From the Editor

April on the Northshore brings a natural sense of renewal, and there is no better time to celebrate the energy, imagination, and joy that children bring into our community.

Our Kids Issue is dedicated to the little lives making a big impact, along with the families, educators, and mentors who guide them every step of the way. These pages highlight the moments that matter, from everyday milestones to the spaces and experiences that help shape confident, kind, and curious individuals. It is a reminder that what we pour into our children today will carry forward in ways we may not even see yet.

This issue also reflects something deeper about the Northshore itself. It is a place where connection still matters, where familiar faces become part of your story, and where children are given the opportunity to grow up surrounded by support and community.

As you read through, we hope you feel inspired to slow down and be present in the small moments. Whether it is a conversation at the dinner table, a weekend spent outdoors, or simply watching your children become who they are meant to be, these are the moments that shape everything.

Because in the end, the heart of any community is found in its children, and the future is being built right here, one day at a time.

Direct FROM THE GROWERto You

The idea for Garden Spot of Mandeville began decades ago when Judy King started growing ferns in greenhouses on her property, in Bush, Louisiana. Ferns take a while to grow to a size in which they are sellable and so Tommy, King’s husband, started growing vegetables to sell since they are faster and smaller. It was at this time he realized the potential of growing annuals and perennials and selling them to friends.

Word began to spread and people from all over started coming to the greenhouses in search of beautiful plants. They eventually had the idea to open The Garden Spot of Franklinton, an outdoor store created to sell locally grown, quality plants. The store became very popular, enticing people from all over and so the King’s decided to open a store in Mandeville to reach a larger audience.

Thus Garden Spot of Mandeville was born and today both locations are run by Tommy and Judy’s daughter, Sandy, and her husband Tony. Just as they started, annuals and perennials are still grown at the local greenhouses and both locations continue to serve their communities well with high quality, locally grown plant materials and expert customer service.

Garden Spot of Mandeville is a family-owned retail garden center, offering customers a wide selection of high-quality products. Our annuals and perennials are grown at our nursery located in Bush, Louisiana, and our shrubs and trees are sourced from local nurseries so you can rest assured that your plants are coming directly from the grower to you.

Many days start in the early hours with urgent calls involving children in unsafe situations. By morning, the work shifts into a full schedule of court proceedings, case reviews, and ongoing coordination with social workers, attorneys, and support teams. Behind each case is a layered story, one that requires both legal discernment and human understanding.

At the heart of his work is a belief that the law can be a tool for restoration. Family Preservation Court focuses not only on accountability, but also on providing parents with structure, resources, and support to break cycles of neglect and abuse. Through consistent guidance and relationshipbuilding, families are given the opportunity to rebuild stability and move forward with intention.

Much of this impact happens quietly. While outcomes are not always visible to the broader community, they are deeply felt by the families involved. A child placed in a safe home. A parent choosing sobriety. A family finding its way back together. These are the moments that define the work, even if they are rarely seen.

JudgeGardner Scott

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW

In a role often defined by decisions that shape lives, Judge Scott Gardner approaches the work with quiet intention and a deep sense of responsibility. Serving as District Judge in Division G since 2013, and overseeing Family Preservation Court since 2017, his role carries both structure and weight, often beginning long before the sun rises.

The Northshore is strengthened by individuals who step into difficult spaces without seeking recognition. Foster families, case managers, social workers, volunteers, and advocacy organizations all play a role in supporting vulnerable children and families. Their collective efforts create a network of care that extends far beyond the courtroom.

Even in challenging moments, the focus remains clear. If one child’s future is changed for the better, the work is worth it. That steady commitment continues to shape not only individual outcomes, but the broader systems that support the community.

Rather than focusing on personal legacy, Judge Gardner’s goal is simple and enduring: to help create a community where families are supported, children are protected, and every individual is treated with dignity. It is a quiet kind of leadership, one that does not ask to be seen, but is felt in the lives it touches every day.

MILA ADULI IS BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE NORTHSHORE

Leading with Kindness

On any given weekend at Fontainebleau State Park, Mila Aduli might be greeting families at the inclusive playground, helping children hunt for colorful eggs, or handing out cookies during a holiday celebration. What many may not realize is that the young girl creating these moments of joy is often the one organizing them.

For Mila, advocacy is deeply personal. Her family founded the nonprofit Mina’s Mission in honor of her younger sister Mina. Growing up alongside Mina and her brother Ari, who has profound autism, shaped Mila’s understanding of compassion and inclusion from an early age. Those experiences taught her that communities must be built with intention so every child feels welcomed, supported, and valued.

Today, Mila carries that purpose forward, working to create a more inclusive Northshore where children like Ari and their families feel not only accepted but truly celebrated.

At Christ Episcopal School, Mila channels that passion into leadership. As president of the Junior Beta Club, she organizes service projects and encourages classmates to give back. In 2025, her dedication earned statewide recognition when Governor Jeff Landry named her Youth of the Year for Outstanding Leadership in Disability Inclusion.

Beyond school, Mila continues her advocacy through The Kindness Corner, her own 501c3 nonprofit. Through the program, she supports families of children with special needs while promoting access to mental health resources and special education programs.

Mila has also found creative ways to expand her impact. She authored an inclusive children’s book, Lulu’s First Mardi Gras, available on Amazon, with proceeds supporting programs that benefit local children and families.

Creating welcoming spaces for children of all abilities is another cause close to her heart. Mila helped raise funds for the inclusive playground at Fontainebleau State Park, designed so children of all abilities can play side by side. Today, she brings that space to life by hosting community events, including the Spring Eggstravaganza Where Every Bunny Belongs and the holiday favorite Cookies with Santa and the Grinch. Thanks to her fundraising efforts, these events remain free for families.

Her creativity also shines through in a recycled crayon initiative she launched. By collecting broken crayons and transforming them

into vibrant new ones, Mila raises funds for STEM and art activities at the teen hangout she helped build at We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym, where she often spends Sunday afternoons with Ari.

Mila’s commitment to service extends beyond her nonprofit work. She also serves as a team leader for Keep Louisiana Beautiful, working with classmates to pick up litter and plant trees in state parks. When she is not volunteering, she enjoys playing on the golf and tennis teams at Christ Episcopal School.

Though still in middle school, Mila Aduli is already proving that leadership is rooted in heart. Through every event she organizes and every act of kindness she inspires, she continues to honor her sister’s legacy while helping build a community where every child belongs.

Supporters and players gathered at Beau Chêne Country Club for Archbishop Hannan’s annual golf tournament, enjoying a day on the course. Teams competed with enthusiasm while building connections and supporting the school community. The tournament created a memorable experience, bringing together friends, families, and sponsors in support of Hannan’s mission.

For Northshore families, pediatric dental care is about more than routine visits. It is about trust, comfort, and knowing your child is in capable hands. Since 2006, Dr. Todd S. Brasuell has built his practice around that belief, creating a space where both children and parents feel supported from the moment they walk in.

With the opening of a newly constructed office in Madisonville just off Highway 21, that commitment continues in a setting designed to better serve a growing patient base. The expanded space allows for a more seamless experience, with thoughtful updates that support both efficiency and a higher level of care.

The new office features additional treatment rooms, a spacious waiting area, and advanced technology that enhances comfort for young patients. From a dedicated pre op sedation room to a gentler numbing system, the practice continues to prioritize ease at every step and is now introducing laser treatments for lip and tongue ties as part of its expanding approach to care.

A key part of that experience is the collaborative care provided by Dr. Brasuell and Dr. Brooke Vinturella. Together, they bring a shared approach centered on clear communication, patience, and creating a positive environment for every child. Their ability to work simultaneously within the expanded space allows for more attentive and timely care, while maintaining the personalized experience families have come to expect.

Education remains at the core of the practice. By helping families understand the importance of early dental care and reinforcing healthy habits at every stage, the team supports not only strong smiles but long term confidence in oral health.

In this new chapter, the focus remains simple and consistent. Every child should feel comfortable, every parent should feel confident, and every visit should reflect the level of care that has made this practice a trusted name on the Northshore.

SUPER MOMMelanie Byrd Rudolph

At 36 years old, Melanie Byrd Rudolph embodies what it means to live with intention, resilience, and heart. As a fundraising specialist for the St. Tammany Health Foundation, she plays a vital role in supporting the programs and services of St. Tammany Health System. Her work centers around special events and corporate giving, bringing people together for a greater purpose. But beyond her professional impact, Melanie’s story is one of strength in its truest form.

Married to her husband Zack for a decade and mother to their seven year old son William, Melanie describes life as “an adventure every day.” That adventure, however, has taken on a deeper meaning over the last two years as she has navigated active treatment for stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Balancing a full time career, motherhood, marriage, and ongoing treatment is no small feat. Yet Melanie meets each day with perspective and gratitude, grounded in what matters most.

Her diagnosis shifted everything. It clarified priorities and reinforced that family comes first, always. At the same time, she and her husband are intentional about showing William the importance of pursuing passions wholeheartedly. Through their example, he is learning that life is not just about responsibility, but about purpose, joy, and commitment to what you love.

“Children are not meant to follow our exact path. They are meant to become their own person.”

Melanie credits much of her success, both professionally and personally, to the power of teamwork. With over 15 years of experience, she has seen firsthand how the right people can elevate not only outcomes, but the entire experience. That belief extends into her home, where partnership and support are the foundation of everything they do.

What she is most proud of is not one singular achievement, but the collective strength she has discovered within herself. Navigating cancer while continuing to show up for her family and career has revealed a resilience she never knew she had. It has shaped her into a more present mother and a more grounded professional.

For Melanie, motherhood is about creating moments that last. She wants William to remember the memories, the trips, the surprises, and the feeling of being deeply loved. Traditions are a big part of that, especially during the holidays. With a last name like Rudolph, Christmas is a season they fully embrace, celebrating both New Orleans and Northshore traditions all year long.

Through it all, Melanie has learned one of motherhood’s greatest lessons. Children are not meant to follow our exact path. They are meant to become their own person. Her role is not to shape William into who she is, but to support him as he discovers who he is meant to be.

LIVING WELL ART

Tucked within a desirable Northshore community, this custom French Country inspired residence is a reflection of both thoughtful design and a life richly lived. Completed in 2023, the 4,300 square foot, single level home belongs to Cheryl Bacon and Jack Borgschulte, whose shared journey and professional accomplishments bring depth and meaning to every detail.

Real Estate Marketing and Photography

Cheryl, a retired registered nurse with more than 43 years in healthcare leadership, and Jack, a longtime engineer and former Vice President with Trane, each built remarkable careers before finding one another in the most unexpected way on an airplane. What began as a chance encounter grew into a life together marked by travel, family, and a deep appreciation for home. Today, they share four grown children and thirteen grandchildren, making this residence a true gathering place for generations.

Originally from New Orleans, Cheryl’s story includes resilience after Hurricane Katrina and a return to Louisiana roots, while Jack’s path took him from St. Louis to South Florida, San Diego, and Boston. Their experiences shaped a vision for a home that feels both grounded and globally inspired.

Designed with the expertise of Corrinn Fisher Interiors, the interior balances refined elegance with warm livability. The twelve room layout includes five bedrooms, each with a private bath, and seven bathrooms total. The open living, kitchen, and outdoor entertaining spaces form the heart of the home, flowing seamlessly into a backyard oasis with a pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen visible from nearly every rear facing room.

Guests are immediately drawn to the home’s exquisite millwork, triple crown molding, and detailed wall paneling. A striking butler’s pantry, oversized laundry room with Nantucket Fog blue cabinetry, and custom china storage showcase Cheryl’s love for organization and personal expression. Throughout the home, coordinating colors, marble and quartzite surfaces, and curated travel treasures from Italy, Greece, and Egypt create a cohesive and collected aesthetic.

The chef’s kitchen is equally impressive, featuring an oversized quartzite island, cast iron sink, double ovens, warming drawer, two dishwashers, and an eight burner Fisher and Paykel gas range. The primary suite offers spa inspired serenity with large format porcelain tile, a marble accented walk in shower, and dual vanities topped with marble.

Meaningful details add layers of history, including restored crystal chandeliers salvaged from Cheryl’s former New Orleans home and a twenty one light dining room fixture rescued from a historic property. These heirloom pieces connect past and present in a deeply personal way.

Outside, white brick, custom windows, gold painted address numbers, and a blue French inspired front door set the tone for timeless curb appeal. For Cheryl and Jack, the home’s greatest inspiration lies in its intentionality. Everything has a place, and every space tells a story.

More than a beautifully built residence, this home is a testament to love, resilience, and the art of living well. Anchored in family, shaped by experience, and designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

Mr. Joshua DIGGS

TEACHERfeature

Who in your life influenced your decision to become a teacher?

All the teachers I had throughout my life motivated me to become the educator I am today. Their kindness, guidance, and inclusiveness showed me that I could create the same kind of space for my students that they created for me.

What is your biggest challenge as a teacher?

My biggest challenge is navigating the ever-changing world we live in. Between social media, trends, politics, new teaching practices, and even AI, I’ve had to adapt my teaching style to build a safe space for my students; a place where they aren’t worried about what’s happening in the world and can grow as both students and leaders.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching?

One of my high school teachers gave me advice when I first told him I wanted to become a teacher. He said that teachers go into this profession “for the outcome, not the income.” The mentorships I form with my students motivate me every day to walk into the halls of LES and give it my best. I call my group of students my “homies”, a phrase I use to show that no matter what happens, we’ve got each other's backs.

How do you make learning engaging and fun for your students?

You have to give it your all. These kids are smart, smarter than I ever was at their age. They need someone who motivates them to go above and beyond, fosters exploration, and speaks to them with respect as the human beings they are. I am not saying I’m the expert, but I know my students know I am their biggest supporter.

If you could leave your students with one lasting message, what would it be?

At the end of every year, I write a letter to each student in my homeroom; something they can look back on in the years ahead and remember what we experienced together. Each letter is unique to that “homie.” One message I shared was, “Don’t let anyone else define success for you.” I think that’s important for all of them. Success can’t be measured by comparing yourself to others; everyone has a different starting point, journey, and potential.

On a quiet evening overlooking the water, with the sun slowly melting into the horizon, Chase Penton asked the question that would begin the next chapter of their story. It was August 13, 2024, and for Victoria, it felt like any other trip. She had forgotten her hair products and packed nothing special, completely unaware of what was about to unfold. But in that unplanned, perfectly imperfect moment, Chase set up his phone under the guise of taking a photo, capturing the entire proposal as he asked her to spend forever with him. Just the two of them, a sunset, and a surprise she never saw coming, it was everything she didn’t know she was waiting for.

Their story began years earlier on April 30, 2021, growing steadily over nearly five years into something deeply rooted and unwavering. What started as a relationship built on connection and companionship naturally evolved into a partnership filled with intention, laughter, and shared vision. By the time they said “I do” on March 6, 2026, their love felt both grounded and electric, a balance that would define their wedding day.

From there, the celebration moved to The Greystone, where every detail spoke to their personal style. The aesthetic was a soft palette of buttercream yellow and white, simple yet elevated. Victoria’s gown embodied that same vision. Ivory with delicate floral overlay patches, a fitted corset bodice, and a sweeping train created a look that felt timeless with a touch of personality. Hidden within the design were pockets, a small but meaningful detail that made the dress unmistakably hers.

Throughout the day, intentional choices made the celebration feel deeply personal. Each bridesmaid carried a different bouquet, while Victoria’s was a blend of them all, symbolizing the people who stood beside her. Their bridal party brought an unexpected moment of fun to the reception, lifting the newlyweds in chairs as the dance floor stayed full from beginning to end, exactly as they had hoped.

One of the most meaningful elements of the day was the wedding cake, lovingly created by Victoria’s mother. Designed to mirror her dress, the six tiered cake featured intricate three dimensional floral details and their custom wedding crest at the center. With layers of traditional cake filled with raspberry and buttercream, it was both a visual and sentimental centerpiece.

Though their honeymoon didn’t go as planned, with travel delays rerouting them from Banff to Playa Mujeres, Mexico, it became a reflection of their relationship itself. What began in chaos ended in something unexpectedly beautiful, leaving them already dreaming of their next adventure together.

Now settled in Mandeville, Victoria and Chase Penton begin married life the same way their story has always unfolded, with grace, joy, and a willingness to embrace whatever comes next.
