Just 12 miles south of Bloomington near Monroe Lake is the town of Harrodsburg. Established in 1837, this small town is host to numerous community events including the Harrodsburg Heritage Festival held in May each year. Outdoor experiences are aplenty, from hiking at Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve , to enjoying the many water activities available at nearby Monroe Lake .

Located just seven miles west of Bloomington, Ellettsville is known for its hometown atmosphere and being the central hub of the local limestone industry. There you’ll find family-style restaurants and great antique shopping, as well as annual special events including the Indiana Limestone Symposium in June, the Monroe County Fall Festival in September, and the Hilly Hundred Bicycle Tour in October.

Incorporated in 1855, this quaint small town is located 14 miles northwest of Bloomington near Ellettsville. It was once at the center of the thriving limestone industry, evidence of which can still be seen as you drive along the winding country roads through town. Be sure to visit in the fall when the annual Stone Quarry Festival takes place and make sure you stop in the Mercantile of Stinesville, a historic 1800’s building offering groceries, convenience items, fountain soda, a restaurant, and a post office.
Seven miles south of Bloomington you will find the town of Smithville. This town is also close to Monroe Lake —if you are on your way to the Fairfax State Recreation Area , make sure to swing by the Smithville Saturday Farmers’ Market for fresh produce, plants, and live music. If you’re visiting on Labor Day, stop by the Smithville in the Park Labor Day Car Show where you can admire classic cars, hot rods, and more. The annual Smithville Holiday Bazaar in November is a great way to get a jump start on your holiday shopping.

Accessibility is a vital part of a diverse and inclusive environment, and one that Bloomington is continually taking part in. Here are seven outdoor accessibility-friendly activities that the whole family can take part in.
Karst Farm Park, the first county park to be established in Monroe County, offers both an accessibility-friendly playground and splashpad to enjoy. Surrounding the playground and splashpad, you will see the nature scenes that makes it one of the area’s most attractive parks.
Bryan Park completed a new juvenile playground (intended for kids 5-12) with accessible play features, including ground-level sensory elements, a wheelchair accessible carousel spinner, and buddy swings.

Griffy Lake has a walkway to the fishing pier that gives those with accessibility needs the opportunity to fish from the shoreline. The walkway is located along Headley Road. The lake also has accessible parking available.
One of the largest and most accessible playgrounds is located at Lower Cascades Park. The park also has a shelter with a large grill, electrical outlets, lights, a fireplace, water, drinking fountain, playground access, and a large parking lot. All of those activities are wheelchair accessible.

Paynetown SRA (east side) and Fairfax SRA (west side) have new accessibility features with an access path to the swimming beach. The ramp extends from the bottom of the ramp to the shoreline in hopes that all visitors can access the water more easily.

Part of the B-Line Trail runs through Switchyard Park and is paved to be accessibility-friendly. The paved portion is 3.1 miles long. The park also has a spray pad, that is accessible, which allows visitors to play and run in the water. Admission to the spray pad is free. As of June 13, 2025, Switchyard Park will house the City’s first tactile map. The map is located next to the Pavilion and B-Line Trail. The map features raised textures, braille labels, and color contrast to help those who are blind or have low vision to navigate the 65-acre park.
Will Detmer Park has a fishing pier that is wheelchair accessible. The pond is stocked every other year by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. State regulations and bag limits still apply while fishing in the park. The park also has a paved trail with loops around the pond and a playground that are accessible.
WonderLab has several accessible accommodations, including a barrier-free building, accessible restrooms, elevators, wheelchairs, and a sensory backpack. The backpack has noise-cancelling headphones, fidgets, sunglasses, and feeling cards. They also have a wheelchair access to the WonderGarden.
For any questions or concerns about each park’s accessibility requirements, please contact the park directly.

Bloomington is far more than a charming college town. Our city is full of architectural surprises and masterpieces where each structure tells a story of place and purpose.

Designed by architect I.M. Pei and completed in 1982. This building’s triangular design, composed of limestone and glass, contains no right angles, reflecting Pei’s modernist style. A major renovation in 2019 introduced new galleries, improved natural lighting, and updated facilities while maintaining the original architectural vision.
County Courthouse
Built in 1908, the Monroe County Courthouse is designed in the Beaux Arts style and constructed from local limestone. A gilded fish weathervane sits atop the copper dome, a distinctive feature that has become a local landmark. Inside, the courthouse features a central rotunda with a stained-glass dome, marble columns, and detailed plasterwork that highlight the craftsmanship of the early 20th century.

Opened in 1922 as the Indiana Theatre, the BCT is designed in the Spanish Mission Revival style. The restored interior includes original plaster details, decorative lighting, and a classic marquee on the exterior. Today, it serves as a performing arts venue and community gathering space in downtown Bloomington.

Originally built in 1910 as part of the Showers Brothers Furniture Company factory, this structure was renovated in 1995. It retains its industrial character, with brick walls, large windows, saw-tooth roof, and exposed structural elements. The renovation still preserved much of the original exterior while creating modern office and public spaces inside.

The Pfau Course at Indiana University
Opened in 2020, the Pfau Course was designed by golf course architect Steve Smyers in collaboration with professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller. The course was built to fit the natural curves of southern Indiana’s landscape, featuring rolling terrain, native grasses, and treelined fairways.

Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center
Founded in 1979 by Thubten Jigme Norbu, the elder brother of the 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center sits on more than 100 acres south of Bloomington. The site includes traditional Tibetan-style stupas, temples, and prayer wheels surrounded by wooded grounds. The design and layout emphasize peace, reflection, and cultural education.

It only takes one visit to IU Bloomington to realize this is your place. That’s because here, you’ll find an inspiring setting, high-tech classrooms and labs, gorgeous arts venues, and plenty of grand spaces like the Indiana Memorial Union or Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall where you can join fellow Hoosiers in spirited activities.
At IU Bloomington, we’re not only a great place to visit but you’ll see how serious we are about developing the leaders, researchers, entrepreneurs, and innovators of tomorrow by investing everything we have in IU students today.
