Rumour

Southland Vintage Car Club

Hey everyone,

31st July

It’s been a busy month for the Branch Committee (Exec) with loads of planning going on for four different events!

First off, we had an awesome turnout to celebrate with Roy & his family on hitting the milestone of 60 years with the club. Big congrats to Roy!

The Mid-Winter dinner is this Sunday, July 27th, and it looks like it’s going to be a great afternoon with 50+ people signed up. There will be a donation box for the Food Bank, so if you can, please bring along some non-perishable items to donate to this great cause.

The National AGM planning is also coming along nicely, and it's all happening at the Ascot Hotel (7-10 August). Big thanks to the subcommittee for their hard work on this!

Next up, we’ve got the Rally for Cancer on Sunday, August 24th. It's being run in partnership with Macaulay Ford, who are really backing the event. Let’s make sure we do the same as a branch. Would love to see some club cars there! And don’t forget to bring a packet of biscuits if you’re attending.

Also, a heads-up that our monthly meeting will be the last chance to get your Ballot Papers in before we send them off the next day.

Lastly, we're working on updating our branch's constitution, and there’s more info on that to come soon.

Stay warm!

Cheers, Tony

You will have received your Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Incorporated - BALLOT PAPER 2025 in the post. Please vote. Do you want to be a Radio Reporter?

We have had an interesting request from Bayley McKeown, Station Coordinator at Radio Southland – your community access radio station,. They would love to invite a member or team from the Southland Vintage Car Club to host a weekly or fortnightly radio show all about classic cars, motoring history, and the club’s fantastic activities. No radio experience is needed they will provide full training and support. Whether it’s one host or a rotating group, we’ll help you make it easy and fun. We think this would be a brilliant way to share your passion, attract new members, and keep vintage car culture thriving in Southland. Bayley McKeown 2/35 Dee Street, PO Box 1 Invercargill. This years event is a simplified version of last years successful event. The organisers have adopted the unusual approach of a points based rally. Entrants will be sent a list of interesting destinations (with directions) including the points for each destination. Entrants will choose their destinations, the number of points they want to accrue and work out their route, prior to the event. The questions for these destinations will be in the rally pack handed out on the Saturday morning. Points will also be given to those who go in the procession, however points can be regained by visiting more or further afield places of interest on the list. Veterans, Vintages and slower cars will be catered for as well as longer routes for more modern cars.

Allan’s grandchildren reading his Eulogy)

A memorial service, for Allan George Black, was held at the clubrooms, attended by over 130 mourners,. Allan was born in 1933 with the family eventually moving to Invercargill in the 1940s. Allan became an apprentice metal worker developing the skills he was so widely admired for. Allan joined the Southland branch in 1975; he recently qualified for his 50year badge.

Allan became a stalwart of the branch, undertaking his own restorations and helping a number of branch members restorations with his metal working skills. Allan undertook major restoration work on the mudguards and bonnet of the clubs Darracq. Louisa and the family became involved in the branch, Louisa became involved with the kitchen, and, until relatively recently, managed the kitchen activities. The couple also organised the “Wednesday Runs” .

Allan was a quiet thoughtful man, who was highly respected for his skilled work. In recent years Allan had a series of medical problems that Louisa nursed him through. Saturday evening at the clubrooms will not be the same without Allan - rest in peace old friend.

Roy Shanks -60-year membership award

Roy and Jan Shanks

Roy Shanks, accompanied by Jan and his family, was presented with his 60-years membership. This was followed by a celebration afternoon tea. Over 60 members attended the event.

Roy spent years restoring a model T Ford taking it on a number of runs when it was finished

Roy is our very passionate librarian and due to his dedication, we have an outstanding collection of catalogued books and magazines.

Roy was club treasurer for some time, only stepping down when the computerisation of records and returns became compulsory.

Roy's quiet and studious approach lends confidence to all the work he does for the branch.
