Chairman Bruce’s notes Greetings Earthlings. This year’s Shiny Parts auction last Wednesday evening was well supported and for a good cause, fundraising for the clubroom defribulator which has now been ordered. Any club members who feel that this defribulator warrants a generous donation please approach me, or any other committtee member, some have already done so. The total cost of the machine is $2836 and we are already half way there. Spirited bidding on a number of items took place resulting in nearly $1000 being raised, all controlled by auctioneer, not Austineer, Graham Hawtree. Winner of the evenings, “Charlie Bernsten Trophy” was our own keen bidder, Neil Farrer. (Ed’s note, please keep an eye on Neil as this is a never seen before phenomenon, I hope he is OK) The whole evening was a great night out, good entertainment as I am sure will be backed up by the 50+ attendees. Sunday the 26th August Daffodil rally was a great day, 134 entries, 450 - 500 for afternoon tea. Families, young and not so young all enjoying their day out, this is very important. An award + half a bottle of wine was presented to Peter, Doreen and family as well as their helpers for organising the Rally. (Another Editors note, 1/2 a botle of wine between, 12 adults?, we were all OK to drive home!) Good news paper coverage from The Chonicle, River City Press and Midweek and I also took a number of calls over the next few days from people who had
enjoyed the day and were complimenting the club on the outing and are already looking forward to next year. Wednesday 29th August club members assembled at the cancer society rooms to deliver pre-ordered Daffodils etc to busineses around the city. Thanks to all drivers + deliverers, it was an enjoyable day with morning tea supplied. The club has purchased a modern air operated tire removing and bead breaking machine from the Fordel Garage. Once installed it will make things easier for the parts guys Shane Hobman’s Sunday run, September 16th should be interesting, don’t miss it. !pm at the clubrooms. Next club night my Bendigo tour leader and good friend Tony Hancock, “2021 Vero International Festival Director” will be speaking to members about aspects of the Vero Festival of Motoring two and a bit years away. All vehicles 1900-1980s with VIC cards will be eligable. Currently we have 11,200 VIC cards issued. Also that night Wendy Bullock will be talking to us about Art Deco Period clothing making/ altering clsse that she would like to set up in the clubrooms for members. Restoration of the year + items of interest at the December meeting is rapidly approaching so chop chop, get cracking. I know of a couple of vehicles nearly ready to go. Thanks a lot.

After my wife died, I couldn't even look at another woman for 10 years. But now that I'm out of jail, I can honestly say it was worth it ! Got an e-mail today from a "bored housewife 32, looking for some action!" I've sent her my ironing. That'll keep her busy! The wife's been hinting she wants something black and lacy for her birthday. So I've got her a pair of football boots! Growing up with a dyslexic father had its advantages. Whenever he caught me swearing, he used to wash my mouth out with soup! My wife asked if she could have a little peace and quiet while she cooked the dinner, so I took the batteries out of the smoke alarm! Anyone got an owner's manual for a wife? Mine's giving off a terrible whining noise! My wife apologised for the first time ever today. She said she's sorry she ever married me! Does anyone know how long you cook these "boil in the bag fish" that you win at the fun fair? My wife said I needed to be more in touch with my feminine side, so I crashed the car, burnt the dinner and ignored her all day for no reason! Scientists have discovered a certain food that diminishes a woman's sex drive by 90 percent. It's called wedding cake! Things turned really ugly at my house last night. The wife removed her makeup! My wife shouted at me this morning for not opening the car door for her. I would have, but I was too busy swimming to the surface!
VCC Executive & AGM – Napier August 3 – 5, 2018 1. The funeral of Warren Birch was held on Friday afternoon ( 3 August) so Bruce Ardell and I considered that we should attend the funeral as a mark of respect to Warren and the family. Warren was a personal friend to Bruce and I , and had been a member of our Branch for a considerable number of years, prior to his starting the Metro Ford dealership in Porirua. It was a large gathering of over 400 and went on for a long time. Unfortunately we had to leave straight after the service to rush to Napier for the Friday evening VCC Executive meeting. 2. Executive Meeting Friday evening. We arrived just after 8pm – the meeting was well under way so we missed some of the discussion. There had been a full discussion on the proposed budgets – 3 alternatives had been given. Management had recommended that it was preferable to plan on small steps for any increase rather than a big jump in membership fees. In the end the meeting approved an increase of $5 to the base subscription commencing the next financial year. Amongst the reasons for the increase given were a rebuild of our National Office, the hiring of an additional part time staff member and the anticipated reduction of membership due to the aging of members. A significant number of members are over the age of 70. So the basic sub will be $55 plus GST plus branch Levies. 3. AGM Saturday 4 August. 4. National Easter Rallies will now alternative between North and South Islands. 5. International Rally 2021. The proposed new format of the event was outlined , broadly based on the “Americano Events” in New Plymouth. It will be held over 17 – 21 January 2021 , based on the Racecourse and Pukekura Park. There will not be a camping ground so planning ahead for accommodation will be essential. Greg Terrill stated that Vero Insurance had provided over $1 Million to VCC over the past years and were continuing with commissions and support. He asked that members be conscious of this when seeking insurance cover for vehicles and other personal items including houses etc. The Rally Committee are not planning on an overseas guest , unless any possible Guest can be fully sponsored by a firm or entity. This saves between $30 to $50000 . FIVA now have the International Rally on their system – with 69 Countries and 1.5Million members this gives us greater advertising. Entry Fees have not been finalized but are likely to be similar to Dunedin say around $400. Organisers hope for 10% of membership to attend which would be around 800- 850 vehicles. 6. Andrew Anderson our Founder and Life Member gave a very inspiring speech on giving joy to rallies and having people attend that found them exciting and friendly. He said that the days of having long boring rallies should end and bring in a sense of excitement. He talked about the Irishman Rally and others that were a test for drivers and vehicles and FUN. Do what we have done in the past will result in results similar to past failures financially and in attendance. This set the tone for discussion and assisted those attending to focus on new and innovative ideas. 7. Annual Financial Accounts were accepted. Concerns were expressed over the large reserves currently held in Bank Deposits. However over 50% was from previous Building Insurance payouts and would be used when either our existing building in Christchurch was rebuilt or the Club moved into new premises. It was not prudent to spend reserves on current administration costs , which should be covered by subscriptions. The Secretary/Treasurer’s report was received. 8.
Election of Officers The numbers of nominations matched the positions so no changes. David York has stood down so there is a vacancy for one further member on the Management Committee, but the Committee are able to appoint someone to this position.

Meet at 9.00 am at the Coach House Museum, 121 South Street, Feilding. The briefing will be at 9.15 am with the first car away at 9.30 am. The morning section includes some unsealed surfaces. The lunch stop is at a Country Pub. As reservations are necessary indicate below the number of & choices of meals required - but pay the Pub on the day for your meals. The afternoon run ends at a Café for afternoon tea (which is at your own cost). Mileage for combined morning & afternoon sections is approx. 80 miles (130 Kms).

From the desk of Frank James, Wanganui Branch Club Captain Hi everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the Daffodil Rally for Cancer held on Sunday 26 August 2018 – a wonderful turnout of cars and people on a lovely sunny Spring afternoon. A great success again through the enterprising work of Peter Hardy, his family and other helpers. A big thank you to everyone. Our next event is on Sunday 16 September 2016 – a Sunday Run being organised by Shane and Noeline Hobman. Gather at VCC Clubrooms at 1:00pm and bring a plate of afternoon tea with you for leaving at the Clubrooms. The Run will finish at the Clubrooms and we’ll enjoy afternoon tea at that time. The Club Night for October (Wednesday 3 October) will feature two very interesting speakers – we look forward to seeing you there, Please note your calendars and diaries for a working bee at the VCC Clubrooms on Saturday morning 17 November 2018 starting at 9:00am. Wanganui Branch 2018 Daffodil rally for Cancer Well, we were blessed once again with fabulous weather and absolutely fabulous company. 134 registered cars, many very well stocked with senior citizens, grandkids and everything in between took off towards the 30 locations indicated on their maps. As that equates to nearly 5 cars per clue I thought I may have caused a bit of a traffic jam but no, you all managed to spread yourselves about quite well. Even the furthest clue number 7, Waverly Racecourse Float Park, had 12 correct answers. (That won’t happen again next year) I was absolutely astounded at the great atmosphere before, during and after the run. With the numbers that turned out, 450ish people we think, you can imagine we had a bit of a struggle to fit everything in but with help from many corners we managed it and that’s what comes with coordination from all the individuals and clubs we had represented on the day. There were many stories told on the day but one that stood out was from the scatter run earlier in the year.... On the day of your last scatter run I had my daughter and grand kids staying so was unable to participate. I also had to pick up my brother from the airport. The plane was delayed so my wait was significantly longer than expected. I was chatting with some acquaintances who soon noticed the procession of older gentlemen pulling up in vintage cars and ducking into the toilets. Naturally the airport became abuzz with comments about old men and their pit stop requirements. After many unfortunate comments Ed Kirkby told me the whole exercise was to record that there are 3 urinals in the mens. The crowd became greatly relieved (pun intended) Cheers Andrew Johnson We were very well supported with the Daffodil Rally this year by a lot of our local businesses most of which are mentioned on page 11 of this RIVET. We would not have been able to run this event without their help. The trophy was gifted by Neville Rhodes, Rhodes Cabinet Makers and looks like it will be hotly contested next year. Last year’s winner, Wozzo managed to come second this year by only one point so he will be one to watch for next year. Maximum points available was 441, we had two joint thirds with 266, E Greenwell and Rebecca Hardy, Second was Wozzo and Richard with 275 and winners were Jamie and Josephine Coull in their immaculate Morris 1000 Ute. It looks like the Daffodil Rally is awakening old memories as we were blessed with a visit by Ian, “Heck” Drummond and his wife, Ian was one of Wanganui VCC founder members and it was great to meet up with them again. Best dressed prize, kindly knitted and donated by Joan Shearman, Linda’s mum, was won by Willie Huijs and his
grandaughter in their Mazda MX5 beautifuly decked out with Daffodil Logo, full racing harnesses, helmets and communication system.
The final Tally of cash raised for the Cancer Society was $2000 which was handed to Jane of the Local branch office by me, Peter. Finally you can be assured we will be back again next year with an even bigger better and more profitable event. I can assure you this as we have already secured a much more suitable venue for the start and finish. We have sourced a sound system which is a great relief to my lungs and larynx and the team are all ready to go once again, see you all there!

..Can’t beat this Aussie humour!! Two blokes living in the Australian outback saw a couple of jobs advertised by the Queen of England. She was looking for footmen, to walk beside her carriage. They applied and were very happy to be flown to London for an interview with Her Majesty. She says to them: “Because my footmen must wear long white stockings, I must see your ankles to be sure they are not swollen or misshapen." After they show her their ankles, the Queen says: “It is also important that you don’t have knobby knees, so I need to see your knees too.” Once she has seen their knees, she says: “Now everything appears to be in shape, so I just need to see your testimonials.” Nine years later, when the pair are finally released from prison, one of the blokes says to the other: ”I reckon, if we just had a bit more education we would have got that job!"
Alan Bates, Wanganui VCC Branch Patron As Alan is about to celebrate his 94th birthday it’s possible that many of you have known him quite a few years but you may not know all there is to know about him Alan started life in Ohakea and after a brief spell in Patea he moved, with his headmaster father, to the big city, Whanganui. After leaving school he was apprenticed at Linwood Motors the local Chevrolet agent in town. His apprenticeship was interrupted on three occasions when the government of the day decided he would be more useful assisting the army, twice, and then finally he “volunteered” for duty with the airforce. (Alan assures me this was a military step forward where you are in whether you like it or not) It all turned out for the better when he received good engineering tuition that also went towards the formal side of his apprenticeship and he tells stories of attempted Loop the Loop flights. (Attempted Loop the Loops sound much worse than completed ones!). Alan spent some time in the AA driving one of the very identifiable yellow cars and was introduced to the Vintage Car Club via this route, I think Burma Rally rescues may have been a feature. He then joined the Ministry of Works which in those day was in Ridgway St and across the road, close to where the AA testing station is now, was the Wanganui VCC , so he decided to join. An early mistake was pointing out that the teapot was mouldy which led to him being made responsible for making sure it didn’t get mouldy again. He maintained that vaulted position for 27 years I believe. It seems that space was a problem in those days as the chairs were stored on the truck which had to be wheeled out in order to have the room to place them on the floor. Other positions he held over the years as a committee member were Scribe to The Beaded Wheels, Club Captain and was part of the team that restored our prized Chevrolet Truck. It seems that our present truck engine is in actual fact one made from three.
As the club progressed and moved to various new premises Alan was promoted to leading working Bees, much more popular in those days, installing vital infrastructure such as sewage and septic tanks. Alan and Leonie, Alan’s late wife, became very involved with VCC activities not just locally but they also attended many rallies and also joined a group that visited the UK and even managed to visit the set of Coronation Street. (He says that was for the ladies, but?) Over the years Alan has restored various cars, and a bike, starting with a 1928 Studebaker Dictator, 4900cc a fine looking car. His other vehicles were a Veteran Royal Ruby, MGB GT and finally his present car a 1951 Austin Falcon, quite a rare model as it was produced for only 3 years. This was another total strip down and rebuild but has lasted well and as some of you will have seen has attracted Neil, Alan’s son to assist as navigator. (Neil is not quite the correct size for the Falcon and has been know to remove the rear window in order to stretch his neck)
Besides the car club, Alan is a very active member of our local do gooders; GOME, Grumpy Old Men’s Enterprises to those that don’t know; where he can be seen stripping electrical components that are then sold off and the money donated to many of our local charities. Alan is presently the Patron of the Wanganui Vintage Car Club and attends most, if not all of the club functions and Rallies, his family, sons, daughters and Grandkids are all involved with the club and he is an example to us all.
