Chairman’s Report Hi everyone, Chris and I attended the National VCC AGM in Greymouth last month it went very well. Chris will give a brief report on proceedings. I guess the best part of the event was meeting old friends and spending four hours each way talking to and getting to know Chris a little better. Talking about our branch and what we can do to improve things in some areas. The branch can again be extremely proud of the result from our Daffodil Fundraising with a cheque being presented to our local Cancer Society for $17,500. Thank you to all who helped make this a very successful event for the society, they were blown away by the result. We will do this again next year with hopefully the same result or better. We can’t stop now we’re getting momentum and on a roll. I must also thank the other societies on the park for their efforts in helping towards the success. I can’t let this go pass without saying thanks to Shirley (and her sewing machine) for the raffle she took charge of. We again had the BBQ out for the annual PGG sale, we didn’t do quite so well this year as it was raining and that kept people away, but it wasn’t a waste of time as we managed to bank about $700. Thanks to those who braved the wet and cold for your help. Very shortly Bill is going to have 4 or 5 Chevies on display in the museum and hopefully we can have other displays of different makes etc in the future.

Club Captain’s Report August saw a few club events come and go in the most part a successful club month. The annual mud plug was held on the 18th on the Sorenson’s farm near Kaituna, we would like to thank them for the use of their land and to Barry and his team for scoring and setup also to David Stuart for the use of his Argo ATV which was a great help for the recoveries which are inevitable in this type of event. Overall winner: Richard Topliss in a Ford 10 st 1 long wheelbase category : Josh Thwaites in the cockroach (ahead of his dear old Dad) Ladies winner: Linda Topliss in a Ford 10 Best Dressed: Chris de Wagt 4
Hard Luck Award: Goes to John Fowler from Greymouth who was noted for his off-road ballet. A graceful, though well executed 360-degree pirouette on a steep downhill slope. The local entry, Mrs. Ferguson was noted for being a bit overweight as the other competitors found her too hard to push though, she made up for it as her fence removal abilities proved exceptionally good. I heard that the waratahs were fixed with not too much of a problem. Dion Schwass in the Wotsit deserves a mention in dispatches in that his enthusiasm exceeded the structural limit of the Wotsits axle. A successful day with sixteen competitors with numbers down slightly but offset by being able to have more runs and it worked well. Daffodil day on Sunday 25th August dawned cold and with a lazy west wind out of the sun but as promised the temperature improved and we had a very good day when the sun arrived. We had a good turn out of 250 cars and 20 bikes and the foot traffic seemed on a par with last year. A cheque was presented to the cancer society last Wednesday at our weekly smoko morning to the value of $17,500.00 which exceeded the combined donations of Canterbury, Auckland and Nelson a figure we can all be proud of. A special thanks to Bob and Kelly who carried the brunt of the fundraising. We had an outing on Father’s Day which saw a reasonable turn out with a pub lunch at the Cork and Keg. UPCOMING SEPTEMBER: I received a request from Seddon hall committee member asking if we could have a presence of old vehicles at the opening of the postearthquake rebuilt hall on the 15th September from 1100 to 1500hrs. Veterans would be real good. Could anyone who could help please call me. Suggested departure time 0930hrs from our clubrooms. There is a club run to Bernie Millers place in Mahau Sound organized for the 29th September. We aim to leave the clubrooms at 10am and it should take about an hour and a half to two hours to drive and have a picnic lunch when we get there, please bring your own lunch and thermos chair etc. OCTOBER : Seddon Station - 6th October. The steam train is going to Seddon on the 6th October and we have a request for a presence of old vehicles. 1230hrs at the station Combined run to Linkwater to the Queen Charlotte Tavern with the motor cycle section on the 20th October. Presidents run to north Canterbury leaves here on the 29th October and returns 2nd November. More details in next newsletter, meanwhile put your name on the list if you are interested in either or both trips. Secretary’s Scribblings Kelly and I have attended the National AGM and National Executive meetings, in Greymouth. The underlining theme of the weekend was “youth” as nearly every presentation starting with our Foundation Member Andrew Anderson was on how can we encourage the youth to not only join our club but also take an active part - do we hold events that they will want to participate in. By youth we are not just talking of the junior membership which is under 21 - one interesting statistic that came out of the weekend is that 34% of the national membership is under 65 so we need to encourage more members in this age group as they will be leading the club in years to come. During the weekend we had a presentation on online registration, re-branding and an update on the strategic plan. See the separate report on the meetings. As a branch we cater very well for those in the over 66 age group however we would be interested in hearing from members in the younger age group and young at heart on ideas on what we can offer you. The Daffodil Day Vehicle Display for Cancer was very well attended and was a very successful day once again with over 250 cars, 20 bikes along with Clinker boats and stationery Engines displayed, as well as the Vintage and Farm Machinery Society, Wood Workers Guild, Miniature Railway, Riverside Railway and the Modelers Group all participating in the day. Thanks goes to all those involved in the day, and to the many Marlborough businesses who donated funds to make the day the success it was. A cheque was presented by Bob O’Malley to Felicity Spenser from the Marlborough Cancer Society for $17,500. From our Monthly meeting: Linda Laing is offering to run training sessions on how to use the defibrillator which is in the Clubrooms. As this training needs to be in small groups, next Wednesday the Committee will be shown how this operates and from there others in the Branch will be encouraged to take a little time to learn how this important piece of equipment operates. Club Captain, Jim Mclean has a number of runs and events happening over the next few months so please make sure you are aware of these. The Brayshaw Heritage Park Association has Armourguard checking the area frequently for sighs of vandalism and breaches of Security. The administrators have suggested that each Society needs to install Security Cameras so that an eye can be kept on anyone in the area, especially during the hours of darkness. Plans are being considered for small carport type sheds to securely house the BBQ and Motorcycle Trailers. We are able to build these up to 20 Sq.m 6
without a consent so our builders are being asked to come up with ideas for these. The Pegasus sign from the roof has been painted and finished off and looks great. We are waiting to have this lifted back on to the roof. Please be very careful when negotiating the steps from Patchetts Green into the Clubrooms and they have become quite slippery, and as members are getting older there has been an odd occasion of a fall here. Please hold the side rails when going up or down. We will be looking at doing something to make these safer in the near future. There has been an offer from Alan and Francie Paul of the donation of their 1939 Morris 8 Series E car to the Branch. This has been accepted by the committee and hopefully within a week or two we will see this car in the Museum. th Advanced warning of an event coming up on 17 November at the Alfred Street Carpark of an Automotive Swapmeet to raise funds for St John Ambulance. This is not a VCC event but would be worthwhile for our members to support this. Due to the unavailability of helpers, the proposed Shiny Parts Auction on 29th September has been cancelled. A suggestion was made that members could look at picking up some of our older and infirm members to bring them along to our Wednesday morning Smokos’. If any member wants to help, or be collected from their place of residence, please let us know. As some of you who have had phone calls from me over the past month or so will know, I have been updating email address and in some cases phone numbers of members which have been out of date. We now have about 25 members who are not on email, from a total of around 330 members. These emails will be used at times to convey information to you. By now you would have received your Subscription renewal from National Office. When you pay this please make sure you include your membership number with your payment, especially if you pay by internet banking. As noted on the tear off part of the form at the bottom, please advise any address / vehicle / membership changes. If you have had a change of email or phone number, please let the National office know when you renew your sub. There are a number of members who are on a restricted list, where your details are hidden from other members. If you don’t want to be on this list, please let the Office know so they can put you on the open list. August AGM & Nat. Exec Meeting Report - August 2019 AGM and National Exec Meeting National Exec Meeting: Matters arising from the March meeting - the notice of motion that was put forward last year for ratification may soon be finalised as under the main club constitution clauses 15.10 and 6.5 the executive are able to delegate authority when required. As well as a notice of motion there was also a change from the Manawatu branch that required ratifying, so the executive have delegated the authority for this to the Honorary Secretary/Treasurer. Beaded Wheels - instead of transferring these onto a CD these are now being posted onto a link via their web page and will be available to be downloaded. Budget for 2019/2020 - no increase in National Subscriptions. Changes to the Bylaws - the private remit put forward by Rod Brayshaw and Tony Bartlett was approved after a lengthy discussion - 33 for and 5 against. Our remit regarding presenting 50-year badges was not put as the current bylaw allows the National President to delegate this out to the branch chairmen, patrons etc which has happened in the past as the occasion warrants. Bay of Plenty branch put forward a request to include the word Classic in their name. This request was voted on by delegates and declined. The main reason being that we are all branches of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand and should be stylised as such. There are a couple of exceptions however those branches were clubs set up prior to joining the VCC and so were given permission to keep their original name. Rallies - the inaugural National Vintage Rally is being held in the Hawkes Bay region on September 2020 and being hosted by the Central Hawkes Bay and Hawkes Bay branches. It will be a 3 day event possibly limited to 75 entrants. Another new event being held next year is the Highland Fling which is being held on ANZAC weekend around the Taihape region. This event is being held in the North Island and is modelled on the Irishman Creek rally. Like the Irishman it tailors for Veteran and Vintage vehicles however unlike the Irishman - will be held on a different date each year as the premise is for a different branch to organise the event each year so the date will be one that suits them. Online Registration. For a couple of years the management committee have been looking at implementing online registrations to make it easier for new members to join and had asked Murray Trounson from Canterbury Branch to look into this further. One of Murray’s son’s works in IT and had drafted up a possible online form for us to look at. Murray’s son is in his mid 30’s so the 8
application process was drafted with what this age group are looking for - something that is quick and easy to use. The proposal is that the standard form would be sent to National Office who would then forward to a branch for approval. The proposal also included the prospective member paying the membership fee up front so there is still some work on what this would look like. It is planned that the final draft will be available for the March Executive meeting and then signed off at next years AGM. The paper registration form will be modified at the same time so both options are user friendly. Draft Constitution - as previously mentioned it is not compulsory for branches to adopt this however as there were no other changes to be made it is now available to be used on request to National Office.
AGM report: The AGM was opened by Mayor Tony Kokshoorn and then followed by an address by founding member Andrew Anderson. Andrew’s address set the underlining theme for the AGM which was plugging into youth for the future for the club. Give them the events that they want - i.e: the Targa Rally. encouraging youth to join and organising events that they want to participate. As Andrew said, “Our people like what we have as other challenges aren’t there for them”. Matters arising from the previous AGM: There was an article sent to branches advising how to join the club Facebook page - search Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. Work is being done on updating the club brochures. WOF issues - branches are still encouraged to produce a list of local garages/WOF testing stations that can assist members to find one that is sympathetic to our vehicles. Beaded Wheels - can be purchased online and can also be sent electronically to members. Reports: The presidents report was included with the notice of meeting and there was no discussion on this. I will arrange for the others to be emailed out to branch members. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. During the report session we had a presentation from Roger White Chairman of the Vehicle Technical Committee on what they do. The members on this committee are have extensive experience in the Motor industry. With VIC applications they would like us to make sure that all information is supplied - the more information is better and recommended taking good quality photos of old registration and warrant stickers, engine and chassis numbers etc as these all help with dating the vehicle. Roger gave a couple of examples of vehicles which 9
have been double dated which in the case of one meant that until the owner can produce more information is classified as a Vintage instead of a Veteran. He also recommended that when restoring a vehicle to find materials that are as close to the original as possible. Election of Officers: The successful candidates for the 3 Management Committee positions were Tony Bartlett, Ed Boyd and George R Kear. Of the 8673 members, 1805 voted which equates to 19% of members who voted. Marlborough had the 11th highest percentage of members per branch with 22% of branch members voting, being 72 out of 331 members. Due to work commitments Tony Haycock has stood down as the Rally Director for the 2021 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring and has been replaced by Greg Terrill. Tony is still very committed to the festival and will remain committee as the National Management Committee Liaison member. John L Goddard Trophy was presented to Murray Thoms from Tauranga. Murray and his wife spent a month travelling around the South Island at the end of last year in their Veteran car. Updating VCC Image - President Diane Quarrie gave a presentation on a proposal to update our image which includes a possible tag line of “Driving Our History” and possible change of the logo which can incorporate the tag line. The presentation has been forwarded to branches so if you would like a copy please let me know. The members present were very positive towards updating our image to make it more relevant. Strategic Plan: Gaynor Terrill gave an update on the strategic plan that was implemented at the 2015 AGM. She went through ways of increasing public awareness which included branch visibility - visits to retirement homes/schools etc; using the Youth Subsidy Grant; Advertising in other car magazines and the Facebook page. Her recommendations for improving club visibility include: • Continue liking the Facebook page. Contributions for the Facebook page can be sent to comms@vcc.org.nz. These can include photos with a brief 3-4 line comment. • Increase the functionality of the VCC website. • National Day to become a priority. • Upload branch magazines to the website on a regular basis. Things to consider: • How is our branch friendly and welcoming? • Do we have a designated person to look after new members? • Are our premises clean and tidy? • Do the clubrooms interior fit with a younger generation or is it more like a museum? 10

Are they bright and fresh looking? Are the photos current? Does the library and parts shed cater for more modern vehicles? Would our guest speakers be of interest to the age of people we are trying to attract?
Recommendations: • Branches should have a delegated person(s) to look after new members • Consider what we do as a branch and its perception to others • Guest speakers may need to reflect the age of the audience • Complete the development of the online membership application • Seek consensus from AGM to investigate and develop possible re-branding • scenarios
A couple of lighter moments…. Sent in by Chris Bird Fred owned a bar in rural New Zealand and a customer came in and asked, “What is the Wi-Fi password please?” to which he replied, “You have to buy a drink first.” The customer ordered and paid for a beer, then asked again, “What is the Wi-Fi password please?” to which Fred replied,” You have to buy a drink first, that’s no spaces and all lower case.”

Update from Your Kitchen Custodian Hi Folks Another month has passed with not a lot happening until Daffodil Day. Which was again another successful day, I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everybody that donated baking and also a BIG thank you to everybody that gave their time to help in the Kitchen, with out your help we would not be able to have these functions. Our natter and noggin was a pot luck dinner with some trophy's presented to motor cycle members and Linda showed some slides of the National Motor cycle rally. Very interesting. On Thursday 5th we supplied a BBQ for the PGG Wrightson's sale, weather wasn't very kind. Wet and cold so only the hardy ones braved it. Again THANK YOU to everyone that has helped during the month.

VCC of NZ MARLBOROUGH BRANCH LIFE MEMBER CITATION David and Judith Bruce David is one of the few Marlborough Branch members who have achieve fifty years of continuous membership. Over the years he has been an active, loyal and respected member. With the exception of a very original well-worn Model A truck his vehicles of choice have been mainly Rovers’ and Riley's’ ranging from a 1905 Rover to other vehicles up through the VCC Classes. His most notable restoration was the 1905 Rover which he started with only the basic remnants and over a lengthy period he gathered the missing parts. In 1980 David and Judith motored the little 8hp open car from Ward to Rotorua, competed in an international rally and motored back to Ward a journey of approximately 300 miles. Such a journey made in the inclement weather of May at an average speed of 15mph often meant cold and wet 12 hour days were necessary. David and Judith are worthy of an award for undertaking such a journey without even taking into account the management contributions they have made. David served on the branch committee as far back as 1965 and again in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He was branch delegate to the National Executive for 4 years in the mid 1980’s and was Club Captain from 2006—2012 inclusive. As well as supporting and assisting David in this commitments Judith has contributed in her own right, serving on the committee for 5 years and several years as delegate to the Brayshaw Park Committee and made a significant contribution to the branch during her time as kitchen and social activities manager.

Peter and Margaret Holdaway Peter and Margaret joined the branch in the early days, Peter was Club Captain in 1990 and a branch committee member 1991– 1992 before holding the Club Captain position again in 1993 through to and including 1995. He then returned to the branch committee in 2003. He has served as a delegate to the National Executive and the Brayshaw Park Users Committee. His dedication to Brayshaw Parks ongoing progress and efficient governance has resulted in him being accorded the honour of Patron of the Park Society. Peter has also served as our senior museum custodian. Margaret was a branch committee member in 1995 and 1996 and was chairperson in 1997 and 1998, the first woman to hold the branch chairperson position. She served on the committee again in 1999 to 2004. Both Peter & Margaret have been regular attendees on local outings, rallies and local events and have willingly helped in the organising and running of branch events. In the past they have [participated in other branch, national and international rallies. Their vehicles over the years have ranged from veteran, vintage and up through the later classes and in all case they have been very well presented.

Graham and Carroll Wiblin It is difficult to assess whether Graham supports Carroll or vice versa over many years as both have been active in all the branch activities. Graham has been one of the most active restorers in our branch history not only for his efforts with the Wiblin Whippet, Renault and Shact but he has an immense part in assisting fellow members to keep and put their restorations on the road. His expertise has also been made available to a number of VCC members in other branches. In all cases his restorations have been of a very high standard. Graham served on at least two occasions on the branch committee and done a term as Club Captain. He was branch delegate to Brayshaw Park Committee and served for a period as secretary f that organisation. He out in many hours lawn mowing and doing other work within our park area. Carroll was one of the three ladies who set up the ladies committee in 1976 which took over responsibility for the kitchen, social activities and some of the fundraising for the building. In 1979 she became a branch committee member possibly the first woman to do so. She was assistant to the Club Captain at that time progressing to Club Captain in the following year. She was active in the late 1990’s and 2000’s serving three separate terms in the chair and one as treasurer. Carroll also played an active part in the management of Brayshaw Park as our delegate and as chairperson of the Park committee. Carroll has been the newsletter editor, kitchen and social convener and is currently the beaded wheels reported. Graham and Carroll have both been active in organising branch rallies, swap meets and other activities.

Letter to the Editor... I was visiting a friend this week who has just moved to a new a hamlet. The reason, other than lunch at nearby restaurant , was the ‘secret treasure ‘ that I’d perhaps appreciate ? Opposite the renovated ancient cottage was a barn, roof falling in and broken windows BUT a garage door that was not locked. Inside we’re an old cart, a Simca and 2 Renault’s. Not exactly the treasures from Jaguar, Bugatti or Ferrari I was dreaming of!! Still, it was enough of a surprise and the realisation that perhaps the best ‘rusting in peace’ vehicles would be in a barn closer to a Chateau, NOT in the countryside!! There MUST be others!! I’ve also included a ‘selfie’ with my favourite ‘Boulangerie’ owners. He makes the best Paris/ Brest (the 2 circular halves represent the cycle wheels of that race) patisseries in France!! I’m fairly confident of that as have tried quite a few over the years!! She always remembers my choice of pastry, even when I return from NZ! Cheers.....Lyndall 21

It has interesting stories, posts on events and photos of vintage and classic vehicle activities from around New Zealand and the world. One of the photo posts on the last Irishman Rally achieved a reach of 8,253 people. For those who already have a facebook account: Go to the VCC facebook page and LIKE it. Posts will then appear in YOUR facebook stream and you can share them with your friends. For those who don’t have a facebook page or don’t want to set up an account: type in the link below and then save it in bookmarks in your internet browser. You will then have easy access to the page whenever you want to see the latest posts. HIGHLAND FLING - A FEW MORE DETAILS: DATE : 24 - 26 April 2020 The date for the Highland Fling was altered several times by the organizing committee before settling on late Autumn next year. Originally the 'Fling' was planned for Queen's Birthday, however, the date was changed for different reasons. REASONS a) Wanganui Branch has their annual Rally at Queen's Birthday b) The country roads and private farms we plan to travel on in June could be heavily bogged in, and therefore, more time would be spent towing vehicles out of the mud than actual motoring c) To date, this event has already gained national momentum with many South Island members indicating they are keen to attend the Highland Fling as well as the Irishman Creek Rally, therefore it would not be possible for them to participate in both events if the 'Fling' was held at Queens Birthday. LOCATION The chosen location for the first event will be the highlands of Taihape / Upper Rangitikei area. We selected this region of the North Island because Alastair Jones (BOP Member) who is spearheading this Rally, has a great deal of knowledge and experience 'under his belt' traveling off-road in and around Taihape/Waiurou from his many years as a Major serving in the NZ Army. RULES OF ENTRY Veteran and Vintage vehicles HOST BRANCH The Bay of Plenty Branch will host the inaugural 'Highland Frolic,' and I am optimistic with the right publicity and marketing, another branch in the North Island will volunteer to host the Frolic in 2021. Therefore, 1) the 'Highland Fling WILL NOT necessarily be held every year in the Taihape region in April, and 2) be hosted by the BOP branch. I am cognizant Taranaki Branch does have their popular 'Maunga Moana Rally' at the end of April, but I believe there is room for both events as they each have appeal to different audiences, and in my opinion, importantly it's healthy to give members a variation on a theme, with dissimilar challenges. SUMMARY: Entry Forms will be sent to you in November This is a three-day event The Runs for this event trust me, will be uncomplicated and a whole lot of fun! PLEASE NOTE: I will be out of the country from 20 August until 27 September, however, while I am away I will endeavour to clear my emails at least twice a week. MOTORCYCLE REPORT The annual cold nose and toes ride to Wairau Valley was exactly that with snow on the tops from Mt Riley to Patriarch. However, the sun was shining and our host at the tavern who had been told to expect ten to fifteen for lunch was overheard to say “hell there is more of you than I expected” when twenty-five lined up to order meals. Admittedly four of us travelled in cars and another five who arrived just behind us belonged to another motorcycle club. Our twenty included Mike P. out with us for the first time. Welcome Mike. Good to see Paul out running in the vintage ace, a lot of us would keep it wrapped in cotton wool. The new back up trailer met with approval but happily was not needed. Daffodil Day saw another good turnout of our motorcycle section members along with the equally good turn out of members cars. As was the case with the car display, we had several non-members join us with some interesting machines. Several of our members displayed bikes we do not see regularly. Danny’s Kawasaki, Ryan’s somewhat rare CB twin 125 Honda K, Phil’s ex South African military Mercury Triumph, Ben’s unrestored A.M.F Harley and Elizabeth displayed a 1970’s bicycle. Most attention focussed on Barry N’s latest purchase, a rare and immaculately restored 1932 250cc Triumph W.O. To everyone who contributed to the success of the day a BIG thanks once again we have punched well above our weight in raising funds for a very worthwhile cause, well done. At the August noggin & natter several of our section members were presented with trophies awarded for activities or contributions over the 2018-19 motoring season. The branch lady’s trophy was awarded to Carol Taylor for her enormous contribution as part of the National Motorcycle Rally. Likewise, Glenn and Paula Harris jointly received the resurrected Crown awarded for an outstanding contribution. Again, in relation to the rally for his contribution in helping with the rally Ryan Harris was awarded the Patchett Cup as the most active junior member in branch activities. Within the motorcycle section Glenn received the Patron’s trophy for most attendance’s on motorcycle outings and Barry and Viv Hutchison won the new Fortitude Trophy for their effort in getting Viv’s AJS back on the road in time for the rally after a major motor disaster. Congratulations to all the winners. SHINY PARTS AUCTION CANCELLED Owing to staffing complications caused by health and other issues the branch committee has resolved to CANCEL the auction for this year. Items donated and catalogued to date will be stored and used next year. If anyone has items put aside ready to donate, they can still drop them off ready for next years event. Motorcycle Calendar Sunday September 15th Leave clubrooms 11am for lunch at Flaxbourne tea rooms at Ward, pies, fish and chips, burgers available, on premises liquor licence. Sunday 20th October Combined motorcycle and car run to Queen Charlotte (Linkwater) Tavern. Motorcycles will travel via Havelock, Cars via Picton. There are some long service badges to be presented during the stop at the tavern so to give time for that and the extra numbers for lunch an earlier start will be made. More details next newsletter.
