COASTAL RUN 2019
Sunday 13th of January 2019 Assemble at the Masterton Town Square carpark, Perry Street, Masterton from 9 a.m. (coffee / toilets, available at McCafe’), Briefing then, cars away at 10 a.m. Our journey takes us to the Castlepoint Resort, then onto Castlepoint Station for lunch. After lunch, courtesy of our hosts, Anders and Emily Crofoot, we will traverse the station farm track to “Otahome”, then make our way back to Masterton. We have an alternative return journey for those not wanting to do the track. Bring a picnic lunch and your camera. 5
Chairman's Report Well it's certainly been a hectic month with club functions. A good attendance by members on the Janice Groves Memorial run up the Bideford valley and over the top of Daggs road on the way to the Mauriceville Fair. Thanks to Simon O'Hara for organising the event. The winners on the day were Dave and Trish Clement for the Trophy and the Robyn Gold Navigators Spoon respectively. Barry Wells and David Henwood put together a very good Gold Medal Trial for the motorcyclists with perfect weather conditions after weeks of rain. With over 50 competitors Emily Wellbrock supplied us all with plenty of lunch at Tinui with a closing prizegiving dinner at the Services Club.
Xmas Lunch was enjoyed by 80 members at our place in very warm conditions after a short run led by John Clarke. Club Captains Report Another great Gold Medal Trial which attracted 52 entries, this year organised by Barry Wells & Dave Henwood & their wives. Overall winner was Howard Sims with Marion in the sidecar. This was Howards first ride with his artificial leg so an amazing achievement which was enthusiastically applauded at the Prizegiving/Dinner. Well done Howard! The Janice Groves Memorial Rally was again a run to the Mauriceville Fair which attracted 20 vehicles plus drivers, navigators & passengers. We were very lucky with the weather. Some members obviously don’t like the gravel so took the short route up the main road, which is disappointing when Simon went to so much trouble to organise an interesting run. Not to mention type up a route sheet etc. Our normal December Club Night became a late decision to screen the 50th video with only a small attendance. We did enjoy your antics especially competing in the Gymkhana! Contact the Editor if you wish to purchase a copy, available on memory stick, only! The Club’s Christmas Lunch on December 9th was well attended. After a short run organised by John Clarke we all enjoyed a pleasant meal in the sunshine at the James residence. Yes that was my sunhat you all ran over at Waingawa! Not a good place to stop with the barriers! (it was still there a couple of days later looking very battered) Coming events: January Coastal Run – a very popular event. I’ve previewed it already and its one not to miss.
The Stretched Gymkana – also in January – Willie has managed to get Solway Showgrounds. I don’t think you would find a better venue – get your entries in early. See you all next year! Francis

Janice Groves Memorial Rally A good line up of 17 cars gathered at the Masterton airport parking lot on a warm but overcast morning. Zig-zagging our way through the east side of Masterton, we headed towards Te Whiti, turning left over Lees Pakaraka Road. A couple more zig zags saw the convoy heading out towards Bideford. Some chose to veer off to avoid the gravel section at the end of Bideford Road. Those that stuck to the instructions found themselves travelling through some scenic valleys on not so used rural roads, which despite the previous weeks deluge of rain, were in good condition. At the end of Daggs road we turned onto Highway 52, which saw us heading south towards Mauriceville. At the Clarke Domain we joined the rest of the group and others from the club which had come out for the Mauriceville Country Fair. The weather behaved with only a light sprinkle of rain, and rising temperatures made for a warm afternoon. The fair proved popular with arts and crafts aplenty, great music and plenty of displays to see. Many chose to partake in the picnic atmosphere to enjoy their lunch. Mid-afternoon, the group headed back to Masterton with some cars stopping at Farriers Bar and Eatery for a cool drink and social time. An enjoyable day was had by all and I would certainly recommend a visit to next years fair if you have never been. The rally winner for the Janice Groves Memorial trophy was Dave Clement and his navigator Trish Clement, the winner of the Robyn Gold Navigators spoon, in their Austin A35. Simon O’Hara 10

REX PORTER MEMORIAL RALLY SATURDAY, 9TH MARCH, 2019 THE RALLY: The Rally Assembly point is at the Vintage Car Club Rooms at Clareville A&P complex Rally Briefing at 9.30am. First Vehicle away at 10.00am. This will be an all-day competitive rally and will include most aspects of rallying. The route will be approximately 100 miles long Entrants must bring their own lunch and thermos. Toilets are available at the lunch stop. The evening Dinner and presentation is at the Wairarapa Services and Citizens Club, 20 Essex Street, Masterton 6.00pm Drinks (own cost) 7.00pm Dinner and prizegiving REGULATIONS: The event is open to financial members of the VCC of NZ (Inc). Traffic regulations must be strictly observed. Each vehicle must be up to the Club’s accepted standards regarding general mechanical condition. At least one member of the crew must be a financial member of the VCC of NZ (Inc). Membership card must be available. Failure to stop at a check point will incur penalty points. We advise that you carry a fire extinguisher. Any entrant found using any electronic navigation device may be disqualified. 12

Gold Medal Motorcycle Trial On the 24th of November, the Club held the 36th Annual Gold Medal Motorcycle Trial. This event is the premiere motorcycle rally of the year in which riders compete for medals and the annual motorcycle trophies. The Weather Gods were kind and 50 riders headed for Tinui on two different routes designed to cater for different styles on motorcycles. The long route covered 100 miles taking in Carrington, Martinborough, Longbush, Westmere and Tauweru. The short route also went via Carrington but then diverted to Waihakeke, Parkvale, Gladstone, Lees Pakaraka Road and Tauweru, a distance of 60 miles, to lunch at Tinui. The afternoon run of 30 miles took riders via Langdale to finish at the Pointon Collection. Machines and riders spanned decades. The oldest bike was a 1914 Humber 3.5, expertly piloted by Ashley Blair of Wellington. I had assured him that there were no steep hills, (he didn’t go over Langdale), but he insisted that Hururua Road, Millers Road and the main road before Tauweru were, “very steep for a 104-year-old, belt drive motorcycle”. Point taken, well done Ashley! The newest bike belonged to Glyn and Cathy Clements, Fielding, a 1982 Honda CX 500 sidecar combination. Entrants came from Motueka in the south, to New Plymouth in the north. Many riders have been supporting the Gold Medal Trial for more than 20 years. Only 1 bike ended up on a trailer. Frank James, Wanganui, had electrical issues with his 1979 Suzuki, GT 125. There were no accidents, and no one fell off. Medals were earned by completing the timed section as closely as possible to the target time, determined by the average speeds set for the riders. There were 5 different speeds to suit the different bikes and to get all riders to the lunch stop on time. At Tinui, a delicious lunch was provided by Emily Wellbrock, as a Tinui school fundraiser. Thanks Emily! Timing was done to the second. Up to 60 seconds fast or slow earned a Gold Medal, 61-180 seconds a Silver and 181-360 seconds a Bronze. 1 point was scored per second fast or slow. Gold medal winners were – Howard and Marion Sims, Masterton, 1927 Harley Davidson combination, 27 points; Bruce Davidson, New Plymouth, 1963 AJS CSR, 37 points; Ray Clarey, Masterton, 1955 James Colonel, 53 points and Warrick Laing, Ohau, 1962 Norton 15
Dominator 99, 59 points.
Silver medals went to Dennis Palmer, Lower Hutt, 1939 Harley Davidson EL, 122 points and Keith Bramley, Wellington, 1972 Honda CB350, 155 points. Bronze medals went to Glyn and Cathy Clements, Fielding, 1982 Honda CX 500 combination, 202 points; Hal O’Rourke, Lower Hutt, 1952 Ambassador Supreme, 224 points; Willie Wood, New Plymouth, 1955 Matchless G3LS, 250 points; Peter and Christine Riddell, Masterton, 1952 BSA Golden Flash, 281 points and Dennis Young, New Plymouth, 1965 Triumph Daytona, 356 points. Howard and Marion Sims won the George Light Cup for the best overall performance with a combination AND the Glen Bull Memorial Medal for the best performance overall. Not bad for a first outing following the amputation of Howards lower right leg! The Ken Bull Shield went to Peter and Christine Riddell, awarded this year for the best performance by a Post-War, multi-cylinder machine. The other Class Winners were:

Wairarapa VCC’s Stretched Gymkhana Saturday 26th January 2019 Do you like the excitement of gymkhana style driving on grass? Would you enjoy the challenge of trying to navigate through a winding course? Can you meet the challenge of driving a course consistently, so as to maintain, as far as possible, the same time each lap? If you answer YES to all of these, then the Stretched Gymkhana is an event not to be missed. Note - this is not a “Speed Event”. Event outline: Driver’s briefing will be at 9:30am The event is expected to finish mid-afternoon BYO lunch and drinks The course will be between ½ a mile and a mile in length A bit like a classic gymkhana’s cones course, there will be lots of sharp turns on the course All drivers will have 3 (or more) timed runs over the course, after which the best time for each driver will be calculated (this becomes their individual target time). From then on drivers have to try and match their target time, with 1/2 the field dropping out each time, until a winner is found For example, if there were 16 drivers, once each driver’s target time has been determined (from the practice runs), all 16 drivers have another run. Then the 8 drivers whose time was closest to their target time would move into the next round. These 8 drivers would have another run, and the 4 whose time was closest to their target time would have another run etc.
Notes: This event is not a “Speed Event”. It falls under section 20 of the Branch Manual, as a driving test. Camping and Motorhome facilities are available on site.
