Chairman’s Report Thank you Cath and Kevin for your efforts in returning Harris Glade to looking like someone cares. Marlborough Lines have been in behind and mulching up the derby and have left the area tidy, job well done. I have asked Maurice to have a look at the two lights in Harris Glade. Bob and I have been about town and have seen a few people about what they can help with our Daffodil Day on the 25th, we have been humbled by the response we have received it has been amazing. Most things are in place now all we need is a good day, good support from the public and our own members who have never failed to surprise us with baking etc. With an influx of Veteran Cars coming into the area I had thought it maybe time that we think about running a Veteran Rally in the not to distant future. “Your thoughts please”. We’ll make a move on the shed to house the two trailers as soon as Daffodil Day is over Keep your eyes on coming events.

Club Captain’s Report I am a little bit out of touch as I have been in Sweden on grandfather duty and don't leave till next Monday 5th. Daffodil day is our main activity for August and Bob and our committee are doing a great job organizing it and as usual it will be a great success. On my travels here I have seen quite a few classic cars mainly of the American 50s and 60s usually driven by older blokes, every one to their own taste I guess, maybe they had their first naughty in one. Also in Vastervik I saw a line of military vehicles including 6 Willys Jeeps. Went to motor museum near Flem which would be the most expensive collection I have seen with vehicles from 1903 Oldsmobile curved dash which looked original to an immaculate Stanley Steamer and numerous RRs from very early, grandsons favorite was Mercedes 300 gullwing which recently changed hands for an eye watering price. I am looking forward to being back home and will see you Wednesday week. 4

Secretary’s Scribblings After my comments last month about the Jefferies Truck, we have had an approach from the Marlborough Vintage & Farm Machinery Society who donated the truck to the VCC several years ago. They would like the truck back as it is part of Marlborough’s history and they would not like to see it leave the district. After negotiations between Kelly and their Chairman the committee decided this was the best option, as we did not have anyone in the local Branch who wanted to take on this project. So the Truck will be shifted over the road when ground conditions allow. Plans are in the process of being drawn up for the extension of the lawnmower shed to house the BBQ trailer and a recently purchased Motorcycle Trailer. This project will keep our building crew busy for the next few months. Our main focus this month is the VCCs National Day, Daffodil Day. While many other branches around the country have a run or a rally and raise money this way, as you know we have done things differently here in the last two years, and with Bob O’Malley and Kelly Landon-Lane driving this we will once again have another very successful day at Brayshaw Park. This year other Park Societies are pitching in behind us to have much more happening than just old cars and bikes. We will need help on the day for this to run successfully so please put up your hand to help. We will need gate people and vehicle marshals, raffle ticket sellers, Cooks for the BBQ and Cooks and Bottlewashers in the Kitchen. We need home baked goodies to sell at Lunches and cuppas in the Redman room. We have already had donations of money and other items from around Marlborough to go towards this great cause, so thanks to those who have been involved so far. Other things happening behind the scenes. The Brayshaw Park Heritage Association are looking at the possibility of setting up video security cameras around the area to try and put a stop to damage and vandalism around the park. More on this next month. Under Catherine and Kevin Millar’s guidance, Harris Glade has been given a 9
good hair cut and thin out. The branches from this have been mulched for us and put in a pile to use as garden mulch. The large Pegasus sign from the roof of the Museum has now been painted by Blastcoat and just some finishing touches are needed before it will be back on the roof. There will be a run on September 1st to celebrate Father’s Day. This will be to the Cork and keg in Renwick for lunch. The Chairman’s run in to North Canterbury is coming up after Labour weekend so if you would like to be involved in any coming events, please put your name down on the sheet in the Redman room, or give me a ring or send me an email. The Branch email is marlborough@vcc.org.nz Kelly and I are going to the VCC National AGM in Greymouth on 16 th and 17th August. We have a Remit to the meeting about the presentation of 50 year badges where we feel it is appropriate to have a Branch Chairman or Patron to present these awards rather than have to wait for someone from the National Executive to be available. We will also talk about Electric Vehicles. With all the publicity about the push towards electric Vehicles on our roads, there needs to be a full and frank discussion about the pitfalls of these vehicles. No one is talking about the pollution caused in making the lithium batteries they use and the scrapping of the worn-out batteries after a few years of use, and what happens to these. It was decided that the delegates to the AGM should raise this for discussion to see if VCC NZ can offer some pushback on this. An item that comes up for discussion from time to time is people like us who enjoy driving our old cars on the open road. At times there are a few complaints about old vehicles holding up the traffic, so if you are in this space, please be a courteous driver and pull over when you can, and it is safe and let the others go. As the days start to lengthen and warm up a bit, have a happy month of Vintage motoring. Chris Bird

From the Blokes in the Shed… You have to hand it to the blokes, how they just get on with the various aspects of our activities with minimal instruction and supervision from the "four wise men" (ie custodians) A mere mention of the jumbled mess round the side of the mower shed has recently had a team round there sorting all the building materials and now have it looking great. Thank you team. Likewise, Ted, Lawrence, Roger and others have taken on and completed the unenviable chore of removing hoards of old buggered tyres from mostly old stuffed wheels. What a dirty, difficult and unpleasant task. I thank you blokes on behalf of the members. Yes Ted, I take your point, you are relieved of further tyre duties. Bloody marvellous. We receive an interesting variety of goods through our doors and this last month has been typical. Lots of curious onlookers and helpers as we sort through boxes of paint tins, all manner of electric stuff for Tiger to test and store. Boxes of spanners, carpenter tools, engines and gearboxes. (BMC). Rare Mors axles, radiators and miscellaneous parts, too numerous to mention. Just wonderful, keep it up people, all is appreciated.

Update from Your Kitchen Custodian Well folks only 5 months to Christmas. Whoops sorry for reminding you. The kitchen has been reasonably quite over the last couple of months, but we have some busy times coming up. July's natter and noggin was another good night with our movie night, with four short films one being a Laurel & Hardy then interval with our Ice Cream and Jaffa’s, then onto the main movie which was Genevieve, very enjoyable. Thank you to Bruce Dale for lending it to us and Barry Wilson our projector operator. Daffodil Day is coming up on the 25th August and we would like donations of baking plus if anyone would like to help in the kitchen during the day it would be appreciated. If you are able to help ring me on 02102657507 . Also I will be at the park on the Saturday afternoon form 1.30pm to 4pm for anyone that would like to drop of baking. VCC of NZ MARLBOROUGH BRANCH LIFE MEMBER CITATION Tony & Lorraine Payne
Tony has been a loyal and active member for over forty nine years during which time he has motored a variety of vehicles ranging from a veteran to vehicles in most of the other VCC classes. Some of the vehicles he restored himself to trophy winning standard and others he purchased in restored condition. He has been a regular attendee at local events and local branch rallies as well as rallies outside of Marlborough. He has a very good record of service to the branch having served on three separate terms as committee member totalling nine years, a term as club captain and one as chairman. Although she has only been a member for short time Lorraine has always actively supported Tony in all his VCC activities. She has been a constant tower of strength in the Branch for almost fifty years especially in the kitchen after the clubrooms were built and with the ladies group that was formed at that time.

VCC of NZ MARLBOROUGH BRANCH LIFE MEMBER CITATION Trevor & Doreen Harris Trevor joined the branch sometime in the early or mid seventies. Serving in the following roles; Secretary 1975 - 1993, Chairman 1995 - 96 and on the Committee 35 - 40yrs. His other committee roles included Delegate to the Brayshaw Park Users Committee, Museum Building Supervisor (one of three), Motorcycle Section Co-ordinator, Organiser, Secretary or committee member for numerous ranch or national rallies or events held in Marlborough, including two National Motorcycle Rallies and the VCC 50th Anniversary International Rally.
The Tappitt Hammer articles that appeared in the Vintage Viewpoint for several years were another time consuming commitment. Trevor would not have been able to out time and effort in without the support from Doreen. Even before she became a members she was an unofficial co-secretary and museum custodian. Doreen was a committee member for two years followed by two years as Club Captain. She was one of a group of lady members who initiated and ran the ladies committee which held their own meeting nights, outings and ran the kitchen and social events. One of the commitments she enjoyed was the organising of the children's Christmas parties at a time when the branch could muster thirty - forty members children to receive gifts from a Santa she pressed into fronting up. As well as actively helping organise and run local swapmeet, rallies and the gala weekends held to raise funds to build our museum clubroom's, she liaised with the Canterbury Swapmeet organisers booking sites for local members and management to keep most of our regular attendees all on adjacent sites. When the restoration of their Harley Davidson was completed Doreen sat on a cushion and did the navigating on local outings and rallies, other branch and many national motorcycle rallies. She was and still is proud of her 1929 De Soto & was grateful for the many hours of work donated by the local members. The last word on Doreen can be attributed to the late Ken Woolhead who was noted in the Marlborough Branch Historical record he produced in 1994 “the Marlborough Branch owed and enormous debt of gratitude to Doreen”.
DEALING WITH TODAY - PREPARING FOR TOMORROW by Rod Brayshaw Whether you like it or not, there is climate change, and getting rid of fossil fuel is generally seen as a logical answer. And we see this development reflected in society. Politicians and media are now more critical about motoring in two dimensions. Literal climate change, wherein fossil fuelled mobility is shown the exit door and Figurative climate change, with a critical approach of the “traditional motoring” industry and car ownership and use. • This results in the needs to develop a fuel strategy and to work on intensified lobbying, on the basis of obtaining stronger FIVA support to assist more International Members like the VCC. By dealing with today, preparing for 16
tomorrow and taking a look at the continued evolution of regulatory developments.
• We need to look at how the three factors interplay and what the impact may be on the future of motoring heritage with Vehicle use change by using Mobility as a service, Carpooling or e-hailing and how it could change the way vehicles are owned and used. Individuals may not own cars and possibly will be transported by business-owned vehicles. Environmental concerns will be the driver of policy. Also historic vehicles could potentially be banned from some roads and /or areas, “polluter pays” pricing could make use of historic vehicles prohibitively expensive. • Technical developments and regulatory action may lead to historic vehicles being unrecognised in a future traffic environment populated by autonomous and emission-free vehicles which interact with each other and the road infrastructure for safety and charging purposes. The preservation and maintenance of the vehicles may simply be no longer possible. • The VCC needs to demonstrate to politicians AND the public, the importance of keeping motoring heritage on the road because public perceptions can influence politicians who then legislate. The conclusion of the European Parliament’s reception to a paper named “Securing the future of our mobile heritage” is that the historic vehicle movement and regulators need to continue to work together as the challenges are going to become greater. Some challenges will require technical solutions, some will require political solutions, some both. Historic Vehicle movements must be responsible road users and must communicate with politicians at every level… • Let’s aim to be positive. It is possible that in the future traffic populated by Hybrid-Electric vehicles & historic vehicles will be openly welcomed for bringing yesterday to today but it will take work, not just by the VCC and its Management Committee, you all have a responsibility. • FIVA has lobbied for many years for a general EU-wide exemption of historic vehicles. A first success is the recommendation in the UVAR report (2017). Historic vehicles could be exempted from low emission zones (LEZ) because of their minimal use in the regulated areas combined with their contribution to the preservation of motoring heritage. LEZs would thus disproportionately penalise particularly urban-based owners and businesses servicing historic vehicles since practically no retrofitting possibilities exist. 17
MOTORCYCLE NEWS SHINY PARTS AUCTION The shiny parts auction is coming up on September 29th. The running of the auction is traditionally left in the hands of the motorcycle section members. Some of the usual helpers are unavailable so I will need a couple of volunteers to hold up the items and spot bidders and help set up the room and the items. In the mean time we need to accumulate a wide variety of items to sell either as donations or on commission. Automotive parts or accessories, bric a brac, cooking, books, produce, tools, all the surplus stuff you no longer want we will take it. Remember old father time is hovering and our kids do not want to be burdened with sorting out all the stuff we have accumulated over the 70 years. Drop it off at the club rooms or at 6 Milford Street and we will try and turn it into dollars and cents. Of course, we also need punters to buy the treasurers on offer so try and come along and join in what has traditionally been a fun afternoon with some excellent items up for discerning buyers to bid on. Last year we were favoured with our largest ever array of good items and our smallest attendance which was a pity. New members should be aware political correctness is not a feature of the auction. Regrettably last year’s auctioneers, Major Knock-up and Private Parts are unavailable this year. We understand they will be confined in a convict settlement across the Tasman. It appears the more refined members of the motorcycle section will be reverted too as has been the policy in the past. Please do not leave it until the last minute to drop off your donations. Doing the cataloguing and setting up the auction is a huge job, thanks. As mentioned in the last Viewpoint several branch and motorcycle section trophies are still to be presented. We would like to get this done at the branch noggin and natter on Friday 30th August. We also intend to have Linda’s photos taken at the rally showing for the benefit of branch and entrants who missed them showing on the screen at the rally presentation. For the trophy winners it would be nice to have a good attendance of their fellow section members. 18
MOTORCYCLE REPORT Riding to the Woody to meet up with the Nelson group on what might have been the wettest weekend of the year so far created as much interest as being asked to kiss your sister. However, nine of our members fronted up, six of them on motorcycles and three in cars. We out numbered the Nelson riders by the same number, nine. Quite understandable in view of the weather. Mine host at the Woody had the fire blazing, it was warm inside, the tucker was of the usual high standard, someone produced several old motorcycle magazines, intelligent conversations took place and we were home in time to watch a replay of the rugby providing the wife was not watching the netball. After exploring several options for motorcycle trailer, e.g. converting a boat trailer we had donated or getting one built, we have acquired a factory built Briford motorcycle trailer from Greymouth. The seller even delivered it to Blenheim for us. Zig and Glenn have done some work on adapting it for our wider vintage era wheels and tyres. We intend to fit a toolbox to accommodate tie downs etc, maybe a front stone shield and we will be all ready to go.
To avoid any misconceptions the motorcycle section is using up the branch profit from the recent motorcycle rally, I can clarify all cost so far and those to come have been covered by members of the motorcycle section who refunded the money paid to them for expenses they incurred in petrol or items supplied for the rally. A big thanks is due to the members concerned for their generosity.

MARLBOROUGH SPORTING TRIAL MARLBOROUGH BRANCH VINTAGE CAR CLUB OF NEW ZEALAND SUNDAY 18th AUGUST 2019 at BLENHEIM We have a new venue this year in the Kaituna Valley between Renwick and Havelock. Bring your gumboots! Members of the Vintage Car Club are invited to participate in our Sporting Trial. The event follows the style of “Trials” events which were popular in the UK in the 1950s, where drivers and their crews endeavor to get their cars as far as possible up steep and slippery farm tracks and through other difficult courses. A number of these courses will be set out and points are awarded for the distance attained. The cumulative score at the end of the event will determine the winners of the various classes. The event will conclude with a prize giving at the Woodbourne Tavern Renwick where nibbles will be provided.
Eligibility •
All entrants must be members of the Vintage Car Club of NZ (Inc) and hold a current membership card and drivers license. • The event is for pre 1960, front engined, two wheel drive, VCC eligible vehicles. The maximum number of entries per car is two drivers. • Entered vehicles must be in a safe mechanical condition and will be inspected prior to the Event. Normal road tyres only can be used. No snow or mud grip tyres. Space saver tyres will be permitted. Please check your tyres to make sure they comply. • The event officials have the final say in this matter. Differentials will be checked to ensure they are working.
Classes Class one - Short wheelbase - 90” or less Class two - Long wheelbase - over 90” Other prize categories; First Lady, Best Dressed and the coveted ‘Ballsup” trophy. The event organizers will have the final say in this matter. Each class will be judged separately and have a class winner. The overall highest points scorer will be declared the winner. 20

Cars must be pre 1960, front engine two wheel drive. Distance from centre of front axle to the front spark plug must not exceed 1/5th (20%) of the wheelbase Differentials must not be locked or of limited slip type. Please do not cause embarrassment to everyone by turning up with a stiff diffy.

Brakes must not operate independently on individual wheels, i.e. fiddle brakes are not allowed. Seating for driver and passenger must face forward and the back of the front row of seats must be between the axles. Dual wheels are not allowed. Centre pivoted front axles, if used, must have stops fitted to limit the travel to +/- 15 deg (this is to reduce the chance of a car rolling when a rear wheel lifts on a hill side). Tyre bead clamps are permitted. Road tyres only can be used; these must be of a width and section appropriate to the pre 1960 style of car used, and to the spirit of the event. Tyres designed for off road use are not permitted, for example dual purpose, mud grip, town and country trail bike etc. Tyres must have a tread pattern such that the blocks are not more than 10mm deep nor more than 10mm apart laterally or circumferentially. There must not be an uninterrupted lateral gap between the side blocks i.e. from side to side. The enhancing of the tread pattern by re-cutting is unacceptable. Cars must meet an acceptable safety standard, including - secure battery, seats and fuel tank, safe steering and suspension, double throttle return springs, easily identifiable ignition on/off switch.
All entrants must agree to abide by the rules and regulations for the event and sign the indemnity form on the back of the entry form, which is available from the branch or phone Peter Thwaite.
The object of the event is to get as far as possible through the courses which are set out for the event. Black numbered markers, which must be kept on the right of the car, indicate the achieved score. White markers indicate the left side of the course. If you stray off course, or touch a marker, the previous marker will be the score achieved. Some discretion will be given by the marshals, to alter the course slightly, to assist long wheelbase cars through any tight corners. 21
As the event is being held on the private property, and a working dairy farm, entrants, their friends, crew members and spectators must be respectful of the owners property and be sure all rubbish is taken with you. You will therefore confine yourself to the area of the event. When traveling around the property do not exceed 10kph and stay on the defined tracks. Leave stock gates as you have found them. There is to be no practicing or hooning around on other open areas. Passengers may be carried provided there are passenger seats in the vehicle. Passengers must be in the normal forward facing, seated position. Passengers must be over the age of 16 years and have signed the indemnity form which will be available at the event. Your vehicle is to be driven in a safe and sensible manner and with care at all times, taking into account the conditions for each individual test.
The organizers will exclude entrants from the event if they fail to do so. Entries will be accepted or declined at the discretion of the organising committee. This includes late arrivals.

Directions to the Venue We are using the same property as last year, but possibly in a different spot. We are hoping to have an easier parking area next to a woolshed. I will keep you informed if there are any major changes. On Highway 6 between Blenheim and Havelock, 13kms from the upper Wairau bridge heading towards Nelson from Blenheim. From Nelson, approximately 10 kms from Havelock, just after the Long Valley Rd turn off on your left. The venue will be well sign posted. CAUTION: You will be exiting and entering Highway 6. This road can be busy, take extreme care.

1947 2 Door Morris 8.E. Body off Chassis restoration. Sand blast body chassis etc. All new brakes, shoes, cylinders, new rubbers on all windows. Body has been painted. Front and Back Guards need painting. New hood lining. Carpets back and front side panels. Seats back & front need upholstering. Good battery. Motor needs rebuilding, motor has been striped for inspection. Motor is back in car to keep parts together. Some spare parts.
