Janice Groves Memorial Run to Mauriceville Country Fair Sunday the 2nd of December. Starting Point is the Hood Aerodrome, Airport Carpark, Manaia Road, Masterton. Briefing at 9.40 a.m. Cars away at 10 a.m. This is a gentle meander through town and country ending at the Mauriceville Domain to enjoy the sights and sounds of the fair. Take a picnic lunch or partake in some of the foods available on the day.

Chairman's Report Gosh another months gone by already and the editors on my case for a story.! Recently Sharyn and I joined fellow MG Car club members on a trip to the far north. On the way up getting through Auckland's traffic maize proved to be easier than expected as long as you stuck to the outside lane the whole way and we managed to get over the bridge and onto the northern motorway without stopping. Four nights in Pahia followed visiting the usual sites etc. and then on to Kaitaia. A visit to Winston Mathews Vintage collection at Taipa which had something for all family, cars, tractors, household, musical, you name it, it was there. The next day was the Cape Reinga run and another private Ford collection owned by Peter and Judy Mathews. A fabulous display of trucks and cars covering all the decades from Model T's onwards. Our return journey via the Rawene ferry, Dargaville, Kaipara harbour viewing the Gibbs family's giant sculptures and finally back to Masterton. Now back to our club and with the final wrap up of the 50th committee we will be making a donation of $2500.00 to the Life Flight Trust. Again I must congratulate all members of that committee for a job well done. To those members who have been in hospital or unwell recently we wish you a speedy recovery. I note that some of you have NOT paid your membership subscriptions . A friendly reminder. Please note updated events calendar in this magazine and Sharyn and I are looking forward to seeing you at our place on the 9th for the Xmas Party. Club Captains Report With the 50th Rally & Car Show behind us and our final de briefing, we have been able to donate $2,500 to Life Flight Trust, which is the cost of flying one patient to Hospital. Perhaps if we had a good day next time, we will be able to donate more. Our November Club night attracted 26 people with an interesting array of shiny objects for us to identify. Plus we had a short talk from Willie about his MG trip north (in his MB not his MG!) On November 24th we have our Annual Motorcycle Gold Medal Trial event. Won by me last year, probably never to be repeated again, but I will be giving it a go. December 2nd is the Janice Groves Memorial Run to the Mauriceville Fair. Please support this event. A different route planned this year, won’t be quite as dusty as last year I hope. Our previously advertised December 3rd Club night has been replaced by this years Christmas Function – see next item. SUNDAY December 9th CHRISTMAS FUNCTION at the James Residence – see advertisement elsewhere in the magazine. Please remember to pay – cheques can be posted to P O Box 7. DO IT NOW! Will Holmes looks back on over 30 years With the Wairarapa Branch of the
Vintage Car Club of NZ. From my childhood days I have memories of many hours of enchantment as I climbed over and around the cluster of old cars, trucks and tractors which were haphazardly assembled under a row of old pine trees on my Uncles farms on Western Lake road. It seems that nothing ever got sold. It must have been these early experiences from which the early seeds were sown and hence my love of veteran and vintage machinery. Many years were to pass before I would become seriously involved in the collection, restoration and rallying of my passion. A few things got in the way. An apprenticeship, a marriage, the formation of a business and last but at no means least a family. But in about 1984 I made the decision to look for a vintage vehicle, which led to my first vintage cara 1936 Austin 14/6 Goodwood saloon and I have often wondered why I chose an Austin as it was not a marque I had owned previously. In fact the very first car I owned, at about 18 years old which was well before I made the decision to become a vintage car owner, was a 1927 Model T New Beauty. It was followed by Fords, Vauxalls, Jaquars, Holdens, Chevrolets, and Vanguards. All different models and years. Les Poole and Peter Fry were instrumental in getting me involved in the Vintage Car Club and the Austin Register respectfully, an involvement for Ruby and I which has given us boundless pleasure, particularly in the huge number of wonderful people we have met and the many rallying experiences which have taken us from one end of New Zealand to the other - and in fact to Vintage events overseas.

I still have vivid memories of the first rally we did with the local branch. Our restoration of the 14/6 was not complete but the offer of an Austin 7 Ruby had us on the road for our first rally. Unfortunately the little 7 didn't complete the journey and we ended up on the side of the road near Gladstone. No cell phones those days so the next vehicle to come by was Alf Lambess in his Austin 7 Swallow. There was no room in the car for another passenger but Alf had no hesitation in offering me a lift to the next farmhouse so I could call for help. This proved to be a rather perilous but thankfully short ride as I clung to the back of the little vehicle. It all ended well however. From that first experience we have enjoyed countless rallies and experiences in the vehicles which have at different times formed part of our stable. These include the next restoration - the 1924 Austin 20 which serves us to this day. Others include a 1936 Austin 18/6 (which is still in the hands of a branch member) a 1952 Austin Sheerline, to the most modern-a 1964 Princess Van Den Plas. A venture into the Veteran era gave me huge satisfaction and this started with a 1913 Indian Headstrom. This bike was used when a group of Kiwis entered the "Wheels West" motor cycle tour in 1987 which was based in Perth. This event which was spread over two weeks was put together by Glen and Maureen Bull. A huge undertaking which involved careful planning and serious fundraising. But for the twenty one New Zealand entrants and their partners what memories we have. The next veteran vehicle was a 1914 Talbot roadster which again was a major restoration but a very pleasant vehicle. Our Branch with assistance from a few Wellington and Manawatu members put together a National event, the "Mclean Motor Car Centennial Veteran Rally." This event attracted one hundred veteran entrants from throughout New Zealand. Following a number of runs over a few days all entrants journeyed to Wellington 15

Annual Lake Ferry Excursion 2018 marks the 38th anniversary of the annual Lake Ferry Excursion organised by the Sunbeam Car Club of New Zealand (Wellington). To make sure everyone has this date down early to save conflicts with other events, the Lake Ferry Excursion is always the 2 nd Saturday in December. This year that makes it the 8th of December. As always, we meet at the Fell Museum at 11am for an 11.30 departure from Featherston to Lake Ferry, where we meet to talk over lunch – or some wander across to the Lake Ferry Hotel for a pub meal. Please note that we meet at the big oak tree outside the Fell Museum at 11.20 for a driver’s briefing. If you are not the right person in your car club to receive this email, can you please forward it on to the correct person. Also, please feel free to send this on to anyone in other car clubs you think might be interested. We welcome all car club along on the day. We also welcome people who don’t belong to a car club. The day is about driving classic cars and meeting and talking to other enthusiasts – it isn’t about belonging to a car club. The hotel at Lake Ferry have confirmed they will be open and will have food available, or you can bring your own picnic lunch. In the past we have had English, American, Italian and French cars. We have had the Constructors Car Club, Corvette Club, Capri Club, Mustang Club and Early American Clubs as well as other smaller clubs attend.
