The Nelson Cancer Society is stoked with the contribution we have made to their funds. For those of you who were at the Biscuit Munchers on the 19th of August. Our guests from the Stoke Tahunanui Men’s Group made the comment several times how busy our branch is with so many members attending a morning tea. It would seem we are one of only a few groups they have visited to have such a large and active membership. When it comes time to consider proposed increases in our membership fees, it could be well worth also considering that many community organisations do not have the camaraderie and associations we enjoy. It was certainly observed by our guests. Chairman Report This last month has been a bit full on starting with our club mid-winter Xmas dinner, followed by the National AGM and the VCC of NZ National Day which was once again held to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Wow what a fabulous mid-winter Xmas dinner. On arrival we were greeted with mulled wine and canapes. Even though I had managed to be sitting at the final table to be called to the buffet. It was last but certainly not least. The incredible spread put on by our in-house Chef John and his assistant Lesley was something that had to be seen to be believed. Thank you so much. John’s wish for a new fan bake oven has been granted. I had the privilege of attending the National AGM this year held in Palmerston North as Nelson’s delegate. It was the first AGM held since the new constitution. The main points discussed were the imminent rise in the national subscription. Details of these will be sent out to our branch members for discussion. There will be time made available to discuss this at our next two morning teas or if you want to contact me please do so. On a more cheerful note an Honorary Life Membership Award was presented to a very surprised and emotional Kevin Clarkson. For me I was very pleased to be there to witness this well-deserved award. Congratulations Kevin. The Presidential Award was this year given to Kaaren Smylie for her outstanding efforts with the Club National Daffodil Day. The total donated to date now exceeds $500,000. This event has grown each year. Well done Kaaren. 7

The delegate representation has now been divided into six different regions through-out the country. Nelson is included in The Upper South Island group along with Marlborough, West Coast, Banks Peninsula and Canterbury. This group will be led by Andy Fox. Lines of communication have now been established, and we will have either zoom or email contact. The Upper South Island group has the largest number of VCC members nationally. Locally our Daffodil day or should I say weeks once again turned out to be a great success with many of our members pitching in various ways. Obtaining raffle prizes, raffle ticket selling, set up and down on our main day and several other behind scene activities all contributed to making this event the wonderful outcome it was for the Nelson Branch. The effort the raffle ticket sellers made with their very colourful yellow attire and displays meant everyone knew what they were there for, hence all tickets sold out. A huge thank you to Dianne Lewis and her team of merry helpers. Cheers

Run to ngatimoti School Festival We had an amazing response from the Ngatimoti School during the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring and would like to help them out with their festival. The plan is for those wishing to display their vehicles to be on site at Ngatimoti School by 8.30am on Sunday 25th Oct so we are in place before the big crowds turn up Don’t forget to pack your deck chairs 9

Marlborough/Nelson Trial 2026 Prize Giving Thank you all for coming. Special thanks to David Stuart for bringing his Argo all the way from Nelson the help us get out the trouble we got ourselves into. Thanks to all the helpers, including the marshals, barbecue cooks, and guys who helped set out the course in adverse conditions. And thanks to all the entrants, for being so willing to help out, making the organisers job so much more enjoyable. Club Captains Report Spring has arrived, the days are warming up and lengthening making getting the old cars out more likely Daffodil Show & Shine Day is behind us for another year with outstanding results. All raffle tickets were sold with over $8000 coming in from sales and donations then add on gate sales and other donations from the day, we have over $12,000. We should have the final figure in another week or so but it is a phenomenal effort by our club. Thank You one and All.

AUGUST Wed 19 Morning tea, Mystery vehicle. We had a visit this morning from the Mens group from Tahuna/Stoke with the extra 14 bringing our numbers up to 76 this morning. Thank You to Lesley, Jill, Carolyn and Karen for keeping everyone fed and watered. Ray gave a brief informative history of our club and how we came to be where we are based now. Then we moved outside to our mystery vehicle, where no one guessed what was under the covers. Dick Anderson brought in another beauty, this time his Ariba caravan. Dick travelled around the UK & Europe with his Ariba then filled it with parts for a fiat Topalino among other things when he brought the caravan back to NZ. Thank You, Dick, as always this was another treasure. Check out our club website to see the unveiling of this Ariba caravan filmed for us by Wes Dayton and many other mystery vehicles we have had in the past. 13

Saturday 22 Set up for Daffodil day The forecast didn’t look great, but it was decided to set up anyway. With a good turnout the set up for the 23rd was accomplished followed with lunch put on by John Appleman and Lesley Barker. Sunday 23 Daffodil day Show & Shine The weather played ball after a blustery wet night, the cars came (over 350 through the gate) the bands entertained and with all the work put in with raffle and gate sales, the day was a huge success thanks to teamwork from you all. We had around 50 to morning tea today. Again, we were spoilt with a birthday shout, this time from Jill Holmwood. Thank you, Jill, the carrot cake had carrots in it and was delicious. Thank you to everyone who poured the tea and served the food and came along for another good social morning. Carolyn and John Bolland organised the mystery lunch and 16 of us made it to the Tahuna beach camp café. Thank you both for doing these lunches, you have certainly found some great places to go to.

BITS & PIECES COMING UP SUN 6 Classic & Collectable Car Show, Higgins Park. This is put on by the Rover club from 10am to 2pm. Let’s have a good turnout here. Meet up at the grounds on the day. THU 10 Club Night, Movie Night Robs Choice of movie, this will be a fun one to see. 7pm & please bring a plate 14

WED 16 Morning Tea, Mystery Car SAT 26 Club Run to Richmond RDA, 9.30 Clubrooms Please spread the word, it would be great to have as many cars, trucks, motorbikes, vehicles to display and raise some well needed funds for this worthy group. It is a Koha for all display vehicles, $5 for adults (public) & children free. OCTOBER SAT 3 Murchison Classic Car & M/C show, raising funds for the Westpac rescue helicopter. FRI 16 to SUN 18 is the Marlborough Biennial Rally held this year in Kaikoura SUN 25 Ngatimoti School festival. They want us there at 8.30am parked up ready for the crowds. SAT 31 Speedway Parking from 3 to 8pm. Paul would like 16 people for this night as it is the Speedways fireworks night & generally has a large, keen attendance. Tea is provided for those helping with the parking. Happy motoring

Lloyd Reid and his Nzeta Scooter

“A passing glimpse into a Shed of timeless passion “ A profile of Steven Scullion - by Mort Have you heard of BEARS (British, European, American Racing Series), a roar, not a growl distinct to this group which can be detected long before they come into sight, a sound that goes deep into you and remains for a lifetime. Can you imagine being clocked at 166 M.P.H. (yep that’s right, 267 kilometres per hour for you youngsters) you’d need a serious bit of kit and a fairly large pair to pull that off. We called in on a fella the other day who managed that at a speed event on the Foxton straight and by all accounts also won the 1988/89 BEARS & NZACU road racing championship on the same machine. He has mixed emotions of his time attached to his brand-new Ducati Super Sport 851 which he modified using a factory supplied upgrade race kit, along with a rear swing arm tickled by his own hand that allowed him to conquer these challenges. Let’s backup a bit, as a youngster in the Hutt Valley two-wheel machines became his obsession, upon leaving that institution where he yearned for the bell to ring our host went onto the Petone Tec collage gaining an apprenticeship at Hutt Yamaha which set him on a path followed with passion and persistence. British Motorcycles Spares become a place of fun and fulfilment, serving on the counter building relationships with customers holding similar ideals. The 1980’s as we all know was a time of experimentation, leather, moustaches and a need for speed. Building, tuning and competing on a variety of bikes chasing the chequered flag, along with taking a few snaps of the fellas while waiting his turn, saw him fit in as just one of the lads.

In the early 80’s a 1964 Ariel 250 was stripped down, modified and campaigned at many events with some success, a testament to the kiwi trial and error method which pushed his fellow competitors to rethink the adjustments to their own machines and riding styles. pic from Andrew Lawrence, Pukekohe club circuit around 1983.

As with all good riders pushing the limits is part of a day in the saddle, an example, the Flower Garden street race in Wanganui, let’s just say there wasn’t a lot of the hay bale left for feeding out at the end of the day and the heart got a good work out as did his helmet, lucky the moustache didn’t get singed. Along with completing more than a couple of lap on most of the race circuits, a Ducati S2 1000 was entered in the BEARS class of the 1987 Castrol 6 hour at Manfield, riding with a good mate Kerry T. As mentioned earlier a Ducati 851 had its claws sharped for the 1988/89 season. Reluctant to maintain the vast and varied demands of super bike racing, participation was scaled back, as life rolled on the tinkering continued enjoying a BSA Gold Star at Pukekohe in 2007. 2008 saw a chance to move to the fair city of Nelson joining the team restoring some very rare motorcycles while creating fond memories with the other jokers, Alastair and the 2 Murrays 20

warming up the Collingwood street workshop. The shop hack was handy for picking up parts & when it came to smoko time enticing the ladies from IRD to go for a spin through town in the sidecar rig, one encounter resulting in a very touching year spent in Holland.Touring the countries roads at a more sedate rate now days allows an appreciation of the scenery, however that rush experienced from opening the throttle wide still remains and a 1937 Rudge Ulster 500 at Oreti beach racing championship, Invercargill in 2013 provided the fix

Restoring bikes for others has continued albeit at a more leisurely pace. Catching up with the blokes at the coffee shop a welcome break to the week in the shed, which by the way has not only an impressive line-up of Yamaha RD250’s from the 1970’s but also some very special projects keeping warm patiently waiting some harder to find parts and that all important commodity, time.

Taking pride of place; a 1964 Ariel Arrow Sports, twin cylinder 247cc two stroke, 4 speed manual gearboxe, purchased in 1983, with restoration completed by Steven Scullion in 2025 and he reckons it goes quite well.

Membership We welcome a new member to the club: John Blick of Stoke - John is well known in the motorcycling fraternity and owns a 1946 Triumph Speed twin motorcycle.

Wanted I owe my GP big time for his awesome care and consideration during my life-threatening illness in 2020 and the amazing extensive follow up in the ensuring years. His daughter is getting married on 2nd January 2027 and he is looking for 4 cars for her wedding day. We will be taking them from the service at Fairfield House to Tahuna Beach for pics then the Boat house for their wedding breakfast.
