Chairman’s Report Greetings Earthlings Well daylight savings had finished and that means more time in the shed maintaining or repairing the bit that fell off during the summer. There are a number of restorations being worked on at the moment! I’m looking forward to seeing them finished. The turnout to Club Nights and Sunday Runs has been very pleasing and we have also increased our membership by 7 new members over the year. Welcome aboard all new members, I hope you enjoy the ride. We had 40 cars assemble on 18 March at the Club Rooms to be issued with a “Hand Gastetner” copy of my instructions for our Sunday Run. We went off to the new Sewage Treatment Plant, Linda and Rob O’Keeffe’s ongoing restoration of a ’26 Buick and finally to Kelvin and Kerri Pratt’s. Kelvin and Kerry are the new owners of a 1926 Arrol Johnston formally owned by Wanganui Club member Denzil Dassger in the 1970s and ‘80s. A rare car indeed and we are lucky to have it still in New Zealand. You will probably never see another one. Members heard it running and now it is registered and has a WOF, ready for their daughter’s wedding. I’ve had a steady supply of VIC forms but want more please. Just fill them in and get them to Shane or me, please. The March meeting of the National Executive was attended by me, Neil as our representative, and Ed as a member of the National Committee. We were well entertained at our April Club Night by commercial fisherman, Murray Watson. See Peter’s report in this Rivet. This month’s run (April) is a scatter run organised by Peter and Doreen Hardy. Should be interesting. On 18 April, a number of your committee are going to visit Palmerston North VCC on their Club Night. Any members interested in coming along, please phone me. We will be leaving the Club Rooms at 6:15pm and will pool cars and travel to PN for the evening. We are guaranteed an interesting night. In May, one of our valued members, Geoff Lawson, is going to talk. He has a range of lifetime interests so could be speaking about anything. Don’t miss it and men, if you have a hat (preferably a bowler or a top hat), wear it! Ladies, a nice hat of some sort.

We have a Working Bee on Saturday, 20 May. Please bring working tools, ladders, trimmers and whatever else you think of. The June Rally entry forms are now in the Rivet. Please fill them in and get them to Linda asap. And finally a big thank you from Jennifer to all the Club members for the phone calls, visits, baking (yum), veges, fruit etc. It has been much appreciated. She has rcovered well thanks to me and has just started back at work.

I went to the liquor store yesterday afternoon on my bicycle, bought a bottle of Rum and put it in the bicycle basket. As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bicycle, the bottle would break. So I drank all the Rum before I cycled home. It turned out to be a very good decision, because I fell off my bicycle seven times on the way home. Supplied by Jim Baird

This rally is open to vehicles as defined in the rules of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) Eligible entrants must be current financial members of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.), or overseas residents who are members of a recognised Antique Motoring Club. The entrant must either be the driver/ rider, navigator or passenger of the vehicle entered. Invited guests are deemed Non Competitive and should not interfere with the competitive section of the rally. Actions that may bring The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) into disrepute will incur disqualification. We advise that you carry a fire extinguisher. Any entrant found using any electronic navigation device may be disqualified. Late entries will be deemed as Non Competitive. Murray Watson, April Club Night Speaker. Well those of you that missed last Wednesday’s monthly meeting missed a treat. “Best speaker we have had for a long long time”, I heard afterwards and that may have been an understatement. Murray Watson, Whanganui’s last commercial fisherman

certainly had us all enthralled with his history and explanation of inshore fishing Whanagnui style on his vessel Vedette II. He gave us various tips on survival and also on conservation that maybe provided an angle that we would not have thought of without his expert insite. Who would have guessed that a silver spoon would have been included on a commercial fishing boat? Who knew that we could not spot sharks on our fish finders as they have no swim bladder, may come in useful sometime. Sue Voss was very happy to receive this snapper, after it was filleted of course, when she won the competition and was also awarded her very own “Whitebait Filleting board”, probably the only one in the club! Thanks Murray, may the tides and weather stay favourable for you for the rest of the season and we know to avoid the “Spikey Dogs” at all costs!

Bruces and Jennifer Ardell’s Sunday Run Another very interesting Sunday run from the Ardells that attracted 40 plus cars to turn out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. First stop was to the new Sewage Treatment Plant and a stroll up the hill. Quite enlightening but let’s give them time to get it up and running.

Second stop was at Rob and Linda’s workshop to see how the 1926 Buick Master restoration was going. Surprise of the day was a stop to visit Kelvin Pratt and his very memorable 1920 Arrol-Johnston. Let’s hope we see it on the road at the next Rally.

From the desk of Jim O’Neill, Wanganui Branch Club Captain Our Annual Rally is rapidly approaching and for those who cannot rally I am desparate for marshalls. please contact me as soon as possible. Pete Hardy’s run on the 15th of this month will be interesting. Dick and I had the honour of trialling the route as we will be away in Arrowtown that weekend and we can highly recommend it, be there promptly at 1pm for the briefing as you are off at 1:15pm for a one and a half hour run and don’t even think about coming back late. Make good use of your time and have a great afternoon. Motor Cycle section have a Rally on Saturday the 21st so lots of bikes on display at the club rooms from 08:30 onwards and if you would like to volunteer they would welcome you I’m sure. Anyone who would like to volunteer to set a run next year please let me know, if your inexperienced we can always pair you up with someone to assist.

Jim My wife hosted a dinner party for all our friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for ages and everyone was encouraged to bring their children along as well. All throughout dinner my wife's best friend's four-year-old daughter stared at me as I sat opposite her. The girl could hardly eat her food for staring. I checked my shirt for spots, felt my face for food, and patted my hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at me. Finally I asked her, "Why are you staring at me?" Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior, and the table went quiet, waiting for her response. The little girl said, "I'm just waiting to see how you drink like a fish." Supplied by Jim Baird
