LEAVENWORTH’S STORY is an inspiring one of a Washington town that reinvented itself due to the loss of its railway and timber industries in the 1920’s. By the 1960’s the town’s steady decline led to the decision to invest in tourism and remodel the town as a Bavarian Alpine Village.
Today, the old world architecturally designed buildings are home to an array of specialty shops and restaurants. We have a large variety of accommodations, and have an active year-round calendar of events including festivals, music and live theater.
The resemblance of the surrounding countryside to Germany’s Bavarian Alps that originally inspired the towns transormation, means we also have a diverse number of outdoor recreation activities to enjoy all four seasons.

By Car
Leavenworth is easily accessible from the west coast via US Highway 2, and the drive through the Cascades has been voted as one of the most scenic drives in the States. The highway is well maintained with frequent pull-outs and rest stops to soak in the scenery or grab a bite. In the winter, the roads are kept clear, though you will want to check the road reports at wsdot.com/traffic/ passes before heading out.

Pangborn Memorial Airport in East Wenatchee (Airport code EAT) is located 30 miles from Leavenworth.
Horizon Air provides six direct flights per day from Seattle to E. Wenatchee and three direct flights per day from E. Wenatchee to Seattle.

Sea-Tac International Airport (SEA) is located 130 miles from Leavenworth. As the largest international airport in the Pacific Northwest, Sea-Tac is easily accessed from anywhere in the world.

The
Historyof Leavenworth
Leavenworth was not always a Bavarian-style village.
Once known for its fertile land by Native American tribes like the Yakama, Chinook, and Wenatchi, the area saw settlers searching for gold, timber, and furs.
By 1890, Icicle Flats was established, and Leavenworth resembled a Wild West town as the logging industry thrived. However, when the railroad rerouted its tracks, the town faced decline and struggled for over thirty years.
In the early 1960s, town leaders decided to transform Leavenworth to attract visitors, drawing inspiration from Bavaria. They renovated downtown and created festivals like the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and the Christmas Lighting Festivals. This transformation proved highly successful, making Leavenworth a popular tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest, welcoming over two million visitors each year.

Nestled along the banks of the Wenatchee River just a few blocks from the downtown core is Waterfront Park. With wide trails, bike and pedestrian friendly foot paths, and small sandy beaches to cool off at the river, this birdwatcher’s heaven is a great place to spend the day!
Featuring our gazebo and Maibaum (Maipole), Front Street Park is the heartbeat of our downtown. Just a few steps away, find shops and live entertainment. Watch festivals and parades unfold right before your eyes on our beautiful lawns and under our shade trees. In the winter, bring your sled and your sense of adventure while you barrel down our sledding hill under the Christmas lights while shoppers stroll and savor.

LIONS CLUB PARK
Located just off Highway 2 between City Hall and the community pool, Lions Club Park offers a welcoming sanctuary of shady trees and soft green lawns, the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the mountain air.
From May 9 through October 10, the park comes alive each Saturday from 9:00am–1:00pm with the Cascade Community Markets, a vibrant celebration of local farmers, producers, artisans, and musicians. Stroll through booths filled with fresh produce, handcrafted goods, baked treats, and specialty foods, all while enjoying live music and the friendly, small-town atmosphere that makes Leavenworth so special.
Game on! Enchantment Park boasts two softball fields, a junior baseball field that doubles as a youth soccer field, our Bike Pump Park (paved), Skateboard Park, and a playground. The parking lot can fit a large number of vehicles on-site as well as up to 3 buses. Walking trails link directly to the city’s scenic Waterfront Park recreation area and Enchantment Bridge connects you to Blackbird Island.

Maifest
Welcome the beauty and renewal of spring at Maifest, one of Leavenworth’s most cherished and colorful traditions. In 2026, we proudly celebrate 55 years of Maifest, marking more than five decades of Bavarian heritage, community spirit, and joyful springtime celebration in the heart of Washington’s Cascade Mountains.
Since 1971, this beloved festival has brought locals and visitors together to embrace the vibrant traditions of Bavaria through music, dance, artistry, and authentic cultural festivities.
Throughout the month of May, downtown Leavenworth comes alive each weekend with a dynamic blend of Old-World customs and lively modern celebrations, including:

• Cascade Celtic Festival May 1-3 – Kick off the month with spirited Celtic music and dance, adding a lively international flair to our Alpine village celebration.

Founded in 1964 Leavenworth’s Autumn Leaf Festival celebrates the turning colors of the autumn leaves every year during the last full weekend of September. It is the village’s original festival and features a weekend of entertainment with a grand parade through the town.

Experience the ultimate Bavarian celebration at Oktoberfest in Leavenworth! Spanning three festive weekends in downtown Leavenworth, this lively event features three fully programmed venues, each offering an unforgettable mix of traditional beer gardens, energetic live music, lively dancing, and authentic German cuisine.

The Village of Lights (VOL) spans three months, from December through February, transforming our village into a breathtaking winter wonderland. With over half a million lights adorning the park, the town glows daily from Thanksgiving through February, creating a mesmerizing Bavarian-inspired holiday ambiance for visitors to enjoy all winter long!
From Black Friday to Christmas Eve we celebrate the season with festive entertainment, roasted chestnuts, holiday characters for your photo ops, strolling carolers, and our fully programmed Festhalle with kids’ activities, Santa photos and more!
Join us over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January for Leavenworth’s Winter Karneval as we honor a German tradition dating back to the thirteenth century, commonly referred to as ‘Fasching’. Fire dancers, fireworks over the village, pub crawls, and more mark January in the village.

LEAVENWORTH is home to a variety of organizations who celebrate the arts, and perform year-round at a variety of venues. Outdoor theater productions, galleries, art walks and educational experiences are all included in the Leavenworth arts and entertainment scene.
The Icicle Creek Center for the Arts is dedicated to bringing exceptional performances as well as educational experiences to the area. Their state-of-the-art facilities include a 230-capacity theater, a 100-capacity recital hall, and an outdoor stage for 700 people.
The Leavenworth Summer Theater (LST) hosts spectacular productions each year including classics like The Sound of Music and Anything Goes. Their productions take place at the Ski Hill Amphitheater and the Leavenworth Festhalle.

FROM SPRING THROUGH FALL, Leavenworth offers a wealth of recreational opportunities during its long, sunny days. Water-based activities abound, including fishing, rafting & kayaking, tubing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) , and swimming on the Wenatchee River, which is fed by nearby Icicle Creek. Nestled in the Cascades, Leavenworth’s breathtaking scenery and access to over 800 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking , and rock climbing attract many adventurers.
Leavenworth is recognized by the Audubon Society as one of Washington’s best birding hotspots, with year-round opportunities and an annual Bird Fest in May. Just minutes from town, you’ll find excellent granite climbing options, along with a growing cycling community for both road and mountain biking. Don’t forget to check our Visitor Center for trail maps and tips or consider a leisurely horseback riding adventure.
The area’s 800 miles of hiking trails for every season, include two miles of trails at Waterfront Park along the Wenatchee River. For more challenging treks, explore the trails in Icicle Canyon and the stunning landscapes of Lake Wenatchee and the Enchantment Lakes Wilderness Area.
Golfers can enjoy multiple championship courses set against the picturesque Cascade foothills, while zip-lining provides a thrilling perspective of the area. • Know where you’re hiking. Trail guidelines can vary. Know before you go, whether a permit to hike a trail is necessary or if you need a parking pass.
• Never venture out on a trail without telling someone where you are planning on hiking, when you plan to begin the hike, and when you expect to return.
• Trailheads can be busy, especially during the summer months. When possible, carpool or use public transit if available.
• Consider public transit or shuttle to cut down the stress of parking.
• Bring the proper gear for the hike. This includes navigation, headlamps, sun protection, first aid, insect repellent, proper clothing and footwear, extra food and water, and more.
• Check the weather before you start, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
• Be careful to pack out everything you bring in, and well, anything anyone else may have left behind that you run across during the hike.
ON TWO WHEELS
• Whether on the road or on the trail, always wear a helmet. Avoid open-toed shoes, and carry enough water for your whole ride.
• Those riding uphill always have the right of way.
• Riding a muddy trail can cause permanent damage to the trail.
• Take care to stay on designated trails and roads.
• When riding on the road, observe traffic laws and use hand signals.

WINTER Recreation
LEAVENWORTH is a charming mountain town with outdoor recreation at its heart. Just under two miles from town, the Leavenworth Ski Hill offers a variety of winter sports, including alpine and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and the West Coast’s only ski jumping hill, all operated by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club. Nearby Plain and Lake Wenatchee provide additional classic and skate skiing options and scenic snowshoeing trails. For more extensive skiing, Stevens Pass and Mission Ridge are within a short drive.
Nordic skiing in the area is exceptional. The Icicle River Trail spans 8 kilometers and features scenic views, while the Golf Course Trail offers rolling hills and wildlife spotting. For night skiing enthusiasts, the Ski Hill Trails include a 7-kilometer groomed course and 5 kilometers of lit trails. The Ski Hill Lodge is perfect for warming up after a day outside.
If you want to ski downtown, Waterfront Park offers a lovely 3-kilometer trek along the Wenatchee River. Further north, the Plain Valley Nordic Ski Trails and Lake Wenatchee SnoParks boast over 50 kilometers of groomed trails.
For downhill skiing and snowboarding, both Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass are excellent options just 32 miles away.
The Ski Hill also features a family-friendly atmosphere, with a thrilling 100-foot tubing hill. Sledding is available at Front Street Park and the Leavenworth Golf Course. Experience winter with a sleigh ride through scenic landscapes, or enjoy snowmobiling on approved trails, with elevations ranging from 2,500 to 7,000 feet and an average of 150 inches of snowfall. Snowshoeing trails suitable for all skill levels offer a chance to explore stunning forests and meadows, providing the perfect opportunity for tranquility and adventure.

Lake Wenatchee State Park
Lake Wenatchee State Park, located just 20 minutes from Leavenworth, spans 489 acres with over 12,000 feet of waterfront on the glacier-fed Lake Wenatchee and the Wenatchee River. The park offers stunning views and easy water access, along with activities such as camping, swimming, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding and hiking on forest trails. In winter,
you can enjoy snowshoeing and 50 kilometers of Nordic skiing. Keep in mind that weekends are busy, and parking may be limited.
