Chairman’s Report Greetings and compliments of the season to one and all. As there was no Rivet in December, there’s a bit of catching up to do! There was a great turn out for the Restoration of the Ye a r o n o u r December Club Night. (see photos), with 73 members being present. There were 5 entries in the car category, 5 motor bikes and 2 tables of items of interest. Congratulations to the winners and to all who entered. Mainly to Peter Whitton, overall winner for his 1961 Daimler SP 250 and Brett London for is Norton Commander Motorcycle. Items of interest shared between two entrants, Rob O’Keefe with his 26 Buick woodwork and Bernie Svendsen with his Wartime aircraft and pilot. Rob O’Keeffe, Peter Whilton and myself joined up with 5 other friends and went off to the Bendigo swap meet in Melbourne. We were lucky enough to spend the first few days viewing sheds full of a collection of unrestored cars. I say lucky as this a private collection and not normally for public viewing. On a farm in the middle of nowhere we saw Mercers, Stutz, Romer, Napier, Peugeot, Lancer, Fiat, Bentley, Bugati, Cadillac and more, all veteran and vintage and in their original conditions. Derek Haycock was lucky enough to be able to copy the woodwork of his 1912 Fiat in exchange for a 1912 Fiat radiator we took over with our luggage, bringing the wooden copies back in a surf bag.
It was the best and most interesting collection I have ever seen and when I get old and grey I’m going to go back and live amongst this collection but not with Ivan, the engineering scientist owner. I have only ever seen calendar pictures of most of these and never in their unrestored state. A great week but the others all got me into a hell of a lot of trouble and got me into all sorts of strife. Don’t ask! A thank you to all the Club members who took part in the Christmas Parade and who flew the Vintage Car Club flag. There was a large crowd, a great selection of floats and good weather. Jim and myself, (on behalf of Peter and Doreen Hardy who were doing time in a UK freezer) attended the Cancer Society Awards in December and recieved a 2017 Bronze Partner Certificate for our donation of over $1000. This is for our involvement in the Daffodil Day distribution and also for organising the Daffodil Rally in August. We will be continuing our involvement this year. Thank you also to the volunteers who sold programs for the Cemetery Circuit event on the day. There were 40 cars on the New Year’s Day Bulls Run with an enjoyable outing and lunch at Mt Lees Reserve. Wellington Anniversary Weekend, (20, 21 and 22 January, so this weekend) is upon us and we are still taking entries for the Burma Rally. Let’s continue our support of the Vintage weekend by joining in the Wheels on Victoria Car show on Saturday, cars in place by 9am, let’s have at least one car per member and more would be great. This event leads onto the Classic Cruise where we tour the town to show the public that we appreciate them supporting us. Two Cruises one short, and yes you have guessed it, one long. Meet at Mitre 10 Mega car park at 4:30pm, buy your draw ticket for $5 and off you go. Ticket Holders must be present at the Grand for the draw. All cars are welcome and there are no restrictions on age, size , colour or condition. Both cruises end at The Grand hotel for the draw and prizegiving. Contact Keith Turner or Peter Hardy 0212723444 Club night on 7 February will be Vehicle Identity Card Evening so bring your application papers, ownership, 3 identical photos, reciepts, old photos and any other paperwork you have for your cars and any articles you may have proving your car is the year and
model you claim it to be. Bring your car too if this is possible. Shane Hobman and I (both vehicle ID reps) will be there to help you. The March club night speaker will be Ross Travers who is coming from Fordell with the sprint boat. Ross is a New Zealand Jet Boat champion The January Club night and BBQ was really well attended and a great time was had by all. A bit of rain didn’t even put us off, we just moved inside. On a sadder note, we have lost four of our VCC family recently- Lottie, M e r v e Wa r n e r s p a r t n e r, D a l e Clouson, Brian Turner and Jenni Farrer. We mourn their passing and our thoughts are with their families at this time.

The 2018 Gumboot Rally
Well how privileged we all were, visiting not only the Gumboot Capital of the world but also the Carrot Capital of the world and all in one day. Nature had promised a shower or two but unfortunately they didn’t arrive before the start time, but then again neither did some of the entrants, you know who you are! Excellent turnout with a fair number staying overnight in order to attend the celebrations at the Gumboot Manor on the 31st, others travelled up on New Year’s Day morning. Off we went onto what turned out to be a very pleasant morning drive with only minimal dust and quite good traction and in no time at all there we were in Ohakune, the carrot capital of the world, ready for lunch with all amenities close at hand.
Afternoon instructions were passed over and off we went again, traction not quite so good on this section and my navigator did get a little excited at one stage, mind you, she is only 10 years old. We called in the Tangiwai Disaster Memorial, good job we did as there was a card dispenser as we left. It was then that the promised shower arrived but it did not dampen any spirits. Again, in no time at all, we arrived at Jack & Lynsie Horton’s Residence as they were again hosting the presentation and the BBQ, thanks again to them for their hospitality. The impending rain brought the BBQ forward of the presentation which is against the normal tradition but all worked well. Dave & Lyn Austin were pronounced winners on the day by some sort of jiggery pokery but no one cared as everyone won a prize and some even won the raffle prizes as well. A great day out and thanks to Robert Bains and his crew from Taihape for a great start to the very promising new year.

A verse by Merle Vaughan (in the style of Pam Ayres) Mr. Jones was a businessman who never had been wed. He didn't get on with women — got on with his job instead. One day when he was talking to a friend from out of town he mentioned a little problem that had really got him down. So the next afternoon at the office when the work was done for the day, he looked across at his typist and plucked up the courage to say, "And now my dear, there is something I want to ask you about. What do you do with your panties when you have worn them out?" She answered with a giggle as she put down her pad and pen, "Well, if I can find them, I wear them home again!" Shopping with Children A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly behaved 3-year-old grandson. It's obvious to her that he has his hands full with the child screaming for candy in the candy aisle, cookies in the cookie aisle and for fruit, cereal and soda in the other aisles. Meanwhile, Grandpa is working his way around, saying in a controlled voice, "Easy William, we won't be long . . . easy, boy." Another outburst and she hears the grandpa calmly say, "Its okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there, boy" At the checkout, the little terror is throwing items out of the cart and Grandpa says again in a controlled voice, "William, William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool, William." Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says to the elderly man, “It’s none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying 'things would be okay. 'William is very lucky to have you as his grandpa" Thanks," said the grandpa, "but I'm William. The little s---'s name is Kevin.

The director at the retirement home invited a hypnotist to do a program for the residents one afternoon. The residents were highly skeptical that he could really hypnotize them but they were willing to go along just to see if he could. The hypnotist took out a very beautiful gold pocket watch that he said had been in his family for over six generations and began swinging it back and forth, back and forth before their eyes. Suddenly the chain on the watch broke and the watch shattered all over the floor. “SHIT� exclaimed the hypnotist. It took two days to clean up the room and they never invited him back.
