Looksasthoughsummerhasfinallycome.Itissonicetohave greatweatherforthosethataredownatNelsonfortheVero Rally.

WithagreatthankstoDennisandJudyMilneforhostinguson thelastSundayRun.

ItwasagreatrunthatHarryhaddoneforustogettotheirhome andbacktoclubrooms.ItwasgreattoseeDennis’scarsand alsotohearwhattheyhavebeenupto.Wehadalovely afternoonteawhichwasputonbyJudyandherfamily.

WehadtheRuahineRallyonthe8th March.Theweatherplayedballandwemanagedto havelunchinfineweather.Abigthankyoutothemembersfromotherbranchesthatcame andjoinedusontheday.AgreatthankyoutoStewartBirdwhosettherally.The instructionswereveryclearandtookusovergreatcountryroadswithawesomescenery.

ThankyoutoGlynforbringinginhisMorriscarcalledMavisMorrietoClubNight.Thankyou fortheinformationonthecarandthephotosthatyoubroughtalong.Itwasinterestingto hearaboutallthathashappeningtothecar.Weonlyhadaverysmallgroupatclubnightas therewerelotofmembersaway.

Don’tforgetthattherewillbeaSundayJauntonEasterSunday-moreinformationisinthe Tourer.ForsomeofusGrandparentsitisthebeginningoftheschoolholidayswhichmeans babysittingduties.

Whatabusymonthit’sbeenforourbranch–thecalendar certainlyhasn’thadmuchbreathingspace!

Oneofthehighlightshastobetheawesomedayatthe GymkhanainFebruary!Itwasfantastictoseesuchagreat turnout,especiallysomanyfaceswehaven’tseeninawhilewhataboostforthebranch!Theatmospherewasbuzzing,the carswereoutinforce,andtherewasplentyoffunandlaughter allround.

Dayslikethisreallyreminduswhatourbranchisallabout-good people,greatcars,andevenbettercompany.Andthebestpart? There’splentymoretocome!

ManythankstoEstherandStewartforalltheireffortsforRuahineRambleatthebeginningof March.UnfortunatelyGlynandIwereunabletoattend,butfromallaccountsitwasavery successfuleventandeveryonehadagreattime.

Withplentymoreonthehorizon,it’sshapinguptobeafullandexcitingyearahead-sostay tunedandkeepthoseengines(andenthusiasm)running!

AtlastwehavesomeSummerwiththeweatherbeingnottoobad inrecentweeksforabitofmotoring.I’mpleasedfortheVERO Rallyentrantsthatitwasfineforthewholeevent.Ithinkthe biggestworriesatVEROweretheferrysailingchaosandthenthe fuelpricerisingtoover$3.20perlitre(notgreatifyou'refillinga bigthirsty“yanktank”everyday!)

MythankstoStewartBirdandEstherforrunningtheRuahine Rambleinmyabsence.IwassupposedtobeinChristchurchfor theExecutiveMeetingthatweekendbutsomeunexpected“fuelpump”issues(mine,notthe car)sawmegroundedfromflyingsoIwasunabletogetdownthere.CathandIdidgetto theClubRoomslaterthatafternoontojointhefewthatstayedonfortheBBQTea.

HarryhastakentheroleoforganisingtheSundayJauntssoifyouhavegotanythoughtson placesofinteresttovisit,thenpleasegetholdofhimorsendyourideasdirectlytoCathand shewillforwardontohim.HisfirsteffortwasarunuptoDennisandJudyMilne’stocheck outtheAustinRestorations.IbelieveJudyverykindlyputonsomehomebakingforeveryone whichwaswellappreciated.ThankyouJudy!

WiththeRuahineRamblebeingonly6daysafterreturningfromcompleting906miles coveringtheLockinverStationcampoutinlandfromTaupothentheHighlandFlingbasedjust southofTeAwamutuinmytrusty29Chev.Ionlyhadtimetocheckandreplenishthefluids therecertainlywasnotimeforcleaningandwiththepromiseof20ishmilesofgravelroads ontheRambletherewascertainlynodesperatepushtodoso.

Thisyear’srunstartedoutfineandclearwithabout30carsandagoodnumberofthose beingfromotherbranchesitwasgoingtobeagreatday.ThiswasStewartBirdsfirst attemptatsettingarallyrouteandhewasrathernervousattheDriversBriefingandfrommy ownexperienceIcanverymuchsympathisewithhim.

LeavingtheclubroomsweheadedthebackwaytothetopendofAshhurstviaGroveRoad thenuptoPohanginaandupFinnisRoad.I’vealwaysthoughtthiswouldmakeafantastic vintagehillclimbroadsteepandwindingandthespeedswouldn’tbebigbuttheaccident wouldbeifyougotitwrong!FromtherewewoundourwaytothegravelpartofTaonui RoadandworkedourwaytoRidgeRoad.Thiswasgreattodrivetheoppositewaytothelast numberoftimesI’vedoneit.

CoulterLinewasnextthenwemadeourwayacrossKimboltonRoadtoenduponForrest Roadwhichworksit’swasintothebackofKimbolton.ApproachingtheTjunctionin KimboltonwedecidedtopopupthestreettoHansen’scafeforcoffeeandhotchocolate beforeheadingdowntothelunchstopattheKimboltonDomain.Whileenjoyingourlunch wecouldseesomeominousdarkcloudsmakingtheirwayuptheranges.Imadethemistake ofsayingit’swon’tcometomuch-therewasnorainintheforecastfortoday!

AfterleavingthelunchstopweheadedsouthtowardsFeildingthendownHaynesLineto BeaconsfieldValleyRoadthenloopedupSH54forashorttimethenleftontoBensonRoad, thelastbitofgravelroadforthedaytoendupZigzaggingourwayontoMakinoRoadand endupcomingdownintoHalcombe.Itwasn’tlongafterthatthingsgotalittlewet!! WeturnedontoMangaoneRoadwhichisabeautifuldrivealongthetoponacleardaybut thatwasn’tthecasetoday.WedidaslightdetourintoFeildingtogethappyhouranddinner suppliesthenbackontherallyroutetoColytonitwasafterthatwemissedcountingaside roadanddeviatedfromthesetroutebutnevermindIknowwhereIwasmeanttoendup.

Witheveryonebackattheclubroomsforafternoonteaandprizegivingtheraindecidedto stop!Aftertheformalpartofthedaywasoverasmallnumberpeoplestayedbackforhappy hourandBYOdinnerwithmebeingputinchargeoftheBBQeveryone’ssuppliedvarietyof steak,pattiesandsausageswasdulycookedwithnocomplaintsfromthecustomersand prettymucheverythingbeingconsumeditwasafantasticwaytofinishtheday.

MyDadandIheadeddowntoVEROforafewdaystohavea"nosey".Itturnedouttobe oneofthehighlightsofmyshorttimeintheVCC(3years?).

WearrivedinNelsonWednesday18thofMarchintheafternoon.Thedisplayintheevening wasfantastic.Twowholecarparksinthecentreoftownwerefilledtothebrimwithgreat cars,trucks,andmotorbikes.ImetsomepeoplethatIhadn'tcaughtupwithforawhileand evensatinafewrarecars.

Thursdaywasarallythrough valleysandwindingroads.I wasluckyenoughtobea passengerinthe1916Chev ofLenHaycock.Len'sson Tonywasdriving,withother passengersbeingavisiting Germancouple.Atthelunch stop,Isomehowfoundmyself inthebackseatofBob Lederer's(USA)imposing 1911Stoddard-Dayton,which somemayhaveseenonour RuahineRambleearlierthis month.The432cid(7litre) OHV4-bangerisoddlyquieter thanexpectedwhentravelling alongtheroad.

Fridaywasanotherrallyday, thistimewithmehoppingin withmynewfriendsfrom CaliforniaBobSohlandLarry Carterinthe1928Packard 443Phaeton.Ipersuaded Bobtotryamincepiewhen westoppedatabakery.

It'sfairtosaythathedidn'tenjoyit!Isaiditcouldn'tbeworsethantinnedspam!

Saturdaysawaround500carsturnupforthedisplayattheNelsonShowgrounds.The weatherwasabitdrearyinthemorningbutitcleareduparoundlunchtime.Therewere somereallyamazingcarsthere,andtheownerswereinterestingtotalkto.Somegood friendsweremadeattherally.

Unfortunately,wehadtorushofftoPictonaround3pmaswefearedourferrymightbe cancelled,aswereothersatVERO. Allinallitwasafantasticevent.

I'mamemberoftheAucklandBranchoftheVCCandhavebeenlookingforanoriginal "4-positionandOff"switch(seethetwophotosbelow)topurchaseforthedashinmy 27Erskine-withoutsuccesssofar.

Byapproachingallotherbranchesperhapsanoriginalswitchcanbefound. Itdoesn't matterifthe switch mechanism isfaulty becausethat mightbe either repairableor replaceable withanew/ aftermarket rotary switch. Themain thingto haveisthe originalfaceplateandswitchhandle.

I'malsolookingforanoriginal"Hearshey"combinationsteeringcolumnlockandignition switchassemblywithoriginalkeyinworkingcondition(seephotobelow)topurchase. Theoneinmycarhas beendisabled-Iassume whenthekeywaslostby thepreviousowner. Ifanyonecanassist, pleaseletmeknow.
