Chairman’s Report May 2018:
The National Easter Rallies are not being supported as well as they have been in the past. Brendda and I attended this year’s Easter Rally in Cambridge and enjoyed a relaxed weekend of great motoring weather. While the traffic on Good Friday is horrendous, the backroads generally seem comparatively empty. Heading down, we left the motorway at Drury and drove down through Tuakau and Waingaro coming out on the Raglan road. We crossed to Ohaupo and then over to Cambridge. It was quite an easy and enjoyable run down. The rally itself was low-key with just 5 silent checks in the morning and 3 in the afternoon – and no questions. They did have a timed section though. The route took us from Cambridge over to Hobbiton and Matamata. After lunch at Tatuanui we had a brief walking tour of the “cows” in Morrinsville before heading back to Cambridge. On Sunday, a tour of the villas of Cambridge was followed by lunch and a relaxed afternoon at the Hamilton Gardens. We took the backroads to Miranda on Easter Monday and after a soak in the pools headed home Tuesday around the coast road, which currently is seriously damaged in several places. While it seems that we’ve had an extended summer and great weather, it hasn’t always been good for the mid-week picnics. The picnic at Tawharanui was not well supported by club members. Cleaning went well in April though with seven members turning up. Several of our members participated in the North Shore Club’s Northern Raid on 22 April. There were a few challenging aspects to the competitive run which centred on Greenhithe and Herald Island with a run back to the clubrooms through Riverhead. After lunch we visited a workshop in Stillwater where authentic reproduction Alfa Romeo 8c Monzas are built to order from scratch. The second visit was to see a collection of vintage radios, telephones and communications equipment. This year’s Triple Combined Rally is being run on Sunday 20 May, starting from the North Shore Clubrooms and ending at ours. This year, the North Island Model A Ford Club have been invited to join us. This is an enjoyable event with three different styles of rally on the one day. No entry fee and BYO lunch. We will provide afternoon tea so a little home baking to share would be welcomed. With this newsletter you should find the entry form for the 2018 Winter Woollies Wander. The route has been set and checked and everything is running to schedule. Due to the start being at Matakohe this year, the rally will start half-an-hour later than normal. Payment of entry fees by internet banking, if possible, is preferred as cheques now attract a clearance fee of $1.00 each. Our Annual General Meeting is being held on 17 May at 7.00 p.m. at the clubrooms. Supper will be served following the meeting and ahead of the committee meeting that follows. Please give consideration to joining the committee. Some new blood and fresh ideas would be welcomed. After nine year in these roles, neither Brendda nor I will accept nomination this year so a new chairman and secretary need to be found. Happy motoring Leon brendda@xtra.co.nz

Club Captain’s Report. Firstly I hope you all enjoyed the Twilight Run. This was run after daylight saving had finished so what do you think for the future? Now, looking to the future: Franz has organised the Winter programme for Midweek cafes, it was in the April Newsletter Unfortunately the Waipu Golf club has had to be changed so please see the notice in this Newsletter. We have had disappointing numbers this summer for the picnics, is there a reason? What are your views? Let Franz know what you like and what isn’t working. Do we just need to remind you? May is our Triple Combined Rally, moved because of the Daffodil Rally that has now taken August. May 20th starting at 10.00 for first car away at 10.30. from the North Shore Clubrooms. BYO picnic lunch and any other sustenance you need on the way. There will be suitable toilet stops. It will finish at our clubrooms for afternoon tea and the results. This has not been well supported in the past, I hope we do better this year. The organisation of the Winter Woollies Wander and the Daffodil Rally are well in hand. Please look for the registration form and requests for help. Thank you. John Duffy has been polishing up our replacement trophy for the first of our club members in the Winter Woollies.
