Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Well what an improvement in the weather, several frosty mornings for those who venture out of bed early enough. Thank you to Tony Brierley and his able Team for an interesting Club Run last month. It had me thinking about young and restless teens who have never driven on metal roads or narrow roads . This is probably what sets VCC members apart from those for mentioned people . It was certainly a bonus to still find roads not far away that are lovely bush drives. It has been a busy period for Ian and I getting all the compliance and applications for the Kairangi Hill Climb. This has been approved subject to the public advertisement of the road closure. Thank you to those Folks who have chosen to get their Venture by Email, I hope you enjoy the full colour, You are joining an increasing number of members. When I was “Public Relations Officer,” in a guide from Beaded Wheels, they suggested don’t begin by mentioning the weather. I think I can make an exception. I am so sick of this weather – it has been raining for a year now. Sorry farmers, us car people would like a draught! It rained on the weekend for the Steamfest but I was still pleased we went and looked. The Model T’s looked amazing all together and added to the event. I was told the Model T’s had raced the train to Te Kuiti and won! Graham Pate and I went to the AGM in Blenheim. This was my first AGM and Executive Meeting and there will be a separate report in this venture. I trust you enjoyed Club Night with our private investigator, September is a special night with 12 service badges to present and the Club’s newly appointed North Island Club Captain is coming to present these and to say a few words about the National Club and her role. Email communications are becoming very much part of our lives and as a Club we are depending on this form of communication more and more. Jan has been away so it was up to me to produce the recent updates bulletin. If you are not receiving these then please let me know. Introducing Aaron Kearney As part of an ongoing “getting to know your Committee “ I started last year we welcome one of our newer Members to the committee. Aaron Kearney was the first volunteer and here is his story Editor My name is Aaron Kearney and I hail originally from Whangarei, Northland. I have been resident in Cambridge since December 2016 and lived in Hamilton for 2 years prior to that, 18 months as a house master at Argyle House. I am an English teacher at Hamilton Boys’ High School. I was lucky enough in October 2015 to meet Kerryn and we became engaged a year later. We are getting married in November of this year, and her family are all from Cambridge. The majority of my family still live in Whangarei so SH1 is a familiar highway. My love of cars from a bygone age began at a very young age, and centred on my Grandad’s 1955 Daimler Conquest. To me, that car sounded, looked and smelt different. It lay under canvas in the garage and didn’t get out much, except when I pestered him to take me to school socials. The car has been in the family since new and the family story goes that it was brought over for the Royal Tour and wasn’t used so it was sold on. I am the 5th generation in my family to own it. It was sold to a cousin in Auckland and 4 years ago, I had the chance to acquire it. Talk about a dream come true! Since then, it has done a few weddings, and I was able to get it down to Hamilton on a truck in February last year. It is not exactly a first classic for a young man but I have been told I suit the car. I joined the Northland Branch of the VCC and was able to transfer to Waikato Branch when I moved down here, and had a mutual connection through Jeremy and Barb Brook as I had transferred Rotary clubs to Waikato Sunrise. Since leaving the hostel and moving to Cambridge at the end of last year meant I was able to attend more VCC events, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring for the Committee and offer my two cents. In my spare time I enjoy reading, films, Classical Studies, history and British comedy. I look forward to meeting more members as the year progresses and getting stuck in when needed. Thanks

VINTAGE CAR CLUB of NEW ZEALAND AGM held Blenheim 12th August 2017
Delegates from the 36 Branches plus executive members met Friday night to consider the business of the Club then Saturday to hold the AGM and at the conclusion finished the business matters with dinner on the Saturday night. Myself and Jenny, Marcia and Graham Pate made the journey and as Club Delegate it was great to have Grahams experience to guide me through. First off, there were two postal motions that came out to all members. One was to change the vehicle classifications; this motion was lost. The second was to delete from the constitution the requirement for a new member to be proposed and seconded by members on their application. The intent here was to allow online applications. This matter was also lost 43/67 and there had to be over 70% majority. The voter turnout was only 19%! As a Club, next time, we should collect the envelopes and mail them back, the cost of postage may have been a deterrent. Attending this meeting was a reminder we are part of an organisation with international connections. Recently some European Countries have moved to ban combustion engines in the next twenty years or so. Already there are “Pollution Free Zones” banning combustion vehicles by councils and communities. Recently, Australia banned all imports containing asbestos - this will stop the importation of a lot of old cars. These rules will gravitate towards us. The Vintage Car Club has record membership totalling 8628 members as at 30 June 2017. 13 Branches lost members – net 23 Branches gained members – net There was a net gain of 123 members total for the year. Waikato has 461 members, we grew by 20. 8
We are the third largest branch narrowly ahead of Bay of Plenty who grew 35 members last year. There was a lot of negative discussion about our membership and if I was a bit braver I would have said it was time for a pat on the back. There are some good people administering the Club – hopefully the guys who deal with the LTSA will get twelve-month Warrant of Fitness for forty-year-old cars across the line. I see I was using my Jag on the weekend whose warrant expired in May! I will tell the officer I am forward thinking if I get stopped. Couple of other things besides relevant tax clauses in our constitution, insurance, health and safety and Vic classifications. The Club has an Online Forum via the website. Have you tried it? Some interesting conversations. The Club has a Face Book page and would like some postings – check it out ladies! Canterbury Swap Meet will have wrist bands this year. You can purchase these online to save time at the gate. One day or three day passes available. Otago Club are looking to build an online database of books in their library. There were presentations for the Veteran Rally next year in Nelson, Easter Rally Waikato. Next meeting is March in Wellington.

Wednesday Wander Events Ahead Yes, the Wednesday Wander is out of hibernation. Perhaps we'll see you on one of our runs. That old car of yours needs W an airing anyway. September 20th. Clubrooms at 10.30am. Leave at 11am. Today we go to look at a steam launch in Cambridge that has been a few years in the building. Then we go to lunch at a cafe a short drive out of town. Thanks to Steve Payne for organising this one. October 18th. Meet at the BUS CAFE in MATANGI. 9am -10am A place of interest is next, and afterwards a $10 lunch at Cambridge Racecourse. Club run to Tahuna After a week of rain and cold weather the Sunday turned at sunny and fine just as Tony had promised so its hood down and off to the clubrooms. The cars just kept turning up. After some morning tea and the inevitable briefing which included lessons on certain hand signals which we had never known about the 36 cars left the clubrooms at one minute intervals. The instruction was that we not only had to find the silent checks but also had to say what road they were in. This of course meant that each road that we went down had to be recorded just in case there was a silent check as there was no guarantee that the road was named at the other end. In the end they were all named at the other end, but having done several of Tony’s runs over the years I thought that surely one road had a missing sign but he must have mellowed now that he is of age. The inevitable questions were there too, I understand that Judy was responsible for the gargoyle on the gate post! In the end the checks and questions stopped and we we told to enjoy the countryside. Just before Tahuna we turned onto a goat track, the sign said it all, no campervans or trailers, it was an enjoyable part but we were so glad it was fine. We did find out latter that a number of members who knew the area, and seeing the checks and questions had finished, missed this section out made a beeline for the Tahuna Tavern. That explained how so many got there before us to get the first dibs at the food. All up a very enjoyable run, so a big thank you to Tony and Judy and their helpers with whom none of this is possible Soft top

Joke Catholic Chauffeur After getting all of Pope Francis's luggage loaded into the limo at the airport (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still standing on the curb. " xcuse me, Your Holiness,"says the driver, " E Would you please take your seat so we can leave?" 'Well, to tell you the truth,"says the Pope, " they never let me drive at the Vatican and I'd really like to drive today." I"'m sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job! What if something should happen?"protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning. 'Who's going to tell?' asks the Pope with a smile. Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 205 kph(remember, the Pope is Argentinian and Fangio the famous racer was Argentinian.) " lease slow down, Your Holiness," pleads the worried driver, but the Pope P keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens. Oh, dear God, I'm going to lose my license -- and my job!" " , moans the
driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches; but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. I need to talk to the Chief,"he says to the dispatcher. " The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going 205 kph. So bust him,"says the Chief. " I don't think we want to do that. He's really important,"said the cop. " Continued on pg 19

OTOROHANGA STEAM FEST It is good when you make a 50/50 call and your decision turns out to be the right one. Sunday turned out to be the pick of the two days. We met at The Nest Café, Pirongia for morning tea or breakfast. We then headed for Otorohanga . We could see everyone departing down SH39 when we received a phone call from the Organiser to advise us that our allocated parking had been double booked. We were then advised to make our way to some alternative parking behind the council buildings. No sooner had we parked here we were confronted by another car club suggesting we find somewhere else. After a few circuits of the town some of us found spots here and there but not together, never mind. Thanks members for your tolerance. Organisers planned two handicapped races from Otorohanga to Te Kuiti between a Model T a helicopter and a passenger steam train. There were a good range of displays including vintage tractors, one make car clubs, static displays of steam vehicles etc. Plenty of opportunities to purchase ‘steam punk’ paraphernalia. One finely attired lady in steam punk dress we got chatting to was a past president of the WVCC, Paula…somebody? Over lunch we were entertained by a lively bunch of singing ukulele ladies.
