Itreallyfeelslikespringisherewiththebeautifuldaysofsun shine.
ItwasreallygreattoseealargenumberofcarsturnuptoJohn CallesonontheSundayRun.Idecidedtogohomebetween seeingJohn’scarsandgoingtoDerek’splace.AsIwasdriving alongKarereRoadasheepappearedonthesideoftheroadand decidedtorunacrosstheinfrontofmycar.Ibrakedhardand withthesheepflyingthrutheairanditlandedinthedrainover thesideoftheroad.Sheepwasdeadandsowasmycar.Thendealingwiththeinsurance company.

OnThursdayIflewtoInvercargillasbranchDelegatetotheAGMandExecutivemeeting. ThankyoutoallthemembersthattookthetimetovotefortheConstitution.So,IamsorryI havenotdonethefullreportfortheTourerbutitwillbeinthenextmonth’sTourer. WhatabeautifuldayonSundayfortheDaffodilDay.Itwasreallygreattoseealargenumber ofcars,trucksandmotorbikes.Wehad117vehiclesondisplayandagreatthankstothose thathelpedwithparking,marshalling,andfittingeveryoneinthecarparkattheCoach House.Weranarafflewhichwasreallypopularandsoldalotofticketswithalotofproducts andvouchersgiventousforspotprizes-including5giftcardsand20spotprizestogive away.About250peoplecametothecubroomsforafternoontea.Itwasverysuccessfulday raisingover$2100.00whichgoestoourCancerSocietyhereintheManawatu. TherewasagreatturnoutforclubnightinAugust.ThankyoutoDerekforshowingthe videoofthe2025HighlandFling.
ThenextclubnightinSeptemberwillbeheldinDannevirkeforthecombinedteaandquiz night.Itwouldbegoodtoseealotofourmembersgooverandwinthetrophyback.

ThisquarryvisitwaswellsupportedbyVCCmembersandthemembersoftheManawatu VintageMachineryClub.Visitorsweregivenalookaroundthedumptrucks,diggers,and othermachinerywhichisusedtoextractrockfromthequarry.
TheLintonQuarrywasestablishedin1995andiscurrentlyselling230,000tonsofmaterial ayear-being75%metaland25%rock.
Thesiteusesapproximately35,000>40,000litresofdieselamonthandatypicalrock‘blast’ cancostapprox.$7000.00.(asmallerblastwasdemonstratedduringthevisit).

AslegendhasitMrTootallwenttodigapostholeonthefamilyfarmandallofasuddenjust underthesurfacehisshovelhitsomerock.
Itturnsouttherewasafairlylargeamountofitunderhisfeet.
Thecurrentpitisapproximately90metresdeep.Apparentlythebottomofthepitisbelow sealevelandwouldbeagood200metreswideatthetopatleastmakingaveryimpressive sight.
Wewereluckyenoughtohaveasmallrockblastingdemonstrationwithonly$4000worthof explosivesusedatadepthof9and11metres.Thegroundgaveafairlyhealthyheavewhen itwentoffconsideringwewereatarespectablesafedistanceawaybutcloseenoughtoseea onceinalifetimeeventformost.
Therockdrilltheyusetoplacetheexplosivescangotoadepthof30metresthiswasoneof themanyverycoolmachinesonsiteandasyoucanimaginethediggersanddumptrucksare ratherlarge!!
ThelastpartofthevisitconsistedofOwenMudgwaywhoseplacewevisitedafewmonths agodemonstratingthemobilecrushingplantheoperatescrushinglargerocksinto1700tons ofgravelperday.

10. Hasitbeenrestored?/Whorestoredit? Apparently,aKenHarsant,sometimeprior1967gaveitit’sfirstrestoration. DickAndrewsofAucklandpostJuly1983againrestoredorrefurbishedit. Heowneditfor28years.HesolditJan2012.
11. Mileagetravelledsincerestoration. UnknownbuttheonlyrecordIhaveofamileagereadingwithDickAndrewsis 87800in1995,soonly2000milesin29yearsbetween1995andFeb2024when Ipurchasedit.Thecar’sregistrationwasonholdforatleast8yearsbetween 2004and2012whenitwassold. Ihavetravelledover1600milesinitoverthelast18months.

AsforethanolblendslikeE10(10%ethanol,90%gas),you'llbeshockedtohearthat MinnesotaCorn,whosemissionisto"maintainanddevelopmarketsforcornandcorncoproducts,"saysE10willlastatleastsixmonths,andlongerwithgoodstorage.Meanwhile, marketresearchfirmJ.D.Power(youknow,thelongtimeaward-giverandnamemostheard inChevyadsforawhile)saysethanolfuelscanlosecombustibilityinjustonetothree months.
Also,whilemoderncarsaredesignedaroundgasolinehavingacertainethanolcontentinfuel, oldercarswithuntreatedrubberandplasticsealscanapparentlysufferseriousdamage. So,ifyou'restoringgasforyourFordModelAorBugattiRoyale,perhapsusestraightgas withnoadditives.
Howtohoardgas
Shouldyouwanttostockpilegasoline likeadragonkeepsgold,remember thatnomatterwhatyoudo,gaswon't lastforever,butyoucanpreserveits freshnessforasurprisinglylongtime. First,storeitinairtight,fuel-rated plasticcontainerswithasabsolutely littleairinthemaspossible.Then, putthosecontainersinacool,dry place.Don'texposeyourgas containerstoextremeheatorcold, either.Gaslikesastable temperature;otherwiseitwillevaporateandoxidizefaster.

Ifyouareoneofthosepeoplewithavastcarcollection,youcantakethecarsoutforashort spineveryfewweeks.Then,topoffthetankwithfreshgas,whichsimultaneouslyreduces oxygenlevelsinthetanktopreventevaporationandlimitsroomformoisturebuildup. Youcanalsoaddfuelstabilizersthatwillkeepyourgasfromevaporating;thenyoumaybe abletostorefreshgasforuptotwoyears..Still,evenifyoudousestabilizersandstoreyour gasinadehumidifiedcave,alwayscheckyourgasbeforeusingit.You'llknowifyourgashas gonebadifitsmellsstaleorsour,transitionsfromalovelyambercolourtoadarkorange,or thickenslikesyrup,thenit'snogood.Nowordonwhethertheflavourchangesthough!.

AswereflectontheGovernment’sannouncementsof2weeksagoregarding12-monthWoF’s forvehicles40yearsandolder,and12-monthCoF’sforprivatelyownedmotorhomes,I believeitistimelytocommunicateafewkeymessages,concurrentwiththecommentsthatI sharedlastweekendatthenationalAGMoftheVintageCarClubofNZinInvercargill. FrommyroleandperspectiveasyourPresident,Ithinktherearefourkeypointsthat underpinwhathasbeenachieved,anditssignificance.Innospecialsequencetheyare:
1. Thefactthatsomanyclubsrespondedtothecallforsubmissions,andmakingour collectivevoicesheard…..over13,000individualsubmissions(andapproximately97% infavour)wasawonderfuldemonstrationofpeoplepoweracrossoursectors.
2. The2024NZHistoricandClassicVehicleResearchSurveythatquantifiedthescaleand strengthofouroverallsector,includingtheheadlinefigureofour$16.5Billion economicfootprint. Inmyview,thiscredibleandsubstantialpieceofworkhas reinforcedoureffortsandresultsmorethanwehaveprobablyrealised.
3. TheeffortswehaveputintoourrelationshipswithbothNZTAandGovernment Ministers.
4. Ourcollectivepersistence…whilsttheannouncementsofJuly31weretheresultof specificworkoverthepastsix yearsandintensifiedinthelast18months,theactual journeydatesback22years,andtheinitial(andsubstantial)workofVCCidentityRod BrayshawandhisinitialproposalstoNZTAforannualWoF’sin2003! Ihadthe pleasureofmeetingRodattheVCCAGM,andwesharedstoriesandswappednotes!
OverandabovetheJuly31announcements,theFederationwillkeepworkingontwospecific aspectsthatarestillunderreviewandweresignalledintheFederation’scomprehensive submission,namelyalongerWoFperiod(i.e. morethan12months)forthesmallbut importantnumberofveteranvehicles(1919andolder),andspecialtermsandrequirements forhistoricmilitaryandagriculturalvehicles.
WehaveaworkingteamdevelopingthesespecificproposalsinassociationwiththespecificinterestclubsandwewillenergeticallypursuethesematterswithNZTAandtheMinisterin theweeksahead.
