Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Today we went on the first part of Theo’s Shed Raid. It was a good follow -up to our May guest speaker at Club— Russ Rimmington. The day started at the home of Russ & Edwina. What a lovely setting for a Picnic for us all. More on this event in later in the Mag. Heather and I had to leave early to see some dear friends Des & Val Harvey as they were celebrating their 50th wedding Anniversary. Well done to both of you!! Have you filled in your entry form for the Double 50 yet? This is the Waikato VCC premier event of the year. We should all be supporting this, our Waikato VCC entries should be strong and the “out of towners “merely filling the remaining spot . This is not the case, shame on you all. If you contact Tracey she may be able to squeeze you in but be quick!! That’s my rant for the month. Thank you for your support for me as Editor , for your ads and articles . I try to keep the magazine informative and with a little humour at times.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter ANNUAL REPORT TO AGM 2018
Hi All, This is my final report as Branch Chairperson as I am not standing for re-election at the forthcoming AGM. It has been a pretty full year commencing with the K M Ford introduced at last years AGM. THE “CAR� is nearing completion thanks to the diligent work of Reece and his team of helpers. I take this opportunity to thank these guys for seizing the opportunity and running with it. I sense the frustrations but when it is done it will be a tribute to your diligence, foresight and determination and something to be proud of. I do regret we did not, as a Club, make a donation when we had the opportunity and I have some difficulty reconciling this with the K M Ford being a Club project. . My other regret is falling of the roof in November which has made my life more difficult, but I have learnt a thing or two. I would like to thank the committee members for their support and contribution. To Jan thank you for all that you do and have done. Bev has bought our accounting procedures into the 20th century. Bozie has continued to produce our Venture Magazine and cop flack about the quality, quantity or the tone of the JOKES! Once he was criticised for not having any! All committee members have contributed throughout the year and I am grateful for their support. I am afraid for the future of the Club. Member participation has diminished, and one wonders what we are doing wrong or if it is true our members are getting older and there are a lot more distractions! I think our Branch needs to step up and change our name to represent the people and cars we now cater for. I think the National Vintage Car Club needs to follow suit. To be fair there are more members of the Vintage Car Club than ever, over 8,600 nationally at last count. 4
I hope we have bought you some interesting Club Nights over the last twelve months. We have had a Puppet Show, Banjo Player, the Big Knitting Needles, our Film, finishing the year with Russ Rimmington as speaker. We have had a full Rally year with the Easter Rally thrown in to the mix. We had a very good return from the Swap Meet, the Hill Climb was a bit wet and I missed the end of year Tour but I was told it was very good. We have updated our sound system and we have a dishwasher! If the Club doesn’t have nominations for the Secretary position and Chairperson, we will have a choice to run under the stewardship of the committee or go into recess. That would be a sad end to my term. IAN

Last month I mentioned that we had a frost, well we haven’t had one since, I must have scared them away, as in fact the weather lately has been quite warm. Great for Topless Motoring, I am talking about Topless Cars of course. Our lovely Mercedes has moved back to Auckland and in its place is a genuine Triumph Herald Convertible. This was the last car that the late Ralph Blyde restored. It should be back on the road soon so then I might organise a Topless run, cars of course. By the time you read this the Double Fifty Rally will be underway. I would like to acknowledge the enthusiasm and passion that Tracey and Wayne have shown as first time rally organisers. They have shown to us all that it is not experience that counts it is attitude, a positive attitude to the task in hand. After the busy weekend of the Double Fifty I thought a nice social outing for our Club run on Sunday 24th June would be the best. So we are heading over to Mt Maunganui for a visit to the Classic Flyers Museum. We went there about 10 years ago for a Club Run, so I think it is time we went back for another visit. Read the advert in the Venture. Don’t forget our AGM on the 13th June, come along, have your say and vote for the people you want to run your club for the next year. Also it is your chance to influence the Calendar of Events for the coming year. The Wednesday Wander Fans might need to come up with plans for the winter months, somewhere warm, with nice food and great coffee, come to Matamata. With winter coming maybe a Snow Run to the Mountain could be worth thinking about, we did one a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. If you have an idea for a Club Run or a weekend trip give myself or any committee member a call, we would love to hear from you. See you all at the AGM

Secretary’s Report Obviously, things are readying for winter, as I have no entry forms from other branches on hand, although the weather until now has been just a beautiful extension of summer. Excellent for top-down motoring, out seeing all the fabulous autumn colours. Something that I have recently had a reminder about, is the National Office List for Membership. This list is a conclusive(!) list of members, their contacts, and their vehicles. We are all guilty of forgetting to let the various contacts that we have, know about our changes in circumstances, and this is a grand example. You are all very good in letting me know when you make a change of contact, but are you equally good at letting HQ know of change of vehicle ownership? Many of the vehicles listed under your names are well out of date, which means that it is far less than accurate. If you have sold or acquired a vehicle in the last period of say 5 years, could you please let HQ know your current list of vehicles. This would enable a correct record of VCC vehicles held in the fleet. It has been a big job, but one that has given me heaps of satisfaction. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to get to know so many people and will miss these contacts.

The running of the 25th Mooloo has now pasted and you will have all read the reports and have heard all the stories of what happened. I would like to share with you some of the emails that have been received. Thanks to you and your team for the organization of the Mooloo this last week end. It is certainly gratifying to receive these as it shows that all the hard work that everyone put in was worth it. I forgot to mention that the Northland M/C rally is on the 19th of May and I know a few of us will be going, so will report on what took place next month. . Steve Walter asked if I knew when the annual Auckland Branch Fish & Chip run to Kaiaua was being held, it is on Sunday the 3rd June. “In the dark of the night we had a visitor to our March Club Night.” Our visitor were no other than Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands in their Ford Model T. They spent a bit of time with us then played a video clip of their escapades around the world in their in the Model T. They are raising funds to help orphan children in developing countries. This has been a journey thru many parts of the world. I have included their flyer on the next 2 pages . They have experienced the worst and best weather conditions and had a serious crash when a Truck hit them seriously damaging the Model T. We wish them well as they continue their “World Trip”.

The Packards trip to Wanaka Three Waikato Packard's made the trek to Wanaka in the South island for the 30th anniversary of Warbirds Over Wanaka. The plan was arranged for the Packard Club to tour through the South Island ending for the spectacular two day airshow held at the Wanaka Airport. The three Waikato Packard's were the 1933 Super 8 Victoria of Tom & Dian Andrews, 1947 Packard Clipper of Bob Pennycook & Steve Cochrane and my own 1928 526 Phaeton. We met up in Blenhiem with a total of 35 Packard and 13 other vintage or post vintage cars. The Packard's ranged from the 1926 big 8 Phaeton from the Nelson Wearable Arts Museum through to a 1956 Carribean Convertible from Lower Hutt and 1956 Clipper from the Packard Museum in Whangarei. Eight cars that took part in the tour were from America as the NZ organizers were able to have the event marked onto the Classic Car Club of America calendar. These cars included several Packard's, V 12 Cadillac's, a Buick and a Railton but most impressive was a well restored 1937 Cord 812 Beverley from Massachusetts, USA. A couple of cars were shipped over from Australia, one in particular was the car referred to as the Amelia Earhart car. Amelia Earhart for those who are note strong on their aviation history was a famous female aviator and in particular was the first female to fly across the Pacific. In 1935 the President of the Packard Motor Company gave to Amelia Earhart a 1935 Super 8 Packard Coupe, in recognition of her many aeronautical feats. Amelia only got to drive this car a few times as shortly after she disappear as a flight she took was lost, the plane and body were never recovered. This car was restored in Australia after having spent many years locked in America. Starting in Blenheim the joinery took us down the Kaikouria coast through the road works that can only be described as major road reconstruction a result of the damage from the Kaikouria Earthquakes...just by the way, this work is not just a repair job but rather a major reconstruction and in many areas cutting of a new road. Also the coast line through this area having been pushed up some 3 or 4 meters is very different than what I remember from previous trips. Amelia Earhart ‘s 1935 Super 8 Packard

Through Kaikouria, across Amuri Plain and onto Hanmer Springs with a night over at the Heritage Hanmer Springs Hotel. This initial 160 mile drive sorted out a couple of "glitches" for a couple of cars but overall everyone made the journey. Day 2 was a continuation of the trip across the South Island to Greymouth taking in a slight detour to see the pancake rocks at Punakaiki, and day 3 to Franz Josef. After a rest day the tour before headed to Wanaka for the main event...Warbirds over Wanaka.
The tour cars formed part of a static display at the Warbirds event. Of course at the Warbird event most interest was in the many older war-planes from WW1 and WW2 but also the F16 fighter jet and other large jet power warplanes sent to the event from Australia, America and even a couple of planes from Europe, all to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this magnificent event.The Warbirds event was two days of continuous fly-past by multiple planes, plane doing ground events as well such as the shortest take off and landing, Spitfire, P51 Mustang, Yak's, DC 3, the water landing Catalina, By-planes, helicopters and many others. Just by the way, the shortest take-off was 33meters....
In all the trip was a great success, the overseas cars are all on their way home and the event is now just a stack of photos and memories. But I can say this was an very enjoyable trip, the Warbirds over Wanaka Airshow is a magnificent event and is one that should be on your bucket list, I can highly recommend it. Wednesday Wander June 20th Well folks, it's Winter Drawers on, and the Wednesday Wander is going into hibernation again. What this means basically, is that we meet for lunch at a pub instead of battling the rain and the fog around the Waikato. Now I've talked to the nice people at the Top Pub in Morrinsville, and they assure me that the cook will be on board and all revved up for our visit. This is centrally located for all you enthusiasts on the far side of Matamata, or the other side of the river in Hamilton. June 20th. (and probably July 18th. Theo Shed Raid Hugh McInally Yes, I am guilty!! I have never been on a Theo Shed Raid which I’ve now found out is definitely my loss after experiencing the latest shed raid a couple of weeks back. I have heard that Theo has a reputation for shed raids and I reckon the latest one will only enhanced that reputation. Instructions were simple, meet at Ross and Edwina Rimmington’s Farm at Tamahere Drive, Tamahere at 11.30. What an estate, the drive in itself was longer than some of the rallies we’ve been on. The beautiful tree lined drive finally ended at the homestead. The first thing you take notice of is not only the beautiful copper roofed stone home, but the yellow De Havilland Tiger Moth parked in the dedicated hangar which was part of the main house. Every boys dream. imagine Landing your Tiger Moth on the strip in front of your house, wheeling it into the hangar, stepping from the plane straight into the house, every flyers dream. Wow!! By the time we arrived (and we were early) there was already about 5 cars there. Within half an hour there must have been well over 30 cars both modern and vintage parked on the paddock/runway. Theo greeted everyone and then handed the crowd over to Russ Rimmington who welcomed us and gave us a quick rundown on what was in the sheds etc along with the history of the farm. One shed contained a yacht called Sheila 11 that had sailed from the UK to New Zealand. I know that sounds no big deal these days but go back to 1911 and you have a different story. Keep in mind there was no modern electronic navigational gear to guide you, the best the sailor had was a compass. It took the owner Adrian Hayter 5 years to do the trip with it culminating on his arrival on the west coast of New Zealand with no food in the lockers. Apparently the book called Sheila in the wind makes for very good reading. Alongside Sheila 11 was a very, very early Austin 7 chummy sitting their patiently waiting for a restoration and in close company was another yacht also waiting for restoration. We wondered from the shed to the Chapel. Yes, the property has its own Chapel which was immaculately presented. By now everyone was setting up their seating arrangements for a picnic lunch with instruction from Theo that we had to leave no later than 1pm. As happens, we all congregated in our own little “picnic group” next to our cars. Lunch gulped down we continued our wanderings. Our meanderings through the lovely gardens found us finally approaching the Tiger Moth. What can I say, but a lovely iconic flying machine. Before I knew it, cars were starting up and heading out along the long drive, so time to move on.

Our instructions guided us to Morrinsville to Wilbur Brown’s residence. On our arrival we found Wilbur surrounded by a large crowd listening to his every word. It always amazes me how much gets done in what one would call a small two car garage and it looks like Wilbur’s garage is no exception. No offence on criticising your garage size Wilbur, but it’s a lot smaller than mine and look what you get done. Mine is a large garage and I get nothing done, so see, size doesn’t count. An hour later we were off again towards Matamata to Graeme McKenzie’s place situated at 1 McKenzie Place. We wondered down the drive and around the corner to be confronted by 5 Model T Fords and a replica Bugatti parked in a paddock. One of the Model T’s was a centre door model. There was a door on either side of the vehicle but the doors were situated in the centre of the car. Much discussion surrounded the reason for putting a door in the middle, which hindered both the front and back seat passengers when it came to entering and exiting the car. The conclusion we came to was cost. Ford saved the cost of two doors???? A lovely selection of Model T’s. Thanks Graeme. A short walk down the street to number 24 McKenzie Place and we arrived at Sue and Dallas McNeil’s residence. On entering the garage I came across what I would described as the tidiest workshop I had been into for some time. Up on stands was a Monroe Roadster (around 1915?) that Dallas was restoring for a client. He is also the proud owner of a lovely Packard. Make a note of the following. Dallas is also a restorer of steering wheels which is well worth knowing. Lovely freshly baked scones and cakes were dished up under the veranda, along with tea and coffee. I tell you what, we could do with that scone recipe when we are next asked to bake for the ladies rally eh? Theo thanked Sue and Dallas for their hospitality and also thanked the other families that had opened their doors to us. All the scones devoured we slowly drifted off for home at around 4. A big thanks must go to Theo for his effort in organising the day. Question; Does Theo drift out of the limelight for another year? No way!! As I write he is organising a shed raid around August over to the Bay of Plenty (Tauranga). Look out for it, I don’t think you will be disappointed, but I can assure you, you will be if you don’t get your butt over there in August. Safe Motoring

The same car for 82 years Mr Allen Swift– Born 1908– Died 2010. This man owned and drove the same car for 82 years. Can you imagine even having the same car for 82 years. Mr Allen Swift (Springfield, Massachusetts) received this 1928 RollsRoyce Roadster from his father, brand new as a graduation gift in 1928.He drove it up until his death in 2010…..at the age of 102. He was the oldest living owner of a car that was purchased new. It was donated to a Springfield museum after his death. It has 1,070,000 miles on it , still runs like Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition. 82 years– that’s approximately 13,048 miles per year (1087 miles per month). That 1,070,000 miles not kilometres. That’s British engineering of a bygone era. I don't think they make them like this anymore

Self Asphyxiation of a 60 year old Sixty years ago the Veteran and Vintage Car Club Waikato Inc was formed. In March 1965 the VVC Waikato became a branch of the Vintage Car Club of NZ (Inc). In the formative years, events were sparse and consisted of mainly monthly branch runs generally to places of interest, new restorations etc. When we transferred from Taranaki 31 years ago the branch activities consisted of three annual events, these being, Double 50 Rally, Ladies Rally and Veteran Rally. The remainder of the branch activities involved club runs, shed visits etc; all these events were well attended and members looked forward to these monthly runs. Fast forward to today, we have many more annual events, Double Fifty Rally, Veteran Rally, Vintage Venture, Ladies Rally, PV Rally, Mooloo Meander, Commercial Rally, Blue Smoke and Pedals, Hill Climb and the Swap Meet. We can add to this the National Open Day, plus a multiplicity of events which spring up from time to time, The trend is that the number of events is increasing, the work load for the few members who do put their hand up to help is increasing way beyond reasonable expectations and the attendance levels are dropping. In short, the branch is slowly suffocating from events and options. It is my belief that the number of events needs to be reduced per year as the branch can’t sustain more than one event per month. However, there is a need to continue to hold some events annually, for example, the Double Fifty Rally and the Swap meet. My suggestion is to have a maximum of six annual events and six “club runs” per year. The following would be the annual events: Double Fifty Rally: history, branch main event Swap meet: good fund raiser and well supported Mooloo Meander: well supported event National Open Day : a nationally coordinated VCCNZ promotion for the club/ branch The following could be considered when deciding on the regularity of other branch events. By using a nominal figure of 20, 15,or 10 entrants the remaining events could be rotated on a two or three year cycle. 20 or more entrants: annually 15-19 entrants: every two years 10-14 entrants: every three years We need to ask ourselves if all of the calendar events we currently offer are relevant or needed, is it possible to discontinue some? Could some events be held on the same day or in conjunction with others? An example could be the Mooloo Meander and the Veteran Rally as it appears there doesn’t appear to be many motorcyclists who are also veteran owners, so no one would be disadvantaged with this scenario. This reduces the number of main events and creates space for the older style branch runs that were in fact very similar to what we now call Wednesday Wander. Branch Runs These could also be rotated over a two or three year cycle as well and could consist of: Gymkana event (annually) held at venue similar to Morrinsville AMP Show Grounds. Rides could be offered to fellow branch members as I am sure there are a large number of members who haven’t had a ride in a vintage or veteran car. Perhaps this could also be open to the public. Weekend away 19
Shed visit Christmas party (annually) Mansfield Picnic (annually) Branch Open Day (2 years) One charity event (annually) Two club runs (annually) Twilight run Summary Six annual events Six branch runs per year Only one event per month Where possible, programme the events to a specific day, for example, the third Sunday of the month Aim for sustainable quality not quantity There will be some members who will feel aggrieved or left out with this, however long term some changes need to be put in place. It is up to the members interested in particular events to attend those events to ensure they continue. The branch committee then has a responsibility to ensure that the calendar does not become cluttered with additional events. If you thinking we should continue with the status quo, give the following some consideration. Why have we not had a Club Captain for the last few years? Is it because the expectations and the work load of this role are too great? Is it realistic to expect the branch committee to attend all branch events when there are so many on offer? Are you able to attend more than one branch event other than club night on a regular basis? Conclusion It is important to remember that we are a hobby organisation that relies on volunteers to organise events for each other. As with most clubs there seems to be a trend for greater expectations and fewer volunteers coming forward to take on some roles.
These are just my thoughts, my challenge to you is to ask yourself is it time to have a serious discussion on achieving a sustainable programme of events to take our branch into the future. Greg Terrill
