heritage Park, the Texas Jazz Festival brings together local, national, and international musicians across multiple stages for a weekend that’s as laidback as the coast itself with food vendors, artisan booths, and great music in the open air. It’s a must-attend in the Gulf Coast Capital.

Holiday Boat Parades In Corpus Christi, holiday cheer hits differently when it’s glowing on the water. Two festive boat parades bring the season to life along the coast each December. The Port of Corpus Christi Illuminated Boat Parade lights up the Downtown Seawall as lighted vessels compete for the most festive display of the season, so stay after for the party. Then head to Padre Island for La Posada Lighted Boat Parade, a two-night South Texas tradition running the Intracoastal Waterway with the spirit of a posada, great food, entertainment, and the U.S. Marines collecting toys for kids in need. Two nights, two locations, one coastal holiday season worth making plans for.

Sharkathon One of Texas’ premier surf fishing competitions, held right on Corpus Christi beaches and Padre Island National Seashore. Sharkathon is built on conservation, and this catch-and-release tournament draws anglers of all skill levels across categories like shark, redfish, and kingfish. It’s a weekend of big catches, good company, and a deep respect for the water that makes this coast special. Come be part of a one-of-a-kind fishing tradition.

Family First on the Texas Coast

Corpus Christi is the kind of place that makes families want to stay longer than they planned. Whether you’re rolling in with toddlers, tweens, or teens, the coast has a way of meeting every age right where they are, with experiences that feel genuine, not manufactured. Load up the car, leave the itinerary loose, and let Corpus Christi fill in the rest.

Texas State Aquarium Kids will love the expanded H-E-B Splash Park at the Texas State Aquarium, now three times its original size and packed with Caribbean-inspired water fun, from a multi-level slide to a 350-gallon water dump and shaded seating for parents. Inside, Ocean Odyssey adds another layer of play with a multilevel, indoor discovery center designed for climbing, exploring, and hands-on learning inspired by wildlife rescue. As part of the experience, kids can also enjoy touch pools, feed stingrays at the 10,000-gallon Stingray Lagoon, and catch a dolphin presentation at Dolphin Bay that’s equal parts entertaining and eye-opening. Plan ahead, because this one fills a full day fast.

Hooks Baseball at Whataburger Field Whataburger Field is built for families, with one of the best kids zones in minor league baseball including a little league field, basketball court, playground, and even a poolside rental option right next to the action. Grab your Whataburger, stay for Friday fireworks, and keep an eye out for H-E-B Kids Days and weekly deals. This is a Texas night out done right.

In the Game Funtrackers With over 80 arcade games, go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf, and prizes waiting to be won, In the Game Funtrackers hands the itinerary over to the kids and everybody’s better for it. Whether you’re competing or just keeping up, the fun here runs on its own schedule.

Treasure Island Golf Snap a photo with the iconic mermaid statue, then take on the outdoor mini golf course before ducking into the indoor arcade for a few more rounds. Treasure Island is the kind of low-key, everybody-wins stop that earns a spot on the road trip highlight reel every time.

Corpus Christi Museum of Science & History Enjoy exhibits built to be touched, explored, and experienced, with life-sized replicas and interactive displays that bring decades of South Texas history and science to life in a way textbooks never could. The H-E-B Science Center keeps young minds engaged from the moment they walk in, and summer camps give kids an even deeper dive into the world around them. It’s the kind of place they’ll ask to come back to.

South Texas Botanical Gardens Take the family to meet Ivan the Iguana in the Reptile Room, spot exotic parrots and native birds along the wildlife corridor, and keep an eye out for the alligators at Gator Lake. Kids can explore the playground and sensory garden, while “Reptales,” nature camps, and weekend programs give younger visitors something hands-on to look forward to. Beautiful, educational, and genuinely surprising around every corner.

USS Lexington Museum Step aboard one of WWII’s most storied aircraft carriers and see what life at sea really looked like. Kids will go wide-eyed exploring 20 life-sized historic aircraft up close on the selfguided flight deck tour, and the F/A-18 flight simulator lets them step into the cockpit for the “Screaming Eagles” training exercise like a real naval pilot. Cap the visit with a show at the Joe Jessel Mega 4D Theater for a full day of hands-on history the whole family will feel.

Sea Turtle Releases Every summer, Padre Island National Seashore hosts public releases of Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, one of the world’s most endangered species, as hatchlings make their first journey to the Gulf. Releases happen at sunrise from June through August and are first-come, first-served. Arrive early, stand back, and let the coast do the rest.

Explore the Downtown Seawall Rent a surrey bike and cruise the bayfront at your own pace, stopping at the miradors for open water views. On Wednesday evenings, watch local sailors race across the bay from the Corpus Christi Marina, at the Regatta sailboat races, a perfect photo moment and a mid-week treat. Then walk through space on the Voyage Through the Solar System exhibition, a 2,000foot scale-model solar system stretching along the shoreline showcasing Pluto all the way to the sun only in Corpus Christi.
