CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

Our parts manager organised for the Wellington branch to attend the Manawatu branch swap meet on the first week of October. This is a good local (sort of) event where we are always made welcome. The venue was the Manfield Park arena and the indoor event was not a disappointment. As the event is held in the arena, weather is not a problem, although we didn’t get to enjoy the great warm sunny day outside, we do get well protected on the days when it rains. It is always good to take money from people other than our own members.
The following weekend was the Christchurch annual swap meet. The Bluebridge ferry left early this time, and the drive south was uneventful with patchy weather all the way. The Kaikoura road is still a construction site and will be for a while, with some areas still dirt and lots of orange cones still around (don’t we all wish we had bought shares in an Orange Cone Factory ).The stop-go people at the various one lane sections gave us a good opportunity to appreciate the work that they have put into rebuilding this road and I had to laugh at the traffic control shelters that are anchored to large concrete blocks to stop them blowing away. The narrow tunnels have been opened up a bit and reinforced and there are now great new sections of road. If these are an example of what the road will look like when it is finished, this will be a lovely drive. Brian is doing a great job with club night speakers, keeping up Ray’s tradition of variety. Rock hounds, who would have thought of collecting rocks, but it is surprising how many people have one or two or a mineral or three. Over Labour weekend I attended ‘The Constructors Car Club’ 30th anniversary dinner, smaller than a VCC annual dinner but saw 40 odd members from across New Zealand gather at the VCC club rooms for a nice meal accompanied by some very nice replicas constructed by members, one a Lamborghini Countach and the other a Jaguar D Type. Next thing to look forward to is the November Dinner; don’t forget your bling for that night. Bill

The rally committee have been very busy preparing the calendar of events for the coming year, a couple of changes here and there have been made, but not too much.
2018 will be gone very soon, which means the Monte Carlo rally to Whanganui isn't far off; have you booked your accommodation yet? Don't leave it too late as the Vintage Weekend is gaining in popularity each year. Could it become the alternative to Art Deco, who knows? Also here very soon, will be the Lake Ferry picnic. Organised by the Sunbeam Car club for over 30 years, anyone can come along with any sort of vehicle. This is one of those events that are a great way to catch up with people with similar interests, and you never know what they will bring along. Wellington VCC should be able to turn up with the greatest variety surely.
I would like you to give some consideration to coming on to the rally committee, even if only for a short time. We need your input to keep things moving along, we would especially welcome someone from the Kapiti area, as we would like to look into running a few more events up that way and a bit of local knowledge goes a long way. Another month gone! It feels like only last week since I was doing this column. Is this a reward or a punishment for getting older? Last week here in Wellington, it was Heritage week and so Lucy and I took ourselves off to the Truby King (Founder of Plunket) house and gardens in Melrose. What a hidden gem that was.
Later in the week, I did the Great War Exhibition and got a Heritage tour of the Pukeahu Mt. Cook area thrown in for free. This covered a thousand years of history and filled in a few things I didn't know. I went to Mt. Cook Primary School and later, Wellington Technical College, so already had a bit of knowledge of the area. Heritage weeks are really good value. Look out for next years. 4

Ian McCulloch had arranged for us to meet at the Mayfair CafĂŠ in Upper Hutt, prior to a visit to Golders Cottage. The day dawned cloudy but cleared and 8 cars met at the cafĂŠ. For a cuppa and a chat, before leaving about 12 30 for the cottage, where we were shown around. We all found it an interesting place. About 1.30, the tour finished and whilst some members left for home, Bob, Ian and Katrin, Tony and I went to Maidstone Park for a picnic lunch, and were joined by Keith Bramley. By 3.00pm everyone had packed up and left. Those who attended were: Ivan Gardener.

OCTOBER CLUB NIGHT . For the October club night, we were joined by Peter Fischer and other members from the Mineral Club of Hutt Valley and Wellington. Peter had set up a power point demonstration and accompanied this with an interesting and informative narrative of the clubs activities. These activities include 1 or 2 meetings every month as well as workshops for members, as they have a very well equipped workshop to enable work to be done on the minerals they find, such as cutting and polishing, or the manufacture of jewellery and suchlike. Minerals also mean rocks and so what would look like an ordinary rock to us, could very well end up being a beautifully polished item. One never knows what might be found by splitting a rock. Fossils can also be found in this way. They have field trips either local or away, to various areas where different land features can yield different rocks and minerals. Membership would appear to be quite strong, with 120 in the local club, many of them children. There would appear to be about 2000 members across New Zealand. The club is very encouraging of the younger age group and so has a junior group called GeoKids which is designed to encourage and teach the younger generation. This younger group is taught how to fossick safely and also taught how to use the machinery safely, so they can cut and polish their own finds. As the Mineral Club rooms are next door to ours, we were invited to tour after our own meeting ended. Many thanks to Peter and his team. Selwyn Warren I’m taking a risk here!

There is no report this month, on the visit to Steam Incorporated, for the “Trains Big and Small “ event, due to technical difficulties involving pen and paper, wireless transmission and various other gremlins. A source close to another source tells me that a third party is involved and has absconded with certain valuable technical data crucial to the report. The third party is being tracked as I write, and after appropriate persuasion, the report should be in the next Motoring Spirit, along with a report on the November Kapiti Run. Ed.

MARLBOROUGH VCC 60th ANNIVERSARY RALLY 6th and 7th October 2018 We planned to visit family at the end of the school holidays, so with Bruce’s enthusiasm to use the truck as much as possible, we decided to go to the Marlborough Rally the weekend before and then drive down to Christchurch to the family. We caught the ferry across Cook Strait on the Friday morning before the weekend, and went to the noggin & natter that night at their clubrooms at Brayshaw Park Historic Village in Blenheim. We met some of the locals and caught up with some Nelson members that we had met before. The ladies put on a delicious light meal, to complete the eventing. The next morning we were up early to meet at the field behind the clubrooms for a group photo before heading off towards Renwick; We zig-zagged around the countryside before heading up the Waihopai Valley, past the “Dolly Parton Spy Centre” and many vineyards. We then drove as far as an old dam that still produces electricity presumably to boost the National Grid. From there we went straight down the Waihopai Valley, stopping for morning tea at an old community hall. An example (or warning) of how instructions can be misinterpreted: one car turned off at what looked like the driveway to the community hall to be followed by a dozen others close behind. There was a very confused looking aged hippie watching as they turned around in his back yard to return to the main road and the correct turn off 200 metres down the road. After morning tea we crossed the main road from Blenheim to Murchison then the main road to Nelson. From there we followed a winding back road on the way to Picton, then to Rarangi and over a bush covered hill to Whites Bay and a DOC camping ground. It is a beautiful area with lots of spaces separated by bush and a great sandy swimming beach. After a sunny spot for lunch, we continued on. Having camped there a few years ago we can strongly recommend it. In the evening we attended a more formal but just as enjoyable dinner and because it had been a non-competitive run with no prizes, a raffle for a generous number of donated gifts was held. On Sunday there was a breakfast at a local pub but unfortunately we were travelling afield so missed it. Thanks Marlborough VCC for an interesting run. Photos next page. Claire Benge

TO FINISH FIRST My Years Inside Formula One, Can-Am & Indy 500 By Phil Kerr This book is the inside account by New Zealand born Phil Kerr, of his years working with his teenage friend, Bruce McLaren, and of working with Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme and many others during an era of exciting Motor Racing and of tragedy that so often follows this sport. The book tells the stories of three of the great teams working in the sport in the golden years of Motor Racing in the 60’s and 70’s - Cooper, McLaren and Brabham. It covers the hard times when the Kiwi drivers had to make do with odd jobs and working in backyard garages, driving long distances to get to circuits, because of course they were yet to get factory drives.
Jack, later Sir Jack, Brabham encouraged and mentored both Bruce and Phil and had a major influence on their motoring careers. Jacks career started earlier than the Kiwis career and he came to New Zealand for the 1954 Grand Prix at Ardmore. He came again the next year, and met the young Bruce and the slightly older (by 2 years) Phil and was introduced to Bruce's parents, Les and Ruth who provided Jack with a place to prepare his race car, namely the now famous McLaren service station in Remuera and so a friendship was born. I found this book to be very interesting, as I was following motor racing at this time and so was reminded of events that had happened in those years, and it also provided me with bits that I hadn’t known, or maybe did but had forgotten! Some 384 pages long, the reader is taken through the early history of “The Boys”, the World Championships won by Brabham and by Hulme. The amazing Can-Am years, known as the Bruce & Denny show. The various G.P’s in which Bruce, Denny and Jack competed and the tragic and premature death of Bruce McLaren. It also covers the changes to Formula One and the entrance of Bernie Ecclestone.
Full of colour and black & white photos which tie in with the stories, this book is a very beautiful publication which would grace any motor racing enthusiasts bookshelf and I thoroughly recommend it. Selwyn Warren 13

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
28 November 2018 “New Life For Old Parts” We will be visiting Kapiti Vapour Blasting where Nick Sparrow will demonstrate ground breaking technology in Vapour Blasting and Ultrasonic Cleaning. The property also has 2 1/2 acres of gardens to enjoy. 12 noon: Meet at Lindale Tourist Centre for lunch. Coming from the South, approximately 2 kms after the Kapiti lights, turn left at the sign “Lindale Tourist Centre”. From the North, at the roundabout to Southwards, continue and take the second exit to remain on State Highway One (the first exit is a sharp turn left). Soon after, turn off to the left signposted “Lindale Tourist Centre” and follow directions. 1.15 - 1.30pm: We will proceed to Kapiti Vapour Blasting. Directions will be given during lunch. We still need one or two people to take over the running of the monthly run as Alison and I are not organising any more after December this year. It is not an arduous task as there is no run in January and Brian Ward has offered to host a barbeque and “bonnets up” in February. We have a contact to pass on for March, and then in June, we have the mid-winter Xmas lunch. We always have a visit to the Time Cinema in August and the Xmas dinner is in December. Lunches and dinners are always well attended and if the organiser/s were stuck for something of automotive interest then another lunch meeting would be acceptable. John kinvig

The Clubrooms are also open Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00, and for Noggin & Natter Fridays from 7:00pm ($1 for biscuits, tea and coffee free) Motorcycle Meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Butcher & Brewer, 175 Jackson Street, Petone at 7:30pm.
