Editors Note Here it is, a few days later than I usually plan for, following a couple of unplanned trips away and a resultant very full inbox, which I have successfully all cleared up I look forward to the weather improving and the chance to take Olive out for a run (once her hiccups are fixed) 27 September will see me donning by best Dapper outfit and joining over 80 fellow participants for a fun drive through the Wairarapa. Report from the Chair Another month gone and the first faint signs of spring have appeared. The month started with an enjoyable club night when we hosted the Wairarapa Vintage Machinery Club for the annual quiz night. This event was well attended by both VCC and Machinery Club members. The questions set by the Machinery Club were quite tough which resulted in a close contest with the eventual winners once again being a team from the VCC. I attended the National AGM in Palmerston North in the middle of the month. With the revised club constitution settled this was a relatively quiet affair with no contentious issues on the agenda. A couple of items of interest to members were raised. The first was concerns raised about the responses some members have received from the VERO call centre. The National Chairman outlined some of the discussions that have been ongoing with VERO regarding the relationship between the two parties and undertook to circulate a briefing paper to all branches to inform members of the nature of these discussions. The second item of general interest was the financial report. In the last financial year the Club received extraordinary income from the sale of its old offices which in the overall result masked the fact that it recorded an operating loss of $71k. The budget for this financial year predicts an operating loss of $85k. Whilst the Club has reserves that will cover the expected loss this financial year they can only do so for a short time. The losses are largely due to significant increases in production costs for the Beaded Wheels and postage. The National Office is making efforts to save costs but the expectation is that an increase in the annual Club subscription will be necessary. We expect to receive a proposal for an increase in the coming months. The weather gods did us no favours last weekend when we had to reluctantly postpone the Daffodil Day Car Show. The weather on the day was appalling and with little prospect of immediate improvement the call to postpone had to be made. The organisers had worked hard to prepare for the day and with over 200 advance entries it was shaping up to be a most successful event. Fortunately we have been able to secure an alternative date so we are looking forward to a fine day on the 18th of October. I hope that those who entered for the original day can make it on the new date and for those who didn’t enter please consider entering. The Cancer Society provides a valuable service to our community and deserves our support.

Far North Tour The dates (Nov 6,7,8) We start in Whangarei on the Friday the 6th with a dinner and entry packs handed out. Leave Saturday morning (7th) for a tour around the top of the North Island eventually arriving at Mangonui. You will need to book your accommodation now, with dinner at the Mangonui Boating Club. Long term members and those of you who have attended the AGM will have heard of the Torque Hudson Trophy. Many newer members may not be aware of it so here is a brief explanation of what the trophy represents and how it is awarded. The Torque Hudson Trophy is awarded each year to the Branch Member who contributes most to club events as a participant or organiser. It is named after Torquil Hudson a long time Martinborough resident who joined the branch in 1967. Torquil was a firm believer in the strength of a club coming from active participation by its members. He was a keen rally participant bot in local events and in events organised by other branches throughout the North Island. He supported and mentored new members and generally offered encouragement to all. Torquil passed away in 1982 and in 1984 the trophy was named in his memory. The winner is determined by a points system where members who attend a club night earn 5 points, participation in a weekend Branch event earns 5 points with an additional 5 points if you participate in your club eligible vehicle. At the end of the year the member with the most points wins the trophy. For this event the year runs from June to May with the trophy presented at the AGM in June each year. It is important for members must fill out the attendance register at each club night and weekend rally legibly and accurately, not only so we know who has attended but also to ensure that Torque Hudson Trophy points are accrued.

For Sale 1929 RILEY Nine After 30 years of motoring and motor sport enjoyment with his 1929 Riley Nine (pictured), motoring historian Scott Thomson is seeking a new owner for the car. Details as follows: a professional reconstruction with Riley parts to Brooklands configuration, (undertaken by Chris North in the 1970s). The car was then owned by Ron Roycroft before being acquired by Scott. Its motor sport history includes overall handicap winner 1997 Targa NZ, •The car has VCC and MSNZ documentation, is fully roadworthy, and comes with various spare parts. TIN CAN RALLY DRIVE YOUR TIN CAN
BRING A TIN CAN On Saturday October 3rd the TIN CAN RALLY will be held to support the Food Bank. Jump in your tin can (Car), and bring along a can (or cans) of food which will be donated to the food bank after the rally. The rally will start at the Masterton Railway station. Be there by 9:30, briefing at 9:45, then cars away. This is an all day rally, please bring your lunch to enjoy at a country hall. Some of the roads are good gravel.
