Over the decades I have spent in the automotive industry, I’ve watched our hobby grow from a small circle of enthusiasts into a massive cultural force. As we pull into April, we find ourselves in a unique position on the Island. We have reached a "saturation of choice." where we no longer struggle to find things to do but instead must decide which events truly captivate us.
However, as much as we are a "car club," we are also a “social club” built on the varied interests of our members. This year, I want to explore new opportunities for us to share time together as a community of creators and learners.
Our food centered events have always been fantastic, and the recent addition of the book club has shown there is an appetite for sharing intellectual interests.
This season, I am hoping we can create a "Chef’s Night": a group drive to source local, delicious ingredients, followed by a hands-on lesson on how to prepare them, and concluding with the simple pleasure of eating the products of our collective effort. We have immense talent within our membership, and I want to see us leverage that to create these types of immersive experiences.
Parallel to this, I believe we have inadvertently lost touch with the satisfaction that comes from working on our own machines. Over the last 20 years, we’ve been convinced that a modern Porsche is so complex that only a professional should ever touch them.
In doing so, I fear we’ve given up the joy found in the "simple" things like the satisfaction of a thorough hand -wash, the pride of a basic oil change, or the camaraderie of a DIY technical session. This is exactly why we launched the online Technical Exchange. I want us to reclaim that connection to our cars. Whether it's with a wrench or a wash mitt, there is a deep, tactile satisfaction to be found maintaining the vehicles we love.
As we look at the full 2026 calendar, let’s look for the events that offer more than just a destination. Let’s look for the events that allow us to learn more about each other.
I look forward to seeing you out there this spring.

Our 30th Anniversary Logo
Paul Rossmo, in his monthly President’s update paid tribute to the 30th Anniversary logo competition participants. He said:” I want to thank all our members who took the time to submit their designs for our 30th Anniversary logo. The winning logo will be featured on select merchandise, in our magazine and in all the materials relating to our 30th year as a region.
“The level of talent and creativity within this group is truly impressive, and seeing the diverse ways our club’s identity was interpreted was a highlight for the Board.
“While we could ultimately select only one design, the decision was incredibly difficult due to the high calibre of every entry.
“Thank you to everyone who shared their vision.
“The winning design was submitted by Don Gosse.”
- Highlighting some of our hardworking Executive
Steve Fairbrother, Database IT Chair
Steve is a quiet force of nature behind the scenes of VIRPCA. He joined VIRPCA right away upon purchasing his first Porsche in March 2008. He has owned four Porsches in total, as follows:
Cayenne S Silver; Macan S Black; Macan S White; and his current Porsche, Macan S Carmine red (factory ordered)
Steve and Jenny have been married for 42 years and have two married sons and three grandchildren.
Steve, who is our Database IT Chair says: “I have always worked with computers. I joined Lloyds Bank in 1977 as a trainee programmer and left them in 1994 as Technical Consultant after mainly working on IT security and cryptography.”
“We emigrated with our sons to Canada in 1994 (the best thing we ever did!). I worked freelance for Fujitsu Consulting, BC Government, & Land Titles - as Database Admin, Project Manager until I retired in 2015.”
“I have always volunteered - for our boys’ school PAC in UK, for Victoria Horticultural Society here producing their newsletter, as VIR Editor for seven years creating Porscher almost monthly and for CFAX Santas Anonymous currently where I am their technical lead. At VIR I handle MSR event webpages, and our Facebook group as co-moderator (with Tim Evans backing me up).”
Steve is humble about his achievements. The Porscher won three National Newsletter awards when he produced it, in first place in 2019 and 2021, and in 2022, in second place. In December 2025, the VIR members involved with Steve and CFAX Santas Anonymous raised over $12,000.00.
Steve is also our manager for Motorsport Registration (MSR) and has been the wise wisdom assisting members.
Steve’s plans for the future? “We hope to be attending more VIR events than we have over the last few years - due to moving homes, and babysitting the grandchildren We would also like to get back to taking some cruises too.”

The Next Hit Car show
Written by Logan Hale
Editor’s Note: VIR Member Matthew Sokyrka is part of a group on the Island called “That Thing We Did”. They are producing “The Next Hit Car Show”. I met up with the Producer/Director, Logan Hale at Cars and Coffee, at Café 356, shortly before filming of the show. Logan agreed to write an article for us. He has also shared photos, which are frames from the show itself. As always, fun things coming from our very talented and skilled members, and of course VIRPCA’s favourite Café the one and only Café 356. Over to Logan…”
Could The Next Hit Car Show come out of Vancouver Island? To finish off the Summer, Café 356 in French Creek was host to an independent TV production. The island-based group was shooting a pilot episode for a television series they are hoping to get funded (if you have an extra few million dollars laying around, please contact them). The “car show” features three presenters doing ridiculous road trips, hilarious builds, and exciting automotive commentary, packaged into a familiar live studio format. As you may have guessed, the local boys are taking in-

spiration from the extremely popular British motoring show, “Top Gear”. Except, of course, substituting the tea and crumpets for chainsaws and the occasional plaid jacket.
A live studio audience of around 30 people filled into the café at 6:00pm on a Sunday night. Only slightly past the scheduled start time - cameras began to roll.
Mixed in with the various studio segments, the audience got an exclusive look at the boys’ newest adventure, as well as other, smaller pieces of film, all to be featured in the end product. This adventure sees the presenters travelling across British Columbia in their personal vehicles, to determine which is best. Up for debate is a 1992 Mercedes 190E, a 1978 Honda CB550, and of course, a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera. They compete in a drag race, face off in a parking lot showdown, and carve up some awesome, scenic mountain drives. Can you guess which one broke down first? You will have to have to watch the full show to find out - coming this Summer!
Presenters (left to right) Josh Beausoleil, Matthew Sokyrka, and Duncan Gallop introduce a video segment for the audience.
Wildest dreams could not conjure up a better studio space for a car show. Owner and operator of Porsche-themed Café, Café 356, Marc Klijnsmit is an Area Director for the Vancouver Island Region of the Porsche Club of America. At the café, Marc is a man of the people: welcoming guests with a glowing smile and buzzing around the shop, bringing light and positivity to everyone’s day. Marc is also an avid supporter of local artists, and hosts various events throughout the year.
Arguments continue from the presenters as they try to decide where to rank various cars along the continuum of cool.
Matthew gets the crowd involved as they try to guess how expensive a fly wheel bolt for his Porsche might be.
Local Actress Megan Nahanee delivers a wonderful performance as a popular celebrity.
Duncan
up the audience for the next video segment.
Matthew’s sadness continues as his wallet gets even lighter.
Duncan and Josh have a laugh (at their own expense).
queues
The show also featured a celebrity guest. Despite many emails and phone calls, Ryan Reynolds neglected to answer in a timely manner. Thankfully, they were able to secure the next best thing. Local actress Megan Nahanee played the role of a very famous celebrity.
As for the production, entitled “That Thing We Did”, this isn’t their first rodeo either: previous adventures include a ghostbusting mission across the province, an overlanding adventure in lifted commuter cars, and a crusade to Alaska in a 1987 Ford Motorhome - to prove gold mining can be done on a budget. Each went as well as you might expect, along with many mishaps you might not.
Of all their adventures, they are most excited about this newest one, since the boys had the pleasure of not only sharing it with friends and family, but including them in the show itself. They are endlessly thankful for the support. The final product is finished and is currently in the process of being pitched to networks, streaming services, Lordco cashiers, the people who hand out the Costco samples, innocent bystanders, and anyone else who will listen. Follow them on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok @thatthingwedid, and
look out for the Studio Show dropping Summer this year!
The presenters give a final thank you to everyone who came out!

While no one is suggesting anyone actually sits on the hoods of our Porsches to read the books picked in the book club, we are as engrossed in our reading of the book club choices as the picture on the right suggests, and the cars are ever present. Here is the first Book Club report from Kim Cole:
Brought together and graciously hosted by Diane Cruikshank in her Cordova Bay home, seven women gathered on a dark and windy February evening, the undecided tempest blowing about outside moodily setting the scene to discuss “TheHousemaid”, a gripping psychological thriller written by Frieda McFadden.
As the group relaxed into the evening and chatted over a delicious variety of snacks and beverages, Lynn produced her newly acquired Japanese rubber cutting board and laid out a selection of freshly sliced apple varieties for tasting, complete with a hard copy “tasting note” description and history for each variety. It was a fun and “novel” way to compare apples to apples, proving they truly are not all the same.
With satisfied tummies and a beverage of choice in hand, the seven of us settled comfortably around the dining table to discuss the book. “TheHousemaid”, set on Long Island, is a story is about a young woman struggling to overcome her past and get a fresh start in life, who in desperation takes a live-in maid position to work for a wealthy family in a house full of thinly disguised tension and dark secrets. It was an “edge of your seat” read which generated a lively
discussion amongst the group about the characters (from “what wasshe thinking?”, to “that was brilliantly planned!”), plot twists, feminist issues, and of course movie vsbook. Certain aspects of the story were thought-provoking, but there will be no spoilers here for those who haven’t read the book or watched the movie!
Participating in the book club is a fun way to get to know other women in the VIRPCA in a relaxed and friendly setting, discover common interests, and enjoy the variety of personalities and opinions which make for a mentally stimulating and fun evening. It also provides an opportunity to read books outside of our usual selections, based on other’s interests and suggestions. The current book we are reading is
“TheLionWomenofTehran”by Marjan Kamali, a historical fiction novel about two Iranian women during the 1950s through to the 1979 revolution, a timely subject which explores friendship, feminism and the struggle for freedom.
Book club meetings are hosted on a rotating basis, the next scheduled gathering will be in April. For information or to be added to the participant list contact Diane at dmc019@icloud.com.

Porsche Ladies Circle Karen Bresler
The Porsche Ladies Tea has morphed from an initial meeting for the article for the January 2025 issue of Porscher. Since then, we have joined together for Cars & Coffee, the launch of the 992 at Porsche Victoria, sat together at the 2024 AGM, added to the crowd at the 2025 AGM, enjoyed the continuation of Garth’s Ladies Drive in August and had a fabulous time at Christmas with the first ever Ladies Holiday Brunch. Our numbers have grown, and with that, a greater sense of connection between the women in VIRPCA. I think it is fair to say that the women members have moved from names on the membership list into a clear sub-culture within the club and many have taken on leadership roles. In the Survey issued by the Executive in 2025, responses indicate a desire for more “ladies events”. And many are in the works. If you are a co-member and do not receive email, please contact PCA to add an email address on to your membership information.
Marilyn Sing for arranging, and compiling the initial email list and Lynn Duplessis, who continues to act as administrator for the WhatsApp group where ongoing communication takes place in the moment.
As we move toward warmer days, a new get together is in the works. Think of us a circle of women, connected by all that is Porsche, and coming together to empower, strengthen connection and support each other in life generally; and by creating a safe place to discuss topics that most women usually keep internalized, for many reasons. Some of these
reasons will no doubt be topics in and of themselves.
Meetings will be monthly, and each meeting will either have a specific topic, or a guest speaker or both. The first meeting will be toward the end of April/early May. Details to be confirmed and communicated shortly.
If you want to be added to an email list advising of PorsHERevents, please email me at editor@virpca.org. Emails are a way of imparting news about upcoming events for the ladies, and sent out “blind copied” to ensure privacy. I want to thank
In closing, I want to mention that Imogen Burr will be leading the SPRING FLING - a beautiful scenic drive on May 23. Make a note of the date in your calendars. I am hoping the you will all come out and add to the beauty of the drive and the season.

The Lost Art of the "Hands-On" Porsche
There is a strong bond between many owners and their Porsche.
This bond is not built in service department waiting rooms or detailing studios, but through a hands-on appreciation of the quality and engineering that has defined the Porsche experience.
Today, however, we are being sold the narrative of the “Expert Barrier”.
Marketing departments and "specialist" service centers have spent the last decades whispering a subtle, expensive message: that these cars are too complex, too precious, and too fragile for the average owner to touch. They’ve built a wall of perceived expertise that separates us from our own vehicles. We are being conditioned to believe that even the most basic skills like checking fluids, managing tire pressures, or treating leather requires a specialized certification and a $$$-per-hour shop rate.
It starts with the small things. We’ve reached a point where a simple car wash has been re-branded as "stage-one paint decontamination or bespoke ceramic maintenance," carrying a huge price tag. While professional detailing certainly has its place, the idea that a Porsche owner isn't "qualified" to wash their own car is absurd. By outsourcing the wash, you lose a primary way we cam interact with our cars. When you hand-wash your Porsche, you appreciate every curve; you notice any defects long before they become a bigger issue and most of all enjoy the satisfaction of “a job well done”
When we stop touching our cars, we stop understanding them. We trade a "sound decision" for a "suggested solution." Instead of learning the whybehind a maintenance interval, we are told to just trust the dashboard light and the service advisor’s tablet.
One of the advantages of membership in The Porsche Club of America is the technical knowledge available. PCA has been built on a foundation of shared experiences and their workshop forums are a goldmine of information.
I want to build a Technical Exchange Forum here in our own region, where members can share workarounds, technical shortcuts, and the confidence to say, "I can do this myself."
We can create Tech Sessions that focus on the fundamentals, along with Forums giving members a platform to share ideas, experiences and technical knowledge based on specific models or global applications. I am starting by building Google groups, however I will be exploring better solutions. I welcome your input.
For those with the interest, we can reclaim our mechanical soul, the expertise is in this club.
We have members with decades of engineering, racing, and restoration experience.
My goal is to unlock that knowledge.

“The Year of the Horse” 2026 Chinese
New Year Celebration
Report by Karen Bresler
Photos: Wyman Lee and as credited otherwise
Don Mee Restaurant in Victoria was vibrating on a higher plane on February 22, 2026, when many patrons came to enjoy a meal and welcome in the Year of the Fire Horse. Wyman and Sandy Lee superbly organized the ever popular event for VIR. There were members from Port Alberni, Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo, among others. Wyman and Sandy picked the menu so all we had to do was enjoy the piles of delicious food rotating around the table, while enjoying that company for which VIR is renowned. Wyman took the photos, although Dean Gaschermann was spotted using Wyman’s camera on occasion.
We also enjoyed a Happy New Year cake as a bonus dessert, and all left with a red envelopes of chocolate coins and a foil wrapped horse, offering prosperity on the road ahead this year. Thank you Wyman and Sandy!
And, on our cars the ever present reminder of the horse, on the Porsche Logo, which represents the coat of arms for Stuttgart, Germany, where Porsche headquarters are located and where the cars are produced. It honors the city's origins as a horse-breeding farm.
Roving Reporter- This issue’s Roving Reporter is Gordon Halkett
Reporting in February from Bonaire, Caribbean, Gordon Halkett writes:
“What better place to catch up on back issues of Panorama than the beachfront in Bonaire?
“Only one Porsche sighted in the last two weeksan early Cayenne turbo. Very dirty, but obviously functioning well for its own owner.”
“Someone obviously has a good sense of humour here. Look what I found on the street! A Cayenne S done up with 1970’s Gulf oil livery. And matching Fiat 500 The Cayenne is converted into a rag top, with a top that follows the design on a 718 Cayman Spyder. “
Brad Pape, PCA Zone 6 Rep
Introducing our new Zone 6 Representative–Brad Pape
Brad’s passion for cars began in high school, where a mandatory Lamborghini Countach poster hung on his bedroom wall. From there, he moved into muscle cars starting with a Firebird, followed by a 440 Road Runner, and eventually a Z28 Camaro.
In 1987, he bought a Turbo Supra, marking the real start of his sports car journey. Four years later, a friend suggested he buy his Porsche a 1986 944 Turbo. Brad insisted he already had a great sports car. His friend simply said, “Take it for a couple of days.” That was all it took. Brad has owned Porsches ever since. Today, he and his wife Kelly enjoy a 2013 Carrera S Cabriolet and a 2024 Macan GTS.
Brad has been a PCA member since 1997. During that time, he has served the BC Interior Region as Vice President for five years, President for three years, and Interim President for another year. He and Kelly have attended numerous national and regional events, valuing the camaraderie of the club and, of course, the cars.
Professionally, Brad spent 20 years as a rail traffic controller for a national railway. After leaving the industry, he transitioned into sales, first representing a Montana log home company and later working as a Realtor. Alongside his professional career, he coached varsity university athletics for 26 years, earning five Provincial Coach of the Year awards and one All-Canadian Coach designation.
In his spare time, Brad stays active with golf, softball, pickleball, and club activities. He looks forward to serving as Zone 6 Representative travelling throughout the region and connecting with the outstanding members of the Northwest’s PCA communities
Greetings Everyone, Welcome to March.
February was a great month weather wise in all of Zone 6. It showed that everyone is excited to get out in their cars to enjoy the sunny and unseasonably warm winter weather. By the number of insurance forms I received, the season has definitely started early.
Entry for parade in Lake Placid, NY June 14-20, 2026, opened at the end of January and entries came in by the truckload. Currently more than 1300 primary and more than 2500 total attendance is already booked. It will be one of the biggest on record. Speaking of Parade, it’s a long ways away but, planning is well underway for the 2027 Parade which takes place in our Zone 6, Boise, ID and hosted by The Silver Sage Region.
Big newsy, The Rose Cup at Portland International Raceway will also be hosting a Porsche Club racing event on the same weekend, July 11,12. It is the first time in many years that club racing has returned to the Pacific Northwest. If you have the time, this will be a great event to attend.
Plans are still ongoing for the upcoming President’s meeting on April 11th In Sydney, B.C. Kelly and I are looking forward to meeting all of the presidents at that time. Currently, we are starting to fill up our summer calendar and planning to get out to most or all of the regions for one of your events.

North Island
Director: Marc P. Klijnsmit
Hello from sunny Parksville!
North Island had quite a few new members in the last couple months! Cars and coffee meetings are in my opinion the best way to get people (who are not members yet) excited about a PCA membership! People see a large group of members come together and share experiences and stories and I think you just want to be a part of that.
Our first ‘North Island’ dinner of the year was in Port Alberni on the 14th of March and was SOLD OUT! We had a full restaurant! People from all over the island drive up and/or down to enjoy German schnitzels at Little Bavaria. This restaurant has been a popular destination for the Porsche club for years and it was no surprise to see more than 40 people show up. Gary Glover organized a drive after dinner and a total of 8 Porsches and 15 members joined up to do a short drive through the Alberni valley. We had some VIP guests come to the dinner; Lisa, JJ and Rex from Porsche Nanaimo! Thanks for joining us!
For the next months we have more lunches and dinners planned, so make sure you follow our Facebook group and check out our website for events and drives.
The Vancouver Island Region of the Porsche Club of America celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and we have some cool stuff coming up this summer. For members who attend cars and coffee, I have window clings available with our 30th anniversary logo and the original PCA cling as well. Come see me or another member at the big table if you want one for your Porsche!
On a weekly basis I get questions about cars, events and other Porsche related stuff. Keep ‘m coming! Always welcome to help our fellow members with all sorts of questions.
Feel free to reach out to me at northisland@virpca.org or call or text me at 416-909-3901

We had an early start to the 2026 season with several enjoyable events on the southern end of the island. In January, we kicked off the year with the Coffee Lovers Tour through the backroads of the Saanich Peninsula, culminating at Level Ground Coffee Roasters. Twenty members toured the facility and learned about the intricate process of sourcing and roasting fair-trade, globally sourced coffee beans. We ended the afternoon with a stop at Brewsky’s Taphouse in Brentwood Bay.
In February, we were fortunate to enjoy a cool but beautiful day for the Wine & Roses Tour, with a visit to a family-owned local rose supplier, Eurosa Farms. Who would have guessed that Eurosa Farms is a major supplier of premium-quality roses? Ryan, our tour guide and the owner, provided a wonderful tour along
with an informative introduction to the business of growing roses. Many spouses left the facility with lovely bouquets of roses. We concluded the afternoon by gathering for lunch at the bistro in Church & State Winery.
In early March, we hosted a casual social dinner at 4Mile Brewpub. The private room was perfect for enjoying each other's company and conversation while sharing a wonderful meal.
If you’re a new member, I encourage you to attend a Fast.Food event. It’s a fantastic opportunity to sample offerings from great restaurants and socialize with your fellow Porsche members.
Throughout the year, everyone is welcome to join us for Coffee & Cars in the parking lot near Whole Foods at Uptown Mall every Sunday morning, rain or shine.
Stay tuned for more details, and be sure to check the VIR-PCA event calendar and Facebook for event reminders.

There will be two ‘New Member Meetings’ this year, It’s our opportunity to buy you lunch and get to know you. We will be reaching out to you with the details.
Do you wear your name badge to Cars & Coffee, or our other events? Here are five good reasons for why you should.
1. Makes introductions effortless. Even in a friendly club, not everyone remembers names. A badge removes that awkward moment and helps conversations start naturally.
2. Builds a more welcoming atmosphere. New members or guests feel more comfortable approaching others when names are visible it signals openness and inclusivity.
3. Strengthens community connections. When people can address each other by name, interactions feel more personal, which helps deepen relationships in the club.
4. Supports the Executive and Event Organizers. It is much easier for the Executive and Event Organizers to identify members, introduce people, and manage activities when they can see easily who you are.
5. Shows pride and professionalism. Wearing your badge demonstrates respect for the club and the event it signals that you are engaged and proud to be part of the group.
If you are a new member, please reach out to your Area Director to obtain your badge. New member badges are ordered upon joining and are sent to the Area Director to provide to you at Cars & Coffee. We have recently processed a large volume of badges and many are waiting for pick up by members.
