CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

May is upon us. The AGM is looming fast and the deadline for my addition to the Motoring Spirit has been brought forward this month. Deadline was 14 April, it’s now 05:30 Sunday morning (15th) and I don’t have a clue what to write. Real writers would call that writers block, but I have never been or ever will claim to be a writer. The last month has been eventless for me but have heard others had a good time at the gymkhana and the Sunday run. If I keep rambling like this something might come to mind. When all else fails, there is always the weather, temperatures are dropping and in the last week Auckland has been pounded with a severe storm (in Wellington we call that a stiff breeze) the patio furniture was blown over again and the fragile trees fell apart. (we were there - it was as good as a Wellington Southerly - Ed)
Oh, there was something, I drove the new Kaikoura road, well some of it was new, some old and some of it is not road yet. The road crew have done some great work there, they have moved mountains and the parts that are complete are damn good, but they still have still have one hell of a lot of work left to do and I look forward to driving it again in a few months to see further progress. After driving that alternative route that I have bleated about in the past I am happy to put up with the ongoing roadworks on the coast road. The AGM will be the first under the new constitution and we need your participation, so put in your nominations and come along and vote. Well my PC now tells me I have rambled for nearly 300 words. I'm picking that this months contribution from me should be some sort of an annual report. So what should I report on? Firstly I feel the runs that the rally committee have put on have been well received by those who attended, in particular the 60th running of our November Rally. Extending it back out to cover both days of the weekend seemed to work well, so hopefully we will continue along these lines in the future. The Club Captains Safari is looking like we will keep it along the present format and travel to Whanganui for their increasingly popular Vintage Weekend. Swapping a few rallies around date wise also seemed to work OK, all we needed were a few new restorations to come out of their sheds and into the sunlight. You may have noticed that I used the term "well received" earlier and wonder why? Because while everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, we were not exactly overrun with entries for anything. This of course has its advantages as it makes life very easy finding places to park, have lunch and the final tally up. But it is a little disappointing in terms of the effort that goes into arranging some events. One of our long term members often asks where are the other 250 or so members who we never see, and what are we doing wrong that they never turn up? I can't answer that, and I doubt that anyone could. So I've decided that I'm not going to worry about them too much as long as they keep paying their subs. The main concern for the Club Captain as far as I'm concerned is that those of you who turn up for events continue to enjoy yourselves. Regards

This month we have two important notices, one is the notice of the AGM on page 11 followed by the minutes of the 2017 AGM, and the other, an outline of our 60th Birthday, which has been changed from July to November. This is to give more time for preparation and because people prefer evening functions when it is warmer. We hope to see you at the AGM and if you have a likely candidate for the committee in mind, please ring or email our secretary, Alastair McCarthy (contact details on the inside front page for details) for a nomination form. See you there! And don’t forget to contact Tasi about the party! March and April were busy months with the Quadruple Bike Pass Trip all the way down the South Island to the bottom and back, the North Island National Rally in the Waikato, yet another interesting Kapiti Coast Midweek run to see how hub caps are made, and the Sunday Run going to Pauatahanui to see an old house an drive up to the hill tops for a magnificent view. I had also hoped for a report on the fascinating talk at our April Club Night, when one of our members, Mike Patison?????, talked about his experiences when organising the New Zealand Pavilions for several World Expo’s and also, the hospitality and catering for the America’s Cup. There was not enough time because this news letter has an early deadline because of the AGM but it will have to be in the next issue.

I was surprised to be asked at the last Club Night how to take out a book. This wasn't the first time I have been asked so I thought that it would be timely to remind members what to do. At the left just inside the door to the library there is a book case. About half way along and at bench height is an exercise book open at the current page. There are four columns across the page. Another beatiful Sunday with clear sky. 275 of the 280 members of our Car Club missed out on an extremely interesting visit. The lucky people who did and their cars were as follows: Ian McCulloch Richard and Lynne Baines Rex and Lynne Howard Richard Davies Don and Maureen Hawkes

Ian McCulloch had previously arranged for us to visit a property on the Paekakariki Hill road. The house we went to was built back in 1853. Our hosts, Jim and Doreen, made us very welcome, and settled us at a large wooden table outside in the sun for our picnic lunches, before showing us around the large and beautiful house, with lots of old furniture, ornaments and pictures worthy of a museum, to fill it and give atmosphere. Then we all leapt into our cars and followed Jim for a drive up a rough and winding shingle road up a hill behind their place, through their recently cutover pine plantation. Wow, what a view from the top; over the western hills to the Pauatahanui Inlet, and in the distance to the south east to Wellington Harbour! It was with reluctance that we left for home at 3.30 pm .

Meeting Monday March 26th 16 members attended the meeting and guest James Chambers.
Past Events. Aaron’s Quadruple Bike Pass Tour 15-25th March. Hal O’Rorke gave a report on this trip, supplemented by various other attendees. Mail Run, Taupo to Napier: 10th March (Hawkes Bay Classic Motorcycle Club). Dennis Palmer attended this with his 1939 Harley. This run is for girder fork bikes and (nowadays) rigid rear bikes. From 42 bikes Dennis won “Best 1930’s motorcycle” and the overall “Alan Wakefield Trophy”. Next year is the 30th so we need to organise a team. Levin Swap Meet: 17th March. John Neill reported on this. It was probably the biggest that he has attended, and there were more motorcycle goodies on offer.
Coming Events (as at the meeting date). Ted Green Motorcycle Rally: 8th April, Horowhenua Branch, Levin. The organiser is happy to receive entries on the day. Note that it is “Bring your own” lunch. Castrol Motorcycle Rally: 21st April, Wanganui. Winter Reliability Trial: 5-6th May, Wairarapa.

Quadruple Bike Pass Tour Report

Day 1: Ten riders, with our Mr Backup (Bob Mann) and Mel Walker in the van, set out on an extended South Island tour. The tour, organised by Aaron Janes, sailed via the Interislander on the afternoon of Thursday 15th March, for a first night in Blenheim before getting into the tour. Friday was a ride via the Shenandoah Pass and Lewis Pass to Rangiora. It started badly for Dave O’Leary and his Honda CX500 when the front brake locked just out of our camp. A quick “fix” was to release pressure via the bleed nipple and later top up the fluid. Because of rain, Paul Switzer had to make a quick trip to The Warehouse for some rainproof overtrousers. Trevor Barnes, as holder of DOD, had two candidates before midday. Trevor had discovered oil on his trouser leg at Culverden, Dennis Palmer had forgotten to pack the promised cheese cake, but Dave scored DOD for burning boiled spuds for our first night BBQ.

Day 2: From Rangiora to Oamaru. Trevor dashed off ahead to go to his brother’s place in Timaru to fix the leak, then caught the tail end of the group before Oamaru. DOD was awarded to Hal O’Rorke. Day 3: A long hike to Invercargill via Catlins with the obligatory stop to check out Curio Bay. DOD was awarded to David Gwynn. Dave O’Leary found that besides a dicey brake he had an oil leak too. Day 4 to Day 6: 4 nights in Invercargill. So we settled in for the duration. The first day was spent at Motorcycle Mecca , E Hayes & Son (Burt Munro bikes, an amazingly weird engine and lots of other stuff) and Transport World. Dave had put the CX500 into Honda for repair. They fixed the leak but not the brake. DOD was not awarded. Next day was a trip to Bluff’s Stirling Point then Oreti Beach before riding to Gore. DOD was won by Dave O again. Not for almost The Quadruple Bike Pass Team at Bluff losing it over the cliff at Stirling Point because of no front brake, but for riding past the Honda shop when taking the bike back to them. The third day was very wet, so some ventured out to Riverton in the van though Trevor opted to stay in the hope of visiting a friend when the rain eased – it didn’t.) Dave’s CX500 brake was fixed by Honda after he sourced a new master kit. DOD was awarded to Ray Janes. Day 7: From Invercargill to Haast via the Crown Range. Yuk weather to Kingston, by which time we could see snow on the mountains. For some of us the How many does it take to fix a Honda? Crown Range was the first experience of riding in All photos taken by Ashley Blair falling snow. At lunch in Cardrona one could hardly see out of the pub windows, so we didn’t tarry. We were out of the snow well before Wanaka and out of the rain by Makarora. DOD to Paul Switzer. Day 8: From Makarora to Hokitika with no drama, and DOD was awarded to Mel Walker. Day 9: From Hokitika going back to Rangiora over Arthurs Pass. Big trucks toiling over the pass were a problem for some. An interesting scene was observed while crossing the oneway bridge over the Waimakariri River. A large group of nude people came running out of the bush on the far side splashing through the river and over the shingle. A real cool sight! At Rangiora DOD was awarded to Dave O again – possibly a record to receive it three times. Day 10: Back to the 2pm ferry via Kaikoura. For most of us it was our first time along this route since the earthquake. Numerous stop-go sections but one must admire the work that has gone into rebuilding the road. We made it to the ferry on time and thus another big adventure was over – with no bike permanently in the van. 7
NORTH ISLAND NATIONAL RALLY

Hal, freshly retired, decided he’d like to do the Easter Rally which, this year, was hosted by the Waikato branch. With our 1928 Austin 7 Chummy ‘Daffodil’ on the trailer, we set off north to stay with very close friends in Cambridge also stalwarts of the VCC. The whole weekend had beautiful weather, a real plus in our tiny open-top car. With 77 entries, the carpark at the clubrooms was a hive of activity, most of us tucking into hot cross buns with a cuppa. This was where we discovered that Cristina van Dam and Norman Willis were also up from Wellington having driven their 1925 Fiat 501C all the way.
The Easter Bunny was at the gate to set us going with Easter eggs. Although we were only setting off 1/2 minute apart, there were eight classes on three different routes so we were soon alone in the countryside, heading east, and hardly saw another car until the lunch stop. Many of the roads were very familiar as we were Waikato members for many years; it is beautiful countryside for rallying. Rolling green farming country, few main highways and very sparse traffic but the occasional agricultural whiff. There were five silent checks in the morning and three in the afternoon. The only timed section started as soon as we were out of the gate but, after we’d passed the marshall, we could proceed at our own pace. Unfortunately part of the timed section was on a main highway so we arrived at the end far too soon; I didn’t know Daffodil could go quite so bone-shakingly fast! The lunch stop at the Tatuanui Hall right by the Tatua Dairy factory, gave us a chance to inspect all the other cars and there were some really rare beauties. Not surprising for the Waikato you might say but these are life-size sculptures and decorated by a number of artists then distributed around the streets. Each entrant had seven statements about the cows and we had to match them up. For instance, “Who spilt the paint” was this one The Morrinsville streets were busy with VCC members dashing up and down as we had only 45 minutes to complete the quiz. Such fun! Then it was a straightforward run back through farmland to the clubrooms. 52miles in all for us on the slow vintage run. A pizza dinner and toasted marshmallows at the rustic Oasis Retreat followed by Paul Trenwith (Hamilton County Bluegrass Band) and his wonderful country music. A mystery tour of historic Cambridge and Leamington had been arranged for the Sunday with a picnic lunch at Hamilton Gardens. It was a great idea with details of the old buildings on the tour sheet, many built before 1900 eg the Cambridge Primary School which opened in 1874.

The weekend ended with an elegant dinner at Gail’s of Tamahere and more music from Paul Trenwith to which Cristina and Norman danced expertly. Due to a significant over-ordering of hot cross buns, most got a packet for pretty well any achievement: Hal for being retired, Norman for the longest travelled vintage! We were amazed to come second in the slow vintage class despite the fast timed section.

KAPITI COAST MID WEEK RUN

Seventeen enthusiasts met for morning tea at the Aston Norwood gardens, and then enjoyed a very pleasant drive over the hill and on to Martinborough, where we were able to be seated altogether for a very pleasant lunch. After lunch when we managed to round up the ladies who found the lure of the Martinborough shops too much to resist, we proceeded to Dave Patten’s workshop on New York street. Dave is the ‘Hubcap specialist” who explained in great detail how he duplicates just about any vintage or classic hubcap. It takes a lot of skill and patience as well as a lot of knowledge and Dave was very willing to answer the myriad of questions. He also had a couple of interesting vehicles in his workshop awaiting restoration, one of them was a Ford Jailbar or similar! Dave is a Lanchester-Daimler enthusiast so after we had exhausted our flow of questions at the workshop we spent a very enjoyable hour looking around his collection while Dave explained how each model was different as the years progressed and also some of the cars’ history. He advised that the very healthy financial position of the Branch at the end of the 2016 financial year was mainly due to three things: The receipt of 18 months subscriptions (because of the change in the date of the clubs subscription year) A $4,000 windfall return of GST monies from the IRD (half of which the Treasurer believes will have to be returned), and Monies from the sale of items bequeathed to the Branch by Leland Crosthwaite.

The recommended budget for 2017/18 has a surplus of $2,000 to $3,000 and includes $2,000 to be set aside for future building maintenance, and $1,000 to be set aside for future maintenance of the Branch fire engine. Being the only nominees these people were duly elected. General Business Constitution: The Secretary outlined the reasons for amending the Constitution, noting that removal of the requirement for the accounts to be audited should be added to the summary printed on pg. 6 of the May 2017 Motoring Spirit. He thanked those members who had read the proposed Constitution and submitted comments, and invited questions and comments from the floor of the meeting.

It was suggested that the accounts should be “Reviewed” rather than “Audited”, as this is a much cheaper process commonly used by similar organisations. The Secretary will collate all the comments received, they will considered by the Branch Committee and a revised draft prepared for consideration by a Special General Meeting. Sound System: It was suggested that the adequacy of the sound system should be reviewed as it seemed to cause problems. The incoming committee will look into this. Events: Roger White (on behalf of the Rally Committee) asked for feedback from the members about the suitability of the events that were being organised, and this initiated a long discussion with many members contributing. A summary of the main points is set out below:
Members are less keen on competitive events than they were in the past, Sunday events may not suit families who have limited family time available to them, Opportunities for setting interesting rallies in Wellington is very constrained by topography and traffic, which is heavier than it used to be, Interesting destinations, known in advance, may attract more participants (the success of the Wednesday mid-week runs is evidence of this), Social events and tours are becoming more popular, Perhaps the number of competitive events should be reduced, Engraving trophies is expensive – perhaps the number of trophies to be competed for should be reduced, Perhaps events should endeavour to cater more for the interests of women, It is difficult for new members to participate as established members “know the ropes” and information about how rally instructions etc. are provided and followed is not readily available. The Branch should make greater efforts to engage with new members and assist them to take a full part in club activities, It was suggested that the Branch should raise its public profile by making cars accessible to the public via car shows or other similar events. Showing the public the wide range of cars catered for by the VCC may encourage new members to join.

COMING EVENTS LADIES RALLY SUNDAY 20TH MAY Meet at the Clubrooms at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Might need to learn a few botanical names for this one. Native trees. Sounds interesting. Don’t forget to have a go at driving your vehicle, let’s get a good turnout for this one event that the ladies can drive and don’t have to shout at the male drivers instructions that they don’t hear as they left their hearing aids out.
Pam McLean started this event way back in 1970. This will be the 48th Running of the event. So come on ladies, give it a go, as we don’t want to lose the one event we can take part in. Men get your baking skills out and practise what you will bake for afternoon tea. This will be judged before it is eaten. Mark the date on your calendar and let’s see a good response for this event. Why are we having a birthday party in 2018 when the first Rally was in 1967? Well its pure maths. The year of the first rally is year zero. It is not Year 1 until th the end of the first year in 1968. Thus the 60 birthday party should be in 2018. And in case you are questioning why it is in November rather than July, the month of the first meeting of the Club was because experience has shown that we get a much better turn out for evening functions in November than in the middle of the winter. Must be the temperature.
