CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

Damn! its December already and Christmas is almost upon us, the silly season, but November was a great month starting with the November rally, even in the rain there were happy faces arriving at the printing museum. Thanks to Kevin Buck for affording me the privilege of standing in the rain, directing rally participants, as I stood in for him as a marshal. Hope to see you soon so I can thank you in person! Then there was the dinner in the club rooms that had been transformed by Tasi and her helpers, into another world. Good food, entertainment and good company including our national president and husband (Diane and Geoff Quarrie) and the visiting southerners. The Nelson visitors did themselves proud by taking out a number of the rally awards and we would be happy to see them again in the future. They even managed leave with some spares from our stock, but not before Alick extracted some money from them. I was privileged to be able to present a 25 Year award to Carolyn Banks, congratulations Carolyn. Diane had the privilege of presenting two 50 year awards, to Roderick Kinghorn and Peter Fry; congratulations to them both. I am amazed to see how many long-standing members the branch has. And the president’s award to Diane White, well that came out of the blue, I for one didn’t even know that such an award existed in the club. By the time you get to read this, the children’s Christmas party will be over and the last club night for the year will be looming up, I look forward to another great night. As this is my last column for the year, have a great Christmas and a brilliant New Year.

As Bill said, It’s December already and the silly season is upon us. Hopefully the weather improves, as it hasn’t been the best so far, although today, Friday, isn’t too bad. I’ve just come back from 2 days in Whanganui, where it was 23 degrees, so they’re lucky. Not so good over the Tasman, with bushfires one end and floods the other. Talking of Aussie as we sometimes have to, out of the corners of our mouths, I have to say I have got hooked on their T.V series, Outback Truckers—how about that for a job! Talk about wind blown dust n dirt, not to mention mud, rain, or corrugations. Takes an Aussie interior to break the best America can build. Some of the loads they shift, Phew! Mine trucks that over hang the trailer by metres, and have 8 wheels, each weighing more than 2 elephants, not that I know how much an elephant weighs. That’s it now, till the February issue. A great many photos are still required for events over past years, so please check your digital devices as these are easily lost in this world of digital melt downs. Most importantly, do you have a backup copy? if so, is it kept in a safe place away from your original file? If you took any photos at this year’s annual rally and the 60th birthday dinner, could you copy them for the branch archive. They could be displayed in a photo frame on the club room wall. Michael
November Kapiti Mid Week Run

Lindale, just north of Paraparaumu, was the venue for this month’s mid-week run lunch stop. Lindale used to be the place to go but now looks and feels like a deserted Wild West town, however there is one bright spot, a young Hungarian couple have taken over the restaurant and are producing very good food at reasonable cost, so 32 of us were able to enjoy a very convivial lunch. One dish deserving special mention is the Goulash: - a large bowl filled to the brim with a type of soup with more meat and vegetables than liquid, accompanied by a slice of bread made on the premises, all for $12. After lunch, we travelled a little further North to visit Nick Sparrow at 268, Main Road North, Otaihanga, where Nick has a vapour blasting business. Vapour blasting is an ideal process for cleaning small car parts, [anything up to a small engine block] and Nick gave us a comprehensive explanation as to how the process works and demonstrated on several components that we had brought along. The cost is $90 per hour but he cleaned a mechanical petrol pump for me in about five minutes. The process involves blasting water and minute glass beads at the object and because of the pressure generated, the water vaporises to lubricate the glass beads. The ladies were able to view the extensive gardens while the car buffs vapour blasted.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 26 NOVEMBER Trevor Barnes 20 people attended the meeting. Leon Cooke was a newNew attendee, and Laurie Anderson was an invited guest – a past motorcycle member who can no longer ride. Past Events. Wairarapa 50th Celebration Rally 12th-14th October: Attended by Gerry Appel, Ian Munro and Trevor Barnes. A front tyre blowout saw Ian on the trailer not long after the start but he was extremely fortunate not to crash. Congratulations Ian, you won the hard luck prize. Southland Motorcycle Rally 10th November: I rode my Honda 400/4 to Queenstown. Robin Barnes and son Derek trailered the 1929 Sunbeam and 1986 Honda CBR250. A very wet ride to brother Barry’s in Timaru for me. It was a wet and cold ride for Derek on the 400/4 to Omarama while I rode Barry’s Suzuki and sidecar. From Omarama it was me and Barry riding over the snowy Lindis Pass. Fortunately the rally day and the return days were fine. Robin was awarded First Vintage Road Section. Auckland Motorcycle Rally 17th November: Paul Switzer made his own way up and back with his Royal Enfield on his trailer. Dennis Palmer, John Neill and I set out to ride to Taumarunui via the Paraparas on the Thursday, with Peter Simpson as backup with van and trailer. Unfortunately John had to turn back at Sanson with a main bearing problem on the Golden Flash. To Orewa via SH4, SH3 and SH39 on Friday. From the rally start a short journey through the built up area put us on enjoyable country roads. The first stop was to the main depot for the Puhoi motorway extension where we were given an overview of the process and the huge numbers involved – machines and money. Interestingly they prefer female machinery operators as they are kinder to the machines. Departure time and Paul’s R.E. backfired and caught fire! Prompt action by several people, including Paul, got the fire out and he continued the rally. The good roads continued until near the end when we briefly had to go on SH1 until the Orewa turnoff. Unfortunately Peter didn’t make it all the way on the Matchless and found good company on the backups as four other bikes expired – one even before the start. Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial 24th-25th November: This was a good run in fine weather with over 50 entries, 11 from the Wellington Branch though unfortunately John Viner couldn’t attend. The short and long routes headed south to Martinborough then up Longbush Road through Gladstone.Then the long route turned for Wainuioru, while the short route continued towards Masterton. Both routes joined before Tinui School for an excellent lunch. The afternoon run swung south to the Riversdale road before returning to Masterton and Carterton. At the dinner the following medals and trophies were awarded to Wellingtonians: Hal O’Rorke (Ambassador) a Bronze; Keith Bramley (Honda CB350) a Silver; Cont. next page 6

Other Business. Meeting nights for 2019: We now have confirmation that the function room will be available free of charge for 2019. Meeting dates have been given to Dale. There are only two months where the meeting will be on the third Monday – April (Easter) and October (Labour Day). Next Meeting: There is no December meeting as we combine with the car section for Xmas. January: 4 Monday 28 at The Butcher and Brewer, 7:30pm. Important Message From John And Allison Kinvig Alison and I are delighted that the mid-week run is going to continue next year in the very safe hands of a mini committee consisting of Hal and Anne O’Rorke, Trevor Barnes and Roderick Kinghorn. We would like to thank all the people who have supported us during the last two years especially those who have opened their homes and others who have come up with ideas on places to visit. A very exciting programme is being planned for you next year but suggestions for visits are still more than welcome. John and Allison 7
NOVEMBER CLUB NIGHT . A Passage Through India This months speaker was Peter Simpson, who talked about his recent motorcycle trip from Delhi to Leh, up near the border with Pakistan and in the Himalayas. The trip was an organised one from here and there were 12 people on it, all keen to ride the local Lee Enfield bikes, a legacy from the British rule, but now much modernised. The trip started in Delhi in 37 degree heat, and necessitated a mini bus ride and a railway journey to Shimla, ( Simla as it was ) a hillside village 6000 ft. above sea level; the train also a leftover from British rule. There the team met their bikes. After a blessing of the bikes, the group headed off, even higher, on a narrow and treacherous road, no better than a goat track. Slightly cooler now, the route took in breath-taking scenes of fertile valleys, where apples and vegetables grew, alongside “weed” - need I say more! By this time, the group were able to see China in the distance. Hotels were modern, clean and cheap and the villages all had wonderful, carved wooden temples, the area being Buddhist and Hindu. With high mountains all around, the group were soon up to 8000 ft. and at the Tabo Monastery, near Tibet, which was built in 996 AD. Because of the close proximity to Tibet, everything was very Buddhist in nature. The team stopped at Kaza which was now 12000 ft. up and where they saw many hundreds of trucks and tankers, delivering supplies to the villages and the Military establishments further up in the mountains. These vehicles came via a different road much more suited to them. These roads are only open 3 months of the year, and closed the rest of the time, by snow and rock falls, so it was important to get the supplies in before that happened. The last part of the journey was over a pass, or La, of very difficult terrain of rocks and mud, before a tar sealed bit up to Nakeela, 15500 ft., then another pass to Taglang La at the highest point of the journey, 17582 ft. Last stop was Leh where the trip terminated because there was no going beyond, due to a huge Military presence, protecting the border between India and Pakistan, where there is still on-going conflict. From Leh, the group flew back to Delhi, then home to NZ. There were no breakdowns or mishaps, and the group were well looked after by a driver, a guide and a mechanic. Winning (Best in show) at Motorclassica 2018 By David Wilkens In late 2012 after Roy had sadly passed away, Lawrence asked us at Bristols to carry on with the restoration of the family’s 1932 Alfa Romeo Zagato bodied spyder. Once we had picked up all the pieces we started to assemble the car to see what we had and what was missing. We had already fully rebuilt the engine and gearbox for Roy some years before so that was the only thing that didn’t need sorting. Once the car was roughly assembled we could see what was missing and what we needed to find or make and what didn’t fit or needed work to make fit. Pretty much everything had to be worked on as the car had been raced and modified many times over the years and was no longer how it left the factory in 1932. At this stage we started our research on the car and finding out what it should look like and what parts we needed to find. Over the following 5 years, the car went through a fully detailed restoration, never intending it to be entered in one of the world’s most prestige concourse events. The original plan was to restore the car to be a road car not a show car and in our eyes it still was. The car was finished in July this year ready for shipping to Lawrence who now lives in Melbourne. Prior to shipping the car, both Neale and I got the experience of driving such a stunning car for over 500 miles until the engine was run in and the first service done. This was by far one of the best vintage period cars I have ever driven. Once the car had arrived in Melbourne and was safely in Lawrence’s shed, Lawrence then went through the procedures to get the car registered for Australian roads. In the meantime, he was approached by the committee of the Motorclassica and asked to send in an entry to this huge event. The event is by invitation only. Lawrence sent me an email saying he had put an entry in and was waiting on a reply. Two weeks later Lawrence called me to say it had been accepted and would I like to come over for the weekend of the event. I thought about it for 2 minutes and decided this was a once in a life time opportunity and I would be silly not to go. So two flight tickets were purchased along with tickets to the Motrclassica event. Jen and I flew over on Thursday so we could spend some time in Melbourne and Castlemaine with friends, before going to the big event. The Sunday morning of the Motorclassica we made our way to the amazing Melbourne Royal Exhibition building, the venue for the show. Lawrence met us at the gate to give us VIP passes which allowed us through the back door and not have to queue for half an hour. Once in those huge doors, I could not believe my eyes.

After walking around the show for many hours looking over the 175 cars entered, I felt a prize with the Alfa was not on the cards. The standard of the cars and workmanship was amazing. After all, we were not aiming for a show quality car. These cars had been transported from all around Australia for the show with each owner hoping to win a prize or take home Best In Show. Lawrence had told me the concourse judges had spent a lot of time the day before, looking over the Alfa and talking a lot between themselves. Mid-afternoon I met the judges and got asked many questions myself, regarding the restoration process and what we had done. All 3 judges were very impressed and felt the car had a chance of a trophy. Finally the presentation time arrived at 4pm. Up on the podium were approx. 20 trophies for different classes, plus the 3 big ones of the day. After half an hour of presentations it got down to the last 3 trophies. Lawrence and I looked at each other and thought we had no chance against the stunning cars there. Finally after 2nd and 3rd were announced there was only 1 trophy left, the big one, Best In Show, considered the trophy that all judges felt was for the best restoration there. When they called out that the Alfa had won, both Lawrence and I were floored with excitement. It actually bought a tear to my eye. Lawrence went up on stage and gave a huge amount of credit to us at Bristols and told a great story of the cars history. After the presentation we went over to the car for photos and spoke to the judges at length about the judging process and what they look for. They told me it was one of the best restorations they had ever seen. That day felt like one of the proudest days of my career. Winning best in show at one of the world’s best concourse events is something I am very proud of. Having won two major prizes at Pebble beach concourse with the Hispano Suiza last year and now this, we have been put on the world map of top restoration companies, a great feeling for a little business in Upper Hutt. I would like to acknowledge and thank Neale Ryder, John Appel and Snow Benge, all longtime members of the Wellington Vintage Car Club, for all their help in the restoration work done on the Alfa. Annual November Rally As told by Terry Mathers. Not the best of weather for this, our branch Annual November Rally, but 33 cars met at the clubrooms for the start. 6 from Nelson and 1 from Rolleston. They set off up through the Hutt Valley to Nae Nae and then through Silverstream and over Whitemans Valley and the Mangaroa Valley. Apparently there was some confusion with a street name around Plateau Rd, which caused some head scratching, but everyone made it to the lunch stop. Lunch was at the Printing Museum in Maymorn, where a tour was made. This museum has been able to rescue some old printing machinery and memorabilia and is run by volunteers, one of which is our very own Michael Curry. Comments were made as to how difficult it must have been to print in those days, and to make sense of punch cards. It was just as well that there was space for the Rally members to lunch in the building, as it was still inclement outside.
The building that houses the Museum was part of the N.Z Defence Forces Army Camp, that was set up during the First World War. The Defence Department still own all the land and buildings, but lease them to various concerns. After lunch, entrants were able to make their own way back. The rally was about 34 miles in length.

Wellington Branch 60th Birthday Dinner After The Rally Came The Dinner! And what a dinner it was, 97 people sat down for a great night of entertainment and a wonderful meal.. The clubrooms were wonderfully decorated with lots of glitz and glitter, thanks to Tasi and her netball girls. There was a photo booth set up, but I didn’t get a chance to check that out unfortunately. Everybody made an effort to dress up in their glam clothes, to help the evening along and when guests arrived, there was music courtesy of a Karaoke which played on and off throughout the night but not so loud that you couldn't hear yourself speak. Great voice and excellent sets of songs. Up front was the main table where the NZ Club President, Dianne Quarrie and Geoff sat, along with 50 year badge recipients, Pamela and Roderick Kinghorn and Peter Fry and Libby Squires. Wellington Chairman, Bill Pinkham and Kerry Pinkham. Colin Dray and Jean McWhirter and Roger and Diane White. Colin is a foundation member of Wellington Branch, and Roger is a Lifetime member. Ed.

61st Annual Rally Sunday Run By Claire Benge On the 4th of November, a small group of cars collected at the Club Rooms on Sunday morning, for a coffee and gossip about yesterday’s rally and dinner the night before, while waiting for the masses to arrive. At 11 am there were only 5 couples and cars so we all left to follow the very clear route instructions that took us through Petone, onto the Wellington motorway, then off at Ngauranga and up Onslow Road and then the back road to Karori. At the South end of Karori we turned right, up and over the hill to the Makara Village. The instructions directed us through the village to follow the Takapau Gorge Road, a winding narrow road that slowed us right down. Fortunately there were not many vehicles coming towards us and none on blind corners, so we arrived safely at the top of Ohariu Valley and the next instruction, to turn left from which we recognised the group of buildings that contained the Saddleback Café. Some tables had been reserved for VCC members, so we grabbed our seats and studied the menu. Just as we were feeling embarrassed about the surplus tables reserved for us, a contingent of participants arrived having decided not to go out to the Club Rooms, either being from Wellington or continuing on directly from another Sunday activity.
No list of participants was written down but the list would have included Roger and Diane White, Bruce and Claire Benge, Neale and Joanne, Ian and Katrin McCulloch who brought with them Colin Dray and his partner Jean, from Te Awamutu. Alastair and Angelica and Tasi and Ray Betteridge. My apologies for any I have missed out. The weather on the road was sunny, a nice change from the day before. The food and service at the Café was superb, as was the atmosphere, with beams and sloping ceilings and a view out across the accessible and sunny deck, over to the bush clad valley. It is well worth a drive out to Ohariu Valley for a coffee (but maybe the more direct route from the beginning of Karori, than through Makara Village). Claire Benge
I have been to the Saddleback Café and can confirm all that Claire has said. I seem to go there during the Winter for some reason and there is always a roaring fire going. Food is excellent and it has a great atmosphere.

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
12th December 2018 Xmas Lunch at Masonic Village Café, Levin Meet at 12.15pm for a 12.30pm start. Traditional fare; roast beef, ham, roast vegetables, peas, carrots, broccoli with cheese sauce, green salad, Xmas puddings and custard and cheesecakes. Cost $35 per person (cash only as there will be only one account. We will collect the cash from you). You are welcome to bring wine or beer and they will provide the glasses. Directions: From the South, travel through Levin and turn right at the second set of lights into Queen Street East (Clock Tower on the corner)
