Chairman Bruce’s notes Greetings All. 6:45am Sunday morning. Yesterday Rob O’Keeffe, Jennifer and I took a large tandem trailer to the Manawatu Swapmeet at Manfield. Very pleasant day, excellent crowd and good takings for the day. It’s always good to support our neighbouring club and spend some time with fellow members from all over NZ. September Sunday run was very well supported and the place of interest was Grant Rivers’ shed of personal memorabilia. If you didn’t attend you missed a very memorable afternoon. (Oh and by the way the winner was me with Bill James navigating) Thanks Shane and Noelene for organising the run. (See report in this mag) Ford Model A Day run. Jennifer and I attended in our vintage. Good run and group in perfect weather Darn, just heard the 7am news, the All Blacks just won! The new defibrillator is now in the clubroom and Peter will be showing a training video at the November monthly meeting. We all hope that it remains in its “Brand new” condition but it’s great insurance to have it on standby. These defibrillators are very very simple to operate as you will see in November. October Club night had a fabulous turn out with a number of new, prospective or not often seen faces present with the return of Jim O’Neil, good to see you back on deck Jim. The evening started with an entertaining talk and display by Wendy Bullock. She spoke about period dress for your car, for Art Deco and Wanganui Vintage Weekend Functions. Wendy is offering to assist members at the cllubrooms to make or alter clothing items etc. Next we had Tony Haycock, 2021 Vero International Festival Director who had driven from Christchurch to speak to us about the 7 day event in New Plymouth.He gave a very informative presentation and he had all the answers afterwards. This event in New Plymouth is only 2 years away. His presentation was my launching pad to motivate club members to plan for and participate in this event.
Wanganui is the closest branch to New Plymouth, no ferry just a three hour trip in your vintage and you are there. Less than 100km per day and only 6 nights of accomodation. Start saving now, no excuses as the cost + mileage wise this will be Wanganui VCC members best chance of ever attending a large gathering of this type. We are looking for 700-800 entrants and I will be expecting 75+ from this branch 28th October run by Toni Jenkins. 1pm start at the clubrooms. November 7th Club Night is the “Night Trial” by Rob O’Keeffe have your pencil and paper at the ready for an entertaining night. 1st of December Wanganui Jockey Club 170 year celebration. I don’t need and more cars, we have enough Veteran/Vintage + PVs for this parade and display. We have limited space. Christmas Parade is now on 8th December and we require a dozen cars, Call Frank or I if you’re interested Looks like the busy season is here.

Letter to members from the National President Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring – New Plymouth 2021 As I mentioned in my recent Beaded Wheels column, the Management Committee is fully committed to this event going ahead. I am therefore pleased to advise that Tony Haycock has been appointed as Festival Director. The Management Committee will be having a more hands-on role with the 2021 event, hence the appointment of a Management Committee member as the Director. Although Tony is currently National Speed Steward and is well known for his travel and journalist endeavours, in another life Tony has experience in event management and recently has been involved in organising major motoring events for overseas clubs. We have taken on board the concerns and comments from many members about the future of our International Rallies and Tony has come up with a new concept (see below) which is exciting and innovative and I have no doubt that with Tony’s enthusiasm and experience it will be a very successful event for our Club.
Diane Quarrie National President Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring - New Plymouth 2021 A new beginning and whole new concept for our premier International event. Forget everything you thought you knew about VCC International rallies. For 2021 we have a totally new concept for a totally new style of rally. Shorter, sharper and more bang for your buck. This is THE old car, bike and truck event you will not want to miss. I can promise you a week of motoring, entertainment and activities, the likes of which you have never experienced before! We start the Festival with a massed arrival in New Plymouth on Sunday afternoon from the north and south, so you have the weekend to get there. We will then have four motoring days - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. So, what's happening on Wednesday? You might be thinking you can have a day off, and if you want to you can but I don't think you will want to and I'll explain why shortly. The four motoring days will see all entrants on the same route. If some of us are going to Hawera on day X, we all are. You will get to see all the cars, the trucks and the bikes, every day. No more travelling with the same group of vehicles every day while the other 4/5th of the rally has gone somewhere else - your mates included. Until now, there have been no National Rallies in the same year as an International. 2021 will be very different. Wednesday will see the National Veteran, Motorcycle and Commercial rallies taking place. For the other VCC categories which currently do not have a National rally, don't worry – there will be something for you too. Rally headquarters will be the heart of the Festival and there will be good food, good drink, and plenty of entertainment right there - the ideal way to sit down with friends after a great day of motoring to tell lies about what you have been up to. At the same time, the New Plymouth Festival of Lights will be taking place at Pukekura Park, and this world-renowned spectacle is both free, and only a couple of minutes walk from HQ. The public display will be a twilight event, and Friday night will see the final function, giving everyone the weekend to get back home for work. The proposed date at this stage is 17th to 23rd January 2021. The new format is something which has never been done by the VCC before and is the result of listening to comments from members and previous rally entrants over several years. It will be a gathering of the most diverse range of New Zealand and overseas motoring heritage ever to have been assembled in one place.

Shane and Noeline’s Sunday Run Well another lovely day for an afternoon run, load the car full of Grandkids and set off on Noeline and Shane’s mystery tour of Whanganui. How many times can you go round a roundabout? More than you thought I’ll bet. Didn’t hear of anyone getting lost but certainly we had problems with “No Grandad, dont take the seventh exit” but we did anyway. Stop off was at a fabulous shed, every time we visit a shed I feel ashamed and indequate. This
one owned by Grant Rivers, his wife Fiona and the rest of the family was one to put all of the others to shame. It wasn't only what was displayed but the way it was displayed and the attention to detail throughout. It’s the little things that count and the shelf which just about circles the whole not insignificant shed is supported by goodness only knows how many conrods, all individually screwed to the wall. I presume it’s this attention to detail that has helped the family achieve such a string of succeses both for themselves and also for their national and international clients. The whole visit had our members enthralled for all sorts of reasons, even down to the retro kitchen where Doreen spotted a biscuit barrel identical to the one my mother still uses today in the UK.
After the visit we again set off on the mystery trail and on our return to the clubrooms we were then interrogated with various question, “How many Supermakets?, how many bridges? and a few more.
Prizes were then duly awarded, well Lollies were handed out, Bill James, Bruce were up there, Ian Chamberlain also at the front and a few consolation prizes/Lollies were also distributed. Another great afternoon out!

Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a local cafĂŠ. When they sat down, one of them discovered that the salt shaker contained pepper & the pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the two bottles without spilling any & using only the implements at hand? Clearly this was a job for Mensa minds. The group debated the problem, presented ideas & finally came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw & an empty saucer.
They called the waitress over, ready to dazzle her with their solution. "Miss," they said, "We couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt & the salt shaker‌. “ But before they could finish, the waitress interrupted, "Oh! sorry about that." She leaned over the table, unscrewed the caps of both bottles & switched them. There was dead silence at the Mensa table. Kinda reminds ya of the government, doesn't it.

Thank you to everyone for a very interesting and entertaining afternoon. Our next Club Run will be on Sunday 28 October 2018 – meet at the Clubrooms at 1:00pm for a briefing with cars leaving at 1:30pm. Please bring some afternoon tea and leave it in the Clubrooms and this can be enjoyed at the conclusion of the Run. Entry forms are now available for the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 20 January 2019 – please complete your Entry form and send it through as soon as possible. If you are not able to enter the Burma Rally but would like to help on the day please let me know. 1.2.64 Definitions for Pipes as amended per Government Gazette 6784A/45297/BZ/a1 1. All pipes are to be made of a long hole, surrounded by metal copper or plastic, centred around the hole. 2. All pipes are to be hollow throughout the entire length - do not use holes of different length than the pipe. 3. The ID (Inside Diameter) of all pipe must not exceed their OD (Outside Diameter) - otherwise the hole will be on the outside. 4. The pipe is supplied with nothing in the hole, so that water, steam or other stuff can be put inside at a later date. 5. All pipe is to be supplied without rust; this can be more readily applied at the job site. NOTE: Some vendors are now able to supply pre-rusted pipes. If available in your area, this product is recommended, as it will save a great deal of time at the job site. 6. All pipe over 150m in length should have the words "LONG PIPE" clearly painted on each side and end, so the contractor will know it's a long pipe. 7. Pipe over 3000m in length must also have the words "LONG PIPE" painted in the middle so the contractor will not have to walk the entire length of the pipe to determine whether it is a long or short pipe. 8. All pipe over 1.8m in diameter must have the words "LARGE PIPE" painted on it, so the contractor won't mistake it for a small pipe. 9. Flanges can be used on pipes. Flanges must have holes for bolts, quite separate from the big holes in the middle. 10. When ordering 90 or 30 degree elbows, be sure to specify left-hand or right-hand, otherwise you will end up going the wrong way. 11. Be sure to specify to your vendor whether you want level, uphill or downhill pipe. If you use downhill pipe for going uphill, the water will flow the wrong way. 12. All couplings should have either right-hand or left-hand threads, but do not mix the threads, otherwise, as the coupling is being screwed on to one pipe, it is being unscrewed from the other. 13. All pipes shorter than 3mm are very uneconomical in use, requiring many joints. They are generally known as washers. 14. Joints in pipes for water must be watertight. Those pipes for compressed air, however, need only be airtight. 15. Lengths of pipes may be welded or soldered together. This method is not recommended for concrete or earthenware pipes. 16. Other commodities are often confused with pipes. These include; Conduit, Tube, Tunnel, and Drain. Use only genuine pipes
