estled along the scenic shores of Lake Erie, the Grand River Valley wine region offers a unique experience for those seeking an unforgettable escape. Known for its picturesque landscapes, charming small towns, and warm hospitality, this corner of Northeast Ohio has quietly emerged as one of the most exciting wine destinations in the Midwest. Whether you're an experienced wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast looking to explore new flavors, Ashtabula County’s vineyards and wineries provide an exceptional backdrop for indulgence, relaxation, and discovery.

The Grand River Valley is home to some of Ohio’s oldest and most acclaimed vineyards, with more than 30 wineries thriving throughout the area. This region benefits from a rare combination of rolling glacial hills, mineral-rich soils, and the moderating effect of Lake Erie’s breezes—conditions

Thanks to this unique microclimate, the area consistently produces high-quality grapes ideal for varietals like Riesling, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and the region’s highly praised ice wines.

Visitors are often surprised by the abundance and diversity of vineyards, each offering its own blend of tradition, innovation, and personality. Many wineries carry deep family roots, with generations of winemakers perfecting their craft.

From crisp whites to complex reds and decadent sweet wines, the Grand River Valley continues to make its mark with award-winning offerings that rival the best in the country.

There is perhaps no better way to experience Ohio Wine Country than by taking a leisurely vineyard tour. As you wander through rows of lush vines, you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the tranquil countryside—rolling farmland, wooded landscapes, and breathtaking sunsets that glow across Lake Erie.

Many of the area’s wineries offer guided tours where guests can learn about the intricacies of the winemaking process, from the careful harvesting of grapes to the art and science of fermentation, aging, and blending. These behind-the-scenes experiences provide a deeper understanding of the region’s agricultural heritage and the immense care that goes into every bottle.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Ohio has a “cool-climate viticulture,” similar to many European, Australian, and California growing regions.

• The resulting wines made from cool-climate grapes have full fruit flavors but slightly higher acidity. The wines have a clean, crisp flavor and go very well with food.

• Many types of grapes successfully thrive in the soil across the state. Some of the most popular are Vitis vinifera (European wine grape or common grape) varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot, and are joined in the vineyards by French-American hybrids such as Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc and Traminette.

Stories of Family Legacy and Resilience in Ohio Wine Country

In the heart of Ohio’s Grand River Valley, the link between wine and family has written a story defined by perseverance that’s been passed down through generations.

It’s a story of legacy, like that of the Kosiceks, a fourth-generation family who, faced with selling their century-old farm, chose instead to build their dream on the soil they grew up on. It’s a testament to resilience, embodied by the Ferrantes, a group of siblings who watched their winery burn to the ground, only to rise from the ashes stronger than before. And it’s a story of love, found at Debonné Vineyards, where a pioneering vintner and a curious customer built not only Ohio’s first postProhibition winery but a beautiful life together.

These three families represent the heart and soul of Ohio Wine Country. Their deep-rooted heritage and fierce passion are poured into every bottle, offering a truly personal taste of the region.

Debonné Vineyards

THE DYNAMiC DEBEvCS

When you stroll the rolling acres of Debonné Vineyards, tucked in Ohio’s Grand River Valley, there’s rich history in the soil beneath your feet. It’s not just wine being cultivated here — it’s a family legacy over half a century in the making.

“I approached my parents about building a small winery on the farm,” recalls Tony Debevc, president of Chalet Debonné Vineyards. “We already had vineyards here… After my military obligation, I came home, and we jumped right into it.”

That leap of faith made Debonné the first new winery in Northeast Ohio since Prohibition. “We started our operation by building the initial structure in 1971 and opened to the public in March of 1972,” Tony says. “We drew a lot of attention from the media about this ‘new winery.’”

It wasn’t long before Debonné became the backdrop to another kind of growth story. A curious local named Beth, who then “drank Stroh’s [beer], not wine,” remembers when her parents discovered the winery. “My mom came back and said, ‘You’ve got to go to this winery, it’s so cool,’” she laughs. “Sure enough, Tony was working behind the bar... a few visits later, we started talking… and that was it.”

Tony jokes that he “was looking for free help.” Even in those early days, Debonné evolved beyond a business into a shared life’s work.

The first decade wasn’t easy, if for reasons most other small businesses would be jealous of: “My parents wanted a small family business,” Tony says. “But we were overrun with customers — we had way more customers than we had product. We grew in spite of ourselves.”

Beth remembers those years as a blend of chaos and joy. “When I started here, I wanted to make it just as nice as it could possibly be,” she says. “I told everybody I was going to retire at 70 — I’m going to be 75. But what was I going to do? This is our life.”

By the early 2000s, their son joined the family business, adding a modern twist by starting a small brewery at the facility, which helped attract a new generation of visitors.

Now, the Debevcs are expanding again with a new multi-million dollar facility in Geneva. Still, it’s the Grand River Valley that keeps them home. “What I really like about this region is the four seasons,” Tony says. “Spring is exciting... Summer is our busy time. Fall is the culmination of hard work. Winter is our recharge.”

That sense of place infuses everything at Debonné. Beth sees it every day from behind the bar as strangers become friends and travelers turn into regulars.

“We offer an experience,” she says. “Our friends now are people who were once customers. We travel together — if we’d had office jobs, we never would’ve had those friendships.”

Half a century later, Debonné remains a living symbol of Ohio’s evolving wine country. “I decided many years ago that it probably wouldn’t be best to die with my boots on,” Tony says with a grin. “But as long as I have the mental capacity to do it... I’ll keep going.”

And Beth, ever the grounding force, adds simply: “We built this together. And honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Kosicek Vineyards

4 GENERATIONS ON FAMILY SOIL

In the heart of the Grand River Valley, Kosicek Vineyards is a testament to family, perseverance, and the art of winemaking. Transcending business, Kosicek’s is a centuryold story, a connection to the land that you can taste in every glass.

The tale begins in the 1920s when Tony Kosicek's grandparents immigrated from Slovenia and planted Concord grapes in Harpersfield, Ohio. For decades, the family farm supplied Welch's, a vital part of the region's agricultural engine. That legacy was nearly lost 15 years ago when the family received a lucrative offer to sell the farm. For the Kosiceks, however, selling was unthinkable. "It wasn't going to fly to sell the family farm," states third-generation steward Tony Kosicek. "So, we decided to do our own thing and open a small winery."

The decision was sealed by the fourth generation. "My dad came home one day and told my brother and me he thought that he was going to sell the family farm," recalls his daughter, Emma. "And my brother and I just started crying... we were totally against the idea."

Building the winery required a total commitment, transitioning the farm to grow classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. It demanded what Emma calls “literal blood, sweat, and tears.” Today, that dedication is the winery's guiding principle. "Our entire family works here," Tony says with pride. "You're going to find one of us here most all the time."

This hands-on approach is grounded in a simple yet powerful philosophy. "Our main goal is to have quality wine," he explains. "We don't try to be a restaurant. We grow grapes. We make wine." For Tony, the ultimate reward is seeing visitors enjoy the fruits of their labor. "I enjoy the look on their face when they see grapevines, see a true winery... and they can enjoy the award-winning wines that we produce."

While Tony grounds the operation in its history, Emma drives its innovative future. After returning home from college, she found her calling. "I just fell in love with what I was doing here," she says. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime." As assistant winemaker, she experiments with an annual "passion project," creating unique, small-batch wines that push the boundaries of Ohio wine.

A visit to Kosicek Vineyards is an invitation into that story – a chance to taste wines born from a century of history and shaped by the passion of the next generation.

Ferrante Winery & Ristorante

FORGED iN FiRE, REBUiLT BY FAMiLY

A visit to Ferrante Winery & Ristorante is an immersion in la dolce vita, Ohio-style. It’s the aroma of scratch-made Italian specialties, the sound of friends laughing over a shared bottle, and the sight of sprawling vineyards disappearing over the hills of the Grand River Valley. It feels established, permanent. But Ferrante’s beautiful, mission-style winery, which stands today, is a testament to resilience and a story forged in fire.

“My grandmother and grandfather started this winery in Collinwood, Cleveland,” explains Nick, the family’s winemaker and general manager. “They immigrated from Italy, and they made wine for the neighborhood.”

In 1942, the Ferrantes purchased a farm in Harpersfield to grow Concord grapes, trucking them back to their urban winery. It was a dual-location operation for decades until, as third-generation owner Carmel Ferrante-Arbucheski puts it, “In 1979, they brought the winery to the grapes.”

Carmel’s father, a carpenter by trade, built the original winery, running it part-time. “He really worked six days a week,” Carmel recalls. “Sundays were off, church, and pasta day.” That ethos –faith, family, food, and hard work – became the foundation of the business. In 1983, a small Italian restaurant was added. The reasoning was simple: “Wine and food go together,” Carmel says.

For years, the second generation and the emerging third generation worked to build the business. Then, in 1994, the foundation they built was reduced to ash.

“We had a fire here in 1994, and that kind of set our course,” says Nick “It changed our whole outlook. That was probably the most defining moment in our business history and our family history.”

The fire resulted in a total loss, but in the ashes of the winery the family’s future was resolved for the better. “My dad said, ‘Look, if you guys want to do this, you can do this,’ and that really solidified our commitment to rebuild,” recalls Mary Jo.

Left: Pete (Papa) Ferrante & Josephine (Mama) Ferrante

“We rebuilt this fabulous place we have now. We planted vineyards,” says Nick. “It was just a spark that turned our lives around, basically.”

The fabulous place they rebuilt is run by four siblings who have found a remarkable synergy. When asked how they make it work, the answer is a blend of mutual respect and a learned professionalism.

Mary Jo echoes their parents’ wisdom: “My parents always said, ‘Family is family, and business is business.’ So, we kind of just grew up that way, and we respect what we all do.”

This clear division of labor allows each sibling to excel – and cuts down on the usual bickering. For Nick that meant stepping up to fill a crucial role. “My brother and my cousin did not want to make the wine, so I said I would,” he laughs. “I had no idea how to make wine. I took it upon myself to learn, and I stepped up.” Thirtyfive years later, his award-winning wines are a testament to him making the right decision.

In the restaurant and tasting room, Carmel and Mary Jo cultivate a welcoming atmosphere that extends their family’s tradition of hospitality to every guest. “My passion is really being in the wine room,” Carmel beams. “I love talking with people... they become friends.” Mary Jo sees their role as providing a backdrop for connection. “We take pride in having people come and discover their family through family reunions – we’re just the place for them,” she says. “Just to enjoy each day, sip and savor, and enjoy the afternoon.”

That legacy now looks toward its fourth generation. The siblings are hopeful, but also realistic. “It’s challenging to transition to the next generation,” Mary Jo muses. “You do need that passion to make it successful. It’s something that they have to make that decision within themselves to want it. Because it truly is a lifestyle.”

It’s that passion and lifestyle that defines Ferrantes Winery & Ristorante. It’s a place where tradition is shared – a delicious legacy of family, food, and wine.

Ice Wine

Ice wine is a dessert wine made from grapes that are naturally frozen on the vine. The process of making ice wine is unique and requires specific conditions, typically cold weather and a late harvest. Here’s how it works:

HARvESTiNG: The grapes are left on the vine until they freeze, usually in late fall or early winter. For ice wine production, the grapes must reach about 17°F or colder temperatures for 24 hours.

FREEziNG: As the grapes freeze, the water inside them turns into ice crystals, concentrating the sugars, acids, and flavors. The grapes are picked while frozen and then immediately pressed to extract the juice.

PRESSiNG: Because the frozen water remains in the grapes as ice, only the concentrated, sugary juice is pressed out, resulting in a smaller yield but a much sweeter and more flavorful liquid. This juice has a higher sugar concentration than regular grape juice.

FERMENTATiON: The concentrated juice is then fermented, typically longer than other wines, to create a rich, sweet wine with a balanced acidity. The result is a wine with intense fruity flavors.

CHARACTERiSTiCS: Ice wines are known for their deep sweetness and vibrant acidity, creating a well-balanced and refreshing dessert wine. They tend to have a golden or amber color, and their alcohol content is usually lower than that of dry wines, typically around 9-12%. Ice wine is often served as a dessert or paired with rich foods.

An annual celebration of ice wine takes place throughout the month of March at area wineries.

Can't Miss Events in Ashtabula County and Ohio Wine Country

Ashtabula County’s 2026 calendar kicks off with springtime wine-country trails and festivals that highlight the region’s vineyards. Starting in March, the Annual Ice Wine Festival invites wine lovers to sample estate wines paired with appetizers or desserts across multiple wineries in the Grand River Valley. That momentum continues through April with the Spring Sparkling Bubbly Trail and the Bunny Hop Wine & Cocktail Trail — both offering relaxed tastings of sparkling or spring-themed wines alongside small plates.

As summer arrives, the county offers a mix of family-friendly festivals, food & drink events, and outdoor-themed gatherings. In June, the Beach Glass Festival at Ashtabula Harbor draws collectors, artisans, and food vendors for a seaside arts festival. Early July features the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club’s Summer Show — a multi-day nostalgic event showcasing tractors, antique cars, blacksmithing, crafts, and more. Then late July brings the Wine & Walleye Festival, where visitors pair regional wines with fresh Lake Erie walleye and enjoy live music.

As the seasons shift into fall and winter, Ashtabula County continues celebrating heritage, harvest, history, and holidays. Early August features a sprawling historical experience with the D-Day Reenactment — the country’s largest WWII living-history event staged on the shores of Lake Erie. In early September, the big bike-lover event Thunder on the Strip revs up Geneva-on-the-Lake with a rally, bike parade, vendor village, and live entertainment.

Many annual events welcome visitors from near and far. It's not uncommon for lodging to book a year in advance.

Late September’s Grape Jamboree Festival celebrates the grape harvest with grape-themed foods, grape stomping, vendors, and music.

October’s Covered Bridge Festival invites a scenic self-guided tour of the county’s 19 historic covered bridges, along with music and refreshments. As the year winds down, December’s Holidays in the Village in Geneva-on-the-Lake turns the village into a festive holiday destination with popup shops, decorations, and seasonal specials.

COVERED BRIDGES Passages to History

6 CAn't MISS COVERED BRIDGES

1. Smolen–Gulf Covered Bridge

The longest covered bridge in the United States, stretching an impressive 613 feet and soaring nearly 100 feet above the river. Drive or walk its pedestrian walkways for unforgettable views.

2. Riverview Covered Bridge

One of the county’s newest and most scenic pedestrian bridges, Riverview sits just downstream from the iconic Smolen–Gulf Bridge. Its timber design, forested surroundings, and walkway overlook create a perfect spot for photos, quiet nature moments, and views of the river gorge below.

3. Harpersfield Covered Bridge

Dating back to 1868, this iconic span over the Grand River is beloved for its historic charm and scenic riverside setting. A pedestrian walkway makes it perfect for strolls and photos.

4. Mechanicsville Road Covered Bridge

Built in 1867 and considered the oldest bridge in the county, this 156-foot single-span structure pairs rustic character with remarkable 19thcentury engineering.

5. Benetka Road Covered Bridge

A quiet, wooded gem built around 1900. Its Town-lattice-with-arch design and riverside setting make it an ideal stop for visitors seeking a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience.

6. Netcher Road Covered Bridge

A modern classic completed in 1999, blending an inverted Haupt-truss with neo-Victorian design elements. It’s a striking example of how tradition and contemporary craftsmanship meet.

Ashtabula County is home to the largest collection of covered bridges in Ohio — 19 in total — creating a uniquely rich landscape of history, craftsmanship, and scenic beauty. These bridges showcase more than a century of American engineering, from mid-1800s timber-truss originals to modern interpretations that honor traditional design.

What sets the region apart is how these structures are woven into the natural environment: rolling farmland, river valleys, and forested backroads that make each bridge feel like a discovery. Together, they offer a living story of innovation, preservation, and the charm of rural Northeast Ohio — a heritage so beloved that it’s celebrated annually during the Covered Bridge Festival the second weekend in October.

tipS fOR ViSitinG COVERED BRiDGES

1. Use caution, many of the bridges only allow one-way traffic.

2. Drive with caution, some bridges are on gravel roads.

3. Be cautious if you park along the road to get out and look at the bridge. Be respectful of adjacent private property at the bridges.

Fall colors typically peak in Ashtabula County around mid-October, creating a beautiful backdrop for the covered bridges.

Smok e h ouse2009 BBQ Since Briqu ettes

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
– Aurthur C. Clarke

agic is probably exactly what the first human thought it was when they laid their lips on the profound flavors created when meat and fat combine with woodsmoke and flame. Thousands of years after this first taste of sublime smokiness, when our tastebuds are greeted with the sweet and savory, salty and acidic, earthy umami explosion of meat smoked over fire, we still exclaim, “Oh, this is MAGIC!” There is something primitive about it. Something that moves the soul to the deepest depths of its being when the smell hits our olfactory. Barbeque is magic!

It isn’t just the smell and the taste that makes barbeque magical. The people who gather to enjoy the smoky delectability of the food also inadvertently create an unparalleled sense of fellowship. Sharing food has always been a sacred act among people, whether they are friends, family, rivals, or even enemies. However, BBQ is such a powerful form of this act of dining fellowship that it isn’t just a verb (to barbeque), it also serves as a noun that describes a gathering or an event. Traditionally, social caste is shed, hatchets are buried, and everyone becomes family at a barbeque. That’s why Barbeque is Community!

Since 2009, Briquettes Smokehouse has been doing magic. Built on the dream of a pair of local chefs with little cash but a ton of heart, the reality of a top-tier traditional barbeque restaurant in Ashtabula was born. The vision was simple. They wanted to create a style of barbeque that was regionally unique and utilized the spirit of Northeast Ohio to tell a story that could not be duplicated in southern regions. They chose to focus on two things: locally harvested cherry wood for smoke and locally produced maple syrup for their signature “Maple Mustard” barbeque sauce. They also longed for a way to bring the finer tastes of hand-crafted beers (and eventually spirits) to the scene.

Fifteen years later, that dream has not only been realized but has grown to become the regionally famous, nationally recognized rock star that it is today. From humble beginnings, they now boast riverside patio dining with the best view of the historic “Bascule Lift Bridge” in Ashtabula Harbor, a historic three-story brick-walled interior, a beautifully made bar (constructed from local cherry and hard maple,) and a team that is knowledgeable and experienced. According to partner Shane Styzej, “Some of our team members have been with the business for over a decade.”

“Don’t worry if the flavors stir you to tears; it’s okay to cry,” says founder Nate Rockwell. “Sometimes we get so busy in this modern day that we forget to appreciate the small things. We invite you to take an evening or afternoon, put down your electronic devices, sit across the table from people you love, look them in the eyes, and say, ‘I love you, and this smoked meat is my way of showing it.’”

Welcome to Conneaut! The largest beach in Ashtabula County awaits you at Conneaut Township Park, which is home to a retromodern lighthouse. It is one of the few places in the country where vehicles can drive onto the beach, which is also a popular spot for kite surfing, bird-watching, and paddleboarding. Nearby, the Conneaut Marina has 300 slips for easy boating access.

Beach glass enthusiasts can often be found searching for the hidden gems in the sand at dawn and dusk. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch or pick up a snack while you're there.

Conneaut Creek is considered one of the premier locations in the world for steelhead fishing. Bring your rod and head to the river, or charter a boat for some of the best walleye and perch fishing you’ve ever experienced. There are kayak and supply rentals available in the area.

Take a trip along the back roads and explore the countryside of Conneaut while visiting four covered bridges: State Road, Creek Road, Middle Road, and Root Road.

The Conneaut Arts Center offers classes, art shows, and events year-round. Be sure to check out the "Lake Erie Monster Festival" in August, which celebrates the lore of what lurks in Lake Erie through art, games, music, food, and more.

Soar Search Watch

The area off the coast of Ashtabula County is part of the central basin of Lake Erie, and is particularly good for walleye fishing due to its deeper waters and temperatures. Walleye must be 15" or longer to keep, with a maximum of 6 fish per person, per day.

Check out the annual Wine and Walleye Festival in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor the last weekend in July to kick off the fishing season.

FOR TREASURE

When visiting the Great Lakes, beachcombers are often pleasantly surprised to find a sparkle among the rocks and pebbles that line the shore. Over time, Mother Nature gives us a lesson in recycling and transforms discarded glass into coveted gems known as beach glass.

When searching for beach glass, locals advise turning away from the sun. This makes it easier to identify the shimmer. The gems are easiest to spot in the groups of small-medium pebbles. If you hunt along the shore where the stones are wet, the colors in the glass will stand out.

Many believe that the best time to spot beach glass is after a storm when the rocks have been churned up, or early in the morning after a night of waves pushing the pebbles around.

Each year, the local community pays homage to these gifts from the lake at the annual Beach Glass Festival. Local artisans sell jewelry and magnificent pieces of art made from their shoreline finds.

Stop by the Geneva-on-the-Lake Welcome Center from May - October to purchase beach glass art, ornaments, and other colorful souvenirs.
