A just like that the year is half gone.

I get the pleasant vibe that the club is gaining in enthusiasm with participation numbers up on most events that have been run. Breakfasts, Coffee & Cars and the Brass Monkey are cases in point.

Another example of this was the Taupo Hobby Show. Whilst we didn’t run it we participated as we have done in the past. A great turn out from members who assisted with the rostered duties and many thanks to those who allowed their precious vehicles to be put on display. A lot of attention to the “American Vehicle” display with flags and banners being provided by those who displayed their vehicles. I am told some good interest from visitors about what our club does and how to qualify as a member with information brochures taken to follow up.

A few discussions on how to exceed this interest next year with ideas about possibly doing Japanese or even Motorbikes.

The National VCC AGM and Delegates Meeting is coming up in August and I will be attending on behalf of the branch. If any of you have questions that you would like some clarification on just let me know and I will raise them.

Our next big day is Daffodil Day and more on this and its format will be published later in this issue.

A big welcome to the club to Harry & Karen van Vliet and John Buchanan. All have been very active since joining. One of Harry & Karens cars was on display at the hobby show. Johns is below. One very cool Jeep.

ANNUAL TAUPO HOBBY SHOW

As mentioned above a great turnout for the annual Model Railway Enthusiasts Hobby Show.

Our theme this year was American Vehicles and went down well with the public. Eddie Hawkes’ Oldsmobile , Ivan Hawkless’ “63 Corvette, Danny Jones’ 55 Chev Pickup, John Gribbles’ Ex Army Ford Truck and Harry & Karen van Vliets 26 T Coupe were our club cars on display. These vehicles attracted a great deal of interest with lots of questions about club eligibility from the public.

If you have never been to a hobby show it is well worth it. The standard of model train displays is very high. From large layouts to one that fitted in a suitcase with scenery and a working train.

Ulysses Motorcycle club had a display as did model r/c vehicles. These are very well put together and the presentation and paint work is outstanding. Lots of sellers with some model cars builders on display as well.

Monthly Breakfast.

Once again a great turnout for our monthly breakfast at Lacus Café’

Mother nature put on a great display with the mountains in postcard mode and the lake like glass. What she didn’t do was put the heater on. Acacia Bay to Wharewaka driven in minus 1 degrees. Still didn’t stop Rob Sacklan wearing his shorts. Yeah I know he just lives across the road but its still a 15 minute walk. Tough bugger?? Or silly bugger. You decide.

A good turnout of 7 classics and 28 members (some in their moderns) kept this event a club favourite.

Good to see our new members there with Harrys’ car well inspected by a delegation of older members as seen below.

TURANGI RSA PETROLHEADS BREAKFAST

A new event on the car scene calender this inaugural event went off gangbusters. A total of 5 cars left in convoy from Drop Zone carpark at 8am. While we were gathering the lovely lady from Lacus Café’ came out to see if she had missed our booking. She recognised us and was going to quickly reorganise the café to suit. After explaining to her what was going on a couple of roady coffees were bought and we were on our way. More members joined us later so a good turnout from our club.

Over 30 cars in attendance with the RSA being a little bit caught short food wise. A quick trip to the local supermarket sorted that out and did not detract from the success of the day. Sarbie, the organiser, is hoping to do this every 3 to 4 months in the middle of the month so watch out for more in the future.

Yes the weather was a bit brisk but rugging up soon fixed that.

Here’s a gift from Heather Duncan. Instigator of the Ladies Day event.

After this week’s ladies’ get-together, a few asked for the cake recipe I got from a former colleague years ago, so here it is. It is a moist cake which keeps well. Enjoy.

PUMPKIN SPICE CAKE

Cream 125 gm butter and 1 ½ cups of sugar until fluffy.

Add 2 eggs – one at a time – beating well after each.

Combine 1 cup cooked pumpkin pulp with 2/3 cup sour milk (add 1 tsp vinegar to ordinary milk).

Sift together:

1 ¾ cups flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking soda

2 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg

½ tsp ginger

Add this to the butter mixture alternatively with the pumpkin mixture.

Bake in a greased large tin (or best done in two tins the same size and put together with mock cream filling)

Bake at 160 degrees celsius for 35 - 45 minutes.

Ice with vanilla butter icing – I often add a tsp of custard powder to the icing to change the flavour.

Note – two cups of raw pumpkin make 1 cup of cooked mashed pumpkin. Freezes well.

WHAT’S NEXT

Daffodil Day Fundraiser 23rd August

The format for this event is as follows;

Club cars need to be at Inghams Ford by 9-30am to be displayed in the front of their yard. This space is being reserved for VCC cars only. Inghams are removing all their vehicles so that we can be front and centre.

We encourage all of you to participate in this event so that we have a large display of our qualifying vehicles. Anyone with classic motorcycles are also encouraged to participate. The more the merrier. Hopefully we may exceed the amount we raised last year. If you have a display sign giving details of your vehicle we encourage you to bring those please. A simple A4 sheet with information on it would be sufficient if you do not have a signwritten one.

Other clubs vehicles will be able to park anywhere but we will need some parking marshalls to help with this. We have extended invitations to Taupo Car Club, The Taupo Rod and Custom Club, Lakers Taupo and the both the Taupo and Kinloch Car Enthusiasts Groups. Feedback I have been given is very positive.

Members will be asked to circulate through the event requesting donations from both the car owners and the public. It is anticipated that highvis jackets will be available to clearly identify collectors. PLEASE wear you club name badges.

At the end of the event at 12 midday those who wish can participate in a short run. Entrants will be asked for a $5-00 donation. This is being planned by Neil Dempsey of Inghams Ford and will end at our club rooms for a sausage sizzle and coffees for the participants at no cost. This is being done as a thankyou to those who put their cars on display.
