Hi Everyone

The AGM is over and we have filled a few position which were vacant and brought some new blood into the team. We are very grateful to you all for taking on the se positions . Thankyou

Please take the time to get to know these folk - after all they are there to help you .

As you can see on page3,we require somebody to put their hand up to run the swapmeet in 2026 and some one to take over the swapmeet website program. If someone is willing to take on these rolls you have many months to learn the roles.

We would also like someone to step up as a second Asst. Club Captain - once again we have several people on the committee able to bring you on into the role gently.

Kind Regards Ray

From the Chair

It’s just after 7am on a cold, frosty but beautifully clear morning. I’m on the bus heading to work. With Rocks Road closed due to slips, the trip is slow red tail lights as far as the eye can see. A perfect time to relax and write my first report for The Crankcase

Let me introduce myself. I’m Joanne Hoffman, married to Vernon. We live in Richmond and are members of Grace Church. Between us we have six children, three sons-in-law, five grandchildren (with two more due very soon), and two cats.

Our garage is home to my club-eligible car a 1990 Mazda Eunos Roadster (Milly), Vern’s 1928 Model A 5-window coupe (Annabelle), and a partially restored 1951 Morris Minor (Betty). If all goes to plan, Betty will be back on the road by the time you read this.

Vern and I both work full time. A few years ago, I changed careers and completed my Pharmacy Technician qualification while working in a busy Nelson pharmacy. I’m now moving to a role closer to home in Richmond, which will hopefully free up more time. Vern is a Fonterra tanker driver, navigating the highways and byways in his 21-metre Volvo 550. He often finishes the day over the Takaka Hill or sometimes as far south as Culverden. Next time you see a Fonterra tanker on the road, give it a wave it might be Vern!

Enough about us.

Our AGM was held in the break between two storm systems thankfully both now behind us. With any luck, we’ll get some dry weather to help the ground recover. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout on the day.

I’m pleased to welcome two new committee members: Jarod Dacombe and Vernon Hoffman. Mike has taken on the role of Vice Chairman, while John and Lesley Barker continue their excellent work as Secretary and Treasurer. Ray Robertson remains our .

dedicated Crankcase editor. Maureen Joblin has stepped into the role of Club Captain, with Dianne Lewis as her Vice Captain.

The rest of the committee includes Malcolm Baker, who looks after the grounds and mowing; Paul Lewis, responsible for building and maintenance; and Rob Thompson, who will be lending his support to the Club Captains.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes whether it’s painting, cleaning, organising, writing, maintaining the library, managing VICs, or simply showing up to support events. Each of you plays a part in making our club the vibrant community it is.

Just days after the AGM, as another storm approached, we held a special meeting to adopt our new constitution. Thank you to everyone who attended. There was plenty of positive feedback, and we passed a constitution that truly reflects our club. The night ended on a sweet note with dessert!

Looking ahead, we’ll be heading to Invercargill in early August to represent the Nelson Branch at the National AGM. Mike will attend, and Ray will be there too, wearing his Vero hat.

Speaking of Vero it’s coming up fast! This national event is always a highlight on the club calendar, bringing together vintage and classic vehicle enthusiasts from all over the country and further afield. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see some truly special vehicles, meet likeminded people, and proudly represent our branch. If you haven’t already, be sure to get your registration in before 31st August so you don’t miss out.

And just around the corner, we have Daffodil Day! Dianne has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to organise what promises to be a fantastic day. It’s one of our most important events, offering a unique opportunity to showcase our club to the wider public, connect with other car enthusiasts across the region, and most importantly, support the Cancer Society a cause that touches so many. If you're able to lend a hand whether it’s marshalling, parking, setting up, or helping on the day please reach out to Dianne. Many hands make light work, and every bit of help is appreciated!

And don’t forget the Biennial Rally is only a month away! This year’s rally is based in Reefton, and Mike, Rex, and Zoe have put together an exciting weekend. If you're like me and haven’t registered yet don’t wait. Do it today!

That’s all from me for now. I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

Keep those wheels turning, Joanne

Club Captains Report

I hope you have come through the weather bombs we have had recently, rela vely unscathed. We know of Lloyd & Gwens property at Quail Valley being severly damaged & have a clipboard at the clubrooms for names to help with the cleanup. Lloyd contacted Rob Saturday and we can help with the cleanup at long last, this Tuesday 22nd, Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th. If you have hens or been around hens recently, you unfortunately cannot go onto the property. If there is anyone else in the club that needs a hand or an ear please let us know.

I want to say a huge hear elt THANK YOU to Rob Thompson our long standing, enthusias c club captain extraordinaire who has finally stood down having been in the role for 8 years. Rob has been a great Club Captain with the good of the club at the heart of everything he does. These are huge boots to fill but Dianne & I will do our best.

Some of the ac vi es from July and for August. Remember we try and have the calendar as up to date as we can, but events, dates or venues can change

We also need Seven cars and volunteers to help deliver Daffodil Flowers for the Nelson Cancer Society on August 26 1pm onwards depar ng from 102 Hardy Street.

Wednesday 3 Morning Tea & Mystery Lunch

Kind regards Maureen Joblin

Rays Visit to North Shore Branch - I could not let the opportunity go by without showing you “how the other half lives” - I enjoyed a very hospitable morning tea followed by tour of what is an amazing facility they have created. Parts sheds, Tractor shed, Members car storage, upholstery unit, electrical workshop, machine shop , body shop ,engine bay, Hoist bay, 7 club cars for the use of members , some in restoration stage .

Not to mention the Clubrooms sitting central to the property with a large grassed area in front of the clubrooms for display days.

Wednesday mornings sees members working on their own vehicles with Thursday morning at least on the day I was there, approximately thirty guys were working on four club cars, in the parts shed or painting on the Clubrooms - in other words a day for the club.

The club owned vehicles are : Dennis Bus, 35’ Chev Fire engine, Bedford breakdown Truck,39’Chevrolet Taxi,35’ BSA Van, 37’ Lanchester, & a 36’ Morris Eight

Membership

Sadly we offer our deepest sympathies to Phil, Bridgitte & Marion and their families on the passing of their father, Denis Le Cren who passed away on the 26 June 2025 at the age of 91 years.

Denis joined the VCC of NZ in 1965 and played a huge part in recording the history of the branch, in particular the “First 50 years”. He was also the Branch editor for many years ably assisted my his wife Helen.

On my account I had fond memories of Denis as he was one of two members who nominated me for members ship back in 1973 - a time when nomination was a very serious affair. Ed.

Passing of Ken Morris

Diane, Matthew, Simon and family would like to thank and acknowledge the large gathering of the Vintage Car Club who attended the memorial service for our beloved Ken. Especially Rob Thompson on his role as MC.

The Quilting & Beyond Group for supplying & serving our delicious afternoon tea.

Your ongoing support is very much appreciated

Kind regards, Diane. Matthew, Simon Morris

We welcome new member to the Branch - Wesley (Wes) Richards - Wes lives in the Aniseed Valley and owns a 1945 Willys Jeep - Wes and partner Lauren and kids have already entered the Vero International Rally and are really looking forward to it.

We also welcome Graham Humm - Riwaka, who has transferred to Nelson from the Canterbury Branch - Graham has a rather unusual vehicle which will be disclosed at a later Wednesday morning tea Mystery Car.
