Chairman’s Report

February 2026

The month kicked off to a very early start with breakfast at Café Lacus. As is the norm, about 30 folk turned up and engaged in much chatter while consuming their breakfast. As usual this is a very convivial event. It is interesting to note that many of those who attend breakfast and/or coffee morning do not normally attend other regular club events. I do understand the reluctance of some to come out at night or go in a longer drive in their club car. It is very pleasing to see these events appeal to the needs of some members.

The first club night of the year took the form of a barbeque with the club providing the protein and members providing a salad or a dessert. As usual there was a delightful array of comestibles. In order to be fed members were first required to participate in a Special General Meeting to vote on a new constitution. This document was passed unanimously after a very brief overview by yours truly. It has now been registered with the Companies Office and we remain a legal entity. Whew !

The bbq was a very pleasant evening and it took some time to encourage the overstayers that they needed to head home. Once again, I am indebted to those who staffed the kitchen preparing food and subsequently doing dishes. All those remaining in the hall owe you a round of applause.

displayed on Tongariro North Domain. Unfortunately, despite all the hard work by Murray Stanley the heavens opened and left a very soggy park which was completely unsuitable for motor cars. Bother ! Better luck next year.

You will be pleased to learn that we have accepted a new regular tenant, the Creative Fibers Club. This group will be placing a small cupboard in the hall to contain their weekly handiwork. This regular income will be helpful.

With regard to club runs, I have been advised by Helen Clark that the Tihoi Tavern is open for light pub meals and a liquor licence is planned for the future. This could well be a pleasant spot for a club run a little later in the year.

Finally, as many of you will be aware, Terri and I recently shifted home after 20 years in the same dwelling. It is amazing how much “stuff” you collect. Charity shops have done well out of us. Following the shift we were advised by Spark that we could not transfer our landline because there was no connection at this house. That was news to us as there are ports for phone connections in almost every room.

The outcome was that we decided to forgo the landline and rely on mobile service. My number 027 824 6320 will provide me with a connection to the outside world.

It may also come in useful in the near future when we head off on 11 th March to Vero International Car Rally in Nelson where there are 700+ cars registered for the event. There are a number of our branch members attending and we all look forward to an interesting week of motoring. In due course I will peck out a report on this event. Take care out there

Another great turnout. Something about Coffee and scones that bring people out. Some new faces which is great to see. Next month Barry will be at the Vero Rally in Nelson but he has still organised the event.

CLUB BBQ

Welcome to the New Year

Once again the temptation of food and an early start saw a great turmout from members for our beginning of the year BBQ. This was aligned to a special meeting to adopt the new Club Constitution as required by the Incorporated Societies Association. A quick unanimous vote and we are now all legal to continue our quest to restore and promote historic motoring. With the club providing the protein by way of Snags and Crumbed fish fillets a magnificent array of salads and desserts made sure we were all well feed. Many thanks to Tony Mannington, Rob Sachlan, Elaine Taylor, Maureen Ransley and Pam Mannington for playing cooks on the night and all the other helpers who setup the tables, plated the food and helped tidy up afterwards. A great effort for a great evening.

CLUB OPEN DAY

Unfortunately due to Mother Nature not playing the game our open day was cancelled. Although some will say it fined up, which it did, but the grounds would not have been friendly to a group of cars driving over it. Something we have to be aware of with council.

The big shame is that Murray & Barbara Stanley didn’t get to show off their Bangers to Bluff masterpiece or fill us in on what its about;

The Bangers to Bluff ® Rally is an annual charity event organised by the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay (Inc).It’s a fun road trip from Auckland to Bluff with a bunch of likeminded adventurers, driving down some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and lesser-known routes.

The object ; to buy a car for under $2000-00 then drive it from Music Point in Auckland over a pre determined route to Bluff. Fundraising is done before the event with entrants having to raise $1000 to compete which is payable 1 month before the start. Additional fundraising is obviously encouraged. The entry fee, payable by the participants is $1250. Entrance is limited to 16 vehicles. Once completed the vehicle is sold at auction and all proceeds going to the charities involved. This years major charity is Multiple Sclerosis NZ. Unfortunately this years event overlaps the Vero National Rally with it starting on March 16th to March 28th.

Vero National Rally Nelson 15th to 21st March

Six cars and twelve members are attending this rally. Total numbers are at least 800 cars and 1300 people with many from overseas. Wishing all our participating members a trouble free run and lots of fun.

NB ; As Lynette and I will be on the Vero rally and staying in the South Island until April the 11th I will not be publishing a Taupo Torque at the end of March. If anyone attends an event or would like to send me some photos and a bit of an article I will get a magazine out soon after I get back.

Chelsea Rivet

 The Chelsea Rivet is a 2286mm-long, single-seat off-roader weighing 230kg.

 Power comes from a 125cc petrol engine producing 7hp, around 5kW.

 It features a steel ladder-frame chassis, disc brakes and 17-inch tyres.

At just 2286mm long, the Rivet is about the size of a large bicycle with ambition. Its styling sits somewhere between a pre-war roadster and a miniature farm runabout. Wire wheels wear 17-inch tyres, and generous ground clearance gives it a purposeful stance.

There’s no roof, no doors and no windscreen. The lone seat is fully exposed to the elements, and the cabin is pared back to basics: a trio of spokes on the steering wheel, two gauges ahead of the driver and a handful of switches for the LED lighting. Even the gear lever sits outside the tub, reinforcing the stripped-back theme.

Underneath is a steel ladder-frame chassis keeping weight down to just 230kg. Power comes from a 125cc petrol engine (likely motorcycle-derived) producing 7hp (approximately 5kW). That may sound modest, but with so little mass to move, the Rivet claims a top speed of 60km/h.

Drive is managed through a semi-automatic gearbox offering three forward ratios plus reverse. Disc brakes are fitted at each corner, while chunky tyres aim to provide traction on loose surfaces.

Chelsea describes the Rivet as “quick enough to feel thrilling without ever becoming intimidating”. On paper, the performance envelope suggests fun rather than fear.

The Rivet is available to order in the UK at £4,000 (about NZ$9000) before taxes. Reports indicate it may be sourced from another manufacturer, with Chelsea Truck Company acting as importer. A US retailer lists what appears to be the same vehicle at US$4,499.95 (NZ$7400).

Whether it’s destined for paddocks, private estates or novelty status remains to be seen. Either way, it proves that off-road entertainment doesn’t always require towering tyres or triple-digit kilowatt figures, sometimes, less really is more.

An Impromptu outing among the flowers

Once again at the last minute, after many friends telling us about it, Lynette and I decided to go see the Rehua Sunflower garden at Reporoa. A quick email to members saw 10 cars and 18 people meet at the club rooms for a run out to the orchard. Super simple and we were offered our own parking spot to show off the cars, by the owners of the orchard. As we found out this was the last weekend they were open as the flowers had passed their best and were due to be ploughed under in the near future. I’m no botanist and never knew there were so many different colours to sunflowers. From the obvious yellow to those tinged with orange and red hues making for a magnificent display. Pick your own at $3-00 a head, have a coffee, cold drink or a real fruit icecream to quench your hunger.

A quick visit to Paul Registers just down the road after our visit concluded. It was good to see the progress he has made on his MG restoration. Paint done in a beautiful blue, engine in and now for the wiring nightmare. Always fun when putting a car back together. This car will be outstanding when finished.

My ute was covered in tar spots after a trip away. I tried tar removal stuff, turps and over an hour and no joy.

I aways have spray cans in the garage of degreaser. It is great for oil stains on drives. On squirt with degreaser on the tar and wipe it off. Way cheaper than the stuff you buy for the job.

Also a bit dearer but for stains on carpet or clothing brake pad cleaner. ( does not rot the fabric or change its colour. Can also use the degreaser but not as good.)
