WHERE SAFETY MEETS COMMUNITY

KEEPING BALDWIN COUNTY SAFE

Public safety remains a top priority across Baldwin County, and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office continues to demonstrate a strong, proactive approach to protecting residents. Through strategic partnerships and expanded enforcement efforts, the department has focused on preventing crime before it reaches local neighborhoods while maintaining a visible and engaged presence across the county.

Under the leadership of Sheriff Anthony Lowery, the office has strengthened collaboration with federal and regional agencies, working to disrupt drug activity, gang presence, and other criminal threats. These coordinated efforts have played a key role in maintaining Baldwin County’s reputation as one of the safest areas in the state, even as it continues to be one of the fastest growing.

INVESTING IN YOUTH AND PREVENTION

A major focus of the Sheriff’s Office is investing in young people through prevention and education. School Resource Officers are embedded throughout local schools, providing not only security but also mentorship and guidance. These officers work closely with students and faculty, offering training on issues such as bullying, internet safety, and substance awareness while building positive relationships with students.

Programs like the Shining Star Camp further reinforce that commitment. Designed for children ages 8 to 12, the camp introduces youth to public safety while teaching life skills, teamwork, and responsible decision-making in a supportive environment.

These initiatives reflect a broader philosophy: addressing challenges early and creating opportunities for young people to succeed.

A COMMUNITY-CENTERED APPROACH

Beyond enforcement, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes community connection. Outreach programs, training initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations help build trust and strengthen relationships between deputies and the citizens they serve.

Sheriff Lowery has consistently emphasized the importance of that connection, noting, “We’re not just here to protect— we’re here to serve.”

That mindset is evident in the department’s day-to-day operations, where deputies are encouraged to engage with residents, support local events, and serve as visible, approachable members of the community.

LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE

Sheriff Lowery brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience, including leadership roles within both the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office.

His tenure has been marked by a focus on collaboration, innovation, and strengthening internal operations—ensuring the Sheriff’s Office remains responsive, well-trained, and equipped to meet the needs of a growing county.

MOVING FORWARD

As Baldwin County continues to grow, the Sheriff’s Office remains committed to maintaining a high standard of service. Through a combination of strong leadership, community engagement, and forward-thinking programs, the department continues to play a vital role in keeping families safe and supporting the next generation.

Experience Excellence PERSONAL

THE FACES OF Recognized Leaders in Cosmetic Surgery

Led by board-certified cosmetic surgeons Dr. James Koehler and Dr. Vincent W. Gardner, Eastern Shore Cosmetic Surgery is known as one of the Gulf Coast’s premier destinations for cosmetic surgery and medical aesthetics. The practice is dedicated to patient satisfaction, natural-looking results, and complete transformation. Their reviews and surgical outcomes speak for themselves.

Dr. Vincent W. Gardner is a triple board-certified surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in facial, breast, and body cosmetic procedures. His career began in general and bariatric surgery, guiding patients through major weight-loss journeys. That experience sparked a passion for post-weight-loss body contouring, including skin excision, body lifts, and combination procedures. Known nationally for training future surgeons and serving as an oral board examiner, Dr. Gardner brings a thoughtful, meticulous approach to every patient’s care.

Dr. James Koehler is guided by a patient-first philosophy supported by decades of advanced surgical training, national leadership in cosmetic surgery, academic appointments, and extensive experience in both facial and body procedures. After completing a general surgery internship, he pursued advanced training in maxillofacial surgery and later completed a facial cosmetic surgery fellowship under a past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Koehler finds it incredibly rewarding to use his unique abilities to help others. He especially values hearing patients share how choosing surgery has made a positive difference in their lives.

Ronald McDonald House Mobile Keeping Families Close When It Matters Most

When a child is seriously ill or injured, a family’s world can change in an instant. Hospital rooms replace bedrooms, sleep becomes scarce, and the comforts of home suddenly feel far away. In those moments, Ronald McDonald House of Mobile provides something families need most: a place to stay together.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House of Mobile is simple yet powerful, to support families with ill or injured children by providing essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing during medical care. What they offer is more than lodging. It is comfort, community, and hope during some of the most difficult days a family will face.

Each year, the House welcomes hundreds of families into its 38-guest room facility, while thousands more find respite in two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms inside USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital. Families are given a true “home away from home,” with lodging, warm meals, transportation, and compassionate support so they can remain close to their child’s bedside.

The inspiration for the Mobile House began with a simple but powerful question. In 1992, 10-year-old Day Zimlich and his mother stayed at a Ronald McDonald House in Boston while he received treatment for an inoperable brain tumor. When they returned home, Day asked, “Why don’t we have a Ronald McDonald House here?” That question sparked a movement. In 2000, Day, his family, and community leaders opened Mobile’s first House with 12 guest rooms. As the need grew, it expanded to 38 rooms in 2011, followed by the addition of two in-hospital Family Rooms.

For many parents, the House becomes a refuge during an incredibly challenging season. One family spent 131 days there after their daughter was born seven weeks early and required multiple surgeries. Throughout that time, they never had to worry about where to sleep or find a meal, sharing that it became “more than just a place to stay. It was our family, our support system, and our home away from home.”

Another family, whose newborn son was hospitalized for more than two months, experienced the same sense of comfort. Living hours away, they were able to stay just minutes from the hospital, saying they “don’t know what we would have done without it,” and calling everything, from the meals to the kindness of volunteers, “a true blessing.”

Today, the organization serves approximately 600 families each year, many staying weeks or even months. Families are never asked to pay, allowing them to focus entirely on their child’s health. Through the generosity of volunteers, donors, and community partners, Ronald McDonald House of Mobile ensures no family faces a medical crisis alone.

She is the author of Lucy Cooks and a familiar face in local media, known for bringing people together through food and shared experiences. Her ability to connect with others— whether in the store, on screen, or in the community—has become a hallmark of her leadership style.

At home, Lucy and her husband, Spiro Cheriogotis, who serves as Mayor of Mobile, are raising four children—twin sons, Nick and Jack, and daughters, Elle and Mary Barton. Together, they balance leadership in both business and public service while staying grounded in family and faith.

What has motherhood taught you that directly influences how you lead and make decisions each day?

Motherhood has helped me embrace that people require different styles of motivation, feedback, encouragement and oversight. It has also allowed me to appreciate people’s differences even more and further understand how these differences can be used to make a team stronger.

With so many demands on your time, what does balance realistically look like for you and your family?

Most of us strive for perfect balance, but that’s unrealistic. It’s more helpful to focus on achieving a better balance. One of my professors at Auburn said, “When you are in the room, be in the room,” and that’s a principle I try to live by. Whether I’m working or spending time with my kids, Spiro, friends, or at Bible study, I do my best to be fully present.

What is one value or lesson you are most intentional about teaching your children through both your work and your example?

Kindness is one of our top parenting priorities. My dad always shared what his grandfather told him: “It is nice to be smart, but it is much smarter to be nice.” When we talk with our children’s teachers, grades are never our first concern. What matters most to us is how they treat others and whether they are kind to everyone.

MANIA

What began in 19th-century China has grown into a beloved global pastime, captivating players across generations and cultures with its blend of strategy, skill, and a bit of luck. Now, mahjong is experiencing a joyful resurgence, finding a fresh, stylish following right here at home in South Alabama

The Fairhope Mahjong Getaway, organized by Marie Kline of Mahjong Magnolias, with the gracious support of Merritt Henry of Mahjong by the Bay and Stephanie Vander Dussen of Southern Charm Mahjong, brought together mahjong enthusiasts for a meaningful cause in support of Marie’s campaign as a Shucker for the American Cancer Society’s Shuck Cancer fundraiser. This thoughtfully curated weekend featured mahjong play, instruction, shopping, and time for connection, creating a welcoming experience for players of all levels.

The weekend was capped off by a beautifully hosted brunch by Neacie Johnson at her home on the Bay, where traveling guests gathered around a stunning tablescape of vibrant florals and thoughtful details. The relaxed, coastal setting offered the perfect backdrop for connection, laughter, and new friendships.

Through the generosity of participants and supporters, the weekend raised over $10,000 to fund cancer research, patient transportation, lodging, and other life-saving services—showcasing the power of community coming together to make a lasting impact.

MEET THE MAHJONG MAGNOLIAS

The Mahjong Magnolias are a group of friends, moms, and community builders who call the Eastern Shore home.

Marie Kline is an HR executive at Amazon specializing in AI, Deirdra Drinkard is an adoption attorney, and Dr. Kimberly Blackman is a pharmacist.

Their Mahjong Journey

Marie was first introduced to Mahjong by her grandmother, but her true love for the game began in 2024 after being invited to play at FGFH Clothiers in Fairhope, where Megan Pemberton Harris taught her. Inspired, Marie planned a birthday celebration for Kimberly, where the soon to be called "Magnolia" and Megan gathered to play together. What began as a simple celebration quickly turned into a shared passion, and from that moment, Mahjong Magnolias was born.

What Inspired Mahjong Magnolias

Mahjong Magnolias was built on a simple idea: women supporting women. What started locally has grown into a thriving community, bringing together women across the Eastern Shore, Mobile and beyond through connection, friendship, and purpose.

A Mission Rooted in Giving Back

Giving back is at the heart of every Mahjong Magnolias event. Supporting organizations like Children of the World, Oath Fund, Bee Brave Foundation, American Heart Association and American Cancer Society, the group has helped raise over $80,000 since December 2024—providing support for families, medical needs, and adoption grants.

What inspired you to create The Vanity, and how did you know this was your path?

Makeup has always been something I’ve loved, and over time that passion naturally grew into something more. While college is such a great path for many, I felt called to pursue hands-on experience right away and begin building something of my own. I’ve been working hard to learn, grow, and turn what I love into something meaningful.

What do you love most about what you do each day? I love helping people discover what makes them feel their best. Whether it’s finding the perfect makeup routine or the right shade of foundation, there’s something special about seeing that confidence come to life.

What does “beauty” mean to you, and how does that influence your business?

To me, beauty isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how you feel. That belief shapes everything we do at The Vanity. I want women to walk in feeling inspired and leave feeling confident, comfortable, and excited about their own unique style.

The Vanity recently expanded to include clothing and accessories. What inspired that addition, and how would you describe the style?

I always knew fashion would become part of The Vanity. It was just a matter of timing. When the moment felt right, it was a natural next step. Adding clothing and accessories allows us to offer a more complete experience. I would describe our style as classic with a Southern flair—timeless, feminine, and effortlessly polished.

The Vanity offers a thoughtfully selected collection of skincare, makeup, tools, and fragrance, celebrating individuality with clean, premium products made in North America. The boutique also features clothing and accessories and offers makeup lessons, as well as event and bridal makeup services. Located at 410 Fairhope Avenue, The Vanity invites you to stop in, try something new, have fun, and meet Meagan. Help welcome and support this new Fairhope business.
