or Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon, MSN, RNC-OB, EFM, IPPE, nursing is more than a profession. It is a calling shaped by personal loss, faith and a determination to ensure families facing unimaginable heartbreak never feel alone.

As a Bereavement Nurse Navigator, LamarqueBordelon supports families experiencing miscarriage, stillbirth, life-limiting diagnoses and infant loss. Her work begins in some of life’s most difficult moments, helping parents understand their choices, communicate their wishes and create meaningful memories with their babies. It continues long after they leave the hospital. “Grief does not end at discharge,” she says. Her understanding of that grief is deeply personal. Twenty-eight years ago, Lamarque-Bordelon lost her first daughter, Angelle Marie, at just 20 months old. The experience ultimately led her to nursing and later to perinatal bereavement care. “I cannot change what happened to my family, but I can use what I learned through that loss to make the path more compassionate for another family,” she says. That commitment has grown far beyond the bedside. After recognizing the lack of ongoing resources available to grieving parents, Lamarque-Bordelon founded St. Tammany Parish’s first bereavement support group for pregnancy and infant loss. The group provides a place where parents can speak their babies’ names, share their stories and connect with others who understand.

Her advocacy also reached the state level as the author of Louisiana’s Angel’s Law. The legislation seeks to create more consistent, trauma-informed bereavement care, including improved staff education, mental health resources and access to cooling devices that can allow parents additional time with their babies. “Compassionate care should never depend on a family’s ZIP code or the individual experience of the nurse working that day,” she says. Her vision is now national. Through Wings National Act, Lamarque-Bordelon is advocating for consistent, evidencebased standards for perinatal bereavement care across the country, with the hope that Louisiana can become a model for meaningful change.

There is an artistry to creating beautiful hair, but for Nick Graham, the most meaningful work has always extended far beyond the chair. Since beginning his career in 2010, Nick has built a reputation around an approach that feels refined, personal, and distinctly natural. His focus is on lived-in brunettes and reds for coloring, precision cutting for long to short hair, and custom k-tip extensions. With that, each service is considered through the lens of the individual sitting in front of him and each one starts with his approach to a seated consultation. Fostering Independence and Dignity Through Compassionate Care Alexander Milne Developmental Services is the state’s oldest Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID).

or more than a century, the name Alexander Milne has been connected to a remarkable mission of care. Today, that legacy lives on in a beautiful residential community in Waldheim, where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the support, experiences and freedom to live full, meaningful lives.

Alexander Milne Developmental Services provides 24-hour individualized care with a focus on independence, selfdetermination and personal fulfillment. Yet to experience Milne is to understand that it feels far more like a neighborhood than a facility. Residents live together in single-family homes surrounded by expansive grounds, creating a setting that is both peaceful and deeply personal. That sense of home is intentional. Each resident receives individualized programming developed around his or her interests, strengths, abilities and goals. Services range from medical, health and wellness support to recreational therapy, social skills, nutrition, daily living skills and vocational development. Residents are also encouraged to be active members of the greater St. Tammany community through social, spiritual, recreational and employment opportunities. Milne’s roots reach back to 19th-century New Orleans and philanthropist Alexander Milne, a Scottish immigrant who arrived in America in 1776. After building a successful life in New Orleans, Milne directed in his 1838 will that his estate be used to establish homes for destitute orphan boys and girls. 40

His vision endured through the Civil War, yellow fever outbreaks, the growth of New Orleans and, generations later, Hurricane Katrina. Over time, the organization’s mission evolved to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After Katrina forced residents to evacuate to Mississippi, Milne eventually found its new home on the Northshore, opening its Waldheim community in 2015 and later expanding its services to include men. Today, 44 residents call Milne home, with current capacity for 60 and room for the community to grow even further. Some residents have spent much of their lives with Milne, forming lasting friendships and becoming part of a community built around dignity, inclusion and choice.

We Need Your Help! Zeus’ Rescues temporarily closes food bank after repeated thefts. Zeus’ Rescues known for caring for the runaway dog Scrim is temporarily closing its pet food bank after someone repeatedly stole food and supplies from a van overnight, according to the organization. The food bank helps struggling families keep their pets fed and, in turn, helps keep those animals in their homes and out of shelters.

Michelle Cheramie, owner of Zeus’ Rescues, said the robber returned multiple times throughout the night, taking food and supplies from the organization’s van. Zeus’ Rescues is asking the community to help raise $20,000 to build a secure shed at its Freret Street location. A donor has offered to match the first $20,000 raised, meaning the organization could have $40,000 toward the project if it reaches its goal. The shed would be placed inside the secure backyard at Zeus’ Place, making the food and supplies inaccessible from the street.

e r u t a e f Who in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher? I was very fortunate to have many fantastic teachers throughout school. But, it was my fourth grade Social Studies teacher who was one of my biggest influences. She was just real. She was hilarious; she made class fun, and you always knew that she truly cared about you. We stayed in touch long after I left her class. When I was in college and also first starting out as a new teacher I could call her for advice. She passed away a couple of years ago and I still think about her often.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher? How much teaching has changed in the area of technology. Kids are so used to having it at their fingertips, and getting them to not always rely on it or immediately look to technology for an answer can be challenging. Technology is an amazing tool and I love using it, but I also want my students to know how to think for themselves, communicate with each other and be problem solvers. It’s important to have a good balance in class.

How do you make learning engaging and fun for your students? When students can connect what they are doing to real life and understand why it matters helps keep them engaged. They also learn by actually doing instead of just sitting and listening to me talk. I try to keep them involved and give them as many opportunities as possible to work with their classmates.

If you could leave your students with one lasting message, what would it be? Always work to your full potential. Give everything you do your best effort, and above all, be kind.

The inaugural festival proved immediately that something special had been created. Nearly 2,000 people came to Cassidy Park despite more than five inches of rain. That first year, the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival was named “Best New Event of the Year” by the Louisiana Association of Fairs & Festivals. The festival also received a first-place award for its poster and logo and was recognized as one of Louisiana’s Top Ten Must-See Festivals.

This September, the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival celebrates 15 years of bringing music, culture and community together beneath the towering pines and moss-draped oaks of beautiful Cassidy Park. What began in 2012 as an idea to celebrate Bogalusa’s rich musical heritage has grown into one of the Gulf South’s most respected music festivals. From the beginning, the vision has been about more than putting great music on a stage. Our mission is to preserve and promote the blues and the music of our heritage, provide a family-friendly cultural experience, and showcase Bogalusa and Washington Parish as a destination rich in music, history, art and community.

The recognition continued as the festival grew. OffBeat Magazine named the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival “Best Festival Outside New Orleans,” helping establish Bogalusa as a destination for serious music lovers. At the heart of the festival has always been heritage. Bogalusa is the birthplace of legendary pianist and composer Henry Roeland Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, whose unmistakable style helped shape the sound of New Orleans music. The festival has continued to honor the musicians, stories and musical traditions that connect Bogalusa to Louisiana’s extraordinary musical history. Through the years, the stages at Cassidy Park have welcomed an impressive collection of artists, including Tab Benoit, Keb’ Mo’, Bobby Rush, Samantha Fish, Ruthie Foster, Anders Osborne, Marc Broussard, Sonny Landreth, Paul Thorn, North Mississippi Allstars and many more.

But the Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival has never been only about who is on the stage. It is families spreading blankets beneath the trees, friends gathering over Louisiana food, artists and vendors sharing their work, children experiencing the festival for the first time and visitors discovering the beauty and hospitality of our community. Today, the festival remains a nonprofit organization powered by volunteers, sponsors and a community committed to keeping this tradition alive. On September 25–26, 2026, we return to Cassidy Park to celebrate an incredible milestone. Fifteen years of heart. Fifteen years of soul. Fifteen years of sound. And the blues are still playing in Bogalusa.

or Amanda Bravender, motherhood is not simply one part of her life. It is the heart behind everything she builds, creates, and pours herself into. At 37, Amanda is the owner of Brave Living LLC, the umbrella company for two creative businesses: The Brave Farmer and AHB Makeup. Through The Brave Farmer, she operates a small honey farm and humane live bee rescue service. Through AHB Makeup, she provides hair, makeup, wig, and special effects services for opera, ballet, theater productions, weddings, and special events. Her work may take her from a bee rescue in Louisiana to backstage at a production across the country, but home is always where her greatest role begins. Amanda and her husband are raising five children: James, Jonah, Joshua, Jaxon, and their youngest, Fay Monroe. With children ranging from ages 4 to 16, their multigenerational home is rarely quiet, but Amanda would not have it any other way.

“Chaotic, but in the very best way,” is how she describes life as a working mom.

Her children have grown up alongside her businesses, often becoming part of the adventure themselves. Her boys help on the farm, tending animals, gardening, and tackling outdoor projects. Amanda and Fay Monroe share time in the kitchen baking and cooking. No matter which hat she is wearing, Amanda’s goal is simple: to leave people, places, and experiences a little better than she found them. More than any professional accomplishment, Amanda is proudest of becoming a mother. Still, 18 years of selfemployment have shaped her in ways that deeply influence the example she sets for her children. She wants them to understand that they never have to fit into one box. They can dream big, learn something new, change direction, take risks, and create lives that feel meaningful to them. Entrepreneurship has taught Amanda that success comes from showing up, building relationships, asking for opportunities, and continuing forward even when things feel uncertain. Motherhood has taught her something equally important: to slow down. Her children remind her to notice flowers blooming, eggs being gathered from the chickens, laughter in the kitchen, and all the ordinary moments that quietly become the most important ones. Years from now, Amanda hopes her children remember a childhood that felt magical. She wants them to remember gardens, farm adventures, family meals, holidays, spontaneous projects, and a home filled with traditions. But above everything else, she hopes they remember one thing clearly: they were deeply loved.

Jessica + Ryan Long before Jessica Mitchell and Ryan Czachor knew they would one day stand together at the altar, life was already quietly weaving their story together through friendship, timing, distance, and two very special yellow Labs. SEPTEMBER 2026

he couple first met in 2019 while working at their first jobs in Austin, Texas. Jessica often brought her dog, Bear, to happy hours, and Ryan always seemed to find a reason to stop by and say hello. A few months later, Jessica learned that Bear’s mother had another litter. Knowing Ryan wanted a dog, she passed along the information, and soon Ryan brought home Kita, Bear’s sister.

Even when life took them in different directions during the pandemic, their connection never completely faded. Jessica returned to Louisiana while Ryan moved to Chicago, but they stayed in touch through Instagram, often commenting on photos of Bear and Kita. Then, in October 2021, timing finally brought them together. Ryan returned to Austin for the Texas A&M versus Alabama football game and invited Jessica to what he casually called dinner at Bob’s Steakhouse. That dinner became their first date, and almost immediately, something felt different. After months of long distance, Jessica traveled to Chicago in 2022 to drive back to Austin with Ryan and Kita. What was supposed to be a two-week visit became a move-in, and from there, life simply began falling into place. Their dogs bonded just as easily as they did, 68

and Jessica and Ryan knew they had found home in one another. In September 2024, Ryan proposed at their favorite Austin park, a place they visited almost daily with Bear and Kita. With the downtown skyline behind them and both dogs by their side, Ryan surprised Jessica while a close friend secretly captured the moment. Jessica’s parents then flew in from Mandeville to celebrate with them, making an already unforgettable weekend even more meaningful. On April 11, 2026, Jessica became Mrs. Czachor at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, just blocks from where she grew up. Deacon Steve, who had also married Jessica’s sister and brother-in-law, officiated the ceremony before guests gathered at Tchefuncta Country Club for a reception filled with light blues, greens, Louisiana traditions, and thoughtful personal touches. Jessica wore the Anne Barge Graham gown, the very first dress she had tried on. Its corded lace, Chantilly lace underlay, scalloped hem, and chapel train felt romantic and classic, while a matching lace topper created a beautiful ceremony look before she revealed the strapless gown later in the evening.

Today, Jessica and Ryan live in Austin, but the Northshore remains part of the life they imagine ahead. When the time comes to begin a family, they hope to return to Louisiana, bringing their love story full circle to the place that has always felt like home.

The celebration was filled with pieces of their story, from pecan praline wedding cake and custom Mardi Gras-inspired light-up beads to Ryan’s Masters green jacket and a special bouquet dedication to Jessica’s mother. And because Bear and Kita had been part of their story from the very beginning, the couple made sure they were part of the wedding day, too. The dogs appeared on custom napkins and koozies, while a custom painting of Bear and Kita became a meaningful reception keepsake, signed by their family and friends.

ST. TAMMANY HEALTH SYSTEM WELCOMES ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

DR. JEFF WITTY Dr. Jeff Witty, an orthopedic surgeon now with St. Tammany Health System’s Bone and Joint Clinic in Covington, was born in New Orleans and raised in Mississippi. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, where he graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, receiving his medical degree in 2008. Following medical school, Dr. Witty completed a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He furthered his training with a one-year fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Jackson, Mississippi. As part of his sports medicine fellowship, he also trained at the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans. Prior to joining the St. Tammany Health System team, Dr. Witty practiced at North Oaks Health System, where he served as an Assistant Team Physician for Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics, providing specialized orthopedic and sports medicine care to student-athletes.
