As Geoff Morris amplified on Wednesday the club is in good heart. Looking forward to a great result for Daffy Day Show an Shine, and certainly the ladies have been hard at work pumping the raffle tickets out to the community, doing a fabulous job. Just a reminder that Next Wednesday morning tea we will have as guests approx. a dozen members of the Tahunanui Stoke men’s group ((originally Probus Club) coming to check out what we do – so bring your cars along – who know we might drag a few more into our membership

Chairman Report A quiet start to last month but things start to ramp up with Mid-Winter Xmas, National AGM and Daffodil Day ahead of us. As you are reading this latest newsletter, please give a lot of thought to Ray who puts in hours of work to publish this for us in such a fantastic format. He has been struggling with the new program to get in the presentation we are all used to. Our new secretary Gloria has also had a gremlin with the club laptop recognizing her Wi-Fi connection which she has now had sorted. Thank you both so much for your efforts. This year’s “No Show” snow run was well attended with approximately 75 people from The Coast, Marlborough and Nelson branches. Following lunch, a lot of fun was had by those playing a series of games thoughtfully put together by our Club Captain Maureen and organized on the day by Dianne Lewis. And the winner was the Nelson Team. Well done. Nelson branch finished the lovely day off by meeting up at the Flat Rock Café at Kohatu. . Daffodil Day is almost upon us please make all your family and friends aware of this. Billboards are now in place around the Nelson district. Lots of Facebook posts on many sites and encouraging comments for this special day. Once again there will be raffle tickets for sale with some excellent prizes. Buy your tickets to be in to win. Recently John Barker and I travelled to Motueka where I had the privilege to present Les Pearson with his 50-year badge and certificate at Mrs Smith Café Riwaka. It was wonderful to have a catch up with Les. I will be attending the National VCC AGM in Palmerston North on the weekend of 14, 15 and 16 August as our chairman and branch delegate. Notice of Visit to the Club

On Wednesday 19th August the committee has invited a Men’s Group from Tahunanui / Stoke area to join us for morning Tea. (Possibly 12 or so people) The group are interested in learning what the club is about and meeting some of our members. It is an opportunity to further our Club awareness with the public, something we achieved very well during the Vero Rally So, bring your vehicles along and show them off – who knows we may pick up a couple of new members. Autofocus – has changed hands After 5 years Jared Dacombe sold his business, handing the reins over to new owners Jordon and Holly MacGillivray. He wishes to thank you all sincerely for your trust, support and loyalty throughout his Autofocus journey. Some of you may have met Jordon, who has for the past 10 years enjoyed the experience of working in a number of high-profile businesses around Nelson. Some of you will remember Jordon and his mates turning up to a VCC run in his first classic car a beautiful little Triumph Herald Convertible which he still owns. Secondary Station Headquarters Located under three properties, one of which is owned by club member Graham Birch The old underground bunker on the hillside of Arapiki Road in Stoke, Nelson, was built in 1942 during World War II. It served as a military "Secondary Station Headquarters" designed as a hidden emergency operations shelter and part of New Zealand's last line of wartime defense Graham took the time to show Rob Thompson and Ray Robertson around the bunker. Consisting of two large underground rooms joined by two entranceways. At rear on bottom photo page 17 a void with built in ladder rises 6m approx. to another room above (currently propped closed) – the entrance corridor below is basically a Z shape perhaps a security feature? Exiting to Robs left and then a right turn back to the entrance

If there is enough interest from branch members to view the bunker Graham is happy to arrange at a later date

Run to Ngatimoti School Festival. WE had an amazing response from the Ngatimoti School during the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring and would like to help them out with their festival. The plan is for those wishing to display their vehicles to be on site at Ngatimoti School by 8.30am on Sunday 25th Oct so we are in place before the big crowds turn up Don’t forget to pack your deck chairs 18

Club Captains Report Here we are into August, and this month is a special one for the Vintage Car Club of NZ as the 23rd is our national day. In conjunction with the Cancer Society & MS Ford we celebrate this day raising as much money as we can for the Cancer Society & this money stays in our region. We are also fortunate to celebrate the day with many of the local car clubs happy to join us & display their pride & joys. They all add to the wonderful atmosphere our Show & Shine Day brings with food carts, live music, the raffle draw & of course amazing vehicles to look at. JULY Wed 1st Morning tea & mystery lunch, Numbers were down a little for morning tea but still close to 50. As always, a huge Thank You to those that ran the kitchen. I also want to Thank Geoff Clarke who steps up with a joke each morning tea that always has us laughing. Carolyn & John Bolland organised the mystery lunch & 18 of us enjoyed a trip to Toad Hall. Good food & good company. When Gordon Dacombe set up our mystery lunches, Toad Hall was the first place we visited. Gordon wanted club eligible vehicles only, but we seemed to have drifted away from this. Have a think about this and let us know your thoughts. Thurs 9 Club night. This was a social night that 15 of us came along to. It was a very relaxed evening with plenty to nibble on. Dianne, Paul & Brent did their best to teach me 500, well it is safe to say I am no threat to anyone. Thank you to those who came out on a cold winters night to socialise. Wed 15 Morning Tea, mystery vehicle We had nearly 60 attend this morning & still spoilt with cake, savouries & biscuits. Thank you to the wonderful team in the kitchen. There had been a mix up with our mystery (not a car but something else that you will see at a later date) but as it happens, Lloyd Reid had something interesting on a trailer that he was taking to town so we quickly threw a cover over it & had a mystery vehicle. This was an NZeta, a 171cc motorbike built in Auckland from 1960 till 1963. you Lloyd for being put on the spot & stepping up to the mark. 22

Sun 26 Club Snow Run to Rotoiti Hall. Unfortunately, Leigh & I didn’t make it to the day, but it sounds like you enjoyed catching up with members from the Marlborough & West Coast branches. John counted 74 of you altogether. Certainly, saw some great photos of the day with perfect weather. Thank you to Dianne & many others for making the day successful. You will have to settle for photos. AUGUST Wed 5 Morning tea, mystery lunch organised by Carolyn & John Bolland. We had 63 attend this morning which kept Lesley, Jill, Dianne, Karen, Rob & Roy on their toes looking after all of us. We were spoilt with savouries this morning with a birthday shout from Geoff Morris, 80 years young. Thank You, Geoff. Dick Andersons also brought in another of his treasures that was as fascinating as always. This little beauty was an electric engine built by Stephen Hutchison in 1860. Dick bought it in Timaru 50 years ago & it still works as shown when he connected it to a 12-volt battery. Brilliant. Stephen Hutchison was the founder of the first gas plant in NZ, Dunedin Gas Works. Thank You, Dick, for sharing this with us. Rover Car Club’s Classic and Collectable Car Show The Rover Car Club, Nelson, will be hosting its annual Classic and Collectable Car Show on Sunday 6th September, at Higgins Heritage Park, Pigeon Valley Road, Wakefield. Gates open at 9.30, and we are really looking forward to seeing the magnificent display of collectable cars that we have enjoyed in previous years and we hope your Club will come to the Show.
