Chairman’s Report May I congratulate all winners of club trophies. I must thank Rob, Kevin, Wayne, Bob and others for the work they have done on the Model A Truck and anyone else who has put some energy into getting up and running. The Daffodil Day on the 25th August is under way with getting advertising and supporters with donations. Brayshaw Park Societies are also going to join us, so it should be another great day.
Thanks John for the couple of hours fun at the ten pin bowling, a really good afternoons entertainment. I did hope to have some final details on the Chairman’s Run, leaving club rooms 29th October back about 2 or 3rd November. Hopefully will have it sorted in about a week. Going into North Canterbury area. 1st night at Hanmer then onto Rangiora. For Hanmer it has been suggested we look at booking houses which can sleep 3 to 4 couples.
Just a wee thanks to Marg and Barry for supplying daffodil bulbs which Cath has planted around the grounds and I see that they are growing nicely. Kevin has been busy trimming trees and Barry has cleaned out the gutters, thanks guys. We have the great facilities let’s keep it that way. Thanks everyone. This has been hard on the brain, going for a sleep now.

Branch Life Time Memberships Over the past month or so several life time memberships have been awarded and were very well deserved. Over the next two or three months these outstanding members will be acknowledged in the Vintage Viewpoint with the citation and photos of the awards. In this issue of the Vintage Viewpoint we have write-ups are for recipients' Barry & Margaret Wilson (P.11) and Rae & Lyn Fairweather (P.12). 4
Club Captain’s Report The June run to Glenlee Station last month was I think a success, I certainly enjoyed it and so did the Model A once it was off the tar seal and in its element though I believe a Jaguar was quite happy to be back on the seal. Thanks to Robbie and Sharon Hamilton for the wonderful venue. The main event for this month is the snow run to St Arnaud on 14th July. A ticket will be required for the meal and the close off day was last week but if your circumstances have changed and you want to attend try sweet talking David Bool for a ticket you may be in luck. August brings us to daffodil day for the Marlborough branch of the Cancer Society and Bob and Kelly has the planning well under control. I am due to fly out of New Zealand on Wednesday to Sweden on grandfather duties and be back 7th August. September is shaping up to be quiet at this stage as my plan might have been too dependent on ground condition and it is felt it would be better later in the season. In contrast October looks to be full on with the Canterbury swap meet on the weekend 12th and the combined run to Linkwater with the motor cycle section. The branch has not had a Presidents Run for some time and we are looking at Tuesday 29th October for 4 nights. At this stage we are looking at north Canterbury with first night at Hanmer, depending on your vehicle and inclination you can either go through Molesworth or the coast road your choice. We are organizing places that will interest the blokes and this also coincides with the Hurunui Garden Festival should that interest you. Venues are being looked with Rangiora and Rolleston mentioned, the return route could be via the Rainbow returning on coast road or Lewis Pass. More about that further down the track. Last but not least the Nelson branch is organizing a combined rally weekend 9th 10th November.

Secretary’s Scribblings Another month has gone past very quickly it seems. Doesn’t seem that long since I wrote my last report. Sharon had a great time down in Fiordland and Southland in June. Had 6 days out in Doubtful and Dusky Sounds on the Affinity. Some great fishing with Groper and Blue Cod caught and eaten with some cod to bring home with us. Learnt about the early European history as well with Captain Cook having used Dusky Sound as an anchorage to repair his ship on his second voyage to NZ in 1773. We walked to Astronomers Point where his party accurately fixed their position after setting course from the Antarctic area where they were looking for the southern land mass, to arrive on the coast only a few miles away from where they were supposed to be. An amazing feat of navigation in the days well before GPS and all the modern aids we have today. We had a few days around Te Anau after a fantastic helicopter flight over the mountains. What great views from up in the air. We went to Invercargill for 2 nights and visited the Bill Richardson Transport World. Spent 4 hours there and I don’t think we saw it all. Well worth while going back. Went out to Bluff and had a great meal of oysters and Blue Cod from Fowlers fish shop just as you come into Bluff. It was so good we went back the second night as well. We headed north up through The Catlins, and what wonderful scenery up through that part of NZ that we had never seen before. Spent a night in Dunedin with my brother, then on to Oamaru and the Steam Punk theme area, and to Dots Castle at Riverstone for lunch and a look around then to Oxford with my family for a few days. From our Committee Meeting on Wednesday. The Branches Model A truck is now back on the road after a motor rebuild. Thanks to Rob, Kevin, Wayne, Jim, Bob and others who have worked on this project. (See Page 13). Thanks also go to Marg and Barry Wilson for the donation of Daffodil bulbs which have been planted around the grounds. Also, Kevin Millar who has trimmed trees along the right of way near the railway line, to make mowing easier. 7
The Committee has decided to build an extension onto the lawnmower shed to house the BBQ trailer and a motorcycle trailer when that arrives, as storage of these items is becoming a problem. There are about 300 bricks surplus to requirements which are to be sold, so if you want some of these, they are available at 20 cents each. For some time, the Committee has been discussing the future of the Jefferies Truck which is on display at the end of the Electrical shed. I have been tasked to approach a suitable transport Museum to see if they would be interested in this vehicle, as no one locally has put their hand up to do anything with it. If anyone has any ideas, please let us know. Organisation of our very successful Daffodil Day on 25th August is in full swing, with Kelly and Bob approaching businesses for donations and displays for the day. We already have many donations for this, and one is of John Deere Toys which will be raffled to raise funds to donate to the Cancer Society. So, when you are asked to sell some tickets, please don’t be backward in coming forward. They will be available in books of 6 tickets at $2 per ticket or a book for $10. Congratulations to those members who were presented with Honorary Membership of the Branch both at the AGM and the Mid-winter dinner and Prize Giving. Peter and Margaret Holdaway, David and Judith Bruce and Carroll and Graham Wiblin have all given long and meritorious service to the Branch over many years and we thank them for that. Stuart Johnson was awarded his 60-year badge at Smoko a couple of weeks ago, and John May is to be awarded his 60-year badge next week. Happy vintage motoring for the month.

From the Blokes in the Shed… I recently acquired a tatty book printed in the 1920s (100 years ago) by the Progress committee of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce. What a interesting read it's been. The list of contents reads of all number of interesting aspects of Marlborough. No rail to Christchurch. The sunshine stakes were a forgone conclusion.
One chapter intrigued me. Petroleum prospects: Many of you know of the small gas field in the hill behind the Buick property up the Ure Valley. On occasions, I read of a flame burning from amongst the rocks. An early settler in the 1880s reported a gas spring at the head of the Kekerangu Valley. Also oil floating on a pool in the Ure Valley about 1912. So there's an interesting bit of info for you. Now to things spares dept. We sold the Morris 1100. Phew! Thank goodness that's gone. We still have a Morris Minor and a Austin Maxi. Both vehicles are runners. The Morry sounds really good, ticks over nicely. The boys have tidied up round the back of the sheds. great effort. Now there's cleaning up by the mower shed. What a bloody mess that was. Starting to look like a usable tidier area. Commerce wise, things are a little quieter over the colder Wednesdays. The blokes are cheerful and busy as usual. We have received some more treasure through the doors. N.O.S. bearings from Bearing and Accessories, who have just moved premises. Thank You People.

Update from Your Kitchen Custodian Another quite month in the kitchen, accept for Wednesday mornings which are still very busy with our usual crowd of 60 to 70 in for their catch up of stories. The presentation dinner at Armadillos was another enjoyable outing and our Noggin & Natter Pot Luck tea was enjoyed by all that attended, with plenty food and a great variety to choose from. Recently we catered for the Baden Powell Society, with a BBQ luncheon. I received a lovely thank you letter from them and would like to share it with you " Just a quick note to say thank you to you & your team for the lovely lunch you served to the 26 of the Trefoil & Baden Powell Guild members. Even your table setting was so well done & I only had good comments from the folks as they departed. Please pass our thanks also to Barry Wilson for giving up his time to show the movie”. I would also like to thank the ladies that helped. The ‘Natter & Noggin’ this month on the 26th July is Bangers & Mash with a movie. $15 pp.

VCC of NZ MARLBOROUGH BRANCH LIFE MEMBER CITATION Barry and Margaret (Marg) Wilson Barry transferred to our branch in the late 1970’s or early ‘80s and quickly took on an active role in our branch’s management serving two separate terms on the committee. He has been the branch Chairman twice, Club Captain, Secretary & newsletter editor. For sometime he has been the branch Librarian and his sorting of the books and magazines into public library standard has been enormous , time consuming and an on-going task. He has a wide range of fix-it skills and repairs that need doing to the clubrooms only need to be mentioned in Barry’s hearing and they are done, often before he is even asked. His restoration of two Singer S’s, a Junior and a Porlock required a high degree of patience and skill. The finished vehicles were of a high standard and the mileages accumulated by his two small capacity vehicles on our branch outings and rallies and other branch, National and International events through out New Zealand is testimony to the quality of their restoration and maintenance. Throughout all Barry's achievements Margie has always been there supporting him. She served in her own right as a committee member and newsletter editor. Her presence as a kitchen helper has been constant since the early days of our clubrooms and active ladies committee. Hand crafted items she made and donated over the years for raffles have been regular and appreciated, worthwhile donations. Marg and Barry currently put together our newsletters after they are printed and attend to the distribution. 11
VCC of NZ MARLBOROUGH BRANCH LIFE MEMBER CITATION Rae & Lyn Fairweather Rae was a foundation member and has been active within the branch for over sixty years. During that time he has restored numerous vehicles to a very high standard. Some of his restorations won concours trophies locally and at other VCC events. Over the years he has owned vehicles and motorcycles ranging from veteran and vintages through to the later classics and they have been widely diverse in makes and countries of origin. He has on many occasions helped other members with their restorations and has loaned vehicles to members to enable them to take part in rallies or on local outings. Over the years he has served several terms on the Branch committee totalling seventeen years all told, and has also been Club Captain, a Spares Custodian and is currently a VIC inspector. Although she has not personally been a member Lyn has actively shared in Rae's VCC activities and has made a valued contribution to the success of the branch over many years. She played a large part in the ladies committee which ran the first kitchen and the catering and social events. Lyn made the curtains for the first museum meeting room and regularly cleaned them museums windows. She is still seen on a regular basis helping with the morning teas and other catering activities.

Branch Model A Truck Restoration Completed!
The branch Model A truck is back in service with overhauled motor serviced, new WoF etc . Engine Restorations in Levin have done a good job re white metalling the main bearings and general overhaul of rest of the block, then back here for a valve grind, clutch, timing gear reassembled, refitted, tuned, generator overhauled etc . Many thanks to Kevin Millar, Wayne Frew, Jim McLean, John Pauling, Jonny Johnson and Tiger, who all gave many hours and their mechanical skills, to get this job done well. To any member who may use this vehicle on a club run, ‘PLEASE ‘learn first from another Model A owner, how to drive an A properly, learn how adjust the advance/retard timing and mixture controls as you drive, fiddling with these adjustments as you drive is most important to get the best, smoothest, most efficient ,economical running from the engine. Also Model A’s run best if run around 40 to 45 miles an hour, no more - any hard or fast driving will kill the engine quickly. So drive it carefully and treat it better than your own car! Marlborough Vintage Car Club Club Vehicle Policy The Marlborough VCC Branch has several vehicles available for the short term loan to VCC Branch Members for their use and enjoyment. Each vehicle is controlled by a Branch appointed Custodian. Branch Members wishing to borrow a Club vehicle need to arrange it with the respective Custodian. The loan will be in accordance with the following conditions :1) The User must be a current financial member of the Marlborough Branch of the VCC. 2) The User must have a current full unrestricted NZ Class 1 driving license and be competent to operate the Vehicle. 3) The loan is for a short defined period only. Maximum period is 1 week. Longer periods will require Branch Committee agreement. 4) There is no financial or other benefit to either the User or the Branch. 5) The User to obey all current road laws, rules & regulations. The User will be responsible and liable for any infringement, fines etc as well as any consequences. 6) The User is to be alcohol or drug free when using the vehicle 7) The User and other occupants are not to smoke within or about the vehicle. 8) The Branch is not responsible for and will be indemnified against any personal damage or loss. 9) The User is responsible for any damage incurred that is not covered by the Branch insurance including any insurance excess. 10) If the vehicle is being held overnight by the User it is to be stored in a securely locked weather tight garage or building. 11) The vehicle to be used on public roads only except if it is being used on a Marlborough VCC rally route that incorporates private roads & tracks. 12) The vehicle is to be washed prior and returned to the Branch in a clean undamaged condition with the same fuel level as received. 13) Any damage or faults with the vehicle are to be promptly reported to the Custodian as soon as possible after the event. The Custodian will have the following responsibilities :To be appointed by the Branch Committee and have their details recorded in the Branch register. 1) To be appointed by the Branch Committee and have their details recorded in the Branch register. 2) To ensure that the vehicle is maintained in a good road worthy condition. 3) To ensure that the vehicle documentation (WOF, Registration etc) is current. 4) To coordinate Member loan requests, completion of the Vehicle Loan form, and upon return, the checking of the vehicle plus return of keys. 5) To obtain Branch Committee approval prior to any expenses being incurred for the vehicle. 6) To ensure that the vehicle is normally stored at the Club premises when not in use, or being maintained, repaired etc. 7) To ensure that any maintenance, repairs, modifications etc are only carried out by persons or organisations approved by the Branch Committee 15

MOTORCYCLE NEWS SHINY PARTS AUCTION The auction will be held on a date to be confirmed in September or early October. In the mean time we need to accumulate a wide variety of items to sell either as donations or on commission. Automotive parts or accessories, bric a brac, cooking, books, produce, tools, all the surplus stuff you no longer want we will take it. Remember old father time is hovering and our kids do not want to be burdened with sorting out all the stuff we have accumulated over the 70 years. Drop it off at the club rooms or at 6 Milford Street and we will try and turn it into dollars and cents. Of course, we also need punters to buy the treasurers on offer so try and come along and join in what has traditionally been a fun afternoon with some excellent items up for discerning buyers to bid on. Last year we were favoured with our largest ever array of good items and our smallest attendance which was a pity. New members should be aware political correctness is not a feature of the auction. Regrettably last year’s auctioneers, Major Knock-up and Private Parts are unavailable this year. We understand they will be confined in a convict settlement across the Tasman. It appears the more refined members of the motorcycle section will be reverted too as has been the policy in the past. Please do not leave it until the last minute to drop off your donations. Doing the cataloguing and setting up the auction is a huge job, thanks. OH DEAR NEARLY A DISASTER There is a story going the rounds about a member who is nearing the end of a long and patient restoration. The vehicle is an English model fitted with trafficators. You know those temperamental illuminated little arms that were supposed to shoot out of the door pillars to indicate a turn. Sometimes you had to give the door pillar a hefty thump to help activate the trafficator. It was obvious to our member his trafficators were not going to function so he carefully removed all the dirt, dust, cobwebs etc and gave them some liberal squirts of a well-known manufacturers product which claimed to clean and lubricate auto electrical parts. Not wishing to get the product on his clean bench he laid the trafficators on newspapers on the bench, he hooked the trafficators to a battery and low and behold the arms extended and retracted like a boxers left jab. The smile of success quickly disappeared when the trafficators erupted in flames as did the newspapers, so did the cloth he tried to smother the flames with. The 17
hairs on the back of his hands, his eyebrows and the hair above his ears also disappeared as he swept the inferno off the bench onto the floor and proceeded to do a fair imitation on the fire of an All Black team performing a Haka. All is well that ends well. New trafficators can be found and his eyebrows will grow back. He probably will not use that product for a while.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT GARAGE RUN Three sheds were visited on the annual garage run. The high standard of restoration and presentation was matched by the equally high standard of the garages and workshops visited. Clean motorcycles, clean floors, work benches clean and tidy, tools all clean and tidy and in the right places. Some of us felt very guilty. By my count 23 members turned out at some stage, some came in the morning, some came for lunch, some came in the afternoon and some never came at all owing to overseas travel, family commitments etc. TROPHY PRESENTATIONS Congratulations to Paul who deservedly won both the motorcycle concours Keown Cup and the Branch Popular Vote trophy with his 1923 Ace Four. A very rare feat to accomplish. Several other motorcycle section members won section branch awards but were not able to be present to receive them. The awards are worthy of being presented formally rather have them dropped off on the members doorstep. We (the branch committee) are hoping to present the trophies at a time where the trophy winners can receive the acclaim and congratulations, they deserve. Thanks to our retired branch club captain for his support and co-operation during his time as club captain, much appreciated Bob. Trevor

Who Hasn’t Got time for a Laugh? A blonde was on holiday and driving through Darwin. She desperately wanted to take home a pair of genuine crocodile shoes but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking. After becoming very frustrated with the "no haggle on prices" attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the blonde shouted, "Well then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own crocodile, so I can get a pair of shoes for free". The shopkeeper said with a sly, knowing smile, "Little lady, just go and give it a try"! The blonde headed out toward the river, determined to catch a crocodile! Later in the day, as the shopkeeper is driving home, he pulls over to the side of the river bank where he spots the same young blonde woman standing waist deep in the murky water, a shotgun in her hand. Just then, he spots a huge 3 metre croc swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning speed, she takes aim, kills the creature and hauls it onto the slimy banks of the river. Lying nearby were 7 more of the dead creatures, all lying on their backs. The shopkeeper stood on the bank, watching in silent amazement.
The blonde struggled and flipped the Croc onto it's back - Rolling her eyes heavenward and screaming in great frustration, she shouts out......... " SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO"! Contributed by Chris Bird Read an interesting article in last weeks Press; Describing the life of an Aussie Shearers wife, who at 73 became the editor of a local country newspaper. Prior to her becoming editor, the paper had once intended to report that two school pupils presented the hospital board president with a “transistorised clock for the ladies” in the labour ward. Unfortunately the letter “L” in clock was left out in typesetting. The hospital matron called the editor to say she had 200 women outside the building clamouring to get in.
