Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone What a blast, yes the 60th Anniversary was a great success . Thanks must go to the Organising Committee for coming up with the whole Museum theme and “Bertie”. Well there has been a summery feel to the weather and Labour Weekend was certainly “one out of the bag”. For those people who spent it away what a relaxing weekend. I was very fortunate to have divers in my camp who went “hunting and Gathering” and my long line which produced several nice snapper which were greatly enjoyed. My enforced non start in car events of late is nearly over with work proceeding nicely on all fronts. Andy (The Custodian of the Club rooms has asked that people contact him about using and setting up the Clubrooms for any event. Andy can be contacted on 07 8235712 or atepushrods@gmail.com. I was reminded the other day that it is less than 2 months until Xmas day, that is a scary thought. Be prepared and ready for Family time and maybe some holidays. Take Care!!!

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter Hi Folks Well we had a great turn out for Theo’s B.O.P. shed raid, fine weather and some interesting sheds to look through. Hopefully Theo can do some more in the coming year, just a hint?? Thanks Theo. The 60th Birthday celebrations went off with a bang, if you didn’t bother to go you missed something very special. A very big thank you to Ian, Colin and all their many helpers. November 10th is the Veteran Rally so if you haven’t entered yet you have only a few days to do so. The swap meet on Sunday 18th Nov. means all hands to the pump as this is our major source of income. So far there has been a great response to Jeremy’s call for volunteers but we can always do with more so if you can help give Jeremy a ring 07 824 1641 is the number. Sunday the 20th January is a date you should mark on your calendar Now. That is the date of our Gymkhana Challenge with the Hamilton Vintage and Classic Car Club. The Gymkhana will be held at the Kerepehi Domain. We Will Meet at the Railway reserve just north of Morrinsville at 10 am. Turn left at Horrel Rd just before the overbridge and from there we will travel to Kerepehi for a picnic and gymkhana. The Club will supply BBQ sausages and patties and you can bring drinks and a salad or whatever you want. We will be taking our Gazebo’s and flags and hopefully the Hamilton club will bring their’s and we will create a Gala atmosphere. So if you don’t want to compete come along for the Picnic and watch the fun. Tony. 4
S e c r e ta r y SECRETARY’S REPORT: Theo’s shed raid to the Bay of Plenty was a roaring success with some great visits, a movie about “Peking to Paris” wow what a journey, some beauty workshops visits and lunch under orange trees, a large turnout of cars and people, brilliant day. 2nd to the 4th of November is the far north tour, hope you have your entry form in by now. 10th November Veteran Rally. 16th to 18th November is the Motorcycle and swap meeting Auckland. 18th November is the Swap meet at Karapiro. 18th November all USA day car show at the classic flyers museum, Mt.Maunganui 21st November Wednesday Wander starting at Gordonton to Rangariri pub for lunch via a scenic back route and return to Hamilton on the other side of the river past the Huntly power station. Before you know it it’s December, 9th December is the Xmas run, 16th December Take the oldies for a ride at Resthaven, Xmas lunch at the Stags Leamington. 19th December Wednesday Wander. If you have not paid your membership you have missed the discount day, please if you pay bank to bank put who you are or your membership No. so CHCH. Know who the payment is from. C lu b C a p t a in Since my last notes, we have had a great time with our motoring events. We would have a complete run if the weather gods had turned off the rain tap. This would have saved the road slips that caused the road closure that ended our back blocks tour. All the events were so well supported and enjoyed; it feels we have the type and frequency about right. My survey will either confirm this, or we can make changes for next year’s calendar. As I mentioned before, when I sought Committee approval for my survey, it was suggested I get the feeling of members towards a building to house a hoist and other gear that most do not have and a space for a project, or projects. At this stage, the support has been overwhelming but a number of suggestions and thoughts have been raised. I’ll ask Andy and Paul to comment and/or answer them in the next Venture. The saying “There’s nothing new under the sun” came to me. The thought of a garage type building was approved by a General Meeting years ago. A survey of the then Committee was 6 in favour of a hoist or pit being included, and 2 against. It’s a pity it didn’t happen, but today with achievers like Andy and Paul, members will soon be able to enjoy a facility that an increasing number of other Branches offer. Back to more Club Captain’s motoring type interests. At our PV Rally that included a visit to the wind farm, we had to pass through private farmed land, so needed a briefing by the farmer. While talking to us, he kept looking fondly at the Lincoln Zephyr V12 and the Auburn, then saying there were two steep pinches and those with Austin or Morris vehicles should get a ride up. The two Morrie Minors were smiling at the top, even though they only had 4 of the thingy’s that make engines go! Our Club run in December is going to be more social. We will finish with a ‘Pot Luck Dinner’ at the Clubrooms. The run will be a ‘topless’ event, tin tops will have to have all windows open. Even if the weather forces the vehicle to be driven outside ‘The Rules’ a sheriff will be appointed to collect the fines e.g. a raffle prize for Club nights. Terry P 6
Motorcycle Our South Waikato Country ride on Saturday the 13th was well attended and as with our rides of late the weather was good, although a little cold for those that had travelled from Hamilton. One rider who was waiting at the club rooms before I got there at 7.45 was jumping up and down trying to get warm, when Bob and Jillian arrived saying they wished they had put on warmer clothes. The ride before our coffee stop at Arapuni was quite a long one and a few who did not have their route sheet in a ‘roller’ got a bit lost but the strong smell of the coffee soon had them back on track. Next stop was lunch at the Tokora Club which was as usual very good, and it must have been because every one was talking and having a good time, when someone approached me and said, it’s time to go and see Murray’s plane. We have seen this plane being built now for a few years and it was good to see it very nearly finished and all that is required is a bit more painting and the engine fitted. Murray says that all being well it will be finished early next year, cannot wait to see it flying he did say that he might take someone for a ride!! we will have to wait and see. Then back to Cambridge and to the Club House for an evening meal and a catch up on the days ride. I was asked did I know how far the ride was, I had not taken a check but asking around it turned out to be about 150miles. Thanks to all those who helped and our back up team Bryce, John and Ron for the loan of the trailer. Coming up next month there are a few things happening, see last months Venture. If anyone is thinking of going to the M/C show in Auckland please let me know and I will see if can arrange car pooling. We have arranged a Xmas Social run on Sunday the 16 December to view a collection of Old Railway Memorabilia which I have been told is really worth seeing, I will send out more details via email, please put this date in your diary. Barrie Grant 1933 - 2018 In 1946 Barrie Grant saw a new Ford motorcar. This was a defining moment in Barrie’s life as he then made his decision to be a motor mechanic and in particular to work on Fords. An apprenticeship started and the love of mechanical things continued from there and eventually Barrie and his brother opened Grant Motors, a Europa service station in Tokoroa. Some may remember the v12 Allison engine dragster these two built and campaigned along with the resulting stories. The dragster is now in the Southwards Museum in Paraparaumu During this time Barrie also developed and interest in old cars and motorcycles and started to restore a 1920s V8 Cadillac tourer, part way through this another restoration project appeared in the form of a 1930 V16 Cadillac opera saloon. To make way for the V16, the V8 Cadillac tourer was sold to Danny Ryan’s dad and later the restoration of this vehicle was completed by Danny Ryan. Over a number of years, the V16 was completed and many miles were covered in this including a trip to Australia. The V16 now resides in the Wearable Arts Museum in Nelson. Barrie also had a love of motorcycles and in particular Harley Davidsons and covered many miles in a Harley and sidecar combination. In latter years Barrie has enjoyed a E93A Prefect and his last restoration the 1917 Grant tourer, one of only a few in the world and also the vehicle he and Lynne last rallied in at the Easter Rally this year. The love of motorcycles never waned and only a few weeks ago he showed me his five year old Suzuki and two year old Harley, both have never been registered or taken out of the delivery crates. Over the 60 years of membership of the VCC Barrie has been an enthusiastic member particularly helping out many members with his vast knowledge of anything mechanical. particularly flathead Ford V8s or Cadillacs. He was also enthusiastic for the parts shed and a collection of old workshop equipment. About a month ago I was privileged to present Barrie with his certificate to honour his 60 years of VCC membership, something he was very proud of. Barry led a relatively simple life, never complaining, always positive about the current situation and above all a man of his word. As a reasonably close neighbour for a number of years, the bags of fruit left hanging on the front door, the regular visits to discuss all sorts of topics usually relating to the VCC or the recycled scraps of paper with useful info or tips on them will never be forgotten. I’m sure Barry’s knowledge, stories and sometimes obscure questions will certainly be remembered by those who have known him for many years to come. Sincere condolences to Lynn and the family from all VCC members. Greg Terrill 8

PV Rally - Oscar Hello, my name is Oscar and I am eight years old. My Poppa and Nana (Peter & Bev Taylor) took me on a very cool rally. They told me they were going on the PV Rally with the Daimler and asked me if I would like to come along. It was my first time on a rally and I got to see lots of cool old cars. We all met up at the club rooms and I took lots of photos and talked to the owners about their cars. I absolutely loved seeing all the old cars and it was hard to pick one special car. After we picked up our rally packs, the organiser Graeme gave us some instructions we all set off and began the hunt for silent checks and answers to questions that were to take us out on the back roads. It was an amazingly beautiful sunny day for a rally. The back roads led all of us to Raglan where we had a good lunch before we went on a long windy metal road up to the windmills. I really liked when we drove up there to the windmills. My Poppa’s Daimler started rolling down the hill when he forgot to put the handbrake on properly. After someone took one of the caps off we discovered that the windmills are anchored into the ground with great huge bolts. It was so windy up there I went to sit in Glyn and Robyn’s Holden while lots of others sheltered behind the base of the windmills. After the windmills we went down to a country school for afternoon tea and find out who the winner of the rally was. Then we all went off home after a lovely run in the sun.

Also if you could manage to bring some finger food that would be great thanks. Shifts are: 5.30-7.30am 7.30-9.30am 9.30-11.30am This is an excellent and easy fundraiser for our club which results in approximately $4,000 coming into club funds. It is also a fun sociable event. 12
Joke Yesterday I answered a knock on the door, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. "Good morning," said the young man. "If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners." "Go away!" I said. "I haven't got any money!", "I'm broke!" and proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed wide open. "Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration." And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto my hallway carpet. "If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder." I stepped back and said, "Well I hope you've got a bloody good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning. What part of broke do you not understand?"

afternoon tea. Back roads all the way (more or less). Thanks to Derek & Gaye Dixon (and me) for this one. December 19th. Clubrooms 10am. leaving at 10.30am sharp for Resthaven, Vogel St. Cambridge. Here we take the residents for a ride around the block. 10.45-11.45am. Then off to the 5 Stags in Leamington (behind the BP station) for xmas lunch at 12 noon. January 16th 2019. Our usual start to the new year is a picnic at Horahora Domain, halfway along Lake Karapiro by the low bridge, under the shade of the trees at 12 noon. 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. This was our branches red carpet event of the year, to celebrate the 60th birthday of our club. What a lovely site to see, fellow club members all dressed in their finery waiting to enter the venue, “The Magnificent Classic Car Museum”. At 6pm the doors opened and we were welcomed by “BERTIE” of Art Deco Fame. We were handed glasses of bubbles or punch, and then served canapés as the members mixed and mingled with the nearly 100 guests. At 7pm the doors into the main Museum opened and in we went. What a sight it was, the cars from the centre of the floor had been removed and in their place were the tables all set up for dinner. The table settings of Black and Silver looked amazing in the centre of the Museum. At each setting there was a bookmarker memento and a rug to use in case of cold, (it wasn’t cold) but we were able to take these home. There could not have been a better place to hold an important Vintage Car Club function than this Museum, being surrounded by shiny cars and car memorabilia. Bertie was the MC for the evening and he made it flow really well. Chairman Tony Brierley welcomed everyone, including our National President Diane Quarrie and her husband Geoff. A lovely meal was served together with wine on the tables which made for an enjoyable dinner. Between the Main meal and Desert awards were presented by Diane Quarrie. A 50 year Badge and Certificate was presented to Colin Wiseman. 60 Year Certificates were presented to John Bayly, Hugh Webley, Roy Rowe and Bob Blackwood. Then the 60 year Birthday cake was cut with the assistance of all the 60 year members. It was a lovely evening, the venue was great, and the members company was most enjoyable, making a well rounded evening. Our thanks must go to the organisers, Colin and Donna Storey, Ian and Jenny Patton, Brian and Lorraine Cossey, and Graham and Marcia Pate. Also a very big Thank You must go to Tom and Diane Andrews for supplying the venue. If you weren’t there you missed a very memorable night. “A HAPPY CLUB MEMBER” 16

Built up from two bodies and up to eight other chassis. A few updates such as12volts and S U fuel pump. 4 years full time work including professional panel work, painting, upholstery and hood on a non folding frame. Generator also needs connecting. Two brake rear wheels could need attention to bring up to present braking rules.
