Well,anotherAGMbeenandgone.It wasverypleasingtoseesomany membersattend.Afteraquitecouple ofyears,Iamhonoredtoleadour incomingcommitteeandappointees forthisnextyear.
Iwishtothanklastyear’scommitteeandother membersforthevastamountofworkinvolvedinthe organizationofmanyeventsandday-to-dayrunningof ourclubduringsuchabusyperiodintheclub’shistory. TheVeroRallycertainlyputtheVCCNelsonbranchout thereinthemotoringenthusiast’scommunity.Welldone toallinvolved.Nelsonisreallyproudofyou.

On Wednesday19th August the committeehasinvitedaMen’sGroup fromTahunanui/Stokeareatojoinus formorningTea.(Possibly12orso people)
Thegroupareinterestedinlearning whattheclubisaboutandmeeting someofourmembers.
ItisanopportunitytofurtherourClub awarenesswiththepublic,somethingwe achievedverywellduringtheVeroRally

Our1stIrishmans byDianneLewis
Lastyearwehadtheopportunitytobuyacomplyingcar,a1930 ModelA,sowecoulddotheIrishman’sRallyatlonglast.One thingonour‘Bucketlist’.
Wedidarekkiewiththecartheweekbeforetoironoutany issuesbygoingoverthehilltotheModelAlunchinHavelockand givingheragoodtrialrun.
Luckilywedidcositgaveusafewdaystofixacoupleofissues. Wediscoveredwehadproblemswithherboilinggoingupthe hillssoafteraninvestigation,flushingouttheradiator,wedecided wemayneedtoreplacetheheadgasket.
Wealsodiscoveredacoupleoftinycracksintheheadsoafter puttingin6-7plugs tofixitplusanew headgasketwe wereonourway southwithheron thetrailer.
Wehadagoodtrip downarrivingin Fairlieonthe Fridayafternoonto registeratthe Kimblepub.
Idon’toftenseethesunrisethesedayssoitwasnicetosee somebeautifulcoloursinthesky…asyougetdownsouth. Itwasabeautifulclearmorningbutasweheadedforthehills weranintofog
Itwasacoupleofhoursbeforeitfinally burntoffbutasweweredrivingthe roadsIlookedrightandahorsewas trottingandgallopingbesideus.I thoughtitwasinthepaddockbutthen whenitpassedusweallrealisedithad gotoutofitspaddockspookedandran besideourcarsforabout2-3km beforeitranoutofpuffandabrave ladygotoutandcalmeditdown.
ThatwasthetimeIrealisedourcar wasn’teven1horsepower!
Wedroveonsomeprettypicturesque roadsduringtheday,gotaflattyre whenthevalvesomehowcameout.Acoupleofcarsstoppedand gaveusahandtochangeitthenwhen wegottoourlunchstopatBushTowninWaimate, KevinMercerandafriendwereabletoputoursparetubeintothe tyresowecouldfeelsafetocarryonontheroughroadsand fordssettoprintfortheafternoon.
WeheadedbackinlandandupoverElephantHillandtothe WaitakiValleythemmotoreduptheValleyandturned intotheHakatarameaValley.Itwasabeautifuldrivethrough severalfordstakingacoupleofhoursasthesunset
Thiswaswhenwerealisedourgeneratorwasn’tchargingour batterysoaswecameoutontothemainroadbacktoFairlie
wehadnoheadlightssoitwasoutwithourtorchandIheld intoontothewindscreensowecouldseeourwayback.
Goodnessknowswhatthecarscomingtowardsusthought cosinthedistanceweprobablylookedlikeamotorbike orcyclecomingtowardsthem.

WehadtogetDaveandYvonneBell,theonlyotherentrantsfrom Nelson,togiveusatowtogetusgoing.Fromthenonweeither hadtokeepthecargoingormakesurewewereparkedonarise sowecouldcrashstartiteachtime.
YvonneandDavecamewithusontheSundayasYvonne’scar brokedownonSpoonerssotheycamedownintheirUte.
WetravelledthroughVerdantDownsstation,toldtofollowthe arrows,don’tgothroughanyclosedgatesbutitwasn’tlong beforeweallgottotallylostandbecausethe1stcarsmade wrongturns…noneofuscouldfindthearrowsweweresupposed tofollow.Wemust’velookedfunnygoingallovertheplace throughmany(wrong)opengatestiltheonlywaytogetusoutof thepropertywasforthefarmertocutsomewiresinhisfenceto letusallout!
Thismeantwehadtomissthenext farmwhichwasashamecosthe familywerelookingforwardto seeingallthecarsgothrough.
WethenwentontoWaratahStationwithitssteephillsand descentswhichgaveourbrakesagoodworkout.Wealso suddenlystoppedinthemiddleofariversohadtonotonlyget towedoutbuttowedalongtogetstartedagain. Thiswaswherewestoppedin theyardsofthestationforlunch andtolookthroughthemuseum theyhavethereintheoldwool shearingshedcirca1870. Fromherewewentdown LimestoneValleyRoadandback toFairliefortheprizegivingand socialising.
Eventhowehadafew hiccupswiththecarwereally enjoyed drivingallthebackcountryroadsforthe2days.
Itcanbeatoughrallyforthecars,manyroughroads,fords, hillstoclimbanddecendbutwethoroughlyenjoyeditandmet somereallynice,downtoearthpeople.TypicalSouthCanterbury/ McKenziecountryhospitalityandfun.
