Welcome to our new Editor Selwyn Well Winter has finally bitten, June is almost done and the shortest day is now history. We have some new members on the committee, and have lined people up with their positions and on target to have another good year ahead, starting with the leprechaun run this weekend. Brian Christensen has volunteered to take over co-ordinating the guest speakers for club nights and Selwyn is stepping into Claire’s shoes (not the high heeled ones) so please help them out with info for the Motoring Spirit and ideas for speakers for Club night. Tasi is going to organise the November Rally dinner/60 th Birthday bash, so that will be another success. Last year we had a guest appearance from one of the Brothers Gibb. This year it might be Liberace, after all, the theme is Glam. Any volunteers for that costume? I was pleased to see such a good turnout for club night in the cold—What hearty souls the car people are. What did you think of that Porsche Spider?
Well my ramblings are a bit short this month, but I have to finish now as our editor said he wanted my input on Friday and I am running out of minutes. See you all next club night.

Hi everyone, welcome to this, my first newsletter since 1973; love those long holidays, don’t you!! I feel like Rip Van Winkle, going to sleep after having produced my last newsletter using a wax template and a Gestetner, and waking up in a bewildering digital world.
No doubt I’ll get the hang of it before the next election of Officers, but in the meantime, if you see some mistakes. DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER or there wont be an August edition. Thanks must go to Claire Benge for her past sterling efforts, and for waking up ole’ Rip.

Sunday 3rd June The day dawned fine but cloudy. Ian McCulloch had organised this run and we met at the Borough Café in Tawa. Leaving there at 11.30, the run took in the Takapau Gorge via the back road, arriving at Johnsonville, where the cars then went over to Ohariu Valley, stopping at the Saddle Back café for everyone enjoyed a lovely meal. Administration Horowhenua branch has asked for our motorcycle contact list so they can contact riders for their events. Our contact list contains only name, street address, phone numbers and email address. After discussion there was no objection to this being provided to the branch. Coming Events (as at the meeting date) There are no events scheduled until the Taranaki Rubber Duckie, September 15 -16 . Aarons North Island Tour 16 -20 March 2019: Aaron outlined the current plan. First day, visit the Horowhenua Swap Meet then to the Yellow House CafĂŠ in Wanganui for lunch and on to Taumarunui for the night. Then 17 to Otorohanga (or Waitomo?) until the 19 or 20 . Still to be decided is whether to leave on the 19 for, say, Taihape and home on the 20 or stay another night in Otorohanga and home on the 20 . Advance notice: National Motorcycle Rally, Blenheim 15-17 February 2019 plus tours 18-22 . Only four riders indicated they were going to the rally. For those not camping, accommodation may be difficult to find. th

Daffodil Rally For Cancer 26th August 2018 Below is a photo of the Ramaroa Centre at QE park. This will be the HQ for our event. to raise funds for the Cancer Society on Sunday 26th August 2018. The event keeps getting bigger and we now have the Kapiti Horse Riding Stables on board as well as the Model Aircraft Society. This should be a really good day! Twenty-five keen vintage car enthusiasts gathered at The Fig Tree café on Ferguson Drive, Upper Hutt, for an excellent lunch and natter before taking a very pleasant drive to Phil and Coral Kidd’s beautiful property in the Mangaroa Valley.
Phil is busy building a replica 1923 Essex Speedster that is going to end up being a copy of a car that was specially built for Mr R B Jackson, who was the president of the Hudson Motor Car Company. Most of the mechanicals appear to be well on the way to completion and Phile is at the woodwork and panel beating stage. Phil then gave us a talk about the history of the Essex car and an account of the work that he had completed on the car to date. After many questions, we adjourned to the house for tea and coffee. JUNE CLUB NIGHT - A replica Porsche RS60 RSK By Selwyn Warren Stewart Collinson from the Constructors Car Club, brought along his replica Porsche to show us. This car took Stewart 13 years to complete from a picture he had of one. He designed it using a Computer Aided Design program ( CAD ) and built various bits of machinery to help in the construction, one of which was a machine to shape the large amounts of polystyrene strips he used to fabricate the body before laying over fibreglass cloth. Over 400 hours were spent slicing and smoothing to get the body finished to the standard where it could finally be painted. The car is based around the Porsches of the 1950’s and is similar to the one in which the Actor James Dean died after crashing. Stewart built a steel space frame and used Volkswagen front suspension and a Subaru turbocharged 220 H.P motor to power it. Ccertainly looks the part. Thanks Stewart for bringing the car along.

LEPRECHAUN RALLY 24 June BRUCE BENGE As told by Bruce Benge to Claire Benge who was unable to attend the Rally Rob Phillips, a former Graham Paige owner and club member, navigated for Bruce A group of brave souls met at the Everest Café in Featherston at 8.00 am for a delicious breakfast, and were joined by the late risers at 9.00 am for coffee, to make up a group of about 8 cars, including our esteemed chairman, and the others, mostly regulars. Only two were moderns, which wasn’t bad considering it was only four days after the shortest day. Because the weather was not good, Neale handed out the rally instructions in the café, and entrants were told to start in their own time. The instructions took them on a scenic route towards Lake Ferry, where they continued on the road to Ngawi. Even though the wind was from the North, the South Coast of the North Island was bleak, and Bruce swore he could see the icebergs at the Antarctica. They carried on through Ngawi to the end of the road where the Palliser Lighthouse stands, 230 steps up from the carpark. Some intrepid (or mad) members climbed the steps to the Lighthouse where they said the view was superb. Back at Ngawi for lunch, the sun was shining but the wind was strong and cold. Fortunately there was a thick Pohutakawa hedge that supplied some shelter for a picnic. At about 2.00 pm, the vehicles all made their way back to Wellington at their own speeds. As they neared the Remutakas, the rain became heavier and constant while the wind speed increased. Bruce thought that the wind and rain was the worse he had ever experienced on the hill. The wind and rain was so noisy that it was only a glance out the back window of the truck cab that Rob noticed the tray lid had been blown opened. They stopped around Muldoon’s corner (where he went round the bend) to find that one of the stays had ripped out of the end attached to the tray. It is being fixed and strengthened as this is being written. In spite of the weather and the trouble on the hill it was a most enjoyable and exciting rally. 11

Saturday of Queens Birthday Weekend saw us heading north to Whanganui for their annual rally. It looked promising with the sun shining until we were through Turakina, when the cloud cover changed it to “not looking good”. Considering it was the beginning of the long weekend, after a short queue before Paekakariki, the traffic was light and the journey less than 2½ hrs. We were one of the first to pick up our rally pack at the Whanganui VCC Clubrooms before checking out the parts shed. Then we found our motel and settled in. There was a light dinner at the clubrooms but with the cold weather, we decided on a quiet, warm night at the motel.
Sunday weather was not good, 10 and low cloud. We gathered at the Cornmarket reserve by the Dublin Street Bridge at 9.00 am, with time to view the competing vehicles (58 entries). The first car left at 9.30 with minute intervals between. We followed the river before turning back through the city to drive west along the countryside between SH3 and the sea. At Mowhanau, near Kai Iwi Beach we went inland on a gravel road where the timed section started. o
Back to SH3 before immediately turning off on another country road that headed into the interior. Winding roads, some of it gravel, lead us back to SH3 where the timed section finished. Norwest again for a short time then inland again at Waitotara, with more gravel and another timed section, to end up near Waverley for lunch at Willowbank. The weather had not improved and was very cold so it was good to get out of the rain in a big shed with lunch for those who had prepaid. Comparing experiences, we found that our silent check count was very low. We must have been enjoying the scenery too much We left in our own time for the afternoon section, heading into Waverley and then towards New Plymouth on SH3 to turn towards the sea after the Waverley Race Course. Around in a half circle and back to SH3 at Moumahaki, East toward Kai Iwi, and diving back inland. Another curve inland heading East brought us back to Whanganui and the river. From there we crossed the Dublin Street Bridge and headed to the Clubrooms and afternoon tea. Time for a break then off to drinks and dinner at the Laird Park Bowling Club. After a tasty buffet dinner the Prize Giving Ceremony started. Bruce and I, the only Wellington representatives, in our 1946 Ford V8 Pickup, missed getting an award although 2 in the Commercial class, because there were only 3 entries, so PLEASE attend the rally with us next year (especially commercial vehicles) so that we can scoop up all the awards ☺. nd

COMING EVENTS REMEMBRANCE RALLY/SOCIAL COUNTRY RUN SUNDAY 22ND JULY. STARTS AT CLUB ROOMS 9.30am FOR 10.00am START. Begins with a reading from the book of Murray. The run will take in some of the Hutt Valley with a stop at the Heretaunga Rest Home in Silverstream. Then continuing over the hill to the Workingmens Club in Greytown for lunch. $25pp for roast and dessert. We need to know numbers for this event by the 17th July. COLONIAL CUP RALLY New Restorations The annual Colonial Cup Rally will be held on 29 August 2018 and will end at Queen Elizabeth Park, to coincide with the Daffodil Day event. Before that however, the club would like to make an award for the best restoration of the year, for a club eligible vehicle. If you have a new restoration and would like to be considered for this award, please notify the Club Captain, Neale Ryder, as soon as possible, so that preparation can be made to judge the vehicles, in advance of the Rally day.

10 June, 2018 Michael Lavender, VCC Secretary/Treasurer, PO Box 2546, Christchurch 8140 REMIT FOR VOTING ON AT THE EXECUTIVE MEETING, AUGUST 2018 The Remit together with its explanation as presented for discussion and comment at the March Executive Meeting is submitted here in its final wording following the receipt and consideration of comments; We propose that the following clauses entitled “Vehicle Eligibility” and “Historic Vehicle” be included in the Club By-laws to complement a Notice of Motion we have placed to amend clause 3.1(f) of the Club Constitution. We understand that regardless of the outcome of our Notice of Motion, it will be useful to Club members if this relevant information, which is currently in our Vehicle Technical Code, is inserted in the Club By-laws for referral. Vehicle Eligibility Vehicles shall be Club-eligible when they are 30 years of age or older. The date of construction of a vehicle shall be determined in accordance with section 2 of the Club Vehicle Technical Code, by establishing the first available proven date commencing with; (a) Date of availability from the manufacturer if documented; then (b) Date of shipping or leaving the place of manufacture if documented; then (c) Date of delivery (which could also be the date of first registration in the country delivered to); then
(d) Date of completion (if the vehicle has been significantly modified or altered); then (e) If none of the above dates can be established, a vehicle shall be deemed to be Club-eligible after the 31st December of the year that is 30 years after its determined ‘year of manufacture’. Historic Vehicle A Historic Vehicle is a mechanically propelled vehicle, manufactured more than 30 years ago, preserved and maintained in a historically appropriate condition and for the time being in the care of a person or organisation keeping it for its historic, cultural and technical interest or pioneering significance, and using and appreciating it

This process has applied for many years. The clause entitled Historic Vehicle provides the definition of the term “Historic Vehicle” in keeping with the meaning that is being accepted worldwide by historic vehicle clubs and by governing authorities. Using the words “in historically appropriate condition” accommodates a limited range of vehicle modifications described in our Vehicle Technical Code as being acceptable for the reasons outlined there, including lack of availability of parts, practicality, safety and regulation. Our VCC definition also reflects that, here in New Zealand, our “historic vehicles” may be “used and appreciated as is practicable”, sometimes frequently. We expect that a greater appreciation of our “historic vehicle” definition will become very relevant in the future

At the recent meeting of the Club's Vehicle Technical Committee, the Remit that has been lodged for the Executive to consider at its meeting in August was discussed. This Remit proposes to amend the Club's Bylaws to include two clauses; The first of these clauses is entitled "Vehicle Eligibility and sets out the dating procedure for the acceptance of Club-eligible Vehicles as described in Section 2 of the Club's Vehicle Technical Code.
This clause complements the Notice of Motion that the Club Registrar has put forward to remove some ambiguous wording from the Post 1980 Vehicle clause in the constitution. This will ensure that the club's 30 year rule for vehicle eligibility can be adhered to as the Executive intended back in 2002. The second clause in the Remit is entitled "Historic Vehicle", and sets out the definition of "historic vehicle". This is taken from the Club's Vehicle Technical Code, approved by the Executive in 2002. Our VCC definition is in keeping with the definition that is embraced worldwide. However, after considering recent comments by our members, it has now been amended to better reflect our New Zealand custom and practice; the words "in historically correct condition" have been amended to read “in historically appropriate condition�. This sensibly accommodates a limited range of vehicle modifications described in our Vehicle Technical Code as being acceptable for the reasons outlined there, including lack of availability of parts, practicality and safety. Our VCC definition also reflects that, here in New Zealand, our "historic vehicles" may be "used and appreciated as is practicable", sometimes frequently. I wish to let all branch members know that our Vehicle Technical Committee has endorsed both of the Clauses in Registrar Rod Brayshaw's Remit; this remit will go out to branches this month with the approved wording amendment that has been made after the submission period, as mentioned above. Much thought and consideration has gone into both their Notice of Motion and the associated Remit. JOKES OF THE MONTH A man saw a sign outside a house: "Talking Dog For Sale". Intrigued, he knocked on the door. The owner appeared and told him the can see the dog down the back of the garden. Sure enough, a very nice looking Labrador retriever is sitting there under a tree. "Do you really talk?" the man asked the dog. "Yes", replied the dog. After recovering from the shock of hearing a dog talk, the man said "Well, please, tell me your story." The Labrador looks up and says "When I discovered, pretty young, that I could talk, I wanted to help the government, so I was sold to the security services. Pretty soon they had me off overseas, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no-one imagined that a dog could be eavesdropping on them. I became their most valuable spy. But the years of jetting around made me pretty tired and so I was allowed to retire. I did sign up for some undercover work at the airport, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. But now I really am retired." The man, gob-smacked, decided he's going to buy this dog and goes back to the house and asks the owner how much he wants for the dog. "Twenty bucks" came the reply. "Twenty dollars! That's amazing. So, why are you selling him so cheaply?" "Because he's a lying bugger. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
25 July 2018 Visit to The Coach House Museum, 121 South Street, Feilding. This vast historical collection spans over 140 years and includes Maori Waka, beautifully restored horse-drawn vehicles, vintage trucks, farm machinery and Edwardian household items. Meet at Hyde Park Village Café, Te Horo, at 9.30am, for morning tea. Hyde Park Village is approximately 5kms north of the end of the Expressway and the Village and Café are on the left, off SH1. Meet for lunch at Viv’s Kitchen, Sanson, at 11.45am. Viv’s is located on the right of SH1 about 1, 500 metres after turning left at the Sanson Intersection, going towards Bulls. Depart 1.00 to 1.15 from Viv’s, for the Museum (directions available at the lunch stop). Cost is $12.00 per person. There will also be a display of art works in the foyer of the museum.
