This autumn, the College of Optometrists will be leading a public awareness campaign to encourage parents and carers to make eye examinations part of their children’s regular healthcare routine before they start school.
L
aunching on World Sight Day (8 October), the longer-term aim of the initiative is to help identify vision and eye health problems early on – and support lifelong healthy vision.
To encourage eyecare professionals to get behind the campaign, the College has created a dedicated children’s eye health hub on its website, offering a wide range of paediatric eyecare online learning and CPD resources. The Association of British Dispensing Opticians, one of the organisations supporting the cross-sector campaign, has also created a CPD and resource hub on its website – including details of its Level 7 Diploma in Paediatric Eyecare. Paediatric eyecare remains a primary focus for the sector, in particular myopia management, with clinical trials ongoing for a range of different solutions. These include Essilor Stellest 2.0 lenses, for which significant six-month interim results from an ongoing clinical trial in China have just been announced, and SightGlass DOT lenses, which provide myopia control thorough contrast management. See next month’s issue for more on the latest Stellest 2.0 results, and turn to page 22 to learn more about the clinical evidence behind DOT lenses. BIB Ophthalmic Instruments features in this month’s Product Profile, showcasing some impressive diagnostic hardware from Huvitz, while new preferred supplier Etnia Eyewear Culture spectacularly fuses art and technology with eyewear in our October Style Spotlight. Finally, registration for this month’s Building for Success Conference will remain open until 16 October – so you’re still in time to book a place. For a final word on this year’s gathering of members, suppliers and world-class speakers, turn to Developing Thoughts on page 17.

Essilor Living Intelligence represents a new approach to lens design, utilising a dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) model so it adapts to changing visual behaviours over time. An up-to-date version of the Varilux XR Series, the lenses capture millions of regularly-updated data points from multiple sources – a 60 per cent increase in dataset volume. Behavioural AI analyses large-scale real-world data to model how people use their eyes in everyday situations. Embedded in XR-motion technology, it enables more accurate design and positioning of the near vision zone by better predicting natural eye movements. Predictive models are regularly updated to sustain and improve accuracy over time. Digital Twin technology creates a virtual 3D replica of real-life visual behaviour, reproducing how wearers naturally use their eyes across a wide range of everyday situations. Through simulations, it enables Essilor Living Intelligence to validate, refine and improve Varilux XR Series lenses before and alongside real-world validation. The lenses can be further refined through advanced personalisation options, delivered in practice. Cyril Guilloux, optical design director at EssilorLuxottica, said: “AI often relies on static design models, which can gradually lose relevance as visual behaviours evolve over time. With Essilor Living Intelligence, we move beyond this limitation and work with a dynamic AI model. It refreshes its predictive model to maintain long-term relevance and precision.” Behavioural AI approach to progressive lens design

CooperVision CooperVision’s new MyDay Energys contact lenses are now rolling out across the UK and Ireland. The lens features the company’s ComfortBoost technology to help eyes maintain focus with less effort during everyday visual tasks, while its Aquaform Technology retains water within the lens material, providing natural wettability and supporting all-day comfort. “Comfort remains one of the most important drivers of contact lens satisfaction, and expectations continue to evolve as patients spend more time engaging with screens at work, at home and on the move,” said Lucy Davies, CooperVision director of marketing and professional affairs for the UK and Ireland. “MyDay Energys builds on the trusted performance of the MyDay family and introduces a new approach to comfort that considers both lens material and visual demands. We’re excited to bring this latest innovation to eyecare professionals across the United Kingdom and Ireland.”

Eyespace Eyespace unveiled an unprecedented number of optical releases, a new sunglass collection and a fresh identity for its Arhlo brand at Silmo Paris last month – all supported by a campaign focused on the irreverent spirit of Britain. The campaign traverses ‘tradition’ on one side – with tartan, herringbone and Harris Tweed tailoring codes – with ‘street’ on the other, evoking the noise of Camden, the energy of Glastonbury and the rebel spirit of 90s Britpop. Jayne Abel, CEO and co-founder of Eyespace, said: “The new collection takes its influence from the music, fashion and culture that has shaped British identity, creating eyewear with individuality at its core. This evolution has given us the opportunity to define what Arhlo stands for. We have created a visual identity that respects British heritage whilst speaking with the voice of today, building a distinctive brand world that gives the collection real relevance.”

The new 12-piece sunwear range is available in 18 fashion tints, each taking its name from a different stage or field of Glastonbury: Pyramid, Avalon, Left Field and Worthy. Meanwhile, 12 new optical styles take theirs from London’s city map: Vyner, Tredegar Square, Mile End and Shoreditch. Bio-based acetate and recycled
stainless steel feature throughout. Optical styles carry biodegradable demo lenses, while the sunwear uses ISCC-certified Tritan Renew UV400 lenses. Cloths and pouches are produced from rPET, with frames supplied in biodegradable bags. A full point-of-sale kit for independent practices is available.
Coloured contact lenses added to portfolio
Positive Impact Positive Impact (PI) has added coloured contact lenses to its portfolio in the form of premium Italian brand, Desio. With an international reputation for creating beautifully natural eye colour enhancement, the Desio collection includes more than 20 contemporary shades in daily disposable and monthly replacement formats, with prescription and plano options available. PI sales and operations director, Maxine Green, commented: “We believe coloured contact lenses deserve the same professional care as any other contact lens, giving patients confidence that they have been properly fitted and advised. It is also a point of differentiation for independent practices, as well as an additional sales opportunity for both contact lens and non-contact lens wearers alike.” Trial sets, professional education, merchandising materials and marketing support are available.

Technology award for DOT lenses
SightGlass Vision’s DOT spectacle lenses for myopia control have won a Gold Stevie Award for Technology Breakthrough of the Year. Presented in the Healthcare Technology category at the 2026 Stevie Awards for Technology Excellence, the award recognises the lenses’ novel contrast management approach to slowing myopia progression in children and was praised by judges as a “standout healthcare technology innovation”. SightGlass Vision’s winning entry, ‘DOT spectacle lenses offer a groundbreaking new approach to protecting children’s eyesight’, highlighted the company’s landmark clinical research, rapid adoption of the lens, and continued investment in educating eyecare professionals on the power of contrast management for myopia control. Among the achievements cited: new two-year data showing that DOT spectacle lenses saved more than 1.00D of myopia progression on average after two years in Chinese children aged six to 10 years. “Myopia is one of the biggest public health issues facing children today, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see DOT lenses recognised for the impact they’re making,” said Andrew Sedgwick, CEO of SightGlass Vision. “This recognition belongs to the eyecare professionals and families who trust DOT lenses, and it reaffirms why this work is so crucial: we’re slowing myopia progression in children now, to protect their eye health today and for years to come.” More than two million children worldwide have now worn DOT spectacle lenses. News Go Eyewear Hickmann Eyewear, by the Go Eyewear Group, presented its autumn/winter 2026/27 collection at Silmo Paris last month. The assortment moves from retro-inspired oversized acetate sunglasses to minimalist metal optical frames, creating a coherent offer for women who see eyewear as an essential part of their personal style rather than a finishing touch. Rich tortoiseshell textures, winter gradients, deep tones and classic black form the seasonal palette – while sculptural fronts, geometric profiles, jewellery-inspired temples and discreet logo integrations give each model a distinctive point of difference. The collection’s key styles include HI9323, a bold oversized aviator silhouette with a double-bridge acetate front, gradient lenses and a subtle metallic H-logo hinge accent. HI3274 offers a lightweight rimless interpretation of the cat-eye, with open lenses and ultra-slender metal detailing. In optical, HI6422 presents a soft-square oversized acetate shape with multi-textured colour-block temples, while HI6453 (shown) pairs a rounded, vintage-inspired front with dual-layer acetate temples and an engraved metal inlay logo.

EssilorLuxottica New Crizal Natural Look anti-reflective (AR) coating uses EssilorLuxottica’s Advanced Aesthetics Technology to deliver a more discreet AR effect. The coating is said to maintain colour neutrality and minimal reflection intensity across all viewing angles. Hélène Maury, light management technical leader at EssilorLuxottica, explained: “…studies have shown that lens reflections are among the top four most frustrating issues for wearers. By making reflections barely perceptible, Essilor establishes a new aesthetic standard where transparency and durability converge.”
The technology was more than two years in development, with Essilor’s R&D team working to better understand residual reflection colour of AR coatings. It combines three essential criteria for transparency: low light intensity, low colour intensity, and high angular colour stability. Crizal Natural Look also provides a premium shield of protection with three times higher scratch resistance than the Crizal entry range. It preserves the full durability, resistance and easy-clean performance expected from every Crizal lens – offering resistance to scratches, smudges, dust, water and UV.

News Into Optics/Eyecare Education A pilot for a new Youth Pathway Programme for Optics is in development – and independent eyecare practitioners are being asked for their input. The programme aims to bring together youth and employment organisations, optical employers, educators and the wider profession to create a supported route from initial careers awareness through to workplace experience, employment, apprenticeships and longer-term progression. Targeting young people not in education, employment or training – known as NEETs – the initiative will explore whether a different model can help prepare and support young people to take that first step into work, while putting more infrastructure to support smaller employers. The initiative is being co-developed by Gemma Drake, founder of Into Optics and an early careers and workforce specialist, and Stuart Wellings, dispensing optician and founder and CEO of Eyecare Education, a CPD provider working across the optical sector. They are developing the pilot across Birmingham and West Yorkshire ahead of
delivery through a separate, not-for-profit independent Community Interest Company. Gemma said: “Behind the NEET figures are young people who need someone to open that first door. At the same time, many smaller employers are under enormous pressure and don’t necessarily have the resources or infrastructure to do this alone. The opportunity is to bring those two needs together. If we can put the right preparation and support around the young person, while reducing some of the time, cost and risk for the employer, we can potentially unlock opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t exist.
Identifying alternative routes into optics
“Independent practices are local businesses, employing local people and serving local communities. Helping them develop future talent has the potential to create local routes into work – while strengthening the workforce those communities will depend on in the future,” added Gemma.
place around potential funding and sector support. Feedback is now being invited from independent optical practices across the UK to understand the barriers they face in engaging future talent, the opportunities they could potentially provide, and the support that would make participation realistic.
Work to develop the pilot is already underway, with employers, education organisations and the wider profession being engaged. Discussions are also taking

AN INDEPENDENT VIEW Smart eyewear: the case for clear guidance The development and sale of smart eyewear is expanding exponentially and presents some real opportunities for optical practices, but potentially some risks as well. There is no questioning the huge benefits that AI-enabled smart eyewear can bring, particularly to those who are blind or visually impaired. And, of course, the benefits do not end there with a growing list of applications that will bring value to consumers. However, there is an increasing evidence base of abuse of the technology by those so inclined, which the suppliers are finding it difficult to address. The ability to use smart eyewear to video and record undetected has been enabled by online sites giving advice on how to disable the light on the eyewear that signals recording is
in progress. Indeed, with some products it can be almost impossible to recognise any difference between conventional eyewear and smart eyewear. Unfortunately, where there is the potential for huge profits for suppliers, regulation and control can take a back seat – that is until change becomes inevitable (witness the controversy that surrounds social media content being served to children). For practitioners, this presents a quandary. The expansion of smart eyewear is inevitable, and the independent sector is, as usual, at the forefront of adopting this technology. But how does a practitioner know that a patient will not use smart eyewear in a criminal manner? And would there be any comeback on the practitioner if this happened.
to the regulator, the General Optical Council (GOC), to provide guidance to its registrants. Whilst recognising this is not easy, it is not reasonable to expect that practitioners should work in a vacuum when it comes to guidance, and accept responsibility, and potentially liability, for dispensing smart eyewear. It is not clear if this subject will be included in the GOC’s review of its standards of practice, which is currently the subject of consultation, but the AIO will be lobbying that it is.

The twoday conference will cover a wide range of diverse topics pertinent to everyday practice – including dry eye management, employment law, wearable tech, mentoring, and supporting patients with dementia – so there really is something for everyone. Both days will begin with a choice of CPD workshops, full details of which are available on the conference website at www.negconference.co.uk. Each delegate will be able to choose two workshops from a selection of four each day, which means a total of four across the two days. Add to this the final CPD lecture on the Monday afternoon, and each delegate can leave with 13 CPD points. For the first time this year, we have two keynote speakers, one for each day. We are delighted that Ella Al-Shamahi will join us on the Sunday, and Sir Clive Woodward OBE on the Monday. Ella and Sir Clive will bring a fresh take on ‘working together’ – sharing their unique perspectives from outside the optical industry. The aim of our keynote sessions is not only to be entertaining, but to be thoughtprovoking and to give delegates ideas and tools to take back to their businesses – to help them grow and become more successful. UNMISSIBLE EVENTS The Sunday afternoon session will round off with our Optinet showcase, which will see the official launch of Optinet Nova Elite. Nova Elite is a brand new module, which uses high-level computer technology to take your practice management system (PMS) to a whole new level. We believe it will make Optinet Nova one of the most
Two days of CPD, networking and exhibiting
advanced optical PMSs in the world. So, whether you’re an Optinet user or not, you won’t want to miss this exciting presentation. After the Optinet showcase, there will be an opportunity for delegates to settle into the hotel and freshen up before our drinks reception, kindly sponsored by Seiko Optical UK, and then this year’s gala dinner. We are always very proud of the conference gala dinners. They are a great opportunity to meet with like-minded people and relax with great food, drink and entertainment. This year, Jo Caulfield will be joining us. Jo is a stand-up comedian, host and comedy writer with a formidable track record across British television and radio, including regular appearances on Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and her own BBC Radio 4 series – as well as winning the 2025 Takeover Radio Joke Award at the Edinburgh Fringe. SUPPORTING OUR MEMBERS Running alongside all conference activities
will be the exhibition of NEG preferred suppliers. Unlike in previous years where the exhibition has been for one day only, this year you will be able to catch up with our preferred suppliers on both days – giving you plenty of time to meet with new suppliers too. A number of suppliers have joined the Group since our last conference, some just in the last couple of months, so there will be plenty of new products and services to explore. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our attending suppliers, in particular Title Sponsors EssilorLuxottica and Bausch + Lomb, along with headline sponsors Citation, CooperVision, Stepper and the Eyewear Company. Without their support and investment in our membership, we could not run the conference without charging a considerable amount to attend. There is still time to register if you haven’t already done so – as we will accept registration up until 16 October. The next era of eyecare automation Huvitz HTR-1A and HBM-1 MD/IOL The landscape of modern optometry and ophthalmology is undergoing a profound transformation… The system translates this data into a highly visual 2D and 3D Zernike map, rendering spherical, cylinder, axis and irregular aberrations transparently. This level of detail provides an invaluable diagnostic baseline for specialised contact lens fitting as well as pre-operative refractive surgery screenings.
C
linics around the world are facing identical pressures: a surging patient demographic driven by an ageing global population, an unprecedented rise in global myopia, dry eye cases, and an acute need to maximise chair time efficiency without compromising diagnostic accuracy. Meeting these dual demands – operational velocity and clinical precision – requires looking beyond traditional, single-function instrumentation. As an industry leader in diagnostic hardware, Huvitz has systematically answered this call by engineering highly integrated, automated workflows. By merging complex modalities into singular physical footprints, their latest diagnostic instruments are actively rewriting clinical protocols. This article explores two flagship pillars of this technological evolution: the Huvitz HTR-1A four-in-one eye diagnostic system and the newly-launched Huvitz HBM-1 MD (myopia and dry eye) and IOL (intraocular lens) models. Together, these devices bridge the gap between preliminary primary care screening and premium, data-driven surgical planning. HUVITZ HTR-1A Streamlining the front-end clinic In a traditional clinical setting, a comprehensive pre-examination screening workflow is a logistically taxing game of musical chairs. A single patient must be guided from an autorefractor to a keratometer, then transferred to a non-contact tonometer, and occasionally moved yet again
The Huvitz HTR-1A
to an ultrasound or optical pachymeter for corneal thickness calibration. Each transition introduces physical bottlenecks, demands sanitation cycles, and increases the potential for transcription or alignment errors. The Huvitz HTR-1A elegantly solves this procedural friction. By integrating autorefraction, keratometry, non-contact tonometry and non-contact pachymetry into a single, compact diagnostic station, it establishes a unified front-end screening hub. Architectural innovation and full automation The engineering philosophy of the HTR-1A revolves around hands-free execution. The device is built upon a sophisticated 3D drive mechanism that enables full auto tracking and shooting. Once the patient rests their chin, the instrument automatically detects the pupil centre, aligns itself across the X, Y, and Z axes, and captures the complete data suite for both eyes without requiring manual adjustments. This level of automation significantly diminishes operator dependency, ensuring that a technician on their first day captures the exact same highly reproducible metrics as a seasoned clinician. Optical precision via wavefront analysis At its core, the refraction module leverages Huvitz’s proprietary wavefront analysis algorithm combined with a micro-lens array. Rather than simply evaluating standard lower-order aberrations (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism), the HTR-1A maps out high-order aberrations.
Patient-centric tonometry and calibrated IOP Patient comfort during intraocular pressure (IOP) screening has historically been poor, often inducing blink reflexes that skew results. The HTR-1A addresses this via smart puffing control, which dynamically adapts the intensity of the air puff according to the patient’s individual intraocular pressure. Furthermore, true clinical accuracy in glaucoma screening requires contextualising pressure against structural thickness. Utilising a precise specular reflection method, the HTR-1A calculates central corneal thickness (CCT). It automatically uses this pachymetry data to output a calibrated, corrected IOP calculation on the spot, reducing diagnostic ambiguity. Advanced anterior analysis Beyond standard screening, the Huvitz HTR-1A functions as an expansive analytical station for dry eye tracking and contact lens customisation. ■ Peripheral keratometry: Standard keratometers sample only the central apex of the cornea. The HTR-1A continuously measures the corneal curvature moving upward, downward and peripherally from the centre. This peripheral topography data is vital for mapping astigmatic shifts and executing stable rigid gas permeable or scleral contact lens designs. ■ Integrated digital meibography: Recognising the explosive rise of ocular surface disease, Huvitz incorporated an advanced meibography function driven by infrastructure-level image enhancement technology. Clinicians can clearly view and evaluate meibomian gland drop-out, turning a standard screening device into an immediate revenue-generating dry eye assessment tool. ■ Clinic interoperability: Data isolation is a primary operational bottleneck. The HTR-1A features comprehensive RS-232C, ethernet, and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. Vision Now October 2026 19

It seamlessly syncs metrics directly to external electronic medical record databases or pipes information straight to digital refraction systems like the Huvitz HDR-9000, creating an instantaneous, error-free data relay. HUVITZ HBM-1 MD AND IOL Redefining biometry and specialised care While the HTR-1A manages primary workflows, specialised clinical intervention requires a deeper look into the axial dimensions of the eye. The newly-introduced Huvitz HBM-1 MD (myopia/dry eye) version for optometry and the IOL (intraocular lens) version for ophthalmology, provides optical biometry, topography, dry eye analysis and represents Huvitz’s entry into specialised surgical mapping with longitudinal myopia as well as dry eye management. The HBM-1 MD/IOL functions as an advanced four-in-one device that executes 10 distinct clinical tests simultaneously. It captures a comprehensive suite of ocular analytics including axial length, in conjunction with myopia management forecasting, corneal topography, total meibomian index, tear break-up time, blink and meibography in a single glance, whilst the IOL model provides axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, CCT and IOL calculation.
The Huvitz HBM-1 MD version
Clinical parity with global benchmarks In specialised tertiary care and surgical centres, accuracy is non-negotiable. If an optical biometer cannot provide highly repeatable results, it cannot be safely deployed for intraocular lens calculations. In a rigorous clinical study verifying its realworld performance, the Huvitz HBM-1 MD optical biometer was pitted directly against the industry’s historical reference standard, the Zeiss IOLMaster 700. The results validated the unit’s underlying light interference engine,
Assessing dry eye with the Huvitz HBM-1 IOL version
demonstrating exceptional correlation and high statistical agreement across normal, mature cataractous and pseudophakic eyes alike. The HBM-1 MD delivers stable, providerindependent repeatability, securing its place as an uncompromised resource for surgical environments. Overcoming optical barriers One of the most historic flaws of traditional optical biometry is its vulnerability to posterior subcapsular or hyper-mature dense cataracts. When the lens matrix is entirely opacified, standard light interference signals scatter, resulting in measurement dropouts that force clinics to fall back on less precise ultrasound immersion methods. The HBM-1 MD/IOL counters this with a specialised dense cataract mode. This algorithm dynamically amplifies weak, scattered light reflection signals back from the retinal wall, successfully cutting through highly dense cataracts to yield accurate axial length data where standard instruments fail. Cataract optimisation and myopia trend analytics The utility of the HBM-1 MD is divided across two major clinical landscapes, rendering it a flexible investment for modern multi-specialty practices. Managing paediatric myopia has moved far beyond simple corrective lenses. Modern standard-of-care demands tracking axial length elongation over time, as axial length is the ultimate predictor of future retinal health risks. The HBM-1 MD features a dedicated built-in myopia management report software suite. This interface archives longitudinal patient data, tracks progressive changes against normalised growth curves, and generates clear, visual trend analysis sheets. These intuitive reports give practitioners the clear metrics required to evaluate treatment
A STRATEGIC SYNERGY When analysing the Huvitz HTR-1A and the Huvitz HBM-1 MD/IOL side-by-side, it becomes clear that these devices are not meant to compete; rather, they form a highly cohesive diagnostic ecosystem. Implementing this pairing creates an optimised workflow pipeline. Every incoming patient can be rapidly routed through the HTR-1A. Within less than a minute, technicians secure clean baseline parameters for refraction, high-order aberrations, IOP calibrated against corneal thickness, and an initial dry eye screening. This immediately filters the patient population. When a patient flags for cataract development, surgical consultation, asymmetric astigmatism, or progressive paediatric myopia, they seamlessly step over to the HBM-1 MD/IOL. Here, the practitioner activates deep biometry, runs premium IOL calculation matrices, or populates the longitudinal myopia trend analysis tracking engine plus provides a comprehensive dry eye assessment. By offloading mechanical tracking and raw data capture onto Huvitz’s automated internal hardware platforms, the clinic eliminates physical testing bottlenecks and human data-entry errors. Clinicians are liberated from manual, repetitive technical alignment steps, allowing them to redirect their finite energy toward patient interaction, treatment personalisation, and clinical decision-making. INVESTING IN AN AUTOMATED FUTURE The integration of diagnostic hardware is no longer a luxury reserved for high-volume corporate clinics; it has become an essential strategy for independent optometric practice sustainability. In an environment where clinical efficiency can never come at the expense of patient outcomes, tools must adapt. The Huvitz HTR-1A transforms preliminary patient screening into a rapid, multi-modal, and comfortable automated routine. Simultaneously, the Huvitz HBM1 MD/IOL elevates specialised medical decision-making and myopia tracking by combining clinical accuracy with sophisticated software modelling. Together, these instruments give eyecare professionals the technical foundation to face a demanding diagnostic landscape with absolute confidence, precision and clarity. A new approach to myopia control: introducing DOT spectacle lenses in the UK
Myopia is one of the fastest-growing challenges in eyecare, and prevalence in the UK continues to rise, with children developing myopia at younger ages than previous generations1.
U
ntil now, every spectacle lens designed to slow myopia has essentially worked in the same way, by using defocus. DOT spectacle lenses are a non-defocus spectacle solution, valuable for any practice engaged in myopia management to complete their portfolio. Pioneered by SightGlass Vision and powered by Diffusion Optics Technology, they are the first single vision lenses that provide myopia control through contrast management whilst preserving excellent visual acuity2,3. DOT lenses are now available to NEG members, and the clinical evidence behind them is substantial. Research shows that DOT lenses for myopia control saved more than 1.00D of progression on average after two years in children aged six to 10 years4*†‡ – meaningfully reducing long-term eye health risk5. For SightGlass Vision, bringing DOT lenses to NEG members is an opportunity to help broaden the scope of myopia management in practice. WHO IS SIGHTGLASS VISION? Founded in 2016, SightGlass Vision develops innovative, science-based treatments to address progressing childhood myopia, supported by novel and comprehensive research. The company now operates as a joint venture of CooperVision Inc and Essilor International to accelerate commercialisation opportunities, and expand the myopia management category worldwide. Within this structure, the SightGlass Vision team remains independent in driving the research and innovation behind DOT lenses. SightGlass Vision’s DOT spectacle lenses launched in 2021 and made their commercial debut in the UK in autumn 2025. They are also available in China, Canada, Israel and Spain. The company recently announced that two million children have now worn DOT lenses, reaching that milestone less than a year after surpassing one million wearers6§. The pace reflects rapid adoption as eyecare professionals (ECPs) seek effective ways to slow myopia progression in children. The UK is central to that work, serving as a hub for SightGlass Vision’s global operations. Its CEO, Andrew Sedgwick, and several members of the senior leadership

DOT lenses for myopia control saved more than 1.00D of progression on average in Chinese children aged six to 10 years4*† WHAT IS CONTRAST MANAGEMENT? Contrast management is based on research showing that the contrast levels of artificial versus natural environments may lead to very different levels of eye growth, laying the scientific foundation for DOT lenses7. It is
an approach built around how children now grow up: on tablets at school, playing video games, and scrolling through social media. Research suggests spending more time indoors, studying, reading and in modern, artificial environments may be linked to accelerated myopia progression in children8-12. DOT lenses address this directly. To mimic WHY EARLY INTERVENTION MATTERS Myopia is irreversible and typically progresses rapidly in younger children, so it's important to start treatment as soon as possible21. Children aged six to seven are at greater risk of rapid myopia progression22. There is no such thing as a safe level of myopia23. Every dioptre saved can reduce future eye health risk by up to 40 per cent5. It’s our duty to act early to minimise myopia progression and preserve eye health and vision.
PRODUCT PROFILE DOT LENSES IN PRACTICE ■ DOT lenses offer a clinically equivalent visual experience to standard single vision lenses2 ■ DOT lenses are easy to fit, without extra chair time, as they are prescribed like many other single vision spectacle lenses# ■ Clinical study results are reflected in real-world practice24,25 more natural contrast, the lenses’ unique design integrates thousands of elements that softly scatter light before it hits the retina13. LANDMARK CLINICAL EVIDENCE SightGlass Vision has built a robust body of clinical evidence supporting contrast management for myopia control, and the application of contrast management via its DOT spectacle lenses, across diverse patient populations. DOT lenses are the first myopia management spectacle lens shown to be effective in a clinical study on children as young as six years old14-16. The company recently released new twoyear data from its clinical trial conducted in China. Like the four-year North American study before it, the trial compared DOT lenses with conventional single vision lenses, this time in Chinese children across five clinical sites to evaluate their continued safety and efficacy. In addition to saving more than 1.00D of progression on average in children aged six to 104*†, DOT lenses slowed average myopia progression by 67 per cent (0.78D) and average axial length progression by 62 per cent (0.40mm) after two years of wear across the full study population of patients aged six to 13 versus the control group4*. Additional findings from the full study population showed that 59 per cent of DOT lens wearers had 0.50D or less myopia progression after two years, compared with 19 per cent of children in the control group4*. The differences were statistically significant (p<0.0001). Other research has further expanded the understanding of DOT lens performance and wearer experience. Studies have shown that DOT spectacle lenses help children to naturally move, respond and complete school-related tasks, with performance similar to standard single vision lenses2,17,18 ¶. WHAT PRACTITIONERS ARE SAYING “As myopia continues to become an increasingly important part of children’s eyecare, it is encouraging to see new approaches becoming available to UK eyecare professionals. Having a range of evidence-based options allows us to have more meaningful conversations with families, and consider what is most appropriate for each child. I look forward to seeing how DOT lenses, with their contrast management approach, can contribute to the evolving myopia management landscape in the UK,” Mohamed Ayyaz Kasmani, Feltham Eyecare Centre, UK “Most kids stop noticing them within days and simply wear them as their everyday glasses. In today’s crowded field of myopia treatments, that counts for a lot,” Teddy Chow, the Chow Eye Institute, Canada “We’ve seen a high success rate, especially in our younger patients, with many showing slowed progression and stable axial length over time. The lenses are easy to fit, low risk and families are genuinely happy with them, which makes a huge difference,” Kylvin Ho, CU Vision Optometrists, Canada

Etnia Eyewear Culture
A new perspective on design, art and innovation
E
The world of eyewear has evolved far beyond its original function. Today, frames are design objects, tools for personal expression and pieces that connect with disciplines such as art, fashion, architecture and technology…
yewear is part of our identity and the way we engage with the world. This perspective is at the heart of Etnia Eyewear Culture, a group that approaches optics from a contemporary and creative standpoint, where design, innovation, culture and craftsmanship come together to shape a new way of understanding eyewear. Etnia Eyewear Culture comprises five independent brands – Etnia Barcelona, Lool, Pellicer, Moi Aussi and the Readers – each with its own identity, creative language and distinctive offering within the eyewear universe. Although each brand develops its own vision, they all share the same ambition: to explore new possibilities within optics and understand eyewear as objects where design, functionality, innovation and personal expression co-exist. Within this context, this Style Spotlight focuses on Etnia Barcelona and Lool, two brands that represent different yet complementary approaches to eyewear design. On the one hand, Etnia Barcelona finds

its main form of expression in art, colour and culture. On the other, Lool explores the potential of technology, engineering and lightness. Two distinct languages that, together, reflect the breadth of Etnia Eyewear Culture’s vision and its approach to the future of eyewear.
ETNIA BARCELONA: EYEWEAR AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION With Barcelona as its origin and inspiration, Etnia Barcelona has built an identity deeply rooted in art, design and colour. The brand sees eyewear as much more than an accessory: it is an extension of personality and a way of expressing a particular way of seeing and understanding the world. This vision is once again present in the autumn/winter 2026 (AW26) collection, whose campaign was created in collaboration with renowned photographer and visual artist, Txema Yeste. His perspective transforms the collection into a deeply visual experience, where light, colour

and emotion come together to create a language of its own. Internationally recognised for his ability to turn photography into a sensory experience, Yeste brings an artistic perspective that goes beyond the traditional codes of a fashion campaign. Each composition is carefully constructed so that the image functions as a work of art in its own right, creating a dialogue between the frames, the space, the light and the colour. The AW26 collection is born from this same philosophy. Colour becomes one of its central protagonists, exploring new chromatic combinations, materials and shapes. The offering brings together designs for men, women and unisex styles, conceived to suit different personalities and forms of expression. Each frame thus becomes a tool for identity. A piece capable of reflecting the individuality, creativity and attitude of the person wearing it. In this context, eyewear moves beyond being purely functional to acquire an emotional and cultural dimension. The collaboration with Txema Yeste reinforces this understanding of the brand: a vision in which art is not an added element, but an essential part of Etnia Barcelona’s identity. LOOL: THE BEAUTY OF ENGINEERING Within Etnia Eyewear Culture, Lool represents another approach to eyewear design. Its language emerges from the combination of
Lool: where technology and simplicity find a natural balance
technology, engineering and simplicity, with the aim of creating lightweight, functional frames designed to last. For AW26, Lool continues to evolve this vision through timeless designs in which technology and simplicity find a natural balance. Each frame is developed using innovative materials and proprietary engineering systems, with the aim of offering a wearing experience defined by lightness, comfort and durability. The new season also introduces a more sophisticated colour palette, inspired by concepts such as balance and longevity. Warm brown tones, mineral greys and metallic finishes create a discreet and versatile aesthetic, while subtle accents inspired by nature and the digital world add
depth and character. At Lool, technology is not intended to attract attention, but to integrate naturally into the design. Engineering becomes an essential part of the aesthetic, making it possible to create lightweight, functional structures without compromising a contemporary identity. Among the AW26 highlights is the introduction of the clip-on, a solution that brings a new dimension of versatility to the collection. This system allows the frame to be transformed and adapted to different situations and needs, while maintaining the lightness and minimalist character that define Lool. Once again, functionality becomes part of the design itself. It is not about adding elements, but about finding new solutions that make eyewear more intuitive, versatile and suited to everyday life. TWO BRANDS, ONE CULTURE Etnia Barcelona and Lool draw on different creative languages, but share the same conviction: eyewear can be much more than a functional object. Two complementary perspectives that define the universe of Etnia Eyewear Culture: a culture of eyewear that sees eyewear as a meeting point between design, innovation, art and personal expression. Because looking is also a form of creating. And ultimately, eyewear not only shapes how we see the world, but also how we choose to be part of it.
