MY NAME IS LEONAVIRLYN "VIRLYN" BANGCOT.

I AM A FIRST-GENERATION FILIPINO-AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENT CURRENTLY ATTENDING MY THIRD YEAR AT LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ENAMORED BY VISUAL AND SPATIAL HARMONY, WHICH LED ME TO PURSUE ARCHITECTURE. THROUGH MY WORK, I AIM TO CREATE DESIGNS THAT ARE INTENTIONAL AND IMPACTFUL, WITH A FOCUS ON TRANSLATING EVERYDAY EXPERIENCES INTO SPATIAL IDEAS.

OUTSIDE OF THE STUDIO, I ENJOY LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCED ARCHITECTS AND OTHER DISCLIPLINES FIRSTHAND, GAINING INSIGHT INTO THEIR DESIGN PROCESSES. I AM CONSTANTLY LOOKING TO EXPAND MY PERSPECTIVE AND DEVELOP MY CRAFT.

SOFTWARE: AVIATION HISTORY MUSEUM RHINO, AUTOCAD, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

ENGINES OF INNOVATION EXPLORES THE TRANFORMATION OF INDUSTRIAL REMNANTS INTO ARCHITECTURAL FORM. THE MUSEUM REIMAGINES JET ENGINE BLADES AS BOTH STRUCTURE AND AN ENVELOPE. THROUGH REPETITION AND SIZE VARIATION, THESE ELEMENTS GENERATE A RHYTHMIC SYSTEM THAT FOSTERS AN INTRICATE SPACE INVOLVING LIGHT AND MOVEMENT.

THE BUILDING OPERATES AS A MUSEUM OF FLIGHT, CENTERED AROUND A LARGE ATRIUM WHERE AIRCRAFTS THROUGHOUT HISTORY ARE SUSPENDED AND VISIBLE FROM MULTIPLE LEVELS AND VANTAGE POINTS. THIS CENTRAL VOID ELIMINATES A SINGULAR PERSPECTIVE AND INSTEAD, ENCOURAGES A 360 DEGREE UNDERSTANDING OF THE AIRCRAFTS ON DISPLAY.

SURROUNDING THIS CORE, SPACES ARE SHAPED THROUGH THE SHIFTING GEOMETRY OF THE BLADE SYSTEM, CREATING MOMENTS THAT FRAME VIEWS AND MODULATE LIGHT. THE STRUCTURE GUIDES VISITOR CIRCULATION WHILE PRODUCING A SENSE OF MOVEMENT AND LIFT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

WHAT WAS ONCE A DEVICE MEANT TO LIFT AN AIRCRAFT IS NOW BEING REINTERPRETED AS A STRUCTURE THAT GUIDES PEOPLE THROUGH SPACE, SHAPING THE EXPERIENTIAL ATMOSPHERE.

LOCATION: BUFFALO BAYOU, HOUSTON, TEXAS

SOFTWARE:

RHINO, AUTOCAD, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, ADOBE PHOTOSHOP, TWINMOTION

EMERGING FROM BUFFALO BAYOU, THE PARASITOID IS BOTH A REFLECTION OF AND RESISTANCE TO ITS CONTENTS: BRAIN-EATING AMEOBA. FLOWING THROUGH THE BODY OF WATER, THE AMEOBA MAKES IT UNSAFE TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH. THE FORM MIMICS THE INVASIVE ORGANISM IT SEEKS TO CONFRONT, USING FLUID, PARASITIC GEOMETRY AS MEANS OF UNDERSTANDING AND TRANSFORMING ITS HOST.

THE STRUCTURE DRAWS WATER DIRECTLY FROM THE BAYOU, STUDYING AND FILTERING IT THROUGH INTEGRATED RESEARCH. THE WATER IS THEN REUSED WITHIN THE BUILDING BEFORE BEING RELEASED BACK INTO THE BAYOU, TREATED WITH CLEANING AGENTS THAT ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO ITS REMEDIATION. THIS PROCESS CULMINATES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ATRIUM IN THE MOVING WATER ART EXHIBIT, WHERE THE PURIFICATION IS MADE VISIBLE. BLURRING THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN LANDSCAPE AND STRUCTURE, THE PARASITOID TRANSFORMS CONTAMINATION INTO AWARENESS, RESILIENCE, THEN RENEWAL.

7+ ACRE PARK WITH 1 ACRE DEDICATED TO A DOG PARK THE CITY OF RUSTON & DIRECTOR OF RUSTON ANIMAL CONTROL, BILL SANDERSON

STUDIO COURSE: THIRD YEAR - WINTER & SPRING 2025-2026

LOCATION: RUSTON, LOUISIANA, SOUTH OF THE ANIMAL CONTROL CENTER

ROLE:

INTERDISCIPLINARY COORDINATOR (ARCHITECTURE + SCULPTURE)

THE BARKYARD IS A STUDENT-LED PROJECT MARKING THE FIRST PHASE OF A LONGTERM PARK PROJECT, INTENDED TO POPULATE OVER THE NEXT 8+ YEARS THROUGH LOUISIANA TECH'S DESIGN BUILD PROGRAM. 29 ARCHITECTURE AND 10 SCULPTURE STUDENTS WERE TASKED TO DESIGN A MASTERPLAN, ENTRYWAY STRUCTURE, AND PUBLIC SCULPTURES OVER THE COURSE OF 3 MONTHS FROM NOVEMBER 2025 - FEBRUARY 2026. THE DESIGNS ARE CURRENTLY BEING BUILT BY 35 STUDENTS AND CONSTRUCTION IS SET TO BE COMPLETED BY MAY 22ND, 2026.

CONCIEVED AS AN EXTENSION OF THE LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER, THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE VISIBILITY AND CREATE MEANINGFUL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN VISITORS AND SHELTER DOGS, IN HOPES OF HELPING THEM FIND THEIR FOREVER HOMES. TO SET THIS FOUNDATION, WE DEVELOPED A MASTERPLAN INTENDED TO GUIDE FUTURE DESIGN BUILD STUDENTS, ESTABLISHING A FRAMEWORK THAT WILL EVOLVE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

THIS FIRST PHASE FOCUSES ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ENTRY WAY STRUCTURE THAT SERVES DUAL PURPOSES: ACTING AS BOTH A FUNCTIONAL THRESHOLD AND SPATIAL MARKER THAT INDICATES ARRIVAL. DOG ENCLOSURES ARE ALSO BEING CONSTRUCTED TO OFFER PET OWNERS A SENSE OF SAFETY WHEN ALLOWING THEIR DOGS TO ROAM FREE IN THE PARK. LASTLY, MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SCULPTURES SERVE AS PUBLIC ART FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ENJOY AND AS INTERACTIVE PLAY STRUCTURES FOR DOGS. THESE FEATURES CREATE MOMENTS OF ENGAGEMENT, MOVEMENT, AND DISCOVERY THROUGH THE SPACE.

BEING IN BOTH STUDIOS, I SERVED AS THE BRIDGE BETWEEN THE TWO DISCIPLINES, TRANSLATING DESIGN INTENT, ALIGNING PRIORITIES, AND COORDINATING COMMUNICATION TO ENSURE CONTINUITY FROM CONCEPT TO CONSTRUCTION.

STUDIO COURSE: SCULPTURES WINTER & SPRING 2025-2026

THE AGILITY DOGS CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR DOGS TO PLAY, CLIMB, RUN, AND FIND SHADE, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING SEATING FOR VISITORS. THE ENTRY SIGN ACTS AS PLAYFUL MARKER THAT HELPS VISITORS EASILY LOCATE THE PARK. LASTLY, DOUG & DOUGETTE ARE CARTOONISH DOGS THAT PROVIDE SHADED SEATING FOR VISITORS, WHILE ALSO ACTING AS LANDMARKS.

STUDIO COURSE: THIRD YEAR - WINTER & SPRING 2025-2026

CONSTRUCTED FROM STEEL PIPES, SUCKER RODS, PERFORATED PANELS, CONCRETE, AND WOOD, THE DOGTROT ESTABLISHES THE PRIMARY ENTRANCE INTO THE PARK. THE STRUCTURE IS SPLIT BETWEEN A RIGID, ORTHOGONAL SIDE REPRESENTING HUMAN ORDER AND A NON-ORTHOGONAL, DYNAMIC SIDE

INDIVIDUAL ITERATION

THAT REFLECTS THE PLAYFUL NATURE OF DOGS. THIS CONTRAST IS EXPRESSED THROUGH BOTH FORM AND MOVEMENT, GUIDING VISITORS THROUGH THE SPACE, WHILE ALSO FRAMING AREAS OF VISUAL INTEREST. DESIGNED IN RESPONSE TO THE CITY'S MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS, THE STRUCTURE REMAINS OPEN, SIMPLE, AND EASILY NAVIGABLE, WHILE MAINTAINING ITS FUNCTIONAL AND EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES. AS BOTH A LIMINAL SPACE AND FUNCTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE, THE DOGTROT INCLUDES A DOG WASH STATION, REINFORCING ITS FUNCTIONALITY.

THIS DIGITAL PIECE IS AN EXPLORATION OF STRUCTURE AND RESISTANCE, WHERE THE GRID IS NEITHER OBEYED NOR REJECTED BY THE CUBES, RATHER NEGOTIATED. FORM EMERGES THROUGH TENSION AND THE INABILITY TO ESCAPE THE PREDETERMINED ENVIRONMENT.

THESE RAW IMAGES EXPLORE BALANCE, COMPOSITION, AND VISUAL HARMONY, FOCUSING ON THE SILENT BEAUTY OF OUR EASILYOVERLOOKED, EVERYDAY SPACES. THEY CAPTURE HOW SUBTLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MATERIALS AND LIGHTING SHAPE OUR PERCEPTION OF AN ATMOSPHERE. EACH SHOT REFRAMES THE FAMILIAR INTO A STATIC EXPERIENCE CALLING FOR DEEPER OBSERVATION.

CONSTRUCTION COMING UNDONE

THIS COMPOSITION CREATES A VISUAL EXAMPLE OF COMPOSURE AND RUPTURE. ONE SIDE IS STRUCTURED AND TIGHTLY CONTROLLED, WHILE THE OTHER BEGINS TO FRAGMENT AND BECOME UNSTABLE. THIS TRANSITION GRADUALLY UNFOLDS, ALLOWING TENSION TO BUILD AS THE ORDERED SYSTEM BEGINS TO SLIP, DISTORT, AND BECOME UNDONE.

BOTH STATES EXIST SIMULTANEOUSLY, SUGGESTING THAT THE STRUCTURE AND DESTRUCTION ARE INHERENTLY LINKED. THIS PIECE CAPTURES A MOMENT SUSPENDED BETWEEN THE TWO WHERE CONTROL IS STILL PRESENT, BUT ITS CLEARLY DISSOLVING.
