Club Captains Report The stretched Gymkhana will now be held Jan 26 organised and run by your committee, the venue yet to be confirmed, we have a couple of options. Sept club night was a huge success both with the ladies and the gents thanks to Gaye, Alec, Ellen and Sandie for a great show. The Austin rally saw a good turnout of 6 Vintage Austin’s, 6 flying A,s and 10 honorary Austin’s. The Peter Smith memorial trophy was won by Gaye and Francis Pointon driving their 12/4, at least 10 years since that car had been out, it certainly excelled on this occasion, its first major run with my distributor conversion instead of the old mag! Oct club night is a pre 50th rally briefing we will touch on straight line navigation for those taking the competitive route and any other relevant topics. Please make an effort to attend Oct 13-14 our 50th anniversary weekend - good weather and cheer has been ordered. Please support this event and make it a huge success— a tremendous amount of work has been put in by my committee & everything is coming together nicely. Francis 7
STALE FUEL PROBLEMS Over the past few months I’ve had a number of vehicles to attend to with fuel problems. Usually they won’t start after a period of no usage, however not everyone is aware of the corrosion damage which can occur. As a general rule 3 months is all you can safely leave fuel and have no problems. I’ve just attended to a vehicle which had been parked for 3 years with a half full tank of gas. It cost around $2500 to get the vehicle going properly and repair the damage; carb, fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel lines, and fuel gauge sender, all needed remedial work. The corrosion in the fuel tank above the fuel level was unbelievable . As a general rule I drain the fuel out of any vehicle not in general use as soon as it goes back on display. This includes draining the vacuum tank if fitted. As an example of how bad the fuel can get, I used some stale fuel in my motor mower thinking it would do no harm. It ran ok but very smelly. However after I turned it off and had smoko and came back to start it, I found the inlet valve had stuck open and it had no compression. The solution here was to heat up the engine with a heat gun really hot until the valve snapped shut, then empty the tank, install new fuel and some injector cleaner to remove the gum which had made the valve stick! Then run the engine to clean things out. Lesson learnt! I just hated the thought of dumping all that fuel! Another job I’ve just done, was to fix an overhead valve engine that the owner had started on stale fuel, run it for a short time and then turned it off . The next day he went to start it and bang bang bang 3 bent pushrods caused by 3 stuck valves. Same problem again. So be warned, don’t start your 8
engine on stale fuel, drain the tank and run fresh. As for the problem of tank corrosion I’ve found filling the tank with a molasses and water solution and leaving for a couple of weeks, then adding some lead shot and swishing it around works wonders. But remove the tank first! My friend Barry tells me he has a lot of bikes with similar problems to fix, so be warned. Francis Pointon. Pointon Motors

Peter Smith Memorial Rally A chilly wind and overcast skies precluded us from travelling Al fresco in our convertible Mercedes. At least it wasn’t raining! After a miserably wet cold week it was great to get out and motor down to the Workingman’s Club in Greytown for the Peter Smith Memorial rally which is run by the Austin Registry. We were accepted as ‘honorary Austineers’ for the day along with a few other Club members. We joined a cheerful gathering of real Austin owners for a lovely morning tea. Some had travelled from the other coast and from as far afield as Feilding. It was great to catch up with some other VCC members who we hadn’t seen for some time. First away were the competitors who had chosen the ‘slower’ speed option. We had chosen the ‘fast’ speed of 37mph! Not really suitable for our car but we did our best to stick to it. The second instruction was ‘3rd left into Papawai Rd’ which confused a few people as the 1st left was easily missed coming almost immediately after turning out of the parking area. We found the instructions easy to follow and travelled across country to Featherston using Wards Line and SH53. At Featherston we followed the main road south around Lake Wairarapa. There must have been a lot of rain the previous week as many of the paddocks looked flooded. We counted the One Way bridges just in case we were asked how many there were en route. At the East West Access Rd we turned left and after crossing the floodway we travelled north again to Kahutara. At the school we surrendered our route sheets. This was the end of the timed section. Armed with our lunches we joined the other rallyists in the Kahutara school hall. After lunch further route sheets were issued and we headed back to the club rooms in Clareville. This part of the run was not timed. Carterton was particularly busy with its Daffodil Festival and some were lucky to catch sight of the steam train which is always a great attraction. Once again the tea cups rattled and gradually all the rallyists returned to, yes, more food. After the results were calculated the serious business began. A draw for lady entrants won by Beth Taylor and then two raffle draws both won by visitors. Finally the winners were announced in the various categories but the overall Austin winners 14
were our own Gaye and Francis Pointon. Well done. Thank you Will and Ruby for a enjoyable day out. You even provided some sunshine for the ride home!

The 2018 Daffodil Run The 26th of August was a beautiful sunny day and just the thing to drive Mathilde (our 1973 Mercedes Benz 350SL) around the Wairarapa with the hood down. As organisers we needed to be at the start point in Martinborough by 9:30 a.m. We made it but the extremities of the body were feeling the cold. The run did not start officially until 10:30 but when we arrived entrants were already lined up and waiting for us. The Cancer Society people arrived and started to collect the $5.00 per car. The rule was no money no instructions. There was no official entry so we did not have any idea as to how many cars would turn up. We weren’t too worried at 10:15 as we still had a good number of instruction sheets waiting for drivers. All of a sudden things changed and panic, on our part, started to set in. The Porsche Club, the VW Club and the Mini club all arrived at just about the same time. This was also the time that we ran out of instruction sheets. Initially we had decided that 20 sets of instruction sheets would be sufficient. Then, as we did not remember how many cars were on the run last year, we decided to up the quantity to 50. After discussions with Chairman Willie we doubled that to 100. When everybody had left the start point the 100 had disappeared and some entrants had to follow the leader to join the run. The run went from Martinborough to Greytown’s South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club where the entrants would get instructions to guide them to Carterton. When we passed the Greytown stop there was no room in the car park and the entrants had spilt over onto West Street for the mandatory stop. Initially the next leg to Carterton was to go up Lincoln Road but the powers that be decided that the railway crossing needed to be dug up and closed the road so a panic note was attached to the original instructions which took everybody up S.H. 2. Memorial Square Carterton was packed but everybody passed through on to the next leg to Masterton. The car park at Farriers was the final stop where we, once again, managed to fill the area. We would take this opportunity to thank the VCC Marshalls of the day :20

Without them disaster would reign supreme. All in all it was a great day – good weather, good roads and a good cause. To the entrants we can only say thank you for making the day such a success. A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC TO OWNERS OF 100 YEARS PLUS OLD VETERAN CARS Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco Weekend 2019 from February 14th -17th. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd Following the great response from the public to the 23 veterans we had in 2018 we again want to show them what the earliest cars look like, how they perform and where it all started from. We already have several early commitments including ADW first timers : a 1915 Locomobile, 1918 Twin Six Packard , Veteran Renault For 2019 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a 3 or 4 hour run plus a picnic lunch at an historic Hawkes Bay homestead. If there is sufficient demand there will be a special rally route for the early veterans (plotted by local veteran owners) to get you to the picnic on time. There will be a special prize draw ($250 of petrol vouchers) made from just the 100 year or older cars entered in the 2019 rally event.
