Thescrapmetalbinforlargermetalitems(i.e.tinsandbigger)wheremetalscrapcanbe contributedislocatedoutsidebetweenthetwopartssheds,andthereisabinforsmallscrap metalinplaceinthePartsShed.
Thereis24houraccesstotheoutsidebin(usethegatenearthePartsShedwhichisnot locked).Thebinforsmallscrapmetalisonlyaccessiblewhenthepartsshedisopen. Moneyraisedfromthesaleofscraphelpswiththeongoingmaintenanceoftheclubroomsand partssheds.

Firstly,abigthankyoutoeveryonewhocontributestothe Tourer,whetheritberegularlyoroccasionally,withphotographs, articles,reports,orotheritemsof‘publishableinterest’. Pleasekeepupsendinginthecontributions.Notonlydoesit maketheroleofeditoreasier,butitprovidesawidevarietyof contentforthereaders.
Twoeditorsago,EsmeeRowdenaseditor,endeavouredto includeanarticleononeofourmembersclubcars,motorcycles orrestorationsineachissueoftheTourer.Tohercreditshepublishedwelloverfiftyarticles onmembersvehiclesinhertimeaseditor.

WithalapseofoverfiveyearssinceEsmee’s‘seriesofarticles’thebranchhasseenanumber oflongerstandingmemberschangetheirvintagevehicle,acquireanothervintagevehicle,or undertakearestoration,andhasseenmanynewmembersjointheVCC.
Thebranchhasanextensivevarietyofvintageandclassicvehiclesownedbyitsmembers. Mostareseenonoutingsbutmanymemberswouldliketoknowmoreaboutthem.
Withmanynewvehiclesinthebranchitisprobablyagoodtimetorevivetheinclusionof articlesonmembersvintageandclassicvehiclesintheTourer.
Ifyourvehiclehasnotbeenthesubjectofapreviousarticle,pleaseconsiderwriting somethingupaboutitandforwardingittotheeditorwithaphotographortwo.Ifyoudon’t knowwheretostartorhowtoapproachthematter,thereisapageofprompts(questions) whichtheeditorcouldemailtoyouwhichwillsetyouintherightdirectionforanarticle-or youmightjustchoosetomakenotesundereachpromptandreturnthepagetotheeditorfor writingup.

IthasbeenaverydifferentEasterweatherwise.Wehavehadalot ofstrongwindwithhotdaysandnowrainwithcoolerweather. Thegardenplantsdon’tknowwhattodoasIhavespringbulbsout inflowerandtomatoplantscomingupeverywhereinthegarden.
Ithinkushumansarethesamewithsummerclothesonedayand thenextdayputtingonjerseystokeepwarm.

WehadagoodturnoutofcarsontheSundayrun.Itwasgreatweathertogolookingata greatcollectionoftrucks,enginesandchainsawswithothermachinery.So,thankyouDerek fororganizingtherun.
Abusyweekendofthe25th AprilwiththeHighlandFlingonsoIhopetheweatherisbetter. IwishtothankDerekandhisteamforalltheefforttheyhaveputintothisRally. WiththeyearnearlyfinishedandanotherAGMapproachingfastnextmonthIwishtothank allthecommitteeforalltheirhardworkthispastyear.Wehavehadaverybusyyearwith thelargenationalMotorbikerally,theHighlandFlingandourlocalrallies.Wehavealso starteduptheLadiesFriendshipgroupwhichhasbeengoingwell.

MayisonourdoorstepsothisismylastClubCaptainsRamble.AsI havestatedpreviouslyIamsteppingdownfromallcommitteeroles attheAGM.It’sbeenaveryrewardingandinterestingfouryears andIhavehadthepleasureofsomefantasticpeoplesurrounding mebringingtheManawatuBranchbackfromthebrinkofdisasterto thevibrantclubandmindsetofyesteryearaswechargetowards65 yearsasthesecondoldestbranchintheNorthIsland.

Ifyouhaven’tlookedwehaveanewandinterestingFacebookpagethatisonlyasgoodas thecontentYOUasmembersputontherefortheworldtosee.Thebranchhasroughly180 membersandisonlysuccessfulifthemembersactuallyleavehomeandjoinin.

ThelastSundayJaunttotheMudgwayCaterpillarcollectionwaswellreceivedandthe highlightofvisitwasthestartupofthe21litre400+hptrainmotorlotsofnoiseandsmoke andwiththegroundshakingitwasquiteanexperience!!
GlynhasthePostEraRallyallsortedwithlunchinWanganuiit’sgoingtobeaveryinteresting day.
BythetimeyoureadthistheHighlandFlingwilleitherjustabouthave,orwillhavehappened, with82VintagecarstakingpartfromInvercargilltoWhangareiandonecoupleflyingoutfrom AustraliatoincludetheFlingintheirholiday.
IwillstillbeinvolvedwithVICcardsandorganisingtheannualVeteranRallysoI’mnot disappearingaltogether.
Unfortunatelyoverthepastcoupleofweekswehavesadlyhadtwopastmemberspassing away.FirstlyBruceLeask.Brucewasaveryactivememberofthebranchrunningtheparts shedformanyyearsandalsoattendingralliesalloverthecountryeventhoughhewas wheelchairbound,andinlateryearsaftersellinghiscarshadapassionforgramophone’sand hadaveryimpressivecollection.
CarolineNoarosadlypassedawaylastweek.CarolineandherhusbandPeteragainwerevery activemembersintheirdayrallyingacrossthecountryaswell.Ourthoughtsgoouttoboth theirfamilies.
Thankstoeveryonewhohashelpedandsupportedmeoverthelastfouryearsespeciallymy wifeandfamily.

Competitorseitherat29mphor41mphaveragespeedswhichprovidedplentyoftiming challengesespeciallywithbuiltupareas,metalroads,roadworksonSH3at30kphlimit,and asectionofanomaintenancepotholedcountryroad,thatyoucouldlose2rugbyballsin.
Only10competitorswereearlyatcheckpointstheremainderofuswerelate.One competitorwasupto6.5minuteslateoverall.Thewinnerwaslateby56seconds.

Thistruckwhichispoweredbya CumminsN14enginehasafifteen speedgearboxandhasclockedup atotalof1.2millionmiles.

Weighinginatbetween5 and6tonnestheD397isa V12fromthemid-1950s whichdevelops650HP runningat1300rpm. Bore&Stroke=5.75”x8”. Thisenginewasbuiltasa powerunitandwas originallyfittedtoa locomotiveinAustralia. Itwasfullyrebuiltbefore beingshippedtoNew Zealand.

OVER REFUELLING VEHICLES AT PETROL STATIONS

AnewstudyintheUKhasuncoveredthehiddenrisk motorists facewhenrefuellingtheirvehiclesatpetrol stations. Theresearchfoundthatalarmingtracesof bacteriahavebeendiscoveredonthehandlesoffuel pumpsacrosstheUK.
TheseresultsindicateeverythingfromE.coliand Salmonellatofaecalmattercanbefoundonthe handlesofpetrolpumps.Thestudyfoundthat pumpscontainedthesamebacterialmakeuptypically foundontoiletseats.

Researchersswabbedseveraltestsitesatpetrolstationsinthreemajorcitiestogatherthis data.Theyexamineddieselandunleadedpumpsaswellaspay-at-pumpmonitorsanddoor handlesofpetrolstations.
Alltestedlocationsshowedthepresenceofsickness-causingbugs,includingE.coli, Salmonella,andfaecalmatter.Thesefindingssuggestmotoristsmaybeexposingthemselves toharmfulbacteriawhenfuellingup.Thesecontaminantscouldposehealthriskstocertain individuals.
Inonecity,Pseudomonasaeruginosawasfoundatanelevatedcountof1720CFU."Even whencomparedtoacleantoiletseat,thelevelsusuallysitbelow100CFU/cm2." Thisbacteriacancauseskininfections,respiratoryissues,andinfectionsin immunocompromisedindividuals."Accordingtoexperts,theidealCFUcountshouldbe undetectableorbelow100CFUonsurfaces.
Meanwhile, inanothercity, petrolpumpswerefoundtocontainE-coliandClostridium perfringens.TheyalsotestedpositiveforFaecalstreptococci,indicatingthepresenceof humanfaecalmatteronthepumps.
