“SPRING

ONCE AGAIN REMINDED US WHY THIS AREA IS SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE

TO LIVE, VISIT, AND SUPPORT.”

As we welcome the summer season along 30A and throughout South Walton County, we also take a moment to look back on what was truly a remarkable spring.

This issue of VIP 30A Magazine celebrates the many festivals, gatherings, and community eventsthat helped make the season so memorable. From world-class wine festivals and culinary weekends to outdoor celebrations, charity events, music, auctions, and evenings shared under the stars, spring once again reminded us why this area is such a special place to live, visit, and support.

So many of these events do more than bring people together. They raise important funds and awareness for the nonprofit organizations that serve children, families, health care, the arts, education, and other meaningful causes across our community. We are proud to recap and spotlight many of those moments in the pages ahead.

As summer settles in, the pace of nonprofit events naturally slows a bit, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the beach, the water, family vacations, and the longer days that make this season so enjoyable. Before long, the fall calendar will begin to fill again with galas, fundraisers, festivals, and community celebrations, but for now, we hope everyone takes a well-deserved breath and enjoys all that summer on the Emerald Coast has to offer.

Thank you to our readers, advertisers, event organizers, volunteers, nonprofits, and community partners who continue to make VIP 30A Magazine a part of the story. We are grateful to share these events with you and to celebrate the people and organizations that make South Walton such a vibrant and generous community.

Wishing you a fun, relaxing, and safe summer.

DESTIN CHARITY WINE AUCTION Weekend

RECORD $4 MILLION RASIED

The Destin Charity Wine Auction once again brought world-class wine, fine dining and generous giving to Grand Boulevard this April, raising a record-breaking $4 million for children in need across Northwest Florida. Presented by the Jumonville Family, the 21st annual event was held April 24-25 and served as one of the signature fundraising weekends on the Emerald Coast. The celebration began with patron dinners and related events hosted earlier in the week at private homes, restaurants and distinctive venues throughout the region, including locations from Destin to Alys Beach. Each gathering paired acclaimed vintners and culinary talent with guests in support of one of the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation’s partner charities.

The main auction was held under the tent at Grand Boulevard Sandestin Town Center, where guests enjoyed a reserve tasting, chef-prepared cuisine, silent auction offerings and an energetic live auction with renowned auctioneer Charles Antin. The auction featured rare wines, luxury travel experiences, private dinners, exclusive getaways and other one-of-a-kind lots that helped drive spirited bidding to a record $400,000 for a single item!

The weekend was also held in conjunction with the South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival, creating several days of wine, food and community-focused events at Grand Boulevard and throughout the surrounding area. Proceeds benefited DCWAF’s 16 partner children’s charities, which serve children facing health challenges, abuse, food insecurity and other needs throughout Northwest Florida. Since its founding in 2005, Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation has grown into one of the nation’s premier charity wine auction organizations, raising millions to improve the lives of local children.

Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast celebrates Primary Stroke certification and honors care teams

Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast hosted a community ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, May 28 to celebrate earning its official Primary Stroke Center Certification. Awarded by The Joint Commission, the American Heart Association, and the American Stroke Association, this advanced designation ensures Walton County families have specialized, around-the-clock stroke care close to home.

The event, coordinated alongside the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce, brought together local leaders, community members and medical personnel. The milestone is uniquely critical to the region, as data shows that nearly 5% of adults in Walton County have experienced a stroke. A rate that is higher than the Florida state average. Between 2021 and 2023 alone, nearly 650 local residents were hospitalized due to strokes.

When a patient experiences a stroke, a lack of blood flow deprives brain cells of vital oxygen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the United States. For every single minute that passes without intervention, an estimated 1.9 million brain cells are lost.

“When someone has a stroke, time is of the essence to ensure the best possible outcomes,” said Trey Abshier, president and CEO of Sacred Heart Emerald Coast. “Our team has taken important steps to provide access to life-saving care to everyone in our community and surrounding region.”

To meet these critical needs, the hospital maintains a dedicated, specialized infrastructure. This includes acute stroke teams, precise clinical protocols and advanced patient support systems designed to limit complications and maximize long-term recovery.

A core focus of today’s celebration was honoring the healthcare associates and local first responders who form the vital “chain of survival” for stroke patients.

During the ceremony, hospital leaders formally recognized a dedicated group of clinical personnel for their precision and speed in executing stroke alert protocols:

• Tracy Perk and Krisztina Matheny — Emergency Department Nursing Leaders

• Dr. Leif Skjerli — Emergency Department Physician

• Melinda Schlosser — Unit Coordinator

• Clinita Jones — CT Technologist

• Sonia Petrucci — Pharmacist

• Will Farnham — Speech Pathologist

• Shannon Knight — Physical Therapist

• Evan Huesers - Emergency Department nurse

The event also highlighted the exceptional collaborative work of local emergency medical services (EMS) teams, whose rapid evaluation and field transfers ensure patients are delivered safely and swiftly to the hospital’s specialized intervention teams.

The hospital extended its deepest gratitude to local first responders who recently demonstrated remarkable coordination during a critical stroke emergency:

South Walton Fire District:

• Firefighter/Paramedic Shawn Ramsey

• Firefighter/EMT Marcus Cabanas

Destin Fire Control District:

• Captain Firefighter/EMT Michael Anderson

• Engineer Firefighter/Paramedic Steven Eagerton

• Firefighter/EMT Fisher Morrison

Held April 23-26, the annual festival once again transformed the Town Center into one of the area’s signature spring gatherings, drawing wine lovers, food enthusiasts, visitors and locals for four days of tastings and special events.

The festival featured a lineup of premier wine and culinary experiences, including Winemakers & Shakers at Wine World Destin, Bitters, Brews & Bartenders, and the popular Saturday and Sunday Grand Tastings. Guests had the opportunity to sample wines, spirits and craft beverages while enjoying food from regional culinary partners and live entertainment throughout the weekend. Set against the backdrop of Grand Boulevard’s shops, restaurants and open-air gathering spaces, the event highlighted the relaxed elegance that makes South Walton a favorite destination. Since its founding in 2013, the festival has grown into a standout celebration of food, wine and beachside lifestyle, pairing world-class tastes with the charm of the Emerald Coast.

DOMINANCE OF CENTER CONSOLES

THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN BOATING

Twenty-five years ago, the Gulf Coast boating scene looked very different than it does today. From Panama City and Destin to Pensacola and Orange Beach, the marinas and boat ramps were once dominated by traditional family cruisers, bowriders, cuddy cabins, and stern-drive powerboats powered by automotive-style inboardoutboard engines. Boats built around comfort and overnight accommodations were the standard, while center consoles were viewed more as hardcore fishing machines than all-around family boats. My first experience with this style boat was in the late 90’s with a 17’ Cape Horn, one of only a few center consoles on Pickwick Lake back then. It was a perfect compliment to my Gibson Houseboat at the time, but was basic and simple.

Today, the story is completely different . The modern center console — powered by quiet, fuel-efficient four-stroke outboard engines — has become the dominant boat style across coastal waters. Whether cruising Crab Island in Destin, running offshore from Orange Beach, or island hopping the Panhandle, center consoles now rule the Gulf Coast boating lifestyle.

The transformation didn’t happen overnight. Over the last two decades the boating industry experienced one of its biggest shifts in history. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many recreational powerboats relied on stern-drive propulsion systems, commonly

called inboard-outboards or I/Os. These setups used marinized automobile-style V-6 and V-8 engines mounted inside the boat, paired with an outdrive extending through the transom. Popular brands like MerCruiser and Volvo Penta powered thousands of family boats across the coun-try.

At the time, cuddy cabins and deck boats were incredibly popular because boaters wanted enclosed seating, small sleeping areas, and protection from the weather. Many boats were designed more like mini cruisers than open fishing platforms. But several major changes in boating technology and consumer preferences began pushing the market in a new direction.

The biggest turning point was the rapid advancement of modern outboard engines — particularly four-stroke technology. Earlier two-stroke outboards had long carried a reputation for being loud, smoky, fuel-hungry, and sometimes unreliable. That changed dramatically beginning in the 1990s as manufacturers like Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda invested heavily in cleaner and quieter four-stroke engines. Environmental regulations also accelerated the move toward cleaner-burning technology. At the time, a close friend, David Woods, was deep in the offshore racing world while selling Fountains, MTI’s and Cigarettes all over the county. I’ll never forget him telling me at a race one weekend that the efficient and powerful four stroke outboards were going

to dramatically change the boating industry we were all in love with at the time. Of course we all questioned and debated the comment, which proved to be exactly what happened. Suddenly, outboards became smoother, more dependable, far more fuel-efficient, and easier to maintain. They also offered major advantages in saltwater environments where corrosion and maintenance had always been concerns with inboard and sterndrive systems. For Gulf Coast boaters, the benefits were hard to ignore. Outboards allowed boats to run shallower, simplified servicing, eliminated cramped engine compartments, and created more usable space onboard. Multiple-engine setups also became increasingly practical. Twin outboards became common, then triples, and eventually quad-engine center consoles entered the market, producing offshore performance once reserved for hight performance inboard V-bottoms and Cats as well as large sportfishing yachts.

AT THE SAME TIME, CENTER CONSOLE BOAT DESIGNS EVOLVED DRAMATICALLY

The center console of the 1980s and 1990s was often viewed as a stripped-down fishing boat with minimal seating and limited comfort. But manufacturers soon realized that boaters wanted versatility. Families wanted boats that could fish offshore in the morning, cruise to waterfront restaurants in the afternoon, and spend the evening anchored at a sandbar with friends. Boat builders responded by transforming center consoles into luxury multipurpose platforms.

Today’s center consoles feature plush seating, oversized hardtops, premium stereo systems, air-conditioned helm stations, fold-away seating, integrated coolers, large electronics dis-plays, freshwater systems, and even sleeping accommodations hidden inside spacious console cabins. Some larger center consoles now

rival traditional express cruisers in both price and comfort. Unlike many northern boating regions where rough weather and shorter seasons favored enclosed cabin boats, the warm climate and open coastal waters of the Gulf Coast made open-air boating ideal nearly year-round.

FISHING CULTURE ALSO PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE

To accelerate this evolution even more, offshore fishing exploded in popularity across the Gulf Coast during the last two decades. Advances in GPS, radar, digital sonar, trolling motors, and offshore electronics made it easier for recreational anglers to safely run farther offshore than ever before. Modern center consoles were perfectly suited for the growing offshore lifestyle.

MEANWHILE, BOATING ITSELF BECAME MORE LIFESTYLE-ORIENTED AND SOCIAL

Today, it is common to see 30- to 40-foot center consoles lined up at marinas throughout the Gulf Coast powered by twin, triple, or quad four-stroke outboards producing well over 1,000 combined horsepower. Boats that once would have been considered strictly tournament fishing machines are now luxury family boats used for nearly every type of coastal boating activity imaginable. The evolution of boating over the last 20 to 25 years represents more than just a change in engine technology or hull design. It reflects an entire shift in how people use boats and enjoy life on the water. And along the Gulf Coast, no boat better represents that modern boating life-style than today’s center console.

Canoe and Kayak

The 2nd Annual Freeport Boat Show held at at Shipyard Marina offered an up-close look at one of the Emerald Coast’s newest and fast-growing boating facilities. Set along Four Mile Creek, the event gave attendees a dockside view of center consoles, bay boats, and family-friendly models along with touch of beautiful sports cars. Families enjoyed on-site food trucks and live music while there were bounce houses to entertain the kids.

The show also doubled as a showcase for the Shipyard Marina itself, which has quickly become a focal point for boaters in the Freeport area. With modern forklift launching, secure rack storage, and fuel available on site, the marina is de-signed to make boating as close to “show up and go” as possible.

Its location is a major part of the appeal. Just a short run downinto the east end of Choctawhatchee Bay, giving boaters quick access to fishing grounds, bay cruising, and runs east toward 30A and Panama City or west to Destin Harbor. What stood out most during the event was the combination of new infrastructure and a tight-knit, local feel. As Freeport continues to grow, the marina—and events like this—are helping establish the area as a serious player in the Gulf Coast boating scene.

Story & photos by: Jeff Watson

The newly developed facility features roughly 80,000 square feet of dry-stack storage with capacity for around 480 boats, accommodating vessels up to about 40 feet.

6Tips for Healthier SKIN , NOW & in

THE FUTURE

Let’s face it, we’ve all seen those people who look as if they’ve spent one (or 100) too many long days basking along the beach, lounging by the pool, or navigating the water by boat searching for fish, fun or both. While that just right sun-kissed glow can be a rather attractive asset, no one wants to appear ten years older with skin like leather just to proclaim, “I live at the beach!”

1

Use Sunscreen...

Yes, I know you know that. But, do you?

Many of us have come to understand that if our skin doesn’t look healthy, in many ways, we don’t look healthy. Even more importantly than appearance; however, is simply protecting our skin, so as to ward off the C word and other health issues associated with sun damage. The truth is, most of the damage manifested in skin problems isn’t due to what you do today, as much as is it what you did 10, 15, or 25 years ago.

2 Use the right

Most of us have been lectured about sunscreen until someone was blue in the face. Yet, strangely, we still get red because we don’t always use it. Go figure. By now we’ve all read a lot of conflicting information on good and bad sunscreen use, along with what strength to use and what those numbers do and don’t “really” mean. The bottom line is, while using good sunscreen is great, using anything is likely better than using nothing at all –especially on those days in the direct sun for hours. You should apply sunscreen almost religiously whenever you’re outside for over an hour, and you should definitely be reapplying every two hours when you’re at the beach, pool, or just working in the yard for many hours in a day. All sunscreens are formulated and manufactured to protect wearers against UVB rays, which are the primary cause of sunburns, sun damage, and most skin cancers, however UVA rays –which we seem to hear less about—are also causes of wrinkles, sunspots, skin cancers, and overall premature and unattractive aging of the skin. Because you need to protect yourself against both types of these sun derived culprits, most dermatologist recommend that their patients (and the rest of us sun lovers too) procure a good SPF 50, or higher, broad-spectrum sunscreen. It’s also worth noting --especially for beach or pool days—that a water-resistant formula is good to have around. Be prepared to reapply after taking a dip in the gulf or pool though, as not even the best brands will stay on through multiple splashes and swims.

soaps and cleansers for YOUR skin

One of the best things you can do to protect your skin -particularly your facefrom sun damage is to take care of your skin in other ways too. For starters this means using the right soaps and cleansers for your skin type, and the climate, and even season. For instance, most dermatologist will tell you that one of the best soaps for your face and skin is simply good old fashion white Dove. Yep, even better across the majority of skin types than expensive brand name cleansers that cost ten to twenty times the investment in that one bar of Dove. In general, you’ll want to stay away from heavy oil based cleaners and use those formulated for your specific skin type, most of which tend to be in foam pump form or light creams. The same goes for easing up on heavy astringents that are often alcohol based and tend to dry out skin… exactly what you don’t want before exposing yourself to lots of sunlight. If you really pay attention to the ingredients in products you use it will become clear that a lot of it is common sense based. In other words, it may be dermatology, but it isn’t rocket science to understand you want to keep your skin moisturized.

However, it’s never too late to start putting more emphasis on skin health, and following these simple suggestions can certainly make for a positive difference, both now and in the future.

3 Hydrate your body to hydrate your skin

We all hear so much about drinking enough water, and the importance of staying hydrated, but the simple truth is… well, it is a simple truth. Most all of us (somewhat dependent on body size and composition) need to get a minimum of 60 to 150 ounces of water per day. And, most people don’t do this. Back to the simple common sense aspect of skin care: if your entire body is dehydrated then your skin is too. What I’ve found that works is simply keeping a 12 to 20 ounce glass bottle of cool purified water in the refrigerator (at home, work, or a cooler in your car) and making yourself chug it the number of times a day to get the amount you need. The general rule is ½ to 1 ounce of water daily, for every pound of body weight, with the variation in ounces being based largely on how much you are using or losing in various activities and climate conditions.

4 Watch alcohol content when outdoors in the sun and heat

I’m not going to lie. I like a big cold beer (or five) as much as anyone I know. However, I think we’ve all established that alcohol is a dehydrant. So, if you have a tendency, like me, to load up a cooler of your favorite libations when heading out for a day on the sand or water just make sure you remember to slam those 60 to 150 ounces of water you need in between the other tastier drinks. It’s also a good idea to limit daily drinking to a few drinks a day… okay, until the weekend if you must. I’m not telling you what to do or how to live your life. However, we’ve all seen that guy who drinks a six pack a night five days a week and then a case or fifth on weekends, and how does he look? Not the best skin, right? And probably a good 15 years older. Yeah, not good for your skin… see how easy this is?

5 Get your nutrients... Inside and out

Remember that whole, “you are what you eat” adage? Well, somewhat unfortunately, it’s mostly true! A whole lot of things aren’t particularly good for you, so lets skip that list and just go to what is specifically good for your skin, when it comes to what you eat. Think vitamin C rich foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in polyphenols and beta-carotene. Things like soybeans, nuts and seeds, oily fish, and even coffee can be helpful in keeping healthy glowing skin from the inside out.

As for giving your skin -especially your face- a dose of nutrients, you can’t go wrong by using a good vitamin C serum to help nourish your skin and keep that youthful glow all year long. Vitamin C also goes a long way in helping your skin heal after sun damage, as well as, lightening sun spots that were caused by too much sun exposure.

6 Cover Up!

While it may seem almost too rudimentary to even mention, wearing a hat, neck cover, and even a long sleeve shirt with built-in sun protection can go a long way in allowing you to stay outdoors longer, while still protecting your skin from too much sun. Look for shirts that state a particular level of sun protection, but also be aware that simply carrying along a light-weight white cotton button up or long sleeve tee is a smart move when heading out for a day at the beach or hours on the boat. The same goes for investing in the right sunglasses as a precaution against eye damage, and damage to the tinder skin around your eyes, that often can be protected by the sunglasses also. While any shades are better than none, it’s best to choose sunglasses with polarized lenses.

ACT V

Soirée on the Bay Act V brought an elegant weekend of food, wine, music and community giving to the beautiful, bayfront Dugas Estate in Santa Rosa Beach this spring. Held March 13-14, the two-day event benefited Children’s Volunteer Health Network, supporting its mission of helping provide access to dental and health care for children in need.

Set along the Choctawhatchee Bay, the event opened Friday evening with an intimate VIP gathering featuring exceptional wines, waterfront hospitality and an exclusive auction. Guests gathered in support of Children’s Volunteer Health Network while enjoying a refined evening centered on generosity and community impact. Saturday continued with a relaxed coastal atmosphere, including games on the lawn, music, wine tasting, bubbles, lite bites and bocce, followed by the main event with a grand tasting and dancing on the lawn. The weekend also included the Cannon Club tradition, where the cannon is fired as part of the celebration.

Hosted by the Dugas family, Soirée on the Bay has quickly become a highly anticipated spring social event bringing supporters together to help create brighter futures for local children.

Masters week came to South Walton this spring as guests gathered for the third annual A Walk Down Magnolia Lane at the WaterColor LakeHouse in Santa Rosa Beach. Inspired by the tradition and excitement of Augusta National, the golf-themed evening blended Southern style, friendly competition and community generosity. Held Wednesday, April 8, the event benefited Embrace Florida Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides homes, healing and hope for vulnerable children and families across Northwest Florida. Guests dressed in golf-inspired spring attire and enjoyed cocktails, tournament-style food, live music and a silent auction.

The evening also featured putting, closest-to-the-pin and long-drive challenges, along with a golf simulator, hole-in-one competition and a Live Calcutta tied to Masters tournament players. The activities brought together both serious golf fans and casual participants in a fun, festive setting. Beyond the Masters-inspired atmosphere, the heart of the event was its mission. Proceeds supported Embrace Florida Kids and its work with children and families throughout the Florida Panhandle. With its mix of golf tradition, local fellowship and charitable purpose, A Walk Down Magnolia Lane has quickly become a favorite spring event in WaterColor.
