Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Another month has rolled around since I contemplated what to write . There have been several very supported events including Theo’s Shed Raid which saw many people take part and enjoy this event. Another was the working Bee at the Club rooms . A big thank you to those people who turned up to tackle Hugh’s List and get our Club Rooms looking sharp for another 12 months. It is nice to have a tidy up before the Double 50. I see recently that NZ Post has announced a price increase for postage effective from July . If people would give careful consideration to receiving there Venture by Email (in full colour I might add). If you would like to get it on a trial basis on Email give me a yell. I am proposing at the AGM a motion that those who receive their Venture electronically get a reduction in their Subs. Talking of AGM’s please get your nomination Forms into Jan as soon as possible for anyone interested in giving a little to help our club by way of their time. C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMAN ANNUAL REPORT 2017: Another year has gone by so fast; it certainly doesn’t seem like 12 months since I was elected Chairman at the 2016 AGM. Firstly I would like to thank Graeme Luxford, who as Vice Chairman took over the role of Branch Chairman while Marcia and I were in the UK on holiday for 2 months. It was great knowing that the Branch was in good hands. During the past year your committee have been working very hard to keep the Waikato Branch at the fore front of the Vintage Car Club of N.Z. We have had a very full and varied program of events. Our program for the year must be varied to suit our varied membership. Different people like different events, Competitive Rallies, Shed Raids, Weekend Tours, Picnics, and visits to places of interest. We can’t please all of the members all of the time but we try hard to please most of the members most of the time. The membership of the Branch has been growing steadily. Over the past year there has been 46 new member applications, this has been mainly due to the hard work of our membership Secretary, Ian Patton. We currently have 440 members making us the third largest Branch of the VCC of NZ. We need to keep this effort up as during the year we lose members due to a variety of reasons. It is the responsibility of all members to help “RECRUIT” new members. Then it is just as important to “RETAIN” our members. Make them feel welcome and encourage them to join in our program of events. The Branch is in a very healthy financial position. Our club rooms are in good condition with the only long term expense being a re-roof in years to come. During the year our Branch was fortunate to combine with the Auckland Branch putting together a committee, under the Directorship of Bob Hayton, to hold the 25th National Motorcycle Rally at Waitomo. This committee reported directly to the Management Committee. Our Branch members were in charge of Marshalling on the Saturday, being the rally day. The Rally was put on at very short notice, but was a roaring success. My thanks to the committee for the hard work they carried out over the past year, and the support that they have shown me also. Some are seeking re-election and to those I say Good Luck and Best Wishes for the coming year. For those who are not seeking re-election, thanks for your support and hard work over the past year. My thanks also go to all the Branch members who have supported the various activities over the past year. It is always good for event organisers to have lots of support, so thanks for coming out and joining in. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be your Chairman again. As I am not seeking re-election I would encourage all members to fully support your new Chairman and Committee. THANK YOU again for your support. GRAHAM PATE. 4

Secretary’s Report Winter is rolling in now with cooler temperatures and more rain, and it is also signaled by fewer other branch events. Entry forms available – Wellsford/Warkworth Winter Woollies Wander 1-2nd July, entries close 23 June. Their members are generously offering accommodation, first in first served, so get in on that offer. VIC Renewals. These come up every 10 years, but you don’t have to worry, Christchurch HQ will send a reminder and a form when the time comes up for yours. PLEASE return the form to me for signing, and then it will be sent on to Christchurch. Membership Records Could you please ensure that we are informed of any changes that are made to your address, telephone number, or email address. Also, Christchurch attempt to keep a record of vehicles and their owners. Have you had a change in vehicle ownership since you joined the club?? MAY’S CLUB RUN (SHED RAID) A friendly phone call from good mates Heather & Graham Boswell (the Bozzies) suggesting we join them on the clubs May run got us off our backsides, which gave us an alternative to spending every day in the dam garden. A 40 mile cruise through the country side starting at Dave Nordell’s restoration workshop in Kihi Kihi filled the paddock for parking to over flowing as more and more members arrived. It’s not very often you find three or four Bugatti’s (value in the millions) at the end of a metal driveway in the Waikato all of which were closely guarded by the beautifully presented De Leeuw Packard. Dave gave us a briefing of the vehicles on display and then it was on to the next shed at Te Kowhai. The route travelled through Pirongia, Whatawhata, to Te Kowhai where everyone took advantage of Barbara & Brian Bakers wonderful garden setting with beautifully mowed lawns for lunch. Their display of Riley vehicles sure enhanced the picnic atmosphere; some were even able to purchase jars of home grown passion fruit pulp. A great time to have a catch up with members new and old (membership that is not Age). We then headed off after a good halfway lunch break to Te Rapa (Hamilton) where Paul Perry (Body Mods) showed us a number of 6
Cars under restoration. We were allowed to wander through his workshop after a short warning re Health & Safety due to the number of sharp metal pointy bits everywhere. Next door to Pauls workshop shop was a collection of approx. 22 vehicles and motor bikes almost hidden under storage dust. These vehicles were owned by Allen Sharp and Tom Andrews, which gave a number of members the opportunity to reminisce and dribble about the times they had or drove one. On to the last point of call (Frankton) for a cuppa and scones (Jam & cream, They went pretty bloody quick) to view Reese & Sue Burnett’s collection of very desirable veteran cars, collectables and Sue’s collection of Period Costumes as well as an assortment of antiquey stuff. The number of vehicles to turn up for the run (36 I think) reminded Val and me of the good old days especially the collection of older members in attendance. I know the ones with walking sticks won’t mind being referred to as part of a collection (Ha-ha). The rally route made for a pleasant journey with good simple clear instructions so well done Theo de Leeuw and your helpers and thanks to those who opened their sheds for our benefit. But special thanks to the Bozzies for getting us off our Butts. The only regret on the day for me was I didn’t get around meeting the newer members or should I say those who I hadn’t met before. POLICY FOR CALENDAR EVENTS AND ELIGIBLE VEHICLES Mooloo Meander No change proposed. A very successful event catering for the M/C enthusiasts. 50/50 Rally No change proposed. This event caters for all club eligible vehicles. Post Vintage Rally No change proposed. This event caters for four classes of club vehicles. Vintage Venture Change proposed. Veteran Rally Change proposed
VETERAN RALLY Currently allows Veteran and RWB Vintage vehicles to enter. Proposed Change Allow all Vintage vehicles to enter, but only Veteran vehicles be eligible to win the event. The rally to be plotted to suit Veterans, especially 1 & 2 cylinders. Vintage vehicles could compete but not eligible to win, but could have a minor prize for best Vintage. Rational: This would give Vintage owners another opportunity to drive their vehicles. It would potentially increase rally numbers to make the event more viable.
VINTAGE VENTURE RALLY Currently allows Vintage vehicles only. Proposed Change Allow suitable Veteran and Post Vintage vehicles to enter the event, but only Vintage vehicles be eligible to win. The rally to be plotted to suit Vintage vehicles. The Veteran and Post Vintage vehicles could compete but not be eligible to win, but could have a minor prize for best Veteran and best Post Vintage. Rational: This would give Veteran and Post Vintage owners another opportunity to drive their vehicles. It would potentially increase rally numbers to make the event more viable. These changes to two of the WVVVC calendar events should encourage more use of Veteran and Vintage vehicles, which has been the aim of the branch for some time.

Motorcycle We are now nearly half way through the year and with the Mooloo now behind us and with Bob the next years plotter away on holiday for 6 months, lucky people, he was keen to have some idea what we can do for next year’s 25 year Celebration before he went. So we have been looking at venues for the Saturday night that would be something special and we have found a venue that we think will fit the bill admirably, more on where when things have been firmed up. We have decided that the rally will start from the club rooms as usual and Bob will plot the rally when he gets back. With 6 months of the year to go there are a number of event that you need to have marked off in your diary. There is the Motor Bike show in Auckland on the 16/17 Sept, a group of us went last year so we are keen to do the same again. We have our South Waikato County run in the middle of Oct which is a must to attend as we are hoping to see the plane that we saw last year up and running, more on which week end in the next Venture. I know some of you were talking about entering the double fifty on you bikes, but I think we should look to have a ride to a place of interest in July or Aug, should anyone know someone or place st to visit, please give me a ring. Easter Rally 2018. A couple of years ago when I was Branch Chairman, I had a rush of blood and volunteered the Waikato Branch to host the 2018 North Island Easter Rally. A following discussion went something along the lines of “well you got us into this, you better front up and make it work”. Actually, I’m more than happy to lead an enthusiastic team for this event. Planning is underway. A rally committee has been formed and comprises of myself and Gaynor, Jan and Gordon Dearlove, Hugh and Bronya McInally, Jenny and Ian Patton, Brent Terrill and Arlene Jeffery and Graeme and Marcia Pate. 0ver the coming months I will continue to provide updates with progress as we go. The committee has decided to try some new ideas to encourage all to attend. As an example we are looking at providing a bus option for our older members who would prefer not to be driving but by taking the bus, they can travel one of the rally routes, meet up with the entrants at lunch as well as take part in the social events. We are also looking for interested people to billet out of towners, and we will provide a list of what is available so those wanting to be billeted can chose whom they may like to stay with. There will be more about this in the near future. This month’s two items of interest: the theme will be County and Western theme there will be an optional twilight run on Good Friday Look out for more Easter Rally info next month. Greg Terrill

Twilight Rally Sat—30th April off to the Club Twilight rally tonight. The weather looks lousy—wet as—the wipers not all that flash on the brown car, so I guess we had better get the yellow car out—Fitted new battery and filled with gas . We need to do a little shopping and deliver some stuff to our son’s place, so took off early. Had lunch with Kevin and family, then off to Harvey Norman for that bit of shopping. Back to Mitre 10 car park. Had a coffee, then ready to start—still raining. About 12 cars eventually turned up for the 4 pm start. Briefing—No Exit Roads do not exist. Instructions start at Give Way The yellow car was 3rd away—followed 1 minute later by the red car Left a not exit on the left. Right at T. all O.K. A few more turns and the yellow car was confronted by a sign which said “no access to the north”. Well is that a no exit, probably not, so carry on—It was exactly as it said and headed us south—all O.K. About now the red car caught up. Shortly the cell phone rang—awful hard to answer when driving, but the navigator came to the rescue. It was the red car—”I built this road”. See the big building on the right., I built that also— Do you want to invest in a room (It is the retirement village). Shortly the red car passed the yellow car at quite a speed. So we follow along. Ducked around the Horotiu Saw a backyard with lots of old Morris Minors stacked in it. Then it was right after school—well there is the school, where is our right. About 10 kms later we found it. Toured around the edges of Hamilton keeping the red car in view. At Tauwhare we had to find Ringers Road on the left. The yellow car decided here was an opportunity to pass the red car unnoticed, shot up Victoria Road. The yellow car pulled into final check just ahead of the red car, but the results were the other way around. The red car was the winner. Good Run and good meal at the Raceway, though prices have gone up considerably. Thanks to Brian and Gwen for putting the Run together, and also their Helpers. Cheers The Yellow Car Crew

Danny & Vicki Ryan’s 1922 Hispano Suiza unveiling .
Danny Ryan is very well known to Waikato Members of the VCC. At a recent Club meeting he encouraged us to attend a very special unveiling of a rare car. It's a passionate restoration project that's been more than seven years in the making. More than 300 people gathered at the Classics Museum in Hamilton on Wednesday evening to watch the unveiling of the newest attraction on four wheels. For husband and wife owners Vicky and Danny Ryan it's been more than seven years, restoring this 1922 HispanoSuiza Model H6B Today was the first time Mrs Ryan got to see it in finished form. She says it was overwhelming to see it all complete. "It's
quite emotional actually to see it all. It's been a long time coming. It's lovely to see the car finished and a car of this 14
magnitude, of this calibre. It's lovely to have it out there for everybody to see." The Hispano-Suiza was discovered in an old barn in the United States - then it was shipped to New Zealand for restoration. That's when the Ryans found out about it. Danny Ryan says the story of their car began when it came here to be restored for a European client who eventually gave up on the project. "The restoration started the restoration stopped, and the vehicle become for sale. Vicki and I bought it and after all these years we're here tonight to celebrate the completion of the restoration and to show it to the people that are interested in this hobby."
Mrs Ryan shares the passion - saying she loves the mystique of vintage cars. "Was it a family that owned it or, who was built for? How was it used? What was it used for? That we don't know, and it's that history that I like, the fact that there is history there." 15

It isn't the couple's first project - but it has been their biggest to date. "This is perhaps the most unique vehicle we have restored and it really is something to see and so that's what also drives me along to complete the project." Mr Ryan says. An engineer by trade - Mr Ryan says he loves the skill required to restore a car. "It's an engineering challenge, this particular mark is incredibly engineered by a French company and it's quite exclusive and beautifully built from an engineering perspective so that's what attracts me to it." Classics Museum Owner Tom Andrews says it's an honour to have the vintage vehicle unveiled at his museum. "The interest level (from people) that like to look at the stuff is phenomenal." "My hope is that this car stays in New Zealand because it's obviously super valuable", and often "unfortunately a lot of the most valuable cars", end up being sold to the "wealthy people from overseas." "It would be great for it to become part of New Zealand's history." The Hispano-Suiza will be on display at the Classics Museum for about a month before heading to it's new home in Nelson - where the Ryans have recently moved. This car is a tribute to the local Trades people of the Waikato . To be able to build and refurbish this car to such an extremely high level is testament to their skills. Well done Danny and Vicki, I hope you enjoy the motoring experience. 17
A very big thanks to all the members that pitched in on the Working Bee. I will be so bold as to say that all the members will most certainly appreciate what you all achieved. We had 20 plus arrive around 10am and were straight into the working list that had been prepared. There was the men’s toilet entrance to be painted. Front gate and fence painted. All the poles painted along the veranda painted and the list went on and on. Lunch was dished out at about 1pm and no sooner had the food been consumed and everyone was back into it. North Island Easter Rally 2017. When the Ancient Mariner said Water water everywhere , nor any drop to drink, he could have been describing our home after Debbie and Cook had deluged us. Although the driveway was a challenge to negotiate with much of front was under water and some of the garden out in the lane, we realised we couldn’t do anything about it, and decided to still go to the Easter Rally as planned, which was hosted by Auckland Branch. Diane and Geoff Quarrie had trailered their Studebaker up on Thursday and after due consideration we all waited until after lunch on Good Friday to leave for Auckland, assuming that the worst of the traffic would have abated. Good plan as going north was relatively easy, just relieved we weren’t going south as we passed a line of stationery vehicles stretching about 15km. Diane and Geoff were driving the Studebaker and Greg and I the Daimler and it was still raining as we left. We arrived at our accommodation and went to the Auckland Clubrooms to pick up rally packs and have a dinner of pizza, salad, and apple shortchake. It was also a good time to catch up with friends from around the North Island. There were 61 entrants ranging from Wellsford/Warkworth, North Shore, Waitemata, Auckland, Waikato ( 6) , Eastern Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Central Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Manawatu, Wellington and Canterbury (3). Saturday was the rally day, with the start in Drury in South Auckland. This meant we had to leave the motel just after 8am as we were heading down the Southern Motorway to arrive at the rally briefing before 9:00am. The first car was away at 9:30am with written instructions and timing from the start. The majority of the field went off course at the first instruction although the instructions were such that we didn’t know. Morning tea of hot cross buns was at a Ararimu Hall where numbers of silent checks found were discussed, ( think I had my blinkers on as clearly I had missed some), and we resumed again, travelling towards Maramarua, Miranda, and Kaiaua to arrive at Waharau Regional Park for lunch. We also completed some fun gymkana events on the way as the field they were to be in on Sunday was too wet. The afternoon run guided us to the Hunuas with some instructions making us stop and ponder, for example, turn right. We decided the road named was actually an acute right and carried on down a no exit road for some distance where we found a manned check, we expressed concern as we were given a piece of paper telling us to u-turn and ignore the instruction we were on, take the next left and continue with next instruction. We decided we had blown it there and then. The last instruction also required us to turn left, again we decided it was an acute and carried on to find a turn left where once more we found a manned check with more pieces of paper requiring us to u-turn etc etc. I was concened that I had not found as many silent checks as I thought I should – the results showed that indeed I had missed two in the morning and four in the afternoon. Afternoon tea was back at Drury School where we had started and we set off back along the motorway into Auckland to get ready to go to the clubrooms for dinner. An enjoyable meal was had and an early night was called for as the rally had been over 120 miles and speeds of just over 31mph. At the dinner Colin Bell, the rally plotter, revealed that he and Pam ( his wife) had plotted the rally three times due to the dual cyclones of Debbie and Cook, and were still replotting as late of Wednesday of Easter week. Sunday morning allowed a bit of a lie in as we did not have to be at the clubrooms until 9:30 for a 10am start. As we motored to South Auckland again, we did not know what a treat was in store for us. We arrived to see a superb assemblage of Rolls Royce vehicles ranging from the early twenties to present day. There were also Lagondas and Bristols on display. The everyday cars were a sight to behold as well, a collection of Bentleys, one of which was just three weeks old. Back up the motorway again to get ready for prizegiving dinner in Remuera where we had a delicious meal and there was really good music to sing along to and dance. Both the Haytons and the Fusseys featured in the prize giving and the Waikato team of Paul and Carol Fussey, Kelvin and Christine Davis and Bob and Jillian Hayton were a credible second in the team’s trophy. The overall winner was Gavin Welch from Auckland driving a Ford Y. Huge thanks must go the organising committee of Tracey and Stephen Winterbottom, Colin and Pam Bell, Russel and Jocelyn McApline, Glenn and Marion Morris, Bob and Debbie Ballantyne, and Ken and Annette Foot. They must be commended for their work and the great rally they delivered. It was disappointing that there were only 61 entries after all of the effort that goes into organising such an event.
