Chairman Bruce’s notes Greetings All. 28 October was Toni Jenkins Sunday run and it was well supported on a super day. A good interesting run won by Wendy and John Bullock in their Model A Roadster Pick Up. Thanks to Toni and her helpers and thanks to Pete for the story and photos. The November Emerson night trial went without a hitch. The numbers were down which is always disappointing to an organiser, and Rob O’Keeffe (last year’s winner) put on an excellent and interesting run. How many Chairmen have you seen walking around a service station full of customers, and around the Avenue, carrying a raw egg on a desert spoon? As people approached me with a grin on their faces I just said “Don’t ask!” and carried on. Shame! And the reference to the Club members’ dilapidated bridge and the whiskered troll underneath! He will keep! The winners and next year’s organisers are Ed Boyd and Ian Chamberlain and Siobhan. Well done! During supper, Peter showed some 10 minute footage (not without some difficulty with all this modern technology) about the usage of the defibrilator which has now been installed in the entrance of the Clubrooms. I am expecting all members to become familiar with and know how to operate this machine in an emergency. St John will also be speaking to us on one of our Club nights so all members will be up to speed. 8 November saw special birthday greeitngs to I - AN - C who is turning 8T (No name or age!) The restoration of the year and items of interest is on the Club Calendar for December. A number of vehicles are being worked on so we look forward to seeing them. Bring along your items of interest also. It will be the same format as last year but voting will be done during the meeting.
The Christmas Parade is on 8 December. Please assemble in Cook Street at 1pm for the 2pm parade. Period dress and some decoration for the vehicles would be appropriate. As many cars as possible please. Don’t forget the Working Bee this Sunday, 17 November at the Clubroom, 9am to 12:30pm. Also Linda O’Keeffe’s Ladies run on 18 December. More lady drivers please. Thanks to Jude Reardon (wife of the late Mike Reardon) and Lucas Industries who donated a large number of Lucas parts and repair books. The Burma Rally and Vintage Weekend is around the corner. International Model A Day Run This all began when a group of us, prompted by Chairman Bruce, went over to Manawatu Branch's Club Night back in April. After the formal part of their club night ended I got talking to my friend and fellow Model A owner Peter Robinson . He suggested that we should celebrate International Model A Day with a Model A run. I thought that would be a geat idea so he gave me the job of coming up with a destination and venue that would work for both Wanganui and Manawatu Model Aer's. International Model A Day was to be celebrated on Saturday September 22nd so I had plenty of time to think about it. After a period of deliberation I thought it would be great to do a run to the Historical Rangitikei Homestead “Maungaraupi”. To help with this I asked Neville Rhodes from Marton, and it happened that he knew the owners of “Maungaraupi” and he was able to organise the visit. So the Mid Island Model A Club Run for International Model A Day was organised. Peter Robinson got in touch with Manawatu and Horowhenua Model Aers and I chased up the Wanganui ones. The only other thing that was needed was a fine day. We were lucky with the weather Saturday September 22 dawned a fine day with a slightly cool breeze perfect for Model A motoring. The Wanganui team left from the Corn Market at 1pm and with others joining along the way, headed for the Museum in Marton where we met up with the Manawatu and Horowhenua contingents. Then we set off on a pleasant journey through the Rangitikei country side to eventually arrive at the homestead where we had a shared afternoon tea. Following this Rita Barbra gave us a wonderful talk and a most extensive tour of Maungaraupi homestead. We had a great turnout 23 cars in all one of which was a Chevrolet, but then you need an oposition car just to remind one how good Model A's are. Everyone enjoyed the day, no break downs, and we believe because of date / time differences we were the first Model A group in the world to celebrate the day.

2018 Emerson Night Trial This years night run turned a little different than normal, we were all handed an egg and a spoon, very kindly we were also handed a pair of rubber bands which help a little. We were expected to carry the egg and spoon in the accepted manner whenever we left the car to obtain the answers to the clues we were given along the route. (This was not well received by all as our Chairman, Bruce, was peaved his bridge had been criticised and he was expected to rummage around the Z station balancing his egg and spoon like a five year old!) Our journey over a fair proportion of the town included a stop at Furnique to demonstrate our ability to walk with our legs apart, sit on a stepladder and sit on a chair. (Maybe you had to be there to appreciate the actions) Points were then awarded, 25 max if using the rubber bands and 50 if competing naked, ie without the rubber bands. We were awarded 48 points and don’t know where the other two disaapeared to. We did pay our bribe in the manner of a stolen sween as we had been advised a bribe of food or drink would probably help. All in all a very pleasant tour round town made better by being a little different. Points were tallied up after the sheets were handed in by the participant balancing his, or her, egg and spoon up to the end. (Our journey went reasonably well as our differences were few, if not too for apart) Prizes, eggs surprisingly were then handed out by Rob and Linda and Ed Boyd and his crew Ian, Siobhan,) were declared the winners and given the Emerson Cup and the honour of setting next years run. Doreen and I were second, norrowly avoiding setting next year’s run. Also in the prizes were Sue Voss and Angus Pitkethley and Allan Bates, and Bill and Heather James and dog.
Toni Jenkins Sunday Run Great turn out, which is always encouraging, and we were given very clear and precise instructions on what were expected to do by someone who declared herself qualified to do so, so off we went. Well just before that I made an observation that whilst some of us are doing our bit for the planet others are still driving cars that are keeping vast swathes of the countryside short of sunlight. Should we think of impossing some kind of handicap if your vehicle covers more area than your lounge, just a thought? Back to the run things went well, right, then left ,then right, no that was left, no you were right it was left. All, or maybe most of the clues were concerning letter boxes, or things in their vicinity. Now I’m not one to snitch but when we reached the spring box, yes it confused us a little, there was a box with a number in it, so we photographed it, using our phone Bruce and went on our way. We did not, as I believe someone did, remove the said piece of paper in order to prevent others from obtaining that number for their sheet, tut tut. The idea, it seems was to fill in your answers on a crossword type matrix on the back of the clues, this then gave a japanese word, I don’t know why we needed a Japanese word as I thought we had plenty but still I digress, We filled ours in and handed it back when we finally found our way back to the club. It seems that 4 of the participants managed to extricate the particular Japanese word so the decision was handed to our illustrious chairman, Bruce, to decide on a winner. A very impressive certificate was then handed over to them for their efforts. Now I don’t want to spread rumours but Bruce did choose his old friends John and Wendy Bullock who I am sure were the most deserving of those of us that actually got the answers.

Thank you Toni for the entertainment with the ‘crossword style’ of competition – well done to John and Wendy Bullock for their win in the event in which some 25 vehicles took part. A great afternoon all round. Our next Club Run will be on Sunday 18 November 2018 for the Annual Ladies Run being organised this year by Linda O’Keeffe– meet at the Clubrooms at 1:00pm for a briefing with cars leaving at 1:30pm. Please bring some afternoon tea and leave it in the Clubrooms and this can be enjoyed at the conclusion of the Run. Entry forms are now available for the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 20 January 2019 – please complete your Entry form and send it through as soon as possible. If you are not able to enter the Burma Rally but would like to help on the day please let me know. Don’t forget the working bee at the VCC Clubrooms on Saturday morning 17 November 2018 starting at 9:00am. Finally please remember that our Christmas Raffle has now started. Please bring along any items you would like to contribute to the hamper to any of our runs, working bees, meetings before and up to our December meeting when the draw will be done. A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from San Diego when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, "Are you going to San Diego?" Focus on Dave McDermid David McDermid, one of our present Committee members, is very well known to some of you but not so well known to others. Dave’s claim to fame is the restoration of two of the icons of the Whanganui River, The Wairua and the Paddle Steamer Waimarie. Dave has always had a penchant for Model As since he was 15 years old but we will come back to that. Dave is Wanganui born and bred and on leaving school identified that engineering was his intended way through life. He started out at Steel Boats Wanganui, the forerunner of Qwest, and then went on to Wanganui Engineering as a Fitter / Turner. He was involved in some of the biggest projects Wanganui has developed, Dry docks and the 100 ton Waipipi Buoy that was built and then carefully slid into the water at Putiki slip. Dave was given a book, Rapids and Riverboats on the Whanganui River and as there was still a riverboat plying its trade on the River, The Waireka, it caught his attention. He became involved with the Waireka and was lucky enough to journey up to Pipiriki, the Riverboat’s main stopping off points on the journey to and from Taramaranui, he was hooked! Dave was intrigued with the influence the River, and specifically the River Boats and he got involved and made trips up to Pipiriki, the main mid river stopping point when Hatrick’s boats transported international tourists in the late 18th century and early 19th. Both the Wairua and the Waimarie, old Hatrick River Boats, were laying full of river silt close to Hatrick’s Wharf, and Dave, along with Mark Campbell, Kevin Clark, Roy Harkness and a few others had an idea they could raise the Wairua, the smaller of the two vessels and refurbish it. The Wairua, although a steam boat, had been converted to Diesel back in 1914 and seemed to be the more sensible of the two to refloat as it was more manageable, even though it had been laid up since 1937. Work began and with a few slight setbacks the Wairua was finally extricated in 1987 from the hold of the river silt that had been holding her captive. After being removed she was placed on a firm standing and the restoration was started.
Whilst working on the Wairua and seeing the success, thoughts of recovering the Paddle Steamer Waimarie did not leave David’s thoughts and again with a team it was decided to hold a public meeting to see just how much interest there was in raising the PS Waimarie from its resting place alongside where the Wairua had lain. A great amount of interest was shown at the meeting and the Mayor of the Day, Mayor Charlie Poynter chaired the 80 or so attendees. This interest was not surprising as Waimarie had been the pride and joy of Alexandra Hatrick the man was was responsible was opening up the Whanganui River to the world and had a close connection to the town’s people as she regularly ran day trips to Hipango Park. The result of the meeting was that a trust was formed to extricate the Waimarie from the silt and start its restoration. Massive fund raising was started, Sausage sizzles, memberships and a very successful application to the National Lottery fund got the project up and running. She was finally pulled clear in 1993 which was the first stage in a very long haul in making her sailable again. The restoration and extension of the present Riverboat Museum was a major project in itself but due to the drive and determination of Dave and his hard-working pack she was made ready for an inaugural sailing at midnight, 1999 to welcome the new millennium, a fantastic achievement that will some beating. Right, enough Boats and Rivers, what about Dave’s cars? As I mentioned at the beginning Dave, has always had a fascination for Ford Model As. When he sold the Wairua he had the time to start work on his Model A interests. We have all seen Dave and Mihi looking like royalty up on top of the 1930 Ford Model A Standard Roadster, a beautiful car by anyone’s judgement. This car was bought by Dave in New Zealand and has been in regular use since. His current project is a 1931 Model A Ford Standard Coupe, this restoration is well on the way and I eagerly awaiting its inclusion in a restoration of the year. Latest acquisition is, yes you have guessed it, a Model A, but this time it’s a rare 1929 Model A Ford Closed Cab Pickup, it’s in the pipeline but but maybe a little further up the production line. It’s not actually the number of Model As in this shed it’s the attention to detail that is obvious throughout. When a tool is needed it is not off to Supercheap it’s can we make one here and usually the answer is “Yes, of course”. Now is the shock and horror story, there is a Dodge Victory 6 Sedan also in there somewhere but no date on that one yet. Perhaps that’s another story for the Rivet somewhere down the line.
