Chairman’s report August 2026

It was a bitterly cold morning that greeted us for the Henry Ford’s birthday car show but as a testament to the hardiness of our local car enthusiasts we had over 45 cars turn up at Seddon Square, on the 25th of July. What a great selection of vehicles on display, lots of Ford products. The Ford Mustang was well represented with most of the models in the show. Thanks to Timaru Motors for supporting the event with the loan of a new Ranger. We did manage to kick off the fundraising for Daffodil Day.

Congratulations to Bruce Buchanan for winning the club’s award for the day with his outstanding 1939 Mercury sedan, well done. Last year’s winner was also a Mercury.

A big thanks, this month, to Maureen for all the event social media exposure and also for the work that has gone into setting up our new newsletter template, well done, you rock.

Not long now until the Daffodil Day events roll around and the first is the scooter run, on the 15th. Get those mopeds fuelled up and ready to go. Any enquires, talk to Owen, 021 2942158.

We have been kindly granted access to the old FarmSource building, on the main street, for a display to promote Daffodil Day. Hopefully we will be able to set up a colourful display involving cars, motorcycles, balloons and posters that will run for a couple of weeks prior to Daffodil Day, on the 22nd. Thanks to Geoff Wallace and Don Chamberlain for making this possible.

We have posters for the Daffodil Day events available so if you would like to put some these up at your workplace, or somewhere public, please contact Maureen or myself.

After minimal communication from the Interislander over the renewal of discounted fare rates that finished on 15 December 2025, the Club has made the decision to work exclusively with Bluebridge as our preferred ferry provider. Bluebridge have provided competitive pricing for Club members for the period 1 November 2026 – 31 October 2027, as per the attached document. This document can also be found on our website under Membership Benefits. The Interislander has discounts available for AA members, NZMCA members and Gold card holders as outlined on their website under Deals and offers.

I just wanted to share with you that Age Concern are staging a Staying Safe Refresher Driving Course for older drivers and I am sure some of you members will be interested. Staying Safe Refresher is a friendly, informative classroom course designed to help older drivers stay safe, confident and independent on the road. Delivered by a professional driving instructor, the course is discussion-based with no on-road driving and no driving test, making it a relaxed and enjoyable way to refresh your knowledge of current road rules and safe driving practices. You'll learn practical tips for today's roads, discuss ways to adapt to changing driving conditions, and have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and share experiences with others. The course includes a light lunch and is completely free to attend, thanks to our funders, although donations are always warmly appreciated. Whether you've been driving for decades or simply want to update your knowledge and boost your confidence, Staying Safe is a great way to help you continue driving safely, confidently and independently for years to come.

Micro Cars

Microcars have been defined as "very compact, smallengined cars, designed for use in large cities, especially in Japan", even though in Japan such cars are known as kei cars. Microcars have also been defined as being a "small car, popular in the 1950s, that featured a body offering full weather protection and mechanics often derived from motorcycle technology", though in the 1950s, a trend towards egg-shaped cars with a relatively large ratio of windows to bodywork meant that the affectionate term bubble car was used.

The term microcar is usually applied only to such small cars built after World War II; cars built prior to the war are more generally referred to as cyclecars. However, one dictionary definition states simply that a microcar is "a small fuel-efficient automobile".

An attempt at a more specific definition for microcars suggested by some enthusiasts is "economy vehicles with either three or four wheels, powered by petrol engines of no more than 700 cc or battery electric propulsion, and manufactured since 1945".

In short, defining what is or what is not a microcar is not an exact science. Microcar is a subjective common noun, so no list will ever be definitive. But with museums devoted solely to microcars, numerous published encyclopaedias of microcars and microcar enthusiast clubs worldwide, there is a lot of interest in these vehicles and the accompanying photos are of some of the most popular models.
