illegiardini celebra la stagione più fredda dell’anno con servizi e rubriche che la raccontano, dal punto di vista del design, dell’architettura e del verde. A partire da due progetti tra le vette alpine firmati monovolume architecture + design che, attraverso linguaggi e stili della contemporaneità, hanno rivisitato la tradizione del classico chalet. Spazio anche al design, con un’insolita selezione di arredamento outdoor pensato per un utilizzo ad alta quota, anche in questo periodo dell’anno, e alle piante, con una Collezione del mese dedicata alle fioriture invernali. Oltre a questo, in edicola troverete il nostro consueto numero speciale dedicato a Grandi Giardini Italiani, il network dei più importanti giardini aperti al pubblico, storici e contemporanei, che vi regalerà un viaggio in un patrimonio di arte e cultura botanica unico al mondo, attraverso le immagini dei migliori fotografi. Winter charm. Villegiardini celebrates the coldest season of the year with features and columns recounting it from the point of view of design, architecture and green. Starting with two projects among the Alpine peaks signed by monovolume architecture + design that, through contemporary languages and styles, have revisited the tradition of the classic chalet. Space is also given to design, with an unusual selection of outdoor furniture designed for use at high altitudes, even at this time of year, and to plants, with a ‘Collezione del mese’ dedicated to winter blooms. In addition to this, on newsstands you will find our usual special issue dedicated to Grandi Giardini Italiani, the network of the most important gardens open to the public, both historical and contemporary, which will take you on a journey into a unique heritage of botanical art and culture, through the images of the best photographers. Hokusai, la poesia del quotidiano
K
atsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), il più importante pittore e incisore del periodo Edo (1603-1868), nacque in un periodo segnato dall’effervescenza creativa della corrente artistica dell’ukiyo-e, letteralmente “immagini del mondo fluttuante”. Attraverso lo strumento espressivo della stampa xilografica, gli artisti dell’epoca si proponevano di rappresentare una realtà effimera che non afferrava mai la sostanza, ma invitava a cogliere la bellezza fugace che si cela nei momenti di piacere: nell’estasi di un fenomeno naturale che rapisce l’anima o nel dolce abbandono al sorso di sake. Hokusai viene spesso e quasi unicamente associato a uno dei suoi capolavori più noti, La Grande Onda presso la costa di Kanagawa. Nonostante l’indiscutibile valore e la fama universale di quest’opera, sarebbe ingiusto e riduttivo circoscrivere a essa la vasta e poliedrica esperienza artistica del maestro. La mostra, Hokusai, in programma presso il Palazzo Blu di Pisa fino al 23 febbraio 2025, si è proposta di offrire una visione più ampia e sfaccettata dell’universo creativo dell’artista, con opere di vario genere provenienti dal Museo d’Arte Orientale Edoardo Chiossone di Genova e dal Museo d’Arte Orientale di Venezia. Lo spazio espositivo si apre con la sua produzione più celebre e prolifica incentrata sulle stampe di vedute di luoghi noti o meisho con rappresentazioni di templi, ponti, cascate e paesaggi. alle esigenze di ciascuno, accoglie un camino come da tradizione alpina. Ogni angolo è immaginato per essere uno spazio in cui rilassarsi e ammirare il paesaggio circostante. Come l’area dedicata al benessere, vero cuore della casa, posta al piano inferiore e composta da una grande vasca centrale dalla forma poligonale. È uno spazio raffinato, fulcro delle attività di svago per tutta la famiglia, in cui il colore diventa protagonista. Il nero prende il sopravvento occupando intere superfici e alternando un gioco cromatico su piani diversi, reso più sofisticato da uno studio illuminotecnico con luci a led. Il rivestimento delle pareti e del soffitto si pone a contrasto del pavimento chiaro e del blu intenso dell’acqua, un legame con l’esterno volutamente accentuato dagli architetti da ampie vetrate continue che fanno entrare la natura negli spazi interni. l The spectacle of the mountains. A chalet of essential lines, nestled among the peaks of the Austrian Alps, offers an uninterrupted connection with the landscapethankstoitsexpansiveglasssurfaces.Nature teaches the art of slowing down, of savouring the shifting light and colours, and of rediscovering energy through an authentic and precious connection with the landscape. The soft, sinuous forms and intense hues transform the scenery with every season, fostering a constant dialogue with the living spaces. Retreating to Austria’s soaring peaks—this predominantly Alpine country is composed of more than two-thirds mountain ranges—feels akin to living in paradise. Architects Sergio Aguado Hernández, Astrid Hasler, and Diego Preghenella of the design firm monovolume architecture + design interpreted this symbiotic connection by refining both the aesthetics and functionality of a three-storey chalet, defined by its linear, modern structure. Central to the project is the use of natural and contemporary materials, the creation of a comfortable spa area, and the incorporation of expansive glass surfaces on the western and southern façades that frame the beauty of the mountains. These openings flood the domestic environment with vibrant, profound light, enhancing the visual continuity between indoors and outdoors. Depending on perspective and the angle of the sun’s rays, the interior spaces take on new personalities, becoming the oasis of well-being so desired by the owners, who sought a holiday refuge far from the frenetic pace of the city. A key design element lies in the interplay of materials: the warm presence of oak wood and natural stone,clear references to a typically Alpine atmosphere, contrasts with the rigidity of black metal, which introduces a distinct minimal aesthetic while accentuating the geometry of the spaces. The ceiling beams in the living area, restored from the original structure, were treated with a darker stain, allowing them to stand out against the pale wooden ceiling planks and parquet flooring. The considerable ceiling height lends a sense of airiness and amplifies the sensation of openness to the landscape. Indeed, the project prioritises a seamless flow between spaces, minimising internal partitions. This fluid vision enhances conviviality and ensures a uniform stylistic language throughout the home. Spanning an impressive 950 square metres, the chalet is designed to accommodate multiple families. On the top floor, there are four generous en-suite bedrooms with a private lounge, a large terrace ideal for summer use, and a living area complete with a dining room and kitchen centred around an island. The living room, designed with modular furnishings adaptable to individual needs, features a traditional Alpine fireplace. Every corner is conceived as a space for relaxation and contemplation of the surrounding landscape. This is particularly true of the wellness area—the heart of the home—located on the lower floor and centred . It centres around a large, polygonal pool and serves as a refined hub for leisure activities. Here, colour takes on a starring role. Black dominates the surfaces, alternating chromatic plays across different planes, further refined by a sophisticated lighting design featuring LED lights. The contrast between the dark walls and ceilings and the pale flooring is striking, while the water’s intense blue creates a deliberate link to the outdoors. This connection is further emphasised by continuous glass panels, which seamlessly draw nature into the interior spaces. ■ 39

Two wooden architectures reinterpret the traditional structure of typical rural buildings in the mountains of Trentino Alto Adige in an innovative way. The scenery is exceptional: the majestic peaks of the Dolomites, the dense forests of the Latemar in the upper Val d’Ega and the emerald-green waters of Lake Carezza, about 20 km south-east of Bolzano. The beauty of the South Tyrolean landscape blends with the modern sustainable architecture designed by the studio monovolume architecture + design, which finds inspiration in the construction of the alpine farmsteads, service structures once used to house cattle mainly for milk production. Consisting of a stable on the ground floor and the hayloft on the upper level, they were built mainly of wood or by adding stone and lime. One of the recognisable features on the outside was a slightly spaced slatted cladding to allow the right amount of air to pass through. This construction element was also replicated by monovolume architecture + design in the façade of Casa Carezza. ‘The houses,’ explain the architects, ‘stand on a plot of land with a high building density. In order to preserve the privacy of each inhabitant, the north side of the building, which faces the Catinaccio, is enclosed with large terraces and marked by a vertical rhythm of wooden slats, while the south side, the glazed façade, opens up the view framing the panorama overlooking the Latemar group’. There are two residences and they exploit the Raumplan principle, that it means to design according to staggered planes, allowing a dynamic distribution of the rooms and a continuous connection with the outside through large panoramic windows. The dwellings offer the same distribution: on the ground floor the entrance, kitchen and living room have been imagined, while on the first floor there are the bedrooms with large windows to admire the Dolomites. All the materials were selected from local ones: from the dolomite stone of the exteriors to the white fir and larch for the load-bearing structure and the interior cladding, derived from nearby logging operations. A design sensitivity that respects the environment, enhances the soul of the place and celebrates the beauty of the Alpine landscape. ■

contemporaneità e punti di interesse al giardino, come il maestoso esemplare arboreo di Erythrina crista-galli, che infiamma l’estate con la sua fioritura rosso scarlatto. Dal secondo ingresso, a una quota più elevata, si entra direttamente nel giardino all’italiana superato il quale si accede al lungo viale di circa ottanta metri definito da due filari di aranci arricchiti da bordure di Agapanthus africanus, Spiraea x vanhouttei, Abelia grandiflora, Leonotis leonurus e anemoni giapponesi. In fondo al viale si trovano il tempietto circolare in muratura e un laghetto artificiale di forma irregolare arricchito da varietà di Nymphaea alba. Sul lato sinistro del tempietto si sviluppa un piccolo bosco con lecci secolari, aceri, carpini, lauri, ligustri e cedri. Qui le lunghe infiorescenze a pannocchia di Hydrangea quercifolia illuminano di bianco questa zona ombrosa e sempreverde. Riparata dallo sguardo da un fondale topiario di Laurus nobilis e Quercus ilex, la terrazza superiore accoglie un viale di antichi melograni e una vasca settecentesca in marmo bianco con zampilliera. Tra le architetture una grande serra, concepita come winter garden, ospita esemplari di Phoenix roebelenii, Howea forsteriana, Philodendron selloum, collocati in Caisses de Versailles, insieme a felci come Platycerium biifurcatum e Asplenium nidus. L’irrigazione originale del giardino era assicurata da un sistema costituito da canalini in tufo a cielo aperto che seguono il declivio naturale del terreno e portavano acqua fino al boschetto e l’aranceto. Tali canali si rifornivano da una cisterna oggi ancora esistente ubicata nella zona più alta della proprietà ed era alimentata da una 86
