Chairmans Report March 2026.
With the Wallaby Run successfully completed on the 14th of February I would like to say well done and put out a big thank you to all of the people who helped put this great event together.
Thanks to Owen, Barry, Peter, Trevor and Bill for the Scooter Run on the 28th of February. We had 10 scooters and mopeds enjoying the sunshine and our district’s back roads.
The scrap metal sales are going well, and again, thanks to Owen for taking away a couple of loads.
Wednesday morning meetings are being well supported, and everyone is encouraged to call in.
Keep an eye on the events listing, there is a lot on around the district, this month.
I came across an interesting article in Richard H Robinson’s book, titled, Stationary Engines made in New Zealand. The book has an article on, local man, Mr D H Bird, of Painstown Road, Waimate. In 1909 Harold Bird designed and built a 2hp stationary engine, a remarkable feat, but he also designed a strikingly modern looking W6 aero engine. The aero engine was built in the very early days of flying, in fact, only seven years after the Wright Brothers and Richard Pearse got off the ground. Although the aero engine was not flown it stands as an outstanding achievement by a local man.

Waimate turned on one of the summer’s nicest sunny days for our annual Wallaby Run. 26 participants brought along an extremely diverse variety of vehicles, everything from Trevor Holland’s exceptional 1913 Model T to, field test winner, Dawn Perkins, in the Mazda MX3 sports car.
After a tour around Waimate’s scenic country roads we stopped at the McCullochs Bridge Reserve for a relaxing picnic lunch and, for the competitive entrants, the three field tests. The results of these tests revealed some wildly differing estimates of distance and of the ability to drive forward exactly one wheel rotation. One of the tests of the day was to recall, after a quick viewing, a relatively large number of objects in a box. The results revealed, overall, that our participants had excellent recall ability, well done VCC.
The McCullochs Bridge Reserve is a beautiful, well-maintained destination, our appreciation goes out to the Waimate Disrtict Council for this great venue.
Thanks to all those who came along and shared this day of socialising and motoring, with us, in our beautiful district.
Congratulations to all the prize winners, thanks to our team of organisers and we look forward to seeing all those participated again next year.
The senior citizens ride and afternoon tea was another successful afternoon, thanks to our drivers and what a first-class afternoon tea, provided for our guests, at the clubrooms , a huge thanks to Rosemary, Sharon and Elaine.
