Chairman’s Report Greetings all., spring has sprung. (Note from editor, at the time of typing this it’s P%$&ing down and my driveway is flooded. Is that the spring he’s talking about?) Spring, of course, is the start of the new rallying season so start polishing your vintages and classics. I had the pleasure of attending the VCC national AGM and delegates meeting in Blenheim last month with Neil and Edgar. The VCC is lucky to have a very dedicated bunch of volunteers throughout the country devoting a lot of time and effort running the club. We as a branch received a number of accolades re our rallies, runs and facebook page. For your calendars it’s our turn, in 2020. to host the VCC national AGM in Wanganui The MTA car show, (100 years of motoring) featured a number of our club vehicles on display with veterans to post 80’s represented. I attended the Palmerston North swapmeet and took the valiant + a trailer load. (I could have sold the valiant more than 20 times over) Great crowd and a fabulous display of vehicles. We, as a branch, decided to accept the challenge from the VCC Management Committee and run a Daffodil Rally in support of our local Cancer Society, what a good move
that was. What can I say, weather fantastic, a fabulous turnout, 94 vehicles and great time was had by young and old. Thanks to Peter and Doreen Hardy, plus their helpers of course for a very enjoyable day which coincidentally raised $1200 for the local Cancer Society. (see page one) Peter and Doreen have already agreed to run next year’s Daffodil Rally so watch this space. This month’s Sunday run is down to Shane and Nolene Hobman which I am sure will be an interesting afternoon so don’t be late. Late news, Dave McDermid is now our Health & Saftey Officer so if you have any, complaints, suggestions or advice on this subject please feel free to contact him directly.

Since I didn’t own a car, a friend offered to lend me his, provided I drove his attractive young wife to Paris to visit relatives. We were to be gone a week. At the German French frontier we were directed to a shack where a French official asked, “You’re car?” to which I replied, “No, a friend lent me the car for a week in Paris.” He started to look at our passports and said, “Your wife?” to which I answered, “No, my friend’s wife.” With a roguish twinkle in his eye, he returned the documents. “What a wonderful frined you must have, monsieur!” he exclaimed.

Wanganui Daffodil Rally
Well it seems that the idea of running a country wide Daffodil Rally was not a good one, it was a great one. Not all branches participated but those that did got a really good response, from the VCC members, from the other car clubs and from the general public. It certainly showed our branch off very well as we turned out 94 cars on what was a fabulous afternoon and we raised a grand total of $1200 towards our local Cancer Society. As normal most entries were on the day so when I arrived at noon to start preparation I was still confident of 50 entries, by 12:30 it was obvious things were going to get a little bigger and at 12:45pm we were preparing to photo copy more entry forms and instructions. The format was a Poker run with questions which meant there were three destinations
with questions between each one. In order to make things more interesting we also had three sets of instructions in order to try and discourage the habit of following the car in front. This led to many competitors pasing each other going in different directions. I do hope that all makes sense to those who were unable to join us and also to those that were.
We had 7 teams who managed to answer all 27 questions correctly and they were then separated by their Poker scores. Top four positions were Wozzo in his
1953 Buick Super, Second Murray Chamberlain in his 1969 VW Beetle, third
were Rod & Heather Sklenars in their 1929 Willys Whipet and fourth was Lee Spring in his 1975 Morris Mini. There was also a consolation prize awarded to Roger Mariott and his Mazda MX5 I think the strongest point from the day was that everyone enjoyed the event, had a great time and we managed to raise $1200 for our local Cancer Society. A large part of our sucess was due to the assistance we were given by the local press, many thanks to River City Press, Whanganui Midweek and Whanganui Chronicle you did us proud. We also had sponsors, Ed & Hinemoa at H&A Press, Neville Gorrie at the Grand Hotel and Rob & Linda at Rob O'Keeffe Joinery, thanks to all. Help on the day came from club members and also Geoff Lawson, Robert Jounay, The Hardy family and of course the kitchen helpers who were also surprized at the number of attendees. I would strongly recommend, to those who attended and those who could not, that you keep an eye open for the Daffodil Day dates next year as we are already making plans for an even bigger turnout in 2018 and even more money being raised for a very worthy cause.

After Quasimodo's death, the bishop of the cathedral of Notre Dame sent word through the streets of Paris that a new bell ringer was needed. The bishop decided that he would conduct the interviews personally and went up into the belfry to begin the screening process. After observing several applicants demonstrate their skills, he decided to call it a day when a lone, armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringers job. The bishop was incredulous, "You have no arms!" "No matter," said the man, "Observe!" He then began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment, convinced that he had finally found a suitable replacement for Quasimodo. Suddenly, rushing forward to strike a bell, the armless man tripped, and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below. The stunned bishop rushed to his side. When he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure, drawn by the beautiful music they had heard only moments before. As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, "Bishop, who was this man?" "I don't know his name," the bishop sadly replied, "but his face rings a bell

AGM – held in Blenheim 11 – 13 August 2017 EXECUTIVE MEETING. Health & Safety - each Branch should have Safety Action Plans for all Rallies and other events, involving members of the Public. Most of it is common sense. Guidelines are being circulated. Subscriptions - these are being sent out for the new financial period . In our case it will be VCC sub plus our Branch Levy of $40 plus GST. - October 2017 to Sept 2018. Remits - Remit No 1 concerning the meetings of Executive - One meeting at the AGM and the other in March to be in Wellington agreed. Remit No 2 was a notice of motion to ensure that Branches had sufficient time to discuss notices of motion and provide submissions before closing date carried, Constitutions. All branch constitutions are being checked – to ensure that there is continuity between Branches and VCC Constitution. There will be a template available later , but I think that our Branch is compliant with all requirements. Membership. There was a of of discussion over the number who resign each year; deaths and resignations amount to 400. Branches should discuss and check as to why members resign. It may be Subs are too high , or financial constraints, or we do not make members welcome to meetings and rallies. David Yorke presented a discussion document on changes that may be required before an on-line membership application can be established. At present there are too many differences between Branches. Eg levies go from $10 to $63, we are in the middle group with $40. Another reminder that if a member has Vero insurances under the VCC scheme and then resigns, then the policy may be invalid and all benefits lost. There has been research into the most successful motoring events in NZ - The three main events are – Brits on the Beach at Whangamata, Americana in Taranaki, and Art Deco in Napier. All have fixed sites for the events, and run over 4 to 5 days. VCC Events have much to learn from these success stories. Also Motor Home Assoc has 75000 members and we think that we are doing well with 8500. It was suggested that VCC should look to promote a TV Program such as the Hot Rod Show and Classic Restos to promote interest in the Club. Many attendees spoke in glowing terms of our Burma & Veteran rally 2017. Already groups from Wellington and other Branches are planning on touring and ending up in Whanganui January 2018
AGM - Saturday Financial - reports accepted and Auditor approved. Budget approved. Management Committee - the only change is Kaaren Smylie (from Bay of Plenty) has replaced Paul Collins.as North Island Club Captain. Notice of Motions - The main problem is not enough people bothered to cast their vote and so both were lost. Any change to the Constitution requires a 75% majority and this was not achieved. Even more important only approx. 1650 members voted out of 8500. The Categories of vehicles had 78% of the votes cast against any change. Post 80 vehicles - discussion on when it applies. Basically it is 30 years after the year of registration or manufacture, which in some cases makes it 31 years before the vehicle is eligible. Difficulties arise when a 1981 manufacture is first registered in March 1982. So dating starts from 1 January after the registration which in this case would be Jan 1983. There is a fair bit of confusion over this. International Rally 2021. The Rally Director has resigned . At this stage it is uncertain whether the event will proceed. Management Committee are to consider possible changes and alternative organisation before a final decision is made to proceed or cancel. Andrew Anderson spoke on “if we repeat what we have always done – then we will continue to Fail” It seems as though the “atmosphere” of the events at Art Deco and others is the reason why people keep going back to the same event. They are also shorter and costs are less. John L Goddard Trophy was awarded to the beaded Wheels team. The group have given a total of over 100 years of voluntary service to the production of Beaded Wheels .A magazine that we can all be very proud of. Registrars report. - Rod Brayshaw - always very interesting. VIC Cards now total 10809 and a very significant factor in discussions with Government Bodies. Members also benefit with WOF and Registration, as vehicles have to be considered in the light of the date of manufacture. Eg Ian Chamberlain’s Reo (1906) or the Rover (1914) cannot be treated the same as a vehicle manufactured in 1980. Braking AND steering are all different over the years. VCC – Internet Pages and Facebook. There is a lot of information available to members if they care to look. Whanganui Branch Facebook pages are being used as a great example of what can be done - Well done team. Next AGM will be held on the second weekend in August 2018 at Napier. From the desk of Jim O’Neill, Wanganui Branch Club Captain I would like to thank those who turned out, once again, to distribute the annual Daffodil parcels throughout Wanganui.The Cancer Society really appreciate us assisting them in what is quite a large undertaking, 106 separate deliveries this year, and it is a big part in t h e i r fundraising, $6600 value of goods delivered. One for the Bikers One of our members, now famous for a very intriging Austin 7 special held together by one cold and one hot tap, used to be famous for another reason, his collection of Britsh Motor Cycles. John Miles was, in those dyas the owner of a 1952 Matchless G3Lc 350cc, a trials competition machine. This bike had history, it was stolen in the early 60s and then buried. Ths frame and forks had beeen cut up and dumped and all that was left was the motor and gearbox, the wheels and the petrol tank and even they were pretty well shot. It took quite a few years to collect the spares needed to complete this project as this model was quite rare in New Zealand especially as John intended to keep it as original as possible. The frame is slightly shorter, about 2 inches and the ground clearance is slightly higher than a standard rigid frame to improve the handling. The newest bike in the foursome is the 1966 Matchless P11, a factory special. The Yanks wanted something with more horse power, can’t blame them for that so they took a Matchless G85 scrambler and a Norton Atlas road bike apart and built the P11 from the componets. What they created was basically a Matchless G85 CS rolling chassis powered by Norton Atlas 750cc twin engine. This prototype was handed to Matchless in the UK along with an order for 200 to be exported to the USA. They were also marketed as a Norton P11 or, in the case of a few, the AJS, the bikes were a real point and hang on sorts of beasts. Joining John’s two Matchless models are two AJS bikes, one a 1961 AJS Short stroke 18CS 250 ex works machine was reputedly ridden by works rider Tim Gibbs before being passed on to his brother-in-law, Ken Cleghorn of Palmerston North. Ken was a force to be reckoned with as those who competed with him will testify. When the bike first came to New Zealand it was rated at 600cc. If you were good enough to hang onto it not much would catch it in its day
Somewhere slong the line the bike was put back to 500cc. John suspects this may have been a condition of sale as it is now well known that the 600cc motors were a secret at the time.
The second AJS also a 1961, a MD31 650cc ywin that rather than being standsrd was built bits from under Johns workbench. The frame is a standard Matchless, the tank from an Aussie police AJS and the forks, which are the correct type, are from Mexico via the old favourite, ebay. Running on non standard wheels the front brake is from a Benelli and a conical rear hub came from a Triumph with an 18 inch rather than 19 inch rim. While the bikes carry different names they share the same parentage. Matchless, and later, AJS, were both owned by the Collier family that, over time, added Norton, James, Francis Barnet and Villiers to its portfolio to form AMC, (Associated Motor Cycles) Here in New Zealand the AJS and Matchless Owners Register of which John was a member, caters for those who have an interest in machines of the marque.
2017 Shiny parts Auction The Shiny Parts auction was once again very well attended and as usual brought out the best, and worst in some of our members.First our thanks to Graham Hawtree who volunteered, or was he pushed, into being our auctioneer for the night, thanks once again Graham. There seemed to be a lot of golf clubs involved this year. I believe, but may not have this quite right, the first set were bought by Eilidh, or was it Angus, who donated them to the the Forsyth family. Then a very similar set of clubs appeared on another table that were purchased by the Pithethleys who donted them to the Forsyths, you may notice a pattern emerging here. This went on throughout the night culminating in the Forsyths taking home the clubs, but did they? I received this anonymous email late on Wednesday evening with the following information. “The Pitkethleys of Raine Street now have a lovely one off Driveway gate feature to come home to..., complete with assorted small useless stainless pot highlights.”
Highlight of the night was the award of the Charlie Berntsten Memorial Mug to Evan Forsyth, presumably for leading the families’ battle throughout the evening
The Benefits of Walking Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $2000 per month. My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell he is. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again. I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing. I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks & haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there. Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate. The advantage of exercising every day is so that when you die, they'll say, 'Well, she looks good doesn't she.' If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,......just getting over the hill. We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. AND Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.
