Well, I started the month with a short stay in Hospital and the rest of the week off work before heading off to attend the VCC AGM in Napier on the first weekend. Did you know that there are just short of 8,500 members in the VCC, but there were only about 80 that attended the AGM As you will have realised by now the subs have been increased by $5. This was voted on by the Executive, and the reasons given were to meet the proposed budget requirements, including the addition of part time administrative assistance for the Secretary and to maintain a possible financial status instead of eating into cash reserves to maintain the club. There were only 4 branch delegates that voted against the increase. There was also discussion and a vote on procedures for the technical committee. The procedures that have used in the past have now been documented as being the official procedures. The dinner was a good night with a bit of local entertainment and an auction of Cup Cakes supplied by Diane White, the proceeds of which were the start of the Daffodil Rally fund. As the Hawkes Bay branch hosted the meeting and dinner and conducted the Auction, they thought that they might get to keep the proceeds, or at least some of them - WRONG! We also had a visit from Mitsi Stig (guess who that was) A report was presented on the planning for the next National Rally. This looks to be a good event in the Taranaki area, and will come in within Budget. They have some good people with the sole purpose of focusing on monitoring the budget. I did not attend the tours on the Sunday as I really wanted to get back home to prepare for the first day back to work (in Auckland). I Missed the Daffodil Rally due to other commitments including a terminally ill close friend, so I hope that everything went to plan for Roger and the team, and wish to thank everyone that helped. If you missed out attending our "rally for cancer", you missed out on a really great day for a good cause. We had a wide variety of cars and owners turn up from our club and others, even the weather cooperated. Roger & Dianne did a brilliant job of putting this event together for us and all the effort has been rewarded with a large sum to be donated to the Cancer society.

Coming up for September is Toms Tour and Upper Hutt’s’ spring festival, followed by the Twilight run.

In October we combine with the Wairarapa branch to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They started off as an "offshoot" of our branch so it seems only right to support them.

Planning is in hand for the November rally, our 61st running of this rally and our 60th Birthday.

A bit further off but getting closer, is the January Club Captains safari. Once again we will attend the Whanganui vintage weekend (Wellington Anniversary weekend) Book your accommodation soon, as it seems to be filling up quickly. Regards Neale

The putting together of this months Motoring Spirit has been a bit of a challenge, to say the least. I have been touring around the Kaipara, Hokianga , and Cape Reinga area and finding wifi has been fun, standing beside a pole, balancing on one leg and holding the laptop up in the air can be perilous in old age!! I am currently sitting in a Motel overlooking the beautiful Mangonui Bay, finishing off the last of the reports, ready to send to the Print Shop, so that you can receive your magazine, hopefully on time. I obviously missed a great Daffodil Day, but from the photos and stories that have been sent in, it seemed everybody had fun. I will do a feature next month. Selwyn

The archive would like a copy of a DVD produced by PROVID Ltd, of our 50th Anniversary Rally of 7th November 2007. We have a promotional copy that is over- written with PROVID logo. We also have a copy of the Upper Hutt part of this event, produced by "bennerp". Thank you to David Wilkens for the donation of International Rally documents.

Archiving of posters and a large donation of photographs from Stan Garmonsway, is about to get underway. I am currently putting together three photo frames of events of past years, to be hung on the Club Room wall, very soon.

Having heard that the Peter Jackson WW1 Display at Buckle Street Wellington, was to be dismantled in the near future and there was a new display of film interviews with descendants of people who took part in the First World War, I thought it was a good last chance to have a look at the spectacular displays. Obviously a record number of people in the club and intending members also agreed. For those who wanted to meet in the Hutt Valley, we started at Janus Bakery, Lower Hutt, for coffee and a bite. Others had opted to simply meet up at the Buckle Street display at 12.15pm. I obtained a gold card discount for all members attending, which meant the cost was reduced from $25 to $19 per head. This gave us a guided tour which took about 30-40 minutes. You could have had the extra tour of the trench experience, however I don't believe anybody took advantage of that option. At the end of the tour, coffee and biscuits were available at Buckle Street but there were other cafes available within walking distance. All in all, a great turn out (in spite of not hearing from something like 280 other members) and an enjoyable day. The attendance was the largest for some time, with 22 participants. Meeting Monday August 27th 16 members attended the meeting including newcomers John Pace and Alan Burgess. Past Events. Motorcycle Show Manawatu Classic Club 28-29 July: Several members attended this. Wellington VCC Daffodil Day 26th August: Only two bikes turned out for this, Ivan Gardiner on his Triumph Tigress and Richard Caldwell on his Indian Prince, but other motorcyclists were there with cars and marshalled. There was an excellent turnout from many clubs and groups for this inaugural event with some 140 cars on display. Coming Events. Taranaki Rubber Duckie, 15-16th September: Trevor has booked a unit at Top 10 and motel units at Turangi and Waipukurau. A three day tour route has been planned. Graeme Reilly (BSA Club) is joining us. Wairarapa 50th Celebration Rally 12th-14th October: Routes have been planned suitable for motorcycles. Auckland Motorcycle Rally 16-18th November: Graeme Crawley has provided info., but the entry form is not yet available. The rally is based at Orewa Surf Club, north of Auckland. Dennis Palmer, John Neill, Paul Switzer, Peter Simpson and Trevor Barnes will attend. Trevor will sort accommodation bookings and route. Peter will trailer his bike, the rest will ride. Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial 24-25th November: The date has been confirmed by the Wairarapa Branch. No entry form available yet. Christmas Ride Friday 14th December: Aaron is organising a run to Stonehenge (Wairarapa not UK), starting at Brown Owl Corner, Upper Hutt at 10:00. Brunch is at the Corner Café, Greytown before riding to Stonehenge for a guided tour. Aarons North Island Tour 16th-20th March 2019: Aaron advised he will need a $150 deposit to cover booking costs to be paid by the January Club Night, so plan to pay by December. National Motorcycle Rally, Blenheim 15-17 February 2019, plus tours 18-22nd. Only four riders indicated they were going to the rally. Other Business. Peter Simpson spoke briefly on his motorcycle adventure in India. He will give a presentation at a club night – date to be arranged. NATIONAL DAFFODIL DAY 2018

Our Colonial Cup Rally was delayed because of the NZ Vintage Car Club’s National Daffodil Day on Sunday 26th August, held at Queen Elizabeth Park. Judging for best newly restored vehicle for the Colonial Cup, was held the day before, and awarded to David Howard for his 1920s Packard Coupe, at the display the next day. In spite of the confusion of road cones around McKay’s Crossing, due to the Transmission Gully road works, and a cloudy start to the day, we had a great turn out of some 150 cars, our vehicles being joined by single make car clubs and non-members. Former members also added their cars to the display. One of them was Chris Butler, a former WVCC Club Captain, who had brought his 1955 Borgward Hansa 1500, the oldest in New Zealand. One of the visitors was an enthusiast from Te Awamutu who travelled 428 k and left home at 5.30am, to see our display before catching the Cook Strait Ferry in the evening. He was

sure it was worth the early rise because of the range of vehicles in age from the 1920s to the 1980s, and the types of vehicles from tourers, roadsters, coupes and sedans, sports cars, army vehicles and commercial trucks. There was a poll of the people for the best car, which was won by a beautiful 1952 Citroen from the Citroen Car Club (sorry I don’t have the owner’s name). My vote went to the little red Triumph TR2 sports car as was Ray Betteridge’s, but the Citroen was indeed a beautiful car.

The Wellington Tramways Museum provided rides throughout the day, adding to the activities for visitors, together with pony rides for the children. The Aeroplane Club flew a couple of early planes over the venue. There was a Sausage Sizzle and a coffee caravan to feed the masses, but the highlight was over 200 beautiful cupcakes topped with icing daffodils, made by our Rally Secretary, Diane White, and not surprisingly, sold out. Everyone was asked for a minimum donation of $5 for the Cancer Society, and we collected

over $4,000 Congratulations to Roger and Diane White and their team for a very successful day.

AUGUST CLUB NIGHT The Scorpion Tank restoration.

This months speaker was Phil McCloy, who entertained us with the story of his ongoing restoration of his Scorpion Tank — yes, that’s right, a tank! He asks himself why and says he has always had an interest in Military history, especially aircraft and vehicles. Also a colleague of his Fathers had restored vehicles, several of which are in the Waiouru Museum. He also puts it down partly to a mid life crisis and a challenge to actually complete a restoration. Why this vehicle? Phil said that it sounded reasonably easy for a low skill set., parts were still readily available and local knowledge was still out there, it was able to be driven on the road and not too heavy to transport. It was also a vehicle that has a history with New Zealand, as the Army operated 26 Scorpions between 1982 and 2000. This particular Scorpion was located through International Web sites and historic Military Vehicle Forums and was also inspected in the UK by reliable people. Once purchased, the vehicle was relatively easy to get shipped, using a local freight agent. It also required a Police permit because of the gun. There was also a lot of time management and paperwork. On arrival in NZ ,it was as expected, with everything seized, that could be seized, like brakes, gearbox shafts and wheel hubs. The periscopes had been stolen by a previous owner but that has been rectified. Getting additional parts out of the UK can be slow and painful with suppliers promising the earth but not actually delivering. Phil has discovered learning points along the way, which will be familiar to all of us, and that is to take lots of photos and keep notes, as it could be months before a part goes back again. Balance a project with family life and let it be a joy rather than a burden. If all else fails, time and money fixes everything!! Thanks Phil, for an interesting night.

Fee free to take a book, making a note of it, or bring along a book to donate or swap. If you haven't visited the library for a while, you may be surprised at the amount of new material that has found its way onto the shelves.

August Kapiti Mid Week Run

Twenty seven enthusiasts enjoyed good food and conversation at the Chocolate Fish, Shelly Bay, before travelling on to the Time Cinema at Lyall bay to watch “ Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines,” a wonderful, old, hilarious slapstick film. Alison and I have bought a motorhome and next year we are going to do a lot of travelling around New Zealand to all the places we have never been to and some of those that we have, but would like to see again. So we are getting rid of all the things that in the past we have had to rush home for, one of them sadly is organising the Mid-week run, so we desperately need one or two people to take it over from the beginning of next year. We have enjoyed our two years in the job, and have been very grateful for the support and encouragement that we have received. We would like to say thank you to those people who have come up with ideas on where we could go for visits and to those who helped out when we have been indisposed. The Irishman’s—A trip above and beyond! As told by Hilary and Barry Pettengell

On the 29th May 2018, Hilary, Barry and Percy (A.K.A. Chrysler Finer 70 1926), set off on an adventure. Barry had noted on his bucket list years ago, to do the Irishman's Creek Rally from Oamaru to Fairlie. We crossed the Straits on storm tossed seas and headed first to Kaikoura. We were awestruck by the reality of the devastation and the repair work being done following the earthquake, a gargantuan fixing job being done by many brave people. We were told that parts of the coastline had lifted 3 to 8 metres and inland too. It was staggering. First night after a long slow trip was Kaikoura's Donegal House, a great spot, a big fire and a feast. The next day was on to Timaru, also a very long journey. Percy travels at about 45 miles an hour with many petrol stops! On the 31 st, we travelled to Oamaru to catch up with the Steam Punk people. There is a Steam Punk festival held each year with the Victorian Precinct being the headquarters. There were lots of activities going on throughout the day and night, with wonderful costuming, themed shops and heaps of food etc. all fascinating. Saturday morning early (still dark) saw us lined up at the Precinct with 163 Vintage and veteran vehicles -nothing younger than 1932, a large % being model A’s, many of them tourers in various states of seemingly disrepair. These guys are hard case larrikins- great people nonetheless, but real characters. We were given some statistics, something like 25% were Model A’s, several Chryslers, Austins, a couple of Rolls Royce, 1 big Sunbeam and many mostly Americans. Al Capone and Bonnie & Clyde would have fitted in well here. We set off at 8am in about 1degree, headed for Fairlie with no idea how we were going to get there apart from basic instructions. We bounced over farm connecting back roads up hill and down dale, across fords and paddocks, getting colder and colder (Percy has a heater but it gets so hot one could poach an egg on it), so we didn't use that, just rugged up and cosy in our blue box. Up into the high country, spectacular views, Hakataramea Pass, where we drove into the mist and hoar frost, don’t know how cold it was, but it was COLD! Quite spooky, could only see about a metre ahead, with mist filling in the spaces and icy white skeletal trees and bushes looming up out of it and dim car headlights appearing behind; another world experience. Lunch was at Kurow where we over ran the town. The queue at the only fuel station was endless. I think the whole 163 of us needed a top up. The owners of the station must have been pre warned. Amazing views after lunch of beautiful countryside, snow covered mountains and endless blue skies. Central Otago is so spectacularly gorgeous. We arrived en masse at little Fairlie at about 5pm. with very few mishaps or breakdowns. Pubs and food outlets became very busy and a few wee drams of whisky were consumed. One had to warm the “cockles of the heart" somehow.

Accommodation and restaurants were chocker. We stayed in a superb B&B just out of town, at the Galaxy Paradise. We were told about an old pub about 20ks back in Albury where we could get a good meal. The place was buzzing-great meal and really friendly people. This pub and all the other accommodation is booked out for this rally from year to year. Sunday was a morning run starting again at 8am, out to the backblocks and on to visit the gracious stately homestead and estate of the Rolleston's. Lots of history here, The homestead was built in 1837, and has been home to the family ever since. This is a beautifully maintained home and working farm. We were sent to drive across the farm and high up into the hills to their airstrip to take in the views-WOW. We all teetered around the tracks clinging onto the hillsides, with tufts of tussock grass cleaning our underneath and up to the hilltop, so high up. Can you imagine 163 old crocks grinding up there? Well most of them anyway. Later that afternoon there was a grass khana followed by a fun prize giving, Before we set out on this trip we were told to equip ourselves with towrope and chains-didn't need either fortunately but Percy, along with all the others, changed colour. Completely covered in dust and mud and quite disreputable, very little blue showing on ours. The cars proved how resilient they are. They built them good in them days!

Our Chrysler, which we restored over 7 years from '73-80, has covered most of New Zealand and has given us no significant trouble since. We've done the Molesworth and the Rainbow, climbed through the Nevis and many others and now we can add the Irishman's to Percy's bow. A real adventure combined with meeting some wonderful, warm, friendly people. A recommended trip to any vintage/veteran owner who wants an extra challenge. We covered 1000 miles and used about the same amount in fuel. Roger and Bradley White are threatening to do this next year in the De Soto. They'll have a ball! Below: Rolleston Homestead

MARLBOROUGH BRANCH 60TH ANNIVERSARY RALLY The Marlborough Branch is holding its 60th anniversary rally on the weekend of 5th to 7th October, starting with a Noggin and Natter on Friday night. On Saturday, there will be a run of 50 miles for Veterans and 90 miles for other classes, followed by an evening meal at their Clubrooms. On Sunday, breakfast will be at a local restaurant and the parts shed will be open later in the morning. There is also an opportunity to visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre , home to Warbirds of WW1 and WW2 including Sir Peter Jacksons collection.

Also, on the weekend of 21st to 23rd September the local Model “A” group are hosting International Model “A” day, with an interesting run of about 100 miles on the Saturday. The weekend will start Friday evening at the club rooms at Brayshaw Park with a Noggin and natter and meal. Saturday evening will be a meal and on Sunday, there will be a brunch. PROGRAMME Friday November 2nd, 6:30 pm: Meet and Greet at our clubrooms. Saturday November 3rd, 9:00 am: Rally briefing at the clubrooms. 9:30 am, 1st car away. For lunch, bring your own picnic and drinks. 6:30 pm. Happy Hour followed at 7:30 by Annual Dinner, prize giving and 50 year badge presentations. This year the dinner theme is “Glitz and Glamour” so come dressed up as it is our 60 th Birthday Party. Sunday November 4th, 10:30 am: Meet at clubrooms with a picnic lunch, for a visit to an interesting venue. RALLY REGULATIONS This Rally is open to all eligible vehicles as defined by the Rules of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) All vehicles must be entered by a financial member of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) and either owner or the driver shall be a member of the Club or an invited guest of the Branch for the day. Vintage Car Club membership cards must be carried and available for inspection. All traffic regulations must be complied with at all times. Consideration must be shown to other motorists by not impeding their progress. Rally participants must allow faster traffic to pass. In keeping with the spirit of the event the use of satellite navigation devices, laptop computers and cell phones with internet and GPS connectivity is discouraged. Cell phones may only be used in the event of breakdown, accident or medical emergency. Only current financial members of the Club are eligible to compete for and be awarded Club prizes or trophies. Points for the Young Navigator’s Trophy will only be awarded to family members of Wellington Branch Members. The Rally Organisers and the Wellington Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand, its members, officials or representatives will not be held liable for any loss, damage or any other adverse action that occurs in connection with this event. Once all fees are paid they will not be refunded. 17

OBITUARY

Warren Birch, a long-time member of the VCC, passed away recently. Warren made an enormous contribution to the club over his 50 years as a member and was always active at Branch level, serving in Whanganui, Wellington and latterly, Horowhenua, in many roles. Warren served the National Executive for many years in his capacity as Chairman of both Wellington and Horowhenua Branches. A Posthumous Award for 50 years service as a member, was made on 3rd of August 2018. Sincere condolences to Lorraine and family, from the many who knew Warren. He will be sadly missed. 18

Hyde Park Village is approximately 5 kms north of the end of the Expressway and the Village and Café are on the left off S.H. 1 11.45am Meet for lunch at Viv’s Kitchen, Sanson. It is located on the right of S.H. 1 and 500 metres along after turning left at the Sanson Intersection towards Bulls. 1.00 to 1.15pm Depart for Ohakea Air Base. The museum is free but we would like to charge $1.00 per head to pay for a gift for Brendon Deere who will show us around the hanger.
