For over 25 years, Gulf States Real Estate and our affiliate companies have been providing commercial and residential real estate brokerage, property management, construction, and development services to our clients. I would like to say that this was all my idea, but it was not. Over the years, our clients challenged us to expand our service mix to better meet their needs.

Certainly, it was not an easy task to build a TEAM of individuals with diverse talents, backgrounds and experiences. However, with the right people, we have been able to produce some incredible projects for our clients and within the communities where we are. We are now active in over a dozen states around the U.S. Our geographic diversity combined with our unique product mix have proven to be essential in navigating natural disasters, pandemics, major shifts in business climates, and increasing governmental regulations.

This issue is our first graduation issue, and we are thankful to three outstanding local schools that allowed us to share in the celebration of their graduates. We congratulate the kindergarten class of St. James Episcopal School on moving up to first grade. We are excited to see Christ the King Catholic School’s eight grade class ready for high school. We applaud the students of the Senior class of Bayside Academy for their impressive accomplishments and look forward to seeing the great success they achieve in the future.

Our event coverage includes some of the biggest events of the year: Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook Off, Fairhope Girls Night Out, and the return of Celebrate Life to name a few. We are honored to feature one of the most dedicated servant leaders in our community, Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack, alongside some other remarkable people included in this issue’s editorial pieces.

Born and raised in Alabama, Huey Hoss Mack has spent almost his entire life in Baldwin County—creating personal ties that inspired a career of service to the community he grew up loving.

It was his grandfather’s murder in Escambia County in 1982, however, that directed his path of service. Three years later, in 1985, Mack began a career in law enforcement with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences as a crime scene investigator and analyst. “Because of my grandfather, I wanted to work in the field to assist those who have experienced similar tragedies and are the victims of crime,” says Mack.

In 1989, Mack transferred to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office as a Criminal Investigator, working crime scenes. He was promoted to lieutenant over the Criminal Investigation Division in 1995 and reached the rank of captain in 2004, at which time he became chief investigator of the Criminal Investigation Division. He also served task forces including the U.S. Customs Blue Lighting Task Force, the Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force and the Child Abuse Task Force, in addition to serving as a consultant with many other law enforcement agencies and a U.S. Marshall Special Deputy. He ran for the office of Baldwin County Sheriff in 2006 and was elected to his first term. He is currently serving his fifth term as Baldwin County Sheriff.

Over his last 18 years in office, Sheriff “Hoss” Mack has proven his integrity, dedication and devotion to the community that elected him. “I've been fortunate to work with a great team with the sheriff's office, and we have had many accomplishments during my time as sheriff— the greatest being what we’ve done for the county’s children,” he notes, referring to the school resource officer program, which put a school resource officer in every public school, and the establishment of Camp Shining Star.

Naturally, in a community that has seen growth of the kind that Baldwin County has experienced over the last two decades, there have been challenges that Sheriff Mack has had to contend with and overcome. “On balance, our greatest challenge at the sheriff's office has been and continues to be keeping up with the ongoing growth of Baldwin County,” he says. “When I first came to work in law enforcement, there were approximately 76,000 people in Baldwin County. Today, we have over 260,000.”

Continually serving his community, Sheriff Mack has held office in the Robertsdale Rotary Club as well as the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, and he has sat on the boards of the Baldwin County Economic Alliance and Boy Scouts of America. He has also been recognized for his service with a number of awards. “I have always placed service above self in my career and my life,” he says. “My goal is to keep serving the citizens of Baldwin County as long as I am able.”

Ladies filled the streets of downtown Fairhope for the 10th Annual Girl’s Night Out. Always held on the Thursday prior to Mother’s Day, this event gives participants the opportunity to shop ‘til they drop at participating merchants which remain open late to support the event. Many merchants also offered discounts and held giveaways. This event is a collaboration between Downtown Fairhope Merchant Association and The City of Fairhope.

Matt Yawn & Trey Simms

For Matt Yawn and Trey Simms coaching the boys on the Daphne Middle School soccer team is about much more than the score of the game. Matt has always believed that being a good father and mentor means more than just providing for his family. It's about building relationships, teaching values, and being a constant source of support. As an Insurance Broker at Bass Underwriters for over 20 years, he has seen firsthand how vital relationships are in both his professional and personal life.

Matt's wife, Jill, and their two children, Parker and Keira, bring immense joy and purpose to his life. Parker, an avid fisherman and soccer player, and Keira, a creative soul who loves nature, are his pride and joy. "My kids know they can tell me anything, at any time, and not be judged," Matt explains. "I want them to always feel supported and loved, and to know that the only limitations in life are the ones that they allow."

Matt's dedication to his family extends into his role as a coach for young athletes. He sees coaching as a way to instill the values of selflessness and teamwork in the next generation. "The world is a different place than when I was a kid," Matt observes. "Young people are surrounded by professional athletes and influencers who self-glorify for 'likes' and attention. But the core tenants of team sports have remained consistent. A true team requires service before self."

Matt's coaching partner, Trey, shares his dedication. Trey, an Emergency Medicine Physician, balances his hectic work life with his commitment to mentoring young athletes. His children, Sonny and Margot, and his wife Nicole are the heart of life. Sonny, a ninth grader, has been on the DMS soccer team for the past two years. 12-year-old Margot loves dance and public speaking, regularly appearing on the school morning broadcast.

Trey enjoys how fun it is for the boys to be out there on the field, trying hard. "You can see the pride they take in representing their school. There is so much more than winning and losing that happens out there."

Through their efforts, Matt and Trey are not only developing skilled soccer players but also helping shape responsible, compassionate young men. Matt's children, Parker and Keira, see the impact of their father's work and benefit from the values he ingrains in his players and them. Whether it is Keira volunteering with younger kids at church or Parker showing empathy towards someone in need, Matt's influence is evident.

For Trey, it is important that his children remember being genuinely loved. Even if it's doing homework, being stuck at the airport, or just laying around the house, he feels blessed that he and his children always enjoy being together. Matt and Trey strive each day to teach their children and the boys they coach to make the most out of each opportunity, looking at all situations for an opportunity for growth.

How did your background prepare you for owning your business?

Paige: The combination of my experience in banking, accounting, and inventory management coupled with the knowledge of textiles and manufacturing Les possesses, makes us a great team.

Southern View Media and Pelican Promos recently hosted the Eastern Shore Business Expo at Fairhope Civic Center. The event showcases both local and regional companies, offering the business community, from small business entrepreneurs to executives, an opportunity to network with local professionals, engage with other exhibitors and discover resources for business growth. The public was also invited to attend free of charge to meet the vendors and learn more about their products and services.

Eastern Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours for May was held at Alabama Credit Union in Fairhope. This monthly event brings members together in a casual setting for networking accompanied by refreshing beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Catering was provided by Andree’s, and the Tap Truck was onsite. The event also included live music by Wes Loper.

Fred Pierce is part of a multi-generational family of Fairhope residents and farmers. His father and grandfather were veterans who taught him the importance of discipline and reliability. He enjoys gardening, livestock, and now hopefully, beekeeping. He lives on the family farm with his wife and two daughters.

How did your background prepare you for owning your business?ea?

Growing up on a family farm taught me the importance of a strong work ethic and how to be a good steward of God’s creations. We learned to be in tune with nature and the effects of your footprint. Farm life taught me how to be organized, solve problems and prepare for the unexpected.

It’s not just a motto on our letterhead. It is a culture within the company. We recognize that the quality of what we do today truly determines what the future of our company will be.

That based on the level of professionalism they experienced they can confidently refer their friends, family, and clients knowing that their needs will be met with honesty, integrity, and competence.

What are your plans for the future of the business?

There is constant change in the HVAC Industry. Last year we saw new efficiency rating standards, and this year the EPA is mandating new refrigerants in the market. To ensure that our industry leading staff stays abreast of the current and future changes, we will continue our unwavering commitment to training.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Eastern Shore Community?

When Climate Masters was founded in 1967 Spanish Fort was not a city, Daphne had 2 police officers that shared one car, and Fairhope was a small artistic farming town. Rapid growth has contributed to many changes, but the Eastern shore is still one of the finest places I can think of to raise a family and own a business. We are so thankful to this community for supporting our company for almost 60 years.

Preserving Wonder PROTECTING TOMORROW

Wehumans often only consider how the impact that the change and growth of our cities will make our lives more or less convenient and how it might benefit us. But what of the ecological impact that is a natural consequence of “progress” and its displacement of so much natural wildlife?

It was this question—and the desire to take protective measures that led Skipper Tonsmeire, an ecologicallyminded local businessmen, and his friend John Borom, an avid birder and college administrator, to take action in the 1970s to preserve what is now known as the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Two decades later in 1990, the two men led the creation of the non-profit Weeks Bay Foundation, which ultimately became the South Alabama Land Trust (SALT) in 2020. During those 40-odd years, and even now, the focus has expanded along with the scope of the organization’s mission.

“Skipper and John’s original focus was preserving the land that is now protected by the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve,” says Executive Director Jane Herndon. “The mission expanded organically over time to include the protection of other lands in Mobile and Baldwin Counties that had high conservation value but that were under threat of development. Witnessing firsthand the adverse impacts of imprudent development on native habitats and water quality, they knew that land conservation would continue to be a valuable tool to protect the environment in this region.

“Every acre of land that SALT protects means more protected habitat for the plants and animals that make the Gulf Coast special,” Herndon goes on. “It also means cleaner water, preservation of the scenic beauty of this region and more places to get outside and connect with nature. And our organization serves a key role in educating the public about our fragile coastal environment.”

As a non-profit, SALT relies on funding from the donations of generous individuals as well as that of local businesses, members and from fundraisers. The organization additionally receives grant funding from a variety of government agencies, businesses, and private foundations.

In the midst of constant changes to the local landscape across South Alabama, challenges continue. “Rising real estate prices in this rapidly growing region makes it a challenge for SALT to acquire more land for conservation,” says Herndon. “Even land with low development potential due to the presence of wetlands is getting expensive, but we are using all available resources to identify land of high conservation value and to put together the funding to acquire more land. We are also tasked with raising community awareness of the urgent need for land conservation and how protecting land is part of smart land use planning.”

The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast hosted by Eastern Shore Chamber is held annually on the National Day of Prayer. Business leaders, other elected officials, and members of the community joined the mayors of Daphne, Fairhope and Spanish Fort at Daphne Civic Center for an inspirational and uplifting breakfast. Keynote speaker, award winning writer Lynn Oldshue, shared her mission to tell the stories of people she meets to give inspiration and hope in a crazy world.

How did your background prepare you for owning Point Clear Studio?

I have been in the medical field for over 10 years as a physician assistant. During my time at the Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center at USA, I spent a lot of time working on the facial regions of the skin. I have always enjoyed helping others with their health concerns, and I loved using my hands while working in surgery. Becoming a permanent makeup artist allows me to use my hands to give a desired outcome that provides confidence and restores natural facial features.

What makes Point Clear Studio unique to this area? Our medical micropigmentation services are a restorative treatment for women who have undergone a

mastectomy following breast cancer. We are currently one of the only offices on the Eastern Shore providing 2D/3D areola tattooing.

What do you hope clients have to say about a visit to Point Clear Studio? That we truly care about their needs and spend quality time with them at each visit. We hope they appreciate that we carefully follow up to make sure they have the best outcomes.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Eastern Shore Community? Our family has lived in Fairhope for 10 years. I am incredibly thankful for our community and the friendships. I love going into a store downtown and seeing people I know. Watching the beautiful sunsets down by the bay will never grow old.

What makes it special is that we are a family run restaurant named after Joe’s mother Viola. It’s also very special to work as a father daughter team.

What do you love most about a career in the restaurant industry?

We love people! Making friendships with our customers and employees while we are making and serving great food is a blessing.

Eastern Shore Republican Women gathered for their monthly lunch meeting, held the second Thursday of each month at Fairhope Yacht Club. Speakers for the month of May were Chair of Alabama’s Republican Party John Wahl and the Republican nominee for Alabama 2nd Congressional District Caroleene Dobson. Local nonprofit Flourish shared how the community can support their mission of equipping and empowering teen girls.

Guests of Derby Dayz hosted by Kidz Eatz were treated to food and beverages inspired by the Kentucky Derby while enjoying the race, a chance to win great prizes, and music. The event which was held at Oak Hollow Farm also included a hat contest and photo opportunities with a live horse. Kidz Eatz is a nonprofit with a mission to provide weekend food and other supplies such as clothes and shoes to children in need attending Baldwin County schools.

Thousands of people gathered in downtown Fairhope to enjoy great food, beverages, music, and fellowship at Fairhope Rotary Club’s annual Steak Cook Off. 35 teams prepared great steaks donated by Premiere Sponsor Piggly Wiggly for everyone to sample.

Attendees had the difficult task of selecting just one team for which to cast their vote for the People’s Choice award. Nearly $140,000 was raised, and those funds will be used for meaningful initiatives that will positively impact the people of Fairhope.

COLD CUCUMBER SOUP

INGREDIENTS :

2 (3/4) pounds cucumber (about 5 cucumbers 7 to 8” long)

1/2 teaspoon salt

6 green onions, chopped (white and green parts)

1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

1 teaspoon dry dill

4 cups buttermilk

2 cups sour cream

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper

Peel cucumbers. Cut in half lengthwise. Scoop out seeds. Place cucumber shells on a paper towel; sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon salt evenly over both sides of all the cucumber. Let stand 30 minutes. Drain well. Coarsely chop. Put the cucumber in the food processor with all remaining ingredients. Process until smooth. Cover and chill. Serve garnished with a thinly sliced piece of cucumber (don’t peel).

Tournament action for Mobile Big Game Fishing Club’s Gulf Coast Masters was preceded by a great party that included dinner, drinks, and live music by the River Dan Band. Representatives from the Emeril Legasse Foundation joined in the fun to share their organization’s mission. MBGFC partners with the foundation to raise funds that are used to create opportunities to inspire, mentor, and enable youth to reach their full potential.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design Hannah has worked as a freelancer, in house graphic designer, art director, illustrator, and most recently, she started her own business as a muralist. Her work is characterized by strong color and line work, and it is often inspired by nature. When it comes to painting murals, she believes public art can be very impactful on people and communities. Hannah is responsible for murals in Fairhope's recently unveiled Arts Alley in the heart of downtown.

Carleigh+ Aaron

Thewedding of Carleigh Rae Searcy and Aaron Stephen Tillman was a heartwarming celebration of a love that blossomed over years of friendship and shared moments. Surrounded by family and friends, their ceremony at Hatcher Farms Venue was nothing short of magical, with the weather perfectly mirroring the joy and warmth of the occasion.

Carleigh, a dental assistant at Alabama Family Dental, and Aaron, a plant operator at UOP Honeywell, first crossed paths at Faith Academy in 2015. Their friendship endured through high school, even after Carleigh gently declined Aaron’s prom invitation. After graduation, their bond grew stronger during trips to Auburn to visit friends and enjoy football games. With every trip, Carleigh found herself more drawn to Aaron’s easygoing nature, shared interests, and the undeniable chemistry.

In October 2021, Aaron bravely confessed his feelings, leading to their first official date. A month later, on November 23, 2021, Aaron asked Carleigh to be his girlfriend, marking the beginning of a beautiful chapter in their lives. Exactly one year later, Aaron planned a surprise proposal that Carleigh would cherish forever.

On their first anniversary, Aaron took Carleigh to The Grand Hotel, planning to celebrate with a sunset dinner. Carleigh had mentioned wanting professional photos, and Aaron made it happen. As they posed for pictures, the photographer asked Carleigh to face the water. When she turned around, Aaron was on one knee, ring in hand. The surprise and joy on Carleigh’s face were unforgettable. Aaron had orchestrated a perfect moment, complete with their parents waiting to celebrate at Dauphin’s in downtown Mobile.

Their wedding day was a dream come true. Carleigh looked stunning in her mermaidstyle dress with a long train, damask lace, a hint of shimmer, and a strapless sweetheart neckline. The colors of sage green, beige, and white added to the elegance. A special touch was that Carleigh’s mother was her “something blue” in a beautiful light blue satin dress.

The ceremony was followed by a reception filled with love and laughter. The four-tier cake, with its strawberry and buttercream layers, white dragged icing texture, and eucalyptus accents, was a work of art. Guests were treated to delicious charcuterie cups during cocktail hour, followed by a dinner of beef tenderloin, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a salad bar. The evening ended with sliders and a sparkler send-off in a vintage 1962 Cadillac.

Carleigh and Aaron’s honeymoon in Bridgetown, Barbados at a Sandals resort was the perfect escape to start their married life. They eagerly await the completion of their new home in Grand Bay, AL, where they will build their future together.

The theme for this year’s White Linen Night was “A Night at the Beach.” Local restaurants including Sean’s Prime Dining, The Hope Farm, R Bistro and Tamara’s all donated coastal cuisine, and guests were also treated to an open bar featuring hand-selected wines and a signature margarita by the Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa. The event is one of the Eastern Shore Art Center’s largest fundraisers of the year.

Boat Show on the Bay at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park was a weekend of fun activities for the entire family. The excitement included over 100 vendors, tons of boats, live music, food trucks, a dog costume contest, and much more.
